The great census divide

The Nationalist Congress Party is not in favour of a caste-based census, but has not made it an issue as it finds Big Brother Congress suddenly more accommodating towards the Yadav triumvirate — Sharad, Mulayam and Lalu — than its partners in the UPA. At the Cabinet meeting last week, senior NCP leader and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel took the middle path, pointing out that the matter has reached such a point that the government would be criticised either way. The NCP camp is dismayed at the haste with which the Congress brought the onus on the government by promising to bring the issue in the Cabinet.

The Cabinet meeting witnessed some spirited opposition with Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports M S Gill leading from the front and terming it as a retrogressive step. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal wanted the government to take a “rationalist” approach.

The biggest surprise, however, was Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh’s support for a caste census. He said that by promising to bring the issue in the Cabinet, the government had already committed itself to the cause

Gadkari apologises for his remarks on Mulayam, Lalu

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari has apologised to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad for using abusive language against them.

Gadkari”s remarks came in the context of his criticism of the two leaders for their not backing the cut motions in the Parliament and how some people had helped the Congress.

“I was only using a proverb. I only used this with reference to the CBI. They are respectable leaders. If they are hurt by my comments, I take back my words,” Gadkari said.

He allegedly used abusive language about the two leaders at a BJP rally in Chandigarh.
He said: “Mulayam and Lalu once used to oppose the Congress and the UPA Government. They bowed before the CBI. In their inquiry, somewhere the lawyer was changed, while somewhere the affidavit was changed.”

He said the two leaders pretended to be lions, but later bowed down before the CBI.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Thursday said Gadkari had used highly derogatory language.

Party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan termed Gadkari”s remarks as shocking and outrageous, saying he should apologise to the nation for bringing politics to such a low.

UPA Government likely to survive cut motion

New Delhi, Apr 27 (ANI): The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government is likely to survive the cut motion to be introduced by the Opposition in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday with reports coming in that leaders of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will abstain from voting, as they are still to take a final decision.

The government is expected to be present in full strength in the Lok Sabha to counter the Opposition, which is set to introduce a cut motion over rising prices

There are also reports of a split between the main opposition BJP and the Lalu Prasad Yadav-led RJD.

So, while the Left along with the AIADMK, BJD and the TDP plan to move cut motions and insist on a vote, the RJD and the SP intend to interrupt the proceedings.

It is reported that the BSP convened a parliamentary board meeting this morning to decide on whether to abstain or vote against the cut motion.

The BJP is, however, all charged up, as on Monday it issued a whip to all of its MPs to ensure all its leaders support the cut motions tomorrow.

Cut motions are usually issued by members of the opposition in the legislature to devout the policy behind the financial estimates of the government.

Cut motions can be of three types: disapproval of policy cut, economic cut and token cut. (ANI)

Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in Bihar by-polls

Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats.

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad termed the results as referendum on the ruling government.

“It is not possible for the Bihar Government-led by Nitish Kumar to return. The RJD alliance will return to power. The people of Bihar have welcomed us with open arms,” said Yadav.

The RJD failed poorly in Lok Sabha election in April-May this year, winning just four seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. (ANI)

VHP hails Jaswant’s expulsion, RSS avoids comment

New Delhi, Aug.19 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)on Wednesday welcomed the expulsion of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh for eulogising Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his book, saying it would send the right signals to the BJP’s legislators and functionaries.

“We take this judgement as a positive sign. This expulsion will have positive effects on the lawmakers of the party and the party workers as well,” VHP President Giriraj Kishore told mediapersons in national capital.

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), however, said it was not concerned with the controversy.

“This is not our subject,” RSS chief Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat said when asked to comment on Singh’s ouster.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), gave a cautious reactions on the expulsion.

“Jinnah is respected the same way in Pakistan as Gandhiji is respected in India. I don’t want to comment on it. It is their party’s internal matter,” said RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Newspapers quoted Jaswant Singh’s book “Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence”, as saying that Pakistan’s founder was ‘demonised in India’.(ANI)

Election defeat does not deter Fernandes, ready for many more battles

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Former Defence Minister and Janata Dal (United) party founder George Fernandes, who has been known for his resilience throughout his political journey, says that in battles, a loss does not matter and it was the fight itself that has always been more important for him.

Fernandes, who contested in the recent parliamentary elections as an independent from Muzaffarpur, says his defeat does not deter him for from continuing to fight against, corruption, poverty and all forms of injustice to build a more transparent, compassionate and equal society, where the self if forgotten and the country comes first.

Writing in the latest issue of the ‘Other Side”, he says, “There are many battles that still remain to be fought.”

Janata Dal (U) party did not give him a ticket and says many of his old colleagues, whom he had nurtured, did not support him. George Fernandes says he received ‘tremendous love and support’ from the people of Muzaffarpur during the campaign. There were large crowds who attended the meetings.

But, as he did not have a strong party machinery “the overwhelming affection of people in village after village did not translate into votes.”

While complimenting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the creditable performance of the JD (U) in the elections, he forewarned him against ‘continuing arrogance’ towards stalwart socialist colleagues in Bihar.

“Bihar’s JD (U) gave a creditable election result. However, Nitish Kumar should be forewarned that his continuing arrogance towards stalwart socialist colleagues in Bihar and his recent back-door machinations with the Congress will result in a Congress revival in Bihar sooner rather than later. His victory was more due to the people’s desire to keep Lalu Prasad Yadav away than any great lead in development as is made out,” Fernandes stated.

Fernandes writes that his long-standing relationship with the people of Bihar, particularly with the people of Muzaffarpur and Nalanda nurtured over the past many years, would continue.

“My doors will always be open for them and for all those who are needy and seeking justice, from all over the country. I would like to believe that those currently in power in Bihar and at the centre will deal fairly and expeditiously with any problems of the people that I may raise with them as I have done for the past 50 years”, Fernandes wrote in his column in “The Other side.”

Fernandes accepts the election result with no regrets because his fights have always been for democratic values and for the causes of the poor and underprivileged.

“I don’t see it as my loss. This time it was also a fight for the right values, which should be practised by those whom I helped to attain power in Bihar. I do not believe they are wiling to improve yet. It may take some more time for them to learn that real power remains only when politics is backed with moral character, courage, and democratic functioning,” he states.

George Fernandes promises to remain active to fight corruption, poverty and all forms of injustice. “There are many battles that still remain to be fought,” he concludes. (ANI)

Farooq Abdullah not to attend cabinet’s swearing ceremony

New Delhi, May 22 (ANI): National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah will not be present at the swearing-in ceremony slated on Friday, as he is flying to South Africa to attend one of the IPL cricket matches.

Abdullah told reporters in New Delhi that his party has not demanded any berths from the Congress, and it only wants the Centre to pay more attention to Jammu and Kashmir.

“It is the prerogative of the Prime Minister and the Chairperson of the UPA. They decide who goes into the cabinet. I want to say that we have a lot of hopes from the UPA to better the state of Jammu and Kashmir and to make the country even more secular. I have booked the tickets a month back. I don’t care about politics as I need a break now,” said Abdullah.

President Pratibha Patil is scheduled to swear-in 19 members of a new cabinet-led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday after his coalition won a second consecutive five-year term in a general election.

Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told reporters in Patna that his state is now “obstacle free”, referring to RJD Chief Lalu Yadav not being slated for cabinet berths of the UPA.

“The main issue is of coal linkage. We would want that these issues get resolved soon as now there is nobody who will pave an obstacle in Bihar’s development and the Congress needs to take initiative as they are about to form the government,” said Kumar. (ANI)

Congress, DMK close to ending cabinet berth deadlock

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): The Indian National Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which is in power in Tamil Nadu, have reportedly arrived at a formula that could end the deadlock over who from the latter party will make it to the Union Cabinet.

According to sources, the Congress and the DMK have reached an understanding on two Cabinet rank ministers, one Minister of State (with Independent charge), and three Ministers of State.

However, sources say that the DMK is still jostling for a third full Cabinet rank post, which the Congress is reluctant to hand out.

The Congress negotiation team, which comprises Pranab Mukherjee, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel is likely to meet the DMK leadership at Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi in a short while from now for a third round of talks to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, given the deadlock over government formation, which has led to a cancellation of a morning meeting between President Pratibha Devising Patil and the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Congress think tank is reportedly seriously considering the re-inclusion of former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav in the Cabinet in move designed to send out a firm message to UPA allies not to overstep their bargaining positions.

Lalu, whose Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party did not fare well in this year’s general elections, has offered unconditional outside support to the Congress-led UPA.

Earlier in an interview to the Aaj Tak television channel, Lalu said that no one should write him off politically despite the electoral results. Saying that this was not the first time that he had bitten the political dust, he warned that he would come back politically stronger, and therefore, his rivals should not underestimate him.

When asked whether relations with the Congress and more specifically the Gandhi family had deteriorated, Lalu said that ties with the family and the party were just fine, and added that in politics, ups and downs take place.

He also expressed confidence about becoming the country’s Prime Minister one-day. (ANI)

New government begins taking shape

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Political activity in the national capital has picked up with various parties jostling and lobbying for their representatives’ inclusion in the new cabinet.

With the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) convening a meeting of its victorious parliamentarians in Parliament House, the major contenders bidding for inclusion are Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav, who has been a steady supporter of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which defied political odds and emerged victorious in the general elections.

The Congress, which has achieved a decisive popular mandate, is debating over whether it needs to include Samajwadi Party supreme Mulayam Singh Yadav in the cabinet, as his party, which is ready to offer outside support, played a crucial role in extending support to the UPA during the debate over the US-India nuclear cooperation deal.

There is speculation by certain elements within the Congress, who feel that the Samajwadi Party wavered during the elections, and that it would be a better option to rely on leaders of smaller parties like Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Omar Abdullah of the National Conference.

The Bahujan Samaj Party, which is led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, has said today that it is ready to extend outside support to the UPA Government.

The Congress will also have to be mindful of the fact that it does not enjoy majority status in the Rajya Sabha and that the inclusion of some of these groups in the government would help the Congress to push its program through the Upper House.

Within the Congress, there is a possibility that younger elements like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot may be accommodated in the Cabinet.

Insofar as the profile of the cabinet is concerned, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will have to take crucial decisions like who he would like as his Railway and HRD Ministers and whether to include or not to include Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in the cabinet. There is also speculation that former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Dr. Singh’s close confidant, Dr. Montek Singh Alhuwalia, will be made the Finance Minister.

As far as the profile of the Prime Minister’s Office is concerned, the expectation is that National Security Adviser M.K.Narayanan will continue in the same assignment as he has been able to maintain an even keel during the management of several crises, and has a background as Director of the Intelligence Bureau and head of the Joint Intelligence Group.

Former PIO and now media adviser to the PM, Deepak Sandhu, is also expected to be retained. The new government will also be on the lookout for a new Home Secretary, as the present incumbent, Madhukar Gupta is to superannuate after receiving an extension. A new Foreign Secretary is expected to be in place by July with the superannuation of present incumbent Shiv Shankar Menon.

Among other expected to get fresh assignments are former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, who played a notable role in finalizing the US-India civil nuclear cooperation deal. (ANI)

Lalu says will offer unconditional support to UPA government

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad today said he would lend unconditional support to the UPA Government.

After attending a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Lalu said he is ready to offer unconditional support to the government.

“And, we said this in the meeting as well,” he added.

When asked about his role in the Cabinet, Lalu said: “Nothing of this sort has been decided yet.”

Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Lalu had earlier admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.

The RJD won just four seats this time compared to 22 in 2004. (ANI)

Modi contends Congress gained in polls at cost of its allies

Ahmedabad, May 18 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi opined on Monday that the Congress Party capitalised on the follies of its allies in the recently concluded elections.

Modi said the ouster of the Congress-led UPA allies like Lalu and the Left Front by the people in the elections resulted in Congress winning the seats particularly in the constituencies where these allies also had contested.

“The Congress got the benefit because UPA partners were continuously creating hurdles and blackmailing in the Congress-dominated areas. Allies such as Lalu or Left have been taught a lesson by public. The Congress got its natural benefit. So, the Congress has got its seats at the cost of UPA partners,” he said.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed by BJP suffered a setback in the elections.

Nonetheless, hailing the public verdict, Modi said that his party would accept it politely and assume the role of opposition with responsibility.

“Public decision is last in democracy and everybody has to accept it politely. The BJP and the NDA, we were in opposition, this time as well. They have given us responsibility to work as opposition. The Congress and the UPA were ruling so once again party has asked them to form government. So, as far as ruling and opposition parties are concerned, there is no difference in the situation,” he added.

The BJP despite its win in some states, conceded defeat at the national level with the Congress-led UPA coalition winning overwhelmingly. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee ready to support, work with UPA

Kolkata, May 17 (ANI): Refusing to indulge in political bargaining, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said that she is ready to support the new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre.

“The Trinamool Congress will support and work with the Congress-led government at the Centre. We are not in favour of political bargaining. Even when I became the railway minister during the NDA regime, I did not care for it. I hate bargaining,” Banerjee said at a press conference here.

Banerjee further said that she was happy that the Congress would not have to take the support of the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM).

Banerjee, whose party won 19 Lok Sabha seats, said she wanted stability, development, people’s security, a solution to unemployment and electricity crisis.

When asked that RJD chief Lalu Prasad was also seeking the Railway ministry, Banerjee said it was of no consequence to her.

“Let the government work for five years,” she added. (ANI)

PM wants Montek Singh Ahluwalia as Finance Minister?

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): As the Congress core committee brainstorms over the issues related to government formation, there are reports that Dr. Manmohan Singh wants deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia as the next Union Finance Minister.

Ahluwalia will have to enter the cabinet through the Rajya Sabha route, the same as the Dr. Singh, CNN-IBN reports.

With party leaders insisting that the UPA does not need the support of any new big allies, the Congress is also likely to keep key portfolios with it.

There is also a demand from within the party to bring Rahul Gandhi into the Cabinet especially after his successful campaigning strategies, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the sources, Rahul is likely to be included as the Rural Development Minister in the Cabinet.

Sources revealed that the new Cabinet would include several young MPs.

The other young MPs apart from Rahul who are likely to be inducted into the Cabinet include Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasada, and Sandeep Dikshit.

The major UPA allies such as the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK), the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also are expecting ministerial berths.

Reports claimed that the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has already called up Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad to attend the Cabinet meeting.

There are speculations doing rounds that the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be shifted to the Finance Ministry, which the Manmohan Singh has been handling so far.

Commerce Minister Kamal Nath is likely to be shifted to the External Affairs Ministry.

Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony are likely to continue in their posts. Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal may get the Commerce Ministry. (ANI)

People voted for development in Bihar : Nitish Kumar

Patna, May 16 (ANI): Congratulating the people of the state for the Janata Dal (United) led NDA’s sweeping win in the general elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said people voted for development and peace.

Addressing a press conference here, Kumar said the people wanted the development of the state and that is what they voted the NDA back to power.

He said the thumping success of the NDA in the state was in continuation of the 2005 Assembly elections.

“The verdict is continuity of what people of the state voted for in 2005, while giving us the majority in assembly elections,” Kumar said.

Criticising RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, Kumar said the people had rejected the ‘negative politics’ of the two.

Kumar added that the verdict would certainly help the state in achieving what has been lost in the past, and it would witness a surge in developmental activities.

“I want the trend to go ahead,” Kumar said.

He constantly tried to evade questions regarding his future course of action and whether his party would support the UPA in forming the government at the Center, but reiterated that Bihar must be given a ‘Special Status’. (ANI)

Sivaganga, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has lost the elections in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga parliamentary constituency to his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) rival Raja Kannappan.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Prada has won the Rampur seat, while Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda beat his nearest rival Nafe Singh Rathi of INLD by over four lakh votes in the Rohtak constituency. (ANI)

As per latest reports, the UPA is leading in 214 seats and the NDA in 135 seats. The Third Front is leading in 57 and Others are leading in 28.

The Congress-led UPA is leading in Kerala and Rajasthan while the NDA is ahead in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh. The Congress is also leading in BSP-stronghold of Uttar Pradesh.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is ahead in Amethi, Sachin Pilot in Ajmer, P Chidambaram in Sivaganga and Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram were also ahead.

BJP candidate Jaswant Singh is leading in Darjeeling.

From Congress, Janardhan Poojari and Margaret Alva are straggling in Karnataka. Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath is trailing in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh while former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda is leading in Hassan in Karnataka.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad is leading in Pataliputra, but trailing in Siwan in Bihar.

Among the Congress candidates who are leading in early trends are Priya Dutt (Mumbai North), Jyotiraditya Scindia (Guna), Pranab Mukherjee (Jangipur) and Sandeep Dikshit (East Delhi).

UPA, NDA working overtime to cobble up required majority

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The suspense continues to mount in political circles on which combine-the UPA or the NDA-will be in a position to form the next government at the Centre.

Key political leaders are travessing the length and breadth of the country meeting each other to determine and convince who will join which coalition or front.

Counting of votes will take place on Saturday, and most political leaders are saying that they will confabulate and reveal their respective positions after the results emerge.

“We are receiving positive indications from various parties. We will not reveal what we are discussing or what we have discussed till the results are out. Once the results are out, the BJP Parliamentary Party will meet and take stock and then decide the way forward,” said BJP president Rajnath Singh.

“Everything is fluid,” said NCP leader Praful Patel.

Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony, Ahmad Patel and Digvijay Singh were huddled in talks till late last night.

Given his good equation with CPI-M veterans Jyoti Basu and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mukherjee may be given the task of opening up the lines of communication with Left parties.

A meeting between BJP president Rajnath Singh and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh at a wedding reception last night set the political circles abuzz. The SP leader, however, dismissed media speculation of a political understanding being reached.

“People are aware that it is only Congress which can provide a stable government. All our allies are happy with us,” said Jayanthi Natarajan of Congress.

However, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar expressed confidence that his party will emerge as the single largest with more 30 seats that the Congress. “NDA will emerge as the single largest coalition with 50 seats more than UPA,” he claimed.

“All options are open. Everything will depend on the numbers,” said Amar Singh. The SP leader said he was in touch with CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury and would be speaking to NCP leader Sharad Pawar.

The Fourth Front, comprising Lalu Yadav’s RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP and SP have said the combine was averse to having any alliance with the BJP as also Mayawati’s BSP.

“Everybody is talking to everyone,” Patel went on to add.

JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav adopted a cautious approach. “There are some people with whom we are talking with some belief. The talks have been ongoing since yesterday night,” he said without elaborating.

“Congress does not use and throw its allies. We had a difference of opinion with RJD, LJP and the SP over the number of seats allotted to our party but they continued to be ministers and continue to be part of the UPA,” explained Natarajan.

“We shall prevent formation of a BJP-led government. This does not mean that automatically there would be a blanket support to a government led by the Congress,” CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta contended. (ANI)

Mulayam Singh wishes to be part of Central Government

Bijnor/ Chandigarh, May 11 (ANI): Ahead of the final phase of Lok Sabha elections, campaigning is in full swing across the nation with all parties trying all means and modes to woo the voters.

Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh urged people in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district to vote for his party so that it can emerge as the third largest party in the Lok Sabha elections.

“If no party gets a clear majority, the Samajwadi party should be the biggest supporter for making the government. The Samajwadi party this time wants to be a part of the government,” he said, while addressing a rally in support of SP candidate from Nagina-Bijnor, Yashvir Singh.

Also in Bijnor, Bollywood actor Imran Hashmi sought support for the Congress party candidate, who is contesting from here.

Meanwhile, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav addressed an election rally in Chandigarh to gather support for the RJD candidate, Anwar Ul Haq.

The fourth phase of polling ended on May 7, the fifth and the final phase of polling will take place on May 13. The outcome of the five-stage election will be known on May 16. (ANI)

BJP, Lalu trade verbal volleys over Nitish’s loyalty

New Delhi/Patna, May 11 (ANI): Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Yadav and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Ravi Shankar Prasad traded verbal volleys on Monday over the loyalty factor of Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar.

While Lalu lashed out at Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi for praising Nitish Kumar, who he said has joined hands again with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Prasad said it was a clear indication of Railway Minister’s desperation to safe his political career.

Lalu hit out at Kumar’s U-turn on Modi by sharing the same platform at the NDA rally in Ludhiana on Sunday.

He said, “Nitish sacrificed his secular image by joining a murderer like Modi.”

The BJP, however, said that Kumar is very much a part of the NDA and that Lalu is not only attacking Nitish Kumar but Congress as well.

“This is very surprising. Lalu was not supposed to speak before the 16th. How has he spoken today? It is a sign of desperation. Nitish is a part of the NDA right from day one. Narendra Modi is a duly elected thrice Chief Minister of Gujarat and is doing good work. Lalu Prasad is getting a washout, hence all this desperation,” Prasad told a television channel during a political debate.

“He is not only attacking Nitish Kumar, he is attacking the Congress as well. In the last 20 years, Lalu is finding himself in a mess for the first time when he has no legs to stand,” he added.

Earlier, Lalu said, “I always said Nitish has ‘teeth in his stomach’ (a complicated person). Now, people like Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who had given him the secular certificate, and others who favourably spoke of him will realise how secular he is.”

“Nitish had refused to attend an earlier NDA rally in New Delhi, saying he was not prepared to share stage with Modi, but once the elections in Bihar were over, he (Nitish) returned to his original self,” Lalu said. (ANI)

Congress removes Moily from Media Chairman post

New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): Congress party removed its Media Chairman Veerappa Moily from the post, a day after he made strong remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar – emerging as Indian politics’ most-wanted.

Moily has been replaced by AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi, who had been holding the charge earlier.

According to party sources, Moily has been dropped from the post because “the party High Command is unhappy with his stand on some critical issues”, it’s clear the trigger was his speaking out of party’s line on Nitish Kumar.

On Friday, Moily said the Congress would not make a hero of Nitish Kumar who had rebuffed the party’s overtures to reach out to him.

He also accused the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of “insulting” the Congress over seat-sharing in Bihar.

“We should be more angry. We never wronged them. It’s only Paswan and Laluji for reasons best known to them, they left us only two seats,” Moily had said.

Lalu and Paswan, key members of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, seem annoyed over AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s praise of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

“What is the reality? Nitish Kumar is with the BJP. And if anybody wants to talk with Nitish, then first he has to leave the BJP. I don’t think that he will leave BJP,” Moily said. (ANI)
