“Inspired By Iceland” Unites Nation Through Online Tourism Campaign

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND, Jun 04 (MARKET WIRE) —
At around 1400 GMT yesterday, the residents of Iceland, Trade Council of
Iceland, Tourist Board of Iceland and various other travel companies,
such as Icelandair, logged on for an hour in support of the new “Inspired
By Iceland” online campaign.

During the online event, which was backed by the Icelandic Government,
Icelanders sent out messages to friends across the globe about what they
love about their country, why people should choose Iceland for a
vacation, what is really happening in Iceland and how they can also be
“Inspired By Iceland.”

“Inspired By Iceland” is intended to help boost Iceland tourism in time
for the summer months since the disruptions caused by the
Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Visitor numbers to Iceland have dropped
remarkably, due to the misinformed image that travelers have of the
current situation in Iceland. The event today was to help make people
aware that the safety, the infrastructure and the beauty of the country
is still intact.

“We believe Iceland is a country that can inspire everyone who comes
here. The stunning geography and wonderful scenery, the warmth and
kindness of the people, the unique culture and accessibility of Iceland
all go towards making our country a great place to visit — we want the
world to know that,” commented Katrin Juliusdottir, Minister of Industry
of Iceland.

Yoko Ono, a long time fan of Iceland, also helped to urge people to back
the “Inspired By Iceland” campaign via her Twitter and blog, as well as
numerous other musicians and entertainers from Iceland and across the
world.

For your own chance to be “Inspired By Iceland” and to join in further
discussions about Iceland, whether it is about the music, landscape,
sport or even wildlife in Iceland, simply go to www.inspiredbyiceland.com

Jolie a ”self-centered psycho”, claims ex-bodyguard

Melbourne, Apr 1 (ANI): Angelina Jolie is a self-centered psycho, according to her former bodyguard.

According to In Touch magazine, Bill, who once worked as a bodyguard for the actress, said she has two faces, reports The Daily Telegraph.

“Angelina has a public and a private persona,” and didn”t hold back on his true feelings.

“In my opinion, the real Angelina is self-centered and a control freak,” said Bill. “She has no patience at all. She doesn”t do things out of the kindness of her heart. And she’s totally psycho.”

Continuing with shocking revelations, he said that Jolie’s partner Brad Pitt was totally laid back, while Angie: “She screams and yells a lot, then walks away.”

He said her staff would often have to take care of the children because she would “disappear into her suite for hours. “She would punish them with silence,” said Bill, adding, “I think she could be abusive at times in a mental way.”

“She is not moved by tears,” he added. Bill also claims Angelina had “quirky habit” of “giggling when one of her kids would start crying.” (ANI)

Just be nice to others to make the world full of kind people

London, September 20 (ANI): Spreading altruism through social networks can make people across the world kind to one another, says an expert.

Nicholas Christakis, of Harvard Medical School in Boston, has observed in a study that one’s kindness can turn a friend kind to someone else he/she knows.

To demonstrate this, Christakis designed a cooperation game in which 120 students were organised into groups of four, and asked to give money to their group.

The game lasted five rounds, and after each round the students were reorganised so that no two appeared in the same group twice.

At the end of each found, the participants were told how much the others in their group had given.

Christakis observed that if someone gave a dollar more than the predicted group average, the others in that group gave approximately 20 cents more than expected in the next round.

The altruism persisted into the third round, said the researcher.

A separate study conducted by Christakis’s team showed that cooperative behaviour spreads to three degrees of separation, from friend to friend to friend, reports New Scientist.

Based on their observations, Christakis and colleagues came to the conclusion that a person who is popular and well connected could have a special role to play, as his/her compassionate acts could resonate further through the network, and he/she was also more likely to benefit from other people’s kindness. Girls will be girls, boys will be boys

Washington, Apr 29 (ANI): Whoever said ‘Men are from Mars and women from Venus’ should give a pat on his or her back, for scientists have found that sex-typed characteristics develop differently in girls and boys.

The new longitudinal study of children’s personality traits and interests, by researchers at The Pennsylvania State University, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Purdue University, looked at first- and second-born siblings from nearly 200 mostly White, middle-class American families.

Researchers collected information through home interviews conducted over seven years, activity diaries provided by the children, and saliva samples that measured the children’s testosterone levels.

Quite expected, they found that girls and boys differed in their sex-typed personality qualities and their sex-typed activity interests in early adolescence.

While girls showed higher levels of expressive traits (such as kindness and sensitivity) and interest in “feminine” activities (such as the arts and reading), boys displayed higher levels of instrumental traits (such as independence and adventurousness) and interest in “masculine” activities (such as sports and math).

But, the girls’ stereotypically feminine, expressive traits didn’t change over time.

On the other hand, boys’ sensitivity and warmth lessened substantially across middle childhood but increased in later adolescence so that by about age 19, boys reported about the same levels of sensitivity and warmth as girls.

For stereotypically masculine traits such as independence and adventurousness, girls showed increases only in middle childhood, but in boys, these traits rose across adolescence.

Such a pattern meant that by the end of high school, boys had many more of these characteristics than girls.

The study also found that changes in girls’ and boys’ personality traits and interests were related to how they spent their time.

Generally, girls who spent time with other females developed female personality characteristics, and boys who pursued activities with other males developed male characteristics.

However, the time spent with female peers was the exception-boys and girls who spent time with friends, who were girls, increased in independence and adventurousness.

The research also found that interests and traits developed differently in first-born children than in children born second, and second-born children showed increases in traits like adventurousness and independence across adolescence, unlike in firstborns.

Finally, it was found that children who showed faster rates of increase in the hormone testosterone in early adolescence weren’t as affected by social influences on their personality development.

The study appears in the latest issue of the journal Child Development. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus honoured by PETA for kindness towards chicken

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus has been honoured by the youth division of animal rights group PETA for her kindness towards chickens.

Cyrus, 16, has adopted one of the birds that featured in her new film ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’, and even ensured that the rest of her poultry co-stars find good homes.

Her actions have earned her a Compassionate Citizen Award from PETA.

“She packed up a few of the birds and sent them home with her mother. Cyrus reportedly felt sorry for the chickens because they were sad to be working,” Contactmusic quoted a PETA spokeswoman as saying.

“This isn’t the first time that Cyrus has stepped in to help animals. Last year, she and her dad, Billy Ray, found a lost dog in her neighbourhood and stayed with the dog until he was reunited with his guardian,” she added.

And even PETA boss Dan Shannon has been left impressed with her compassionate actions.

“Miley’s heart is as big as her smile. We hope that her act of compassion will inspire her fans to be kind to animals too,” he added.

Cyrus will receive a framed certificate and a card signed by PETA staffers. (ANI)

Medical researchers face conflicts of interest

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Dr. Bruce Psaty of University of Washington in Seattle knows how easy it can be to fall under the spell of a friendly relationship with drug companies.

As an assistant professor, he published an article on using beta-blockers to treat high blood pressure that caught the attention of the pharmaceutical industry.

“My family and I were invited to a first-class resort, where I presented the results at a sponsored conference,” Psaty wrote in a commentary this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

He agreed to help develop a set of slides on beta-blockers and soon found himself suggesting that the drug company’s studies be featured, in part because he felt “a kind of social duty to reciprocate both the kindness and the investment made by the sponsor in the slide set.”

Psaty said his own story illustrates the subtleties of conflicts of interest. He is dissatisfied with the current debate among doctors, spurred by reports last year by Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley that a prominent Harvard psychiatrist failed to fully disclose hefty payments from drug companies.

“The debate has not been terribly fruitful,” Psaty said in a telephone interview. He said conflicts are sometimes hard to recognize, pointing to the work of Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist at Duke University in North Carolina.

Ariely’s research suggests that most people are comfortable with just a little bit of cheating, without considering themselves dishonest. He says subtle conflicts of interest often color decision making, yet most people — especially doctors — think they are immune.

HUMAN INSTINCT

“It’s human instinct,” Ariely said in a telephone interview. “If someone does something nice — gives you $5 million in a research grant — don’t you want to do something nice back to them?”

Ariely said return favors could come in the form of excluding a sicker patient from a clinical trial, which might affect the study results. “Not on purpose, but I’m trying to help my friends, just a little bit.”

Several states including Massachusetts, Minnesota and Vermont are tightening restrictions on gifts to doctors in the hopes of preventing such conflicts.

And a bill introduced by Senators Grassley and Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl would compel doctors to disclose their financial ties with drug companies or face stiff fines.

Psaty said such laws may curb some financial conflicts, but a bigger challenge will be addressing the influence drugmakers have over company-funded research supporting the safety and effectiveness of the drugs they make.

Psaty said he accepts no funding from drug companies for his research, but short of having all clinical trials funded with public money, he suggests doctors look for red flags in studies that might indicate bias.

“Was the question a good question? Did they set the study up right? Did they use the weakest possible comparator to make a drug look good in a trial?” he said.

And when a medical journal editorial disagrees with the primary interpretation of the author, “that is a potential marker of a study where there may been some bias from conflict of interest,” he said.

Miley Cyrus, Nick Jonas together again, but only for work

New York, Apr 4 (ANI): Hollywood actress Miley Cyrus and her former beau Nick Jonas have reunited again, but only for work.

The duo will be joining other celebrities for the making of the video called ‘Pass It On’.

The track will be featuring multifarious celebrities and Cyrus and Jonas just happen to be one of them. The video is about kindness and passion.

Meanwhile, Cyrus has revealed that there is no ill feeling between her and Nick.

“We don’t hate each other,” The New York Daily News quoted Cyrus as telling Ryan Seacrest.

“We really love each other. He’s really cool, and I’m happy we’ve been able to stay friends. Everyone thinks that me and the Jonas Brothers have this big feud going on, and me and Nick are really close friends now. We talk all the time and he’s one of my best friends,” she added. (ANI)

Being nice helps finish first in business world

Washington, Mar 18 (ANI): When it comes to making big in the business world, being honest, kind and respectful gives an individual a real competitive advantage over his/her peers, according to a new study.

Researchers at North Carolina State University have shown that project managers can get much better performance from their team members by treating them with honesty, kindness, and respect.

Another study has shown that even product development teams can get significant quality and cost benefits from socializing with people who work for their suppliers.

Dr. Jon Bohlmann, who co-authored the study by North Carolina State University, looked at the cross-functional product development teams, which bring together engineers, researchers and business personnel.

The results showed that “team members showed a significant increase in commitment to the team’s success and to the project they were working on”, if they perceived their leader to be “basically being a nice guy”.

The Bohlmann study finds that “interactional fairness perception” affects “cross-functional communication”.

“If you think you are being treated well, you are going to work well with others on your team,” said Bohlmann.

The researcher said that increase in commitment was important because it could enhance performance in meeting team goals.

The second study, co-authored by NC State’s Dr. Rob Handfield, showed that playing well with others could give a company an edge when it came to product development.

It showed that significant cost and quality benefits could result from informal socializing between employees of a product-development company and those companies that supplied the product developers with material and labour.

Handfield explains that informal socializing, “like going out to dinner after a meeting”, can lead to considering new ideas that take advantage of the different perspectives and experience that suppliers can provide – and ultimately provide product developers with meaningful input.

The findings appear in the Journal of Product Innovation Management. (ANI)

Qaeda field commander in Saudi custody still a threat from prison

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Feb.19 (ANI): The Saudi Arabian Government and the country’s investigators continue to see a jailed Muhammad al-Awfi, a one-time Guantanamo Bay detainee, as a major threat to world peace, even from prison.

According to Fox News, al-Awfi was captured by Yemeni authorities and transferred to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. He was an Al Qaeda field commander in Yemen after his release from a Saudi “rehabilitation” program.

Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Awfi lived quietly in Saudi Arabia for a year after his release from Guantanamo Bay in November 2007, but he re-emerged last month in a jihadist video that showed him in Yemen, wearing a bandolier of bullets and threatening the United States.

The Saudi rehabilitation program entices prisoners with gifts and good treatment and releases them to their families’ custody when they sign pledges to abandon terror.

But according to David Draper, director of Strategic Operations at the terror watchdog NEFA Foundation, the inmates’ radical commitment cannot be overcome with kindness. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse’s Baywatch rescue act in the Caribbean

London, January 21 (ANI): Amy Winehouse has been dubbed a lifesaver by a Caribbean tourist, who claims that she was indebted to the singer for performing a Baywatch-style rescue on a beach.

Louise Williams revealed she had been taking a sailing lesson in St. Lucia when she landed on a bed of rocks after being thrown by a 6ft wave.

She further said that it was the ‘Back to Black’ singer who rushed to her aid, helped clean her cuts, and later wrapped her in fresh towels.

“A six-foot wave caught the boat and I went flying and hit a rock. Amy was on the beach 20 metres away and she ran across immediately and said, ‘Let’s have a look at you,’” the Sun quoted Louise as saying.

“She picked me up and took me across to the showers and was constantly asking, ‘Are you all right?’”
“I was bowled over by her kindness. She went out of her way to help me,” she added.(ANI)
