Larry King’s wife attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription drugs

London, June 11 (ANI): Talk show host Larry King’s wife has been revealed to have attempted suicide late last month by overdosing on prescription drugs as she battled depression.

According to TMZ.com, an officer with the Provo, Utah police reported entering Shawn King’s residence on May 2, going to a bedroom where paramedics were treating her and seeing “multiple pill bottles, all of which were empty on the bed”.

The police report noted “scriptures, a purse, other various books” and a letter which appeared to be a note left by the victim.

“It is unknown whose writing this letter was in, however wording on the letter led me to believe that (King) had intentionally taken the quantity of pills,” the Telegraph quoted the officer as writing in the report, which is labelled “attempted suicide”.

The report said labels on the bottles indicated multiple drugs including Ambien, Klonopin and Clonazepam, and many of them were empty.

One witness told police that Shawn King “is always depressed, but she had not mentioned anything that she would want to hurt herself or take her own life”. (ANI)

Youth ends at 35 and old age begins at 58

London, Mar 17 (ANI): An average Briton believes that youth ends at 35 and old age begins at 58. In between – all 23 years – is middle age.

These are the findings of a new survey.

To reach the conclusions, academics from the University of Kent studied data from 40,000 people across Europe. They presented the findings to a meeting of the Economic and Social Research Council, in London, reports The Telegraph.

Professor Dominic Abrams said: “The survey showed that age prejudice – being treated as “too young” or “too old” – is perceived to be a serious or very serious issue by 63 per cent of respondents, so it is obviously important to know what these age labels mean to people.”

Professor Abrams, a psychologist, added: “This evidence shows that what counts as young and old is very largely down to the age of the beholder.” (ANI)

Beatles ‘shark’ Allen Klein passes away aged 77

London, July 5 (ANI): Music mogul Allen Klein, whose career highlights included celebrated clients such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, passed away aged 77 in New York after suffering from Alzheimer’s.

The record label executive was said to have earned an infamous reputation as a ruthless operator, digging out money-spinning deals from labels for his clients during his career spanning five decades.

Klein was also held responsible by many for making contributions to the demise of The Beatles after his failure to acquire control of copyrights on their behalf, reports the BBC.

He once told Playboy magazine: “Don’t talk to me about ethics. Every man makes his own. It’s like a war.”

Klein said he had been roped in by John Lennon in 1969 since the Beatle wanted “a real shark – someone to keep the other sharks away” and protect the interests of the band.

By the time he extracted a lucrative recording deal for The Beatles, the four had already gone off the talking terms, with the group splitting in 1970.

Klein funeral is set to take place in New York on July 7. (ANI)

Managing computer energy consumption can save 80 dollars a year

Managing computer energy consumption can save 80 dollars a year Mainz, Germany – Taking basic steps to save energy can also save up to 60 euros (80 dollars) a year, according to a German consumer agency.

Computer users should set their system to energy saving mode, advises the Consumer Central of Rhineland Palatinate in Mainz, Germany. Doing so forces the computer to automatically switch into energy savings mode whenever possible, cutting power consumption down to 4, instead of 80, watts.

Doing without a screen saver is another good idea. They use energy and are unnecessary with modern monitors. Another good idea is to not set the monitor to be any brighter than necessary, since that also keeps down energy consumption.

Notebook users can save energy by unplugging the power from the wall whenever the battery is full or the notebook isn’t in use. The same applies to modems or routers.

The consumer central also recommends buying power strips with on/off switches for use with computers.

When shopping for a new computer, customers should keep an eye out for models that are the most energy efficient. Computers with labels like Blue Angel or Energy Star are certified to be more energy efficient. And anyone who wants a computer for a home office can save energy by skipping a high-power processor or a graphics card. (dpa)

Pictorial warning to be displayed on cigarette tobacco products from May 31

New Delhi, May 6 (ANI): The Centre would implement the rules on issuing statutory pictorial warning on cigarette and tobacco products from May 31.

Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, who appeared for the Union Government gave the undertaking before a bench of Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi on Wednesday.

Earlier, the apex court had sought a response from the Centre on the allegations of an NGO that the government under pressure from the “tobacco lobby” was dragging its feet on issuing statutory pictorial warning on cigarette and tobacco products.

The petitioner contended that thousands of people in the country are succumbing to cancer mostly due to the widespread use of cigarettes and tobacco products.

In its application, the NGO complained that though the government originally brought in the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules in 2006 to making it mandatory for all tobacco products to display statutory pictorial warnings, “it was not implemented so far under pressure from the tobacco lobby”.

Under the 2006 rules, the government had initially planned to display “skull and bones” besides a dead body on the packages and labels to caution people on the adverse effects of smoking and using tobacco products. (ANI)

No remarriage for Pink, Carey Hart

Washington, Apr 28 (ANI): Pink has dismissed reports claiming that she is to remarry Carey Hart.

The singing sensation said that she would like to model her relationship with Hart on unwed couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

Though the couple has reconciled since its separation last year, Pink has no plans to remarry contrary to reports suggesting that the duo was organizing a low-key sunset ceremony at their home in Malibu, California.

“I don’t know where the remarriage thing came from. That kind of came out of the air. We are definitely back together,” Contactmusic quoted Pink, as saying.

“We never really legally got divorced. Paperwork for both of us is really annoying. So we’re choosing to be together.

“Our role models are Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon and Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn – people who just choose to be together every day because they want to be there.

“And labels have never been our thing, so, we’re just diving into that empty swimming pool, headfirst,” she added. (ANI)

US blocks Mexico on tuna, partial win on China copyrights

Geneva – The United States blocked Friday the formation of a World Trade Organization panel to look into a complaint by Mexico that the US was unfairly closing its markets to tuna from its southern neighbour.

Mexico said US labeling rules, which prevent Mexican companies from placing “dolphin safe” labels on their products, violated trade rules as the tuna was in line with regulations on protecting dolphins.

About one-third of Mexico’s fishing fleet was said to be adversely affected by the decision.

Mexico first asked for WTO consultation last October.

The US said its measures met its obligations under WTO rules.

The two countries have been at odds over tuna imports to the US for nearly two decades.

If Mexico makes a second request, which it can do as early as next month, the US would not be able to block the formation of a panel to hear the issue.

Meanwhile, in another dispute, the US won a partial victory against China, when a panel upheld part of its complaint regarding copyright rules.

The panel found that China was too lax regarding enforcing intellectual property rights, particularly in regards to counterfeit movies and music. However, the panel did not accept the US position that the thresholds for criminal prosecution were too high, meaning copyright violators were able to act without fear.

Also, the WTO also established a panel to look into a complaint by Thailand against the US regarding anti-dumping measures on polythylene bags. The US, as per an agreement, did not block the move. (dpa)

Gifts passed on from generations hold symbolic value

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): Gifts passed on from one generation of family members to the next are worth more than their monetary value, because such presents carry the symbolic value attributed to them by the family’s traditions, lore, and heritage, says a new study.

Author Tonya Williams Bradford (University of Notre Dame) said that it’s not just stuff or money when it comes from a special relative or has a meaningful story behind it.

She added that assets that have “symbolic value serve to nurture family ties from the past into the future.”

Bradford found that gifts from family members have great symbolic value and are treated with care, so much so, that certain funds are separated out as “special money” because it has significance within the family.

She demonstrated that even gifts of assets, which can easily be appraised and sold, often become symbolic when passed from one generation to another, and that they are frequently treated differently than equivalent assets that were not received from a parent or grandparent.

“Labels are not only ascribed to gifted assets, but are transferred from past to future generations through family caretakers who nurture both the symbolic meaning and market values of the gifted assets,” wrote the author.

She also learned that certain assets are often considered surrogate family members and even discovered that families sustain their heritage by imposing hierarchies on assets.

“These findings expand our understanding of and create new opportunities to examine how individuals employ a special form of possessions-inalienable wealth as assets-including how individuals choose to part with assets, a choice necessary for the well-being of all economies,” she concluded.

The study is published in the Journal of Consumer Research. (ANI)
