Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole ‘refusing to sign new £1mn X Factor contract’

London, May 20 (ANI): Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole is said to have refused to sign her new 1million pounds X Factor contract until she knows who will replace co-judge Dannii Minogue.

Cole, 26, also wants a promise that her pregnant pal Minogue will not be permanently replaced.

Minogue, 38, will miss out on the auditions stage when it starts next month, and producers plan to have guest judges to fill in for her alongside 50-year-old Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh, 57.

“It’s getting very close to the start of The X Factor auditions and Cheryl has not yet signed on the dotted line,” the Daily Star quoted a show source as saying.

“It would ruin her X Factor experience not to have another ‘girly girl’ like Dannii to laugh and joke with and gang up with against the lads.

“There’s been talk about Mel B whom Cheryl is quite frightened of.

“She is also mindful of the fact any youngsters may try to upstage her in the fashion stakes,” the source added.

All the judges are set for a showdown meeting at Cowell’s London mansion next week, and Minogue, who is back in Australia and due to give birth in July, will join them via a conference call.

The new series of The X Factor is scheduled for August. (ANI)

Man U players warned not to join anti-Glazer protest

London, May 8 (ANI): Keeping in mind plans of rebel Manchester United supporters to flood the Old Trafford stadium with the champions’ old colours to protest against the Glazer family’s ownership, players have been ordered not to pick up any such scarves hurled on the pitch after Sunday’s Premier League game.

Pressure group Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) announced on Friday that they would be handing out free “Glazers Out” kits containing a flag, whistle and card emblazoned with the word “GO”.

They blame the American family for saddling the club with huge debts and want fans to hold up the cards when TV cameras focus on them or if United score against Stoke City.

United players have been warned that they must not give the “Glazers Out” campaign publicity by donning anything green and gold, like ex-star David Beckham did when he returned with AC Milan earlier this year.

“The word has come down from on high that the lads should only pick up red and white scarves, hats and flags. The Beckham incident was quite embarrassing for the club and the last thing they want is for Wayne Rooney or Ryan Giggs to be seen in green and gold,” The Sun quoted a United source, as saying.

In an email to supporters, MUST said: “Win, lose or draw, let’s call time on the Glazers. The manager, the players, the supporters – we’re all part of one big Manchester United family. The Glazers are not part of our family. We need to make that clear!”

Club chief executive David Gill said last week he would rather see the stadium full of red and white scarves instead of green and gold. (ANI)

Football World Cup gives Brit men ‘excuse’ to set up a ‘den’

London, May 4 (ANI): Thousands of male football fans in Britain will spend 460 pounds each on creating luxury ‘dens’ ahead of this summer”s World Cup in South Africa, according to new research.

According to the survey, nearly a third of British males already have their own area fitted with home entertainment gadgets or equipment for hobbies such as a dart board or pool table.

Research for Halifax found that 4 percent of men without a ‘den’ have plans to set up one for the upcoming football tournament.

“The impending World Cup finals have given men the excuse they need to create luxury lads-only areas in their homes. This new generation of male-only dens provide a comfortable space for men to enjoy the football or construct that train set they”ve always wanted,” the Independent quoted Martyn Foulds, from the bank, as saying.

The research suggested that the average spend on either creating a den or upgrading the existing area would be 462 pounds.

According to the research, some 69 percent of men”s dens have a PC or Mac, while 46 percent have a stereo and a third are decorated with collectibles or memorabilia.

More than one in 10 had a beer fridge 13 percent, while 9 percent had a musical instrument and 6 percent a dart board, says the poll of 1,000 men by ICM Research online. (ANI)

Strauss says skipping Bangladesh tour’s benefits will be seen during Ashes series

London, Mar 27(ANI): England skipper Andrew Strauss has said that he was right to take a break from captaincy of the national team and rest himself for the tour to Bangladesh, but insisted that he will never do it again.

Strauss was accused of “disrespecting Test cricket” by Australian legend Shane Warne for resting instead of touring Bangladesh.

“I can understand the criticism – their argument the captain should be there all the time is a valid one. But I think we must look at ways of making sure our players are performing at their best when we need them most,” The Sun quoted Strauss, as saying.

“The benefit of taking some time off now will only be seen in the summer and into next winter. We have some very important cricket coming up. Come The Ashes, we”re going to need as much energy and enthusiasm as we can muster. I still think missing Bangladesh was the right decision,” he added.

Strauss, who will return to lead the side against Bangladesh in May and Pakistan in July, said that it was not a unilateral decision.

“Myself, head coach Andy Flower and England managing director Hugh Morris spoke about it for a number of months. This break was an opportunity we saw in the schedule. I don’t think I’ll need another one,” he added.

In his absence, Alastair Cook led England to whitewash victories in both the one-day and Test series and Strauss said: “It was fantastic to see some guys in Bangladesh who hadn”t been involved in the Test team have a go.”

“Cookie did things his way and did an excellent job, but I think the lads understand the principles we”re putting in place,” he added. (ANI)

Kelly Brook excited over ‘natural’ new lingerie pics

London, March 27 (ANI): Kelly Brook is happy to unveil her new lingerie range without the digital tweaking.

The English model said she had no qualms to letting her natural pictures get published, insisting she was not absolutely perfect

“I’ve been quite heavily retouched in the past. Lads’ mags were always blowing up my boobs. I didn’t mind if someone wanted to make my boobs look bigger and legs longer. But now it’s unrealistic,” The Mirror quoted her as saying.

“I want to look like myself. I’m not that skinny, or a 10ft Brazilian, and I think women want something more real,” she added.

The star further revealed to Style Magazine that she was initially uncertain to let the snaps be printed: “I was like, ‘Let me have a look at them.’ So I took another look and thought, you know what, I am 30, and not perfect. There are so many unrealistic portrayals of women it would be cool to show what I look like in the raw.” (ANI)

Wayne Bridge dating Kim Kardashian?

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Soccer star Wayne Bridge has got a new date, and she is none other than former Playboy centrefold Kim Kardashian.

Bridge, 29, bumped into the busty telly babe in a Miami club”s VIP area after fleeing the furore over ex-love Vanessa Perroncel”s fling with his former team-mate John Terry.

And since then, the pair has been exchanging texts and is planning to meet when Kim flies to London next week.

“They met while Wayne was cheering himself up on a lads” night out and got on like a house on fire,” the Sun quoted a pal of the Manchester City ace as saying.

“They exchanged texts, have been in touch ever since and will be hooking up when Kim comes to the UK.

“It”s early days but she”s certainly put a smile back on Wayne”s face as she”s great fun and absolutely gorgeous. He”s looking forward to catching up when she”s in town,” said the friend.

The pair was introduced at Miami”s trendy Nikki Beach Club where Bridge was out partying with fellow city stars Shaun Wright-Phiillips and Micah Richards this month. (ANI)

Watching new lads perform in Bangladesh is Harmison’s way of beating the blues

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): Fast bowler Steve Harmison who was left out of the England squad to South Africa and Bangladesh insists that seeing England”s new batch of bowlers in Bangladesh performing well is lessening his pain.

“I still think I have something to offer but watching guys like Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn coming through is really exciting,” The Sun quoted Harmison, as saying.

“England look like they”re going in a different direction now but all I can do is keep taking wickets for Durham and hope that is enough for me to get another go,” he added.

The 31-year-old player was axed from the team despite helping win The Ashes last August.

On the final day of the 5th Test of Ashes, Harmison claimed the three penultimate wickets, including those of Peter Siddle and Stuart Clark with consecutive deliveries.

England won by 197 runs to take the series 2–1. (ANI)

Ferguson backs experienced players to grab record title for United

London, Mar 16(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reckons his experienced players will carry the club to a record 19th title.

With just eight games left in the Premier League, Ferguson is banking on the know-how of his multi-medal winners including Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand.

“Experience will certainly be crucial. The lads who have been there and done it before will help us,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“Their know-how will be very important for us as the season gets really interesting. There”s a big programme of games coming up and we”ll be making changes when we need to,” he added.

Victory in the league this season will not only mean United go ahead of Liverpool and stand alone with 19 titles, but they will also become the first English club to win four titles in a row.

“It would be a fantastic achievement. The opportunity is there for us and we are all aware of that,” Ferguson said.

“I have set us a title target: Win every game between now and the end of the season! Obviously it”s a big ask, but that”s what we must aim for,” he added. (ANI)

Ashley Cole ”vows to win back Cheryl”

London, March 5 (ANI): Ashley Cole is hoping to patch up things with wife Cheryl – by offering to renew their wedding vows, it has emerged.

He has told pals that he will win back the singer in showdown talks next week.

Ashley is confident that he”ll make things work during a 15-minute face-to-face next week.

“Ashley and a lot of his friends reckon Cheryl will come back,” the Sun quoted a close pal as saying.

“JT always knew he was going to get Toni back, he even told the lads in the dressing room.

“Ashley is clinging to the hope that he can do the same,” the pal added.

Cheryl, 26, will see him in France after promoting single Parachute in Denmark. (ANI)

George Harrison’s widow in razor fence row

London, September 5 (ANI): Late Beatle George Harrison’s widow Olivia has been caught up in a planning row after a former television sitcom star alleged that a razor wire fence around her house almost killed his cat.

Rodney Bewes, who starred as Bob Ferris in Seventies television show ‘The Likely Lads’, said the fence posed pets with a dangerous threat and even made the neighbourhood looking like a “war zone”.

Olivia filed a planning application with South Oxfordshire District Council to replace the fence with an identical version, a move opposed by Bewes.

“My cat, Maurice, has been injured on that fence several times, once severing an artery that nearly killed him. It has cost me thousands in vets’ bills,” the Telegraph quoted Bewes as saying.

“There are several other cats – people’s pets – that have been practically gored on that fence, it’s that dangerous.

“It makes me sad when I come home to such a beautiful place and see this thing that makes it look like a war zone. If everybody had razor wire around their gardens can you imagine what it would look like?

“It doesn’t make it any more secure. The bottom half is wood and with a good crowbar you could get through it no problem,” Bewes added.

The Harrisons came up with the boundary in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, after a crazed intruder broke in and stabbed the late guitarist in 1999. (ANI)

Becks ‘makes his kids watch BBC to retain Brit heritage’!

London, Sep 2 (ANI): Brit footballer David Beckham is said to be so keen to make his kids retain their British roots that he has resorted to making them watch the BBC at home in Los Angeles.

Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz prefer to watch American cartoon networks, but their dad told pal Gordon Ramsay that he makes them watch BBC to keep them connected to their country of birth.

“After the LA Galaxy match Gordon, Victoria and David went for drinks on Sunset Boulevard,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“They were in high spirits and David used the occasion to tell Gordon that he makes his lads watch BBC America at home.

“However, Ramsay’s Channel 4 shows Kitchen Nightmares and The F-Word are often aired on BBC America, which means he has to swiftly switch over to avoid the fruity language.

“David was explaining that he wants his kids to appreciate their British heritage and its language and thinks watching BBC America will keep them connected to their country of birth,” the source added. (ANI)

Cowgirl Jordan taunted by ‘Team Andre’ Manchester hecklers

London, September 1 (ANI): Jordan a.k.a Katie Price was reportedly at the receiving end of taunts from a group of hecklers as she turned up for a night out in Manchester.

The former glamour girl, who has been making headlines after her nasty split with estranged husband Peter Andre this year, was spotted wearing a cowgirl costume at the city’s Living Room nightclub.

The mum-of-three was purportedly faced with a group of hecklers who started jeering, whistling and chanting “Team Andre! Team Andre!” at her, reports the Mirror.

The 31-year-old was said to have reacted simply, telling the drunken lads to watch her TV show instead of Pete’s, before taking off with a bare chested cowboy for a Native American themed fancy-dress do.

A source said: “Kate was out with pals and determined to let her hair down. She’d had a stressful 24 hours meeting her boyfriend’s parents for the first time and wanted to unwind.

“But when some drunk lads started giving her grief, she found it genuinely upsetting. Kate hates that the public are siding with Peter in the split.” (ANI)

Sidebottom to use ODIs to get back to Tests

London, Sep.1 (ANI): Ryan Sidebottom who has not played in any of the Tests this summer, says that he will use the one-day format to become a successful five-day player once more this winter.

Sidebottom, however, must prove his form and fitness in England’s 13 limited-overs matches in the next month, reports the Telegraph.

He bowled well in the Twenty20 showdown against Australia at Old Trafford on Sunday before the rain arrived.

Sidebottom’s four overs at the start and end of the innings cost just 31 runs.

Another decent performance in the second T20 game in Manchester tonight would do his cause no harm.

He said: “It’s been frustrating watching England win and other bowlers performing well. That was tough. You don’t want guys to be injured or not do well but, from a selfish point of view, it’s been gutting. For 18 months to two years, I had a great time for England. But since then it’s been very frustrating.”

“I kept in touch with the lads during the summer – I have great mates around the dressing room. I’m happy for them but, from a jealousy point of view, I would have loved to be involved in The Ashes. I wasn’t and I’ve just got to get on with it,” he added.

“With Freddie retiring and Harmy thinking about it, that might help me. But these one-dayers and the Champions Trophy in South Africa at the end of September are vital for me,” Sidebottom – who has 77 wickets in 21 Tests, said. (ANI)

Flintoff wants 6,000 pounds Ashes urn mosaics in his swimming pools

London, Aug 30 (ANI): England all rounder Andrew Flintoff is stumping up 6,000 pounds to have two giant mosaics of the Ashes urn built into the bottom of his swimming pools.

The England all-rounder is including two pools in the basement of the 4 million pounds mansion he’s having built.

He was so bowled over by his Ashes triumphs against the Aussies that he hired craftsmen to create 6ft tile mosaics of the coveted old trophy to go on the pool bottoms.

Freddie, 31, planned the 3,000 pound-a-piece works before England clinched their latest Ashes triumph at The Oval.

But after last week’s victory he had the years 2005 and 2009 added to recall both series wins, News of the World reported.

“Freddie wanted the urn mosaics because that 2005 Ashes win was so special to him. Then when he and the lads took the Ashes again he decided to have the dates added as well,” a pal of the Lancashire star revealed.

“Every time he takes a dip he’ll be able to savour the glory once more. And if he ever puts the house on the market it’ll be a unique selling point – unless the buyer’s an Aussie!”

Freddie, who has just retired from Test cricket, is over-seeing construction of the house in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire.

He bought the former home of Man City boss Mark Hughes for 1.85 million pounds, had it demolished and is spending two million pounds on a six-bedroom home for himself, wife Rachael and their three children. (ANI)

Lily Allen cheers for England at Ashes

London, Aug 21 (ANI): English pop singer Lily Allen was spotted cheering for England at the Ashes decider on August 20, with a St George’s Cross painted on her cheek.

Allen, 24, was seen with decorating firm boss boyfriend Sam Cooper watching Freddie Flintoff, Andrew Strauss and the lads battling Australia at The Oval in South London, reports the Sun.

The ‘LDN’ singer even posted messages on her Twitter website during the Test, stating it was a “perfect way to spend a rare day off”.

But she slammed Paul Collingwood – caught for 24 – as “dull”, and even hinted she wants to go into cricket commentating. (ANI)

Britney’s foul-mouthed sons ‘swear in public’

Washington, August 13 (ANI): Britney Spears’ sons left onlookers gasping after repeated swearing in public recently.

The pop princess was said to have taken three-year-old Sean Preston and two-year-old Jayden James to a ‘swag suite’ where invited guests can pick a variety of goods for free.

The lads were heard repeatedly screaming “oh s**t!” during their visit to the suite for the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

“We were all surprised by their potty mouths, but it was actually pretty funny,” Contactmusic quoted an onlooker as telling the New York Daily News newspaper.

Speaking of Britney, the onlooker added: “She was too busy picking out freebies to chastise the boys for misbehaving.”

The singer has previously mentioned about her kids using offensive language, saying they learnt it from their father, her former husband Kevin Federline.

At the time, she said: “The boys are staring to learn words like ‘stupid,’ and Preston says the F-word now sometimes.

“He doesn’t get it from us. He must get it from his daddy. I say it, but not around my kids.” (ANI)

Bizarre ‘lying-down game’ the latest craze among Facebook users

Melbourne, July 10 (ANI): A bizarre “lying-down game” has become the latest fad among Facebook users.

Several groups have been set up by Facebook users in honour of the game, which has led to thousands of photographs of people lying face down in progressively odder locations, including rooftops, postboxes, luggage racks, and even in the engine of a jumbo jet.

Many pictures show people lying in the middle of roads, in front of tanks, across bars in pubs, and on table football games.

Participants are told there are two aims to the challenge: that the lying down should be as public as possible, and that as many people as possible should be involved.

Those participating in the game have to lie with their palms flat against their sides with the tips of their toes touching the ground.

Doormen Scott Wood and Wayne Pyle, of Newcastle, set up a Facebook page after a trip to Majorca.

“I started doing it when I was on a lads’ holiday in Magaluf. I thought that lying on the floor would be a funnier way to pose for my holiday snaps than the usual poses,” News.com.au quoted Wood as saying.

“We want people to find the most random places they possibly can the weirder the better. There’s so much misery around these days, with the recession and everything this is an excuse to have a joke and do something silly,” the 34-year-old added.

According to lying-down fan Danielle Mitchell, 23, this game has become a hit among her own circle of friends.

‘We are always looking for weird places to lie down. I think everyone should have a go at the lying-down game, it’s very liberating,” she said. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole steps out in see-through dress to celebrate 26th birthday

London, Jul 3 (ANI): Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole reportedly stepped out in a head-turning, see-through dress as she celebrated her 26th birthday.

A crowd of partygoers outside private members’ club Vanilla in London were shocked to see Cole in the revealing Alexander McQueen dress.

“Cheryl’s dress was a real head-turner. It was the talking point on the night,” the Daily Star quoted a partygoer as saying.

“Most of the girls weren’t sure – but the lads certainly liked it.

“Cheryl is a beautiful girl and by wearing that dress she proved she has her own individual style,” the partygoer added. (ANI)

Oz man born without arms and legs still enjoys life to the hilt

London, Jul 2 (ANI): When Oz man Nick Vujicic was born without arms or legs, his own parents could not bare to look at him or even hold him.

His own father left the hospital room to vomit, and his distraught mother didn’t hold him until he was four months old.

“My mother was a nurse and she did everything right during pregnancy but she still blamed herself,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

But for the 26-year-old, who tried to commit suicide by drowning himself in the bath at age 10, giving up on life was not something he wanted and has embraced it fully with the help of his family and friends.

Vujicic, from Melbourne, enjoys everything other lads his age do – playing football, swimming, and surfing, and while doctors know the condition is caused by a rare occurrence called Phocomelia, not much else is known about why it happened to him.

But from an early age, Nick was determined to make his life better.

“It was so hard for them but right from the start they did their best to make me independent,” he recalled.

“My dad put me in the water at 18 months and gave the courage to learn how to swim.

“I also got really into football and skateboarding. I totally love the English Premier League,” he said.

Although the majority of his body is torso, he has a small foot at the bottom of one hip, which helps him in everyday life.

Determined Nick uses it to type, hold a pen to write and pick things up between his toes.

His father was a computer programmer who taught him how to type with his toe aged just six. ujicic started feeling encouraged about life at the age of 13, after he read a newspaper article about a disabled man.

“I was 13 and read a newspaper article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and help others,” he said.

The footie fan is now a motivational speaker, and has travelled to over 24 countries speaking to roups of up to 110,000 people.

“I realised why God had made us like this – to give hope to others. It was so inspirational to me that I decided to use my life to encourage other people and give them the courage that the article had given me,” he said.

“I decided to be thankful for what I do have, not get angry about what I don’t. “I looked at myself in the mirror and said: ‘You know what the world is right that I have no arms or legs, but they’ll never take away the beauty of my eyes’.

“I wanted to concentrate on something good that I had,” he added. (ANI)
