PM arrives in Egypt for XVth NAM Summit

Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt), July 15 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Egypt late on Tuesday night to attend the two-day XVth Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

Issues like global economic downturn, terrorism, climate change and food security are expected to be on top of the agenda at the Summit.

Other summit themes are international solidarity for peace and development and current economic and financial crisis. It would also focus in comprehensive manner on global regional and sub-regional issues, besides issues relating to development, human rights and social issues.

Dr. Singh will address the plenary session of the NAM Summit, and has already underlined India’s commitment to help revitalise the NAM, which had a renewed role to play in the emerging world order following the end of the Cold War.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Dr. Singh will meet his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday morning. He will also have other bilateral meetings.

A NAM First Ladies’ Summit would also take place at the initiative of Egypt in which the Prime Minister’s wife, Gurusharan Kaur, would participate. The theme of this meeting would be Women in Crisis Management – Perspectives and Challenges, Best Practices and Lessons Learned.

Egypt’s First Lady Suzane Mubarak would anchor the meeting that would focus on the role of women in the context of the global economic and food, health and humanitarian crises. Heads of UN Agencies: the FAO, the WFP, the WHO, and the ITU are expected to make brief statements during the two separate sessions of the First Ladies’ Summit.

The NAM is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

The movement is largely the brainchild of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Gamal Abdul Nasser, former president of Egypt and Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito. It was founded in April 1955 and as of 2007, it has 118 members.

The purpose of the organization as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979 is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics.”

They represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations’s members and comprise 55 percent of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the third world. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Washington, June 26 (ANI): Barack Obama’s kids Malia and Sasha got a loud shout out from their role model and R and B star Beyonce Knowles at her concert in Washington, D.C.

Fat people live longer!

Sydney, June 19 (ANI): Finally some good news for people on the heavier side: those ugly-looking love handles and a double chin extra can help you live longer.

That’s the conclusion of a new study by the Japanese Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry, which found that people who are overweight at the age of 40 live longer on average than people with other physiques.

The research, which reached the conclusion after studying the health of about 50,000 people aged 40 or older over a 12-year period, showed that thin people had the shortest life expectancy, on average dying six or seven years earlier than overweight people, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

While studying the volunteers, scientists looked at the past physiques of the participants and how long they lived past the age of 40, and grouped them according to their body mass index (BMI), an indicator of how fat a person is.

Men of regular weight (with a BMI of between 18.5 and 25) at age 40 lived for an average of 39.94 more years, while those who were overweight (BMI of between 25 and 30) at age 40 lived a further 41.64 years, the study found.

Ladies of regular weight lived on average a further 47.97 years, compared with overweight women, who lived another 48.05 years.

Obese men and women (BMI of 30 or more) lived a further 39.41 and 46.02 years, respectively. But thin men (BMI of less than 18.5) were on average expected to live 34.54 more years, and thin women another 41.79 years.

As far as the reason for the surprising finding is concerned, it could be that many thin people smoke and a theory that thin people are more susceptible to contagious diseases.

However, the link between physique and life expectancy is not clearly understood.

“People won’t extend their lives by straining to put weight on,” said Shinichi Kuriyama, an associate professor at Tohoku University who led the research.

The study also found that the fatter a person is, the greater their medical expenses. (ANI)

Beyonce can’t help dancing to her own song

London, May 30 (ANI): Every time Beyonce listens to her latest number Single Ladies (Put a Ring a It), she can’t stop herself from dancing, revealed the diva recently.

“I can’t stop seeing the choreography (in the video) when I hear it. My foot just starts doing the steps,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

She added: “It’s so embarrassing. I don’t want people to think I’m dancing to my own song, but I can’t help it.” (ANI)

Paula Abdul dismisses painkiller addiction

New York, May 8 (ANI): Singer Paula Abdul has said that she was not addicted to painkillers for 12 years, has never been drunk and never checked into a rehab.

The comments come days after the American Idol judge revealed in an interview with Ladies Home Journal that she’d battled a 12-year addiction to painkillers.

The magazine said that Abdul, to overcome her habit, checked into the La Costa Resort and Spa in California last Thanksgiving to wean herself off painkillers, reports The New York Daily News.

Now, however, she claims that the magazine got it wrong and took her remarks out of context.

Abdul, 46, told two radio shows Thursday morning that she never said she had been addicted to painkillers or checked into rehab.

“It was very stressful for me to hear that and to be quoted saying something. I never said,” Abdul told hosts on the Detroit radio show “Mojo in the Morning.”

“I’ve never checked into a rehab clinic. I’ve never been addicted or abused drugs, and I’ve never abused alcohol. I’ve never even been drunk in my life,” she said.

When hosts of the Dallas-based radio show “Kidd Kraddick in the Morning” asked her if it had been difficult to talk about her struggle with addiction, she replied, “I didn’t. I was quoted as saying something I didn’t say.”

In her defence, the stunner said the facility where she was reported to have retreated to detox is a vacation spot, not a clinic. (ANI)

Now, a book on Michelle Obama’s fashion choices

New York, May 5 (ANI): Michelle Obama is certainly one of the biggest fashion icons of recent times, and now a new book describing her fabulous fashion choices is set for release in the US tomorrow.

The book, Titled ‘Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion’, is authored by former fashion magazine editor-in-chief Mandi Norwood and chronicles Mrs Obama’s signature looks.

It will talk about the First Lady’s varied fashion sense, right from the belted purple sheath dress she wore on the night her husband got the nomination.

And the tome will also detail the148 dollars White House Black Market black-and-white print dress she bought off the rack.

“It’s her journey to the White House through the filter of her style,” The New York Daily News quoted Norwood as saying.

Recalling the yellow J.Crew ensemble the First Lady wore on Jay Leno, which she purchased online for under 340 dollars, Norwood said: “Each outfit has a story around it.”

She added: “Suddenly we had this vision of the next First Lady sitting in bed, next to Barack, shopping online.”

And one of the biggest reasons behind her growing appeal is that her fashion sense reveals her to be one of us.

Norwood said: “In the past, First Ladies have always been slightly aloof. You’ve never really been able to emulate their style, even if you wanted to.”

However, with Michelle Obama’s love of pencil skirts, button down cardigans, simple sheath dresses and her liberal use of a thick black belt, her style is approachable.

In fact, when she wears off-rack-pieces from J.Crew or H and M, one can easily get the exact looks.

“I think she will reignite what America is known for in fashion and that is classic American sportswear. Bright separates, really comfortable clothes, clothes you don’t have to be a millionaire to look good in,” said Norwood. (ANI)

No frenzied speculation over Gursharan Kaur’s outfits

London, Apr 2 (ANI): In the G-20 media room here, there are several journalists filing reams of copy on US First Lady Michelle Obama’s outfits as compared to the outfits worn by Sarah Brown, the wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

They have of course been robbed of a great fashion competition-Carla Bruni (French President Nicholas Sarkozy’s spouse) Vs Michelle Obama.

It just didn’t happen with Bruni snubbing the Brits by choosing not to come to London. Would she have stolen Obama’s thunder? Definitely say fashion followers. Her chic style would definitely have overshadowed the elegant, but at times too off-the-rack-style of Michelle.

This is one story, however, that Indian reporters are spared from following, for Gursharan Kaur, the wife Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, never disappoints, as she is fairly predictable. She isn’t as predictable as her husband though…the good doctor never changes the colour of his blue turban.
Ms. Gursharan Kaur only wears sarees for formal occasions. They are either Kanjeevaram silks or printed silks. Sleeved blouses in usually the same colour accompany the the saree she is wearing. Accessories…nothing remarkable. A string of pearls at the most, small earrings, one or two bangles and that’s it.
Even at the dinner hosted by Sarah Brown last night, Gursharan Kaur wore a nondescript printed silk saree, her hair tied up into a neat bun. Seated at her table was “Bend It Like Beckam” director Gurinder Chaddha.

Top model Naomi Campbell, who was in the Indian capital recently to attend the Fashion Week, was also invited for the dinner billed pejoratively as the “Fluffies’ Dinner”. However, she wasn’t seated at Ms Kaur’s table. Michelle wore a black and white outfit and Sarah Brown a black dress.

At an earlier engagement at the Royal Opera House, Ms Kaur wore a cream coloured crepe silk saree. But the colour for the evening, it seems, was blue. Sarah Brown wore an ill-fitting blue dress which hugged her in all the wrong places….the paunch clearly visible. Michelle wore purple, the colour of the season we were told. But then she paired that with a gaudy cardigan. Why? Accessories…. Michelle wore her pearls for a third day in a row. Not nice. Sarah Brown wore a thin gold chain. OK will do.

The G-20 First Ladies club did not disappoint in the style department, but these are hard times and the safest image to portray is of being a recessionista. By Smita Prakash(ANI)

Russian golfer whose sex appeal matches her playing skills

London, Apr.2 (ANI): Meet the Russian golfer whose sex appeal matches her playing skills.

Maria Verchenova has made a huge impression on the Ladies European Tour circuit, but there is much more to her than her skills on the fairway.

When asked which was easier, modelling or golf, The Sun quoted Verchenova as saying: “re you kidding me? Definitely modelling. You just put some clothes on and pose. If golf was that easy we’d all be 20-under-par every tournament.”

When asked whether she was bothered by the media attention because of what she was wearing, she said: “I enjoyed it. I always like to bring something extra special to the golf course, so if I’m wearing sexier, more stylish stuff like a shorter skirt or a nice tennis-style dress and people notice then great.”

When asked how she would like to be known – as a sexy woman or a great golfer, she said: “I’ll settle for both, thank you.” (ANI)

Jaipur gears up for Gangaur festival

Jaipur, Mar 24 (ANI): In anticipation of the much awaited annual Gangaur festival, shops in Jaipur have starting stocking the idols of Hindu God Shiva and her consort Gauri.

Gangaur festival is one of the most important festivals in Rajasthan and is observed throughout the state with great fervour and devotion by womenfolk who worship the idols of Gauri for the welfare of their life partners.

Describing the significance of the festival, Shalu, a local said, “Idol of Isar ji represents Hindu god Shiva while that of Gangaur ji represents goddess Parvati. We offer prayers to these idols on this day. Unmarried girls pray for getting a good groom while the married ladies pray for the long life of their husbands.”

The ladies decorate their hands and feet by drawing designs with ‘mehandi’.

Due to the increasing demands of the devotees, more than fifty varieties of Isar- Gangaur idols made out of clay, wood and other materials are available in the market.

Naveen Jain, a local shopkeeper said there is a lot of demand for these idols.

“There is a lot of demand for the idols of Isar and Gangaur ahead of this festival. There are a lot of varieties of these idols available in the market today. When a procession is taken out, one can see the idols of Isar and Gangaur as tall as six feet,” said Jain.

The prices of these idols range between Rs. 50 to Rs 14,800.

Ladies set up the idol of Isar-Gangaur in their homes sixteen days before the Gangaur festival, which falls in March, the first month in the traditional Hindu calendar, and worship them continuously for sixteen days. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)

Champions thrive in small towns

Melbourne, Mar 5 (ANI): When it comes to producing elite female athletes, small towns excel in nurturing the best talent compared to big cities, says a new research.

In the Australian-Canadian study, involving American-born female athletes playing in the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Women’s United Soccer Association, researchers looked at their place of birth.

They found about 57 pct of all adolescents were born in cities with a population less than 500,000.

Almost 85pct of professional female golfers and about 80pct of professional female soccer players were born in these less-dense communities.

The figures revealed while 26pct of females were born in cities of less than 50,000 population, 38pct were professional female golfers and 40pct of were professional female soccer players.

Study co-author Professor Bruce Abernethy, of the Institute of Human Performance at the University of Hong Kong revealed that place of birth is unlikely to be key in developing sports expertise, rather it is “a proxy for describing different types of developmental environments, experiences and opportunities”.

“It is much easier to be the best 13-year-old hockey player if you are living in a town with a population in the thousands, then it is in Sydney or New York,” ABC Online quoted Abernethy as saying.

“If you have early success it changes your self-concept – you believe you have talent,” he added.

This is because the talented regional athlete is picked in all the representative teams, and also gets more attention from coaches.

Moreover, their success encourages them to practice more, which boosts their skills.

In contrast, according to Abernethy, an equally talented child living in the city will be in the middle ranks of their sport so will not get the same attention or develop the same self-concept.

“Smaller communities provide an environment that allows children a greater amount of independent mobility and physical safety,” Abernethy said.

“When coupled with an abundance of space to play, these factors may facilitate diverse types of sport participation, a characteristic associated with the acquisition of sport expertise,” he added.

Abernethy said that young athletes in country areas, because of less safety concerns, are not dependent on parents’ supervision to practice. This allows them take “deliberate play”, which is unstructured play that develops innovative skills they later use in their sports. (ANI)

Marge Simpson caught enjoying ‘Homer-sexual’ lip-lock

London, Mar 3 (ANI): Marge Simpson, who’s known for her conservative style and nagging her husband Homer in the popular animation The Simpsons, has become the latest TV character to enjoy a lesbian affair.

In a recent episode of the hit series, the blue-haired wife was kissing an attractive female friend on the lips. The action took place in the Simpson’s living room, in Springfield, as her husband Homer looked on.

But for those wondering if Marge’s sexual inclining might have taken a 180-degree turn, you’ll be disappointed – the entire scenario was a fantasy constructed in Homer’s mind, reports The Telegraph.

In 2005, Marge’s older sister Patty came out of the closet, and got engaged to a female golf player called Veronica.

It later turned out, Veronica was, in fact, a man who was dressed in drag so he could compete on the Ladies Professional Golfing Association tour and was promptly dumped by Patty when she found out. (ANI)

New Delhi, February 16 (ANI): Beyonce Knowles prefers hitting the bed rather than frolicking around after having a few drinks.

The R and B queen has revealed that she barely yields to alcohol and is a dull drunk who keeps to herself, reports the China Daily.

She said: “Well, I don’t drink often. But when I’m drunk, I’m very quiet and I observe and I go to sleep. I don’t think I’m much fun.”

High sex hormone levels ‘make women unfaithful’

London, Jan 14 (ANI): Ladies who have extra-marital affairs can blame it on their hormones, claims a new study, which found that women with high levels of estrogen not only look and feel pretty – but are also more prone to hop from man to man.

strogen, the so-called female hormone, affects fertility and makes women dress more provocatively.

Dr. Kristina Durante of The University of Texas at Austin and colleagues found that young women felt more attractive when they had high levels of an estrogen known as estradiol, and they acted on those feelings, reports New Scientist.

“These women are willing to trade up when the opportunity arises and continue to extract these lucrative resources from men when they can,” says Kristina Durante, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Texas in Austin, who led the study.

She thinks the behaviour could be an adaptation to the high costs of giving birth.

“For women it’s all about the resources that we need. If you’re going to be getting knocked up there’s a significant cost,” she says.

To reach the conclusion, Durante’s team tested 52 female undergraduates aged 17 to 30 who were not taking hormone contraceptives. They took two estradiol samples from each, as hormone levels fluctuate from week to week.

They had the women rate their own attractiveness and showed their photographs to others to rate, as well.

As independent confirmation, a panel of two men and seven women also judged them the prettiest.

High oestradiol women reported that they had dated more men and were more willing to cheat, from innocent flirts to serious affairs. These women, however, proved no more interested in one-night stands than women with lower levels of oestradiol.

The study has been published in the journal Biology Letters. (ANI)
