Scientists unravel chemistry of Titan’s hazy atmosphere

Washington, September 16 (ANI): In a new research, a team of scientists has unraveled the chemical evolution of the orange-brownish colored atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan, the only solar system body besides Venus and Earth with a solid surface and thick atmosphere.

Scientists at University of Hawai’i at Manoa carried out the research.

The UH Manoa team, including Xibin Gu and Seol Kim, conducted simulation experiments mimicking the chemical reactions in Titan’s atmosphere utilizing crossed molecular beams in which the consequence of a single collision between molecules can be followed.

The team’s experiments indicate that triacetylene can be formed by a single collision of a “radical” ethynyl molecule and a diacetylene molecule.

An ethynyl radical is produced in Titan’s atmosphere by the photodissociation of acetylene by ultraviolet light.

Photodissociation is a process in which a chemical compound is broken down by photons.

“Surprisingly, the photochemical models show inconsistent mechanisms for the production of polyynes,” said Kaiser, who is the principal investigator of this study.

The mechanism involved in the formation of triacetylene, was also confirmed by accompanying theoretical calculations by Alexander Mebel, a theoretical chemist at Florida International University.

These theoretical computations also provide the 3D distribution of electrons in atoms and thus the overall energy level of a molecule.

To apply these findings to the real atmosphere of Titan, Danie Liang and Yuk Yung, planetary scientists at Taiwan’s Academia Sinica and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), respectively, performed photochemical modeling studies of Titan’s atmosphere.

All data together suggest that triacetylene may serve as a building block to form more complex and longer polyynes and produce potential precursors for the aerosol-based layers of haze surrounding Titan.

The study demonstrated for the first time that a sensible combination of laboratory simulation experiments with theory and modeling studies can shed light on decade old unsolved problems crucial to understand the origin and chemical evolution of the solar system.

The researchers hope to unravel next the mystery of the missing ethane lakes on Titan – postulated to exist for half a century, but not detected conclusively within the framework of the Cassini-Huygens mission.

In the future, the UH Manoa team will combine the research results with terrestrial-based observations of Titan’s atmosphere. (ANI)

Pregnant Kourtney Kardashian’s mood swings terrifies her boyfriend

Washington, Sep 7 (ANI): American socialite Kourtney Kardashian has revealed that she is suffering from such terrible mood swings ever since her pregnancy that her boyfriend Scott Disick is terrified of her.

Kourtney, 30, who is expecting her first child with Disick, admits that her hormones are affecting her temperament, but she is doing her best to try not to be rude to those close to her.

“Scott keeps getting scared. But he’s been great with my mood swings so far. He’s like, ‘Just take a deep breath,’” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“He heard that with the last three months of a pregnancy you have really extreme mood swings so he was joking, ‘Oh, you’re not going to believe the mood swings!’” she said.

But it is not only her partner who has been getting the sharp end of her tongue, her family, including sisters Kim and Khloe and mother Kris, have also been suffering.

“If I’m just trying to pick a fight with someone and if I’m around Scott or my mom, then they’ll probably get it worst,” she told People magazine.

“If someone is annoying me – usually my mom – I’ll call Khloe and it’ll make me feel better because she’ll agree with me.

“I throw b***h fits. The other day, I was like, ‘This house is such a mess! Now that Scott’s living in my house, there’s stuff everywhere! We need to get it organised!’ Everything I had to do, I blamed it on Scott,” she added. (ANI)

Kim Kardashian, Reggie Bush back together?

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): Kim Kardashian and ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush have reunited, claim American reports.

The couple had broken up in July this year after rumours of both cheating were doing the rounds.

However, it is believed the pair came to an understanding after meeting up in New Orleans – where Bush plays for The New Orleans Saints – earlier this month.

It is reported Kardashian and Bush went out for dinner in the city, where Kardashian also gifted a pup to the footballer.

Contactmusic quoted a source as telling the National Enquirer: “Reggie initiated the reconciliation – he’s been trying to get back with Kim since the second week of the breakup. And when he asked to see her while she was in New Orleans, Kim seized the moment.”

The insider also said Kardashian was now staying with Bush in New Orleans.

“They say they love each other and want to give it another try,” the source added. (ANI)

Doctors confident they can save footie star Davenport’s leg

London, Aug.26 (ANI): Doctors have said they are “confident” of saving stabbed footballer Calum Davenport’s leg.

The West Ham player is making a good recovery and was moved from intensive care to a general ward.

It was feared the 26-year-old Premier League defender may lose his left leg after being stabbed several times on Saturday.

A main artery was severed in the attack, allegedly carried out by his pregnant sister’s boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst.

Calum’s family, who are keeping a bedside vigil at Bedford Hospital, were said to be “over the moon”.

Calum’s mum Kim, 50, who was also injured in the attack, has been discharged from the same hospital.

Whitehurst, 25, from Derby, is charged with grievous bodily harm. (ANI)

Clinton meets Obama, discusses release of two American journalists

Washington, Aug.19 (ANI): Former U.S. President Bill Clinton went to the White House on Tuesday and briefed incumbent Barack Obama and his top aides about his recent trip to North Korea, which resulted in the release of two American women journalists-Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

According to the New York Times, the 40-minute session took place in the White House Situation Room. Before the meeting, Clinton spoke to the president by phone and briefed his national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones.

The paper said that the meeting was rich in symbolism. The president invited Clinton to the Oval Office to talk further.

The White House said little about what the men discussed, beyond noting that Obama had wanted to thank Clinton for winning the release of Ling and Lee.

The paper also revealed that Clinton’s visit to North Korea would not have materialized had not been for the role played by veteran North Korean hand and intelligence officer, Joseph R. DeTrani.

DeTrani is the government’s senior officer responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence on North Korea. His efforts to pave the way for Clinton’s visit offer a glimpse into how the administration was forced to use unorthodox methods to overcome the lack of formal communications between Washington and Pyongyang.

The visit was arranged under a veil of secrecy with the help of De Trani, who has spent much of his career trying to unlock the mysteries of North Korea.

His role in the whole episode allowed Clinton to land in Pyongyang on August 4 to win the release of two imprisoned American journalists.

Clinton was determined not to extend a public-relations coup to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who feted him over a long dinner that night, even proposing to stay up afterward.Kim was flanked by two longtime aides – a surprise to Americans who had suspected that both men had been pushed aside – and he gave no hint that North Korea was in the throes of a succession struggle, despite the widespread questions over how long he might live.

Kim expressed a desire for better relations with the United States. De Traini and John Podesta, a trusted adviser to him and Obama, assisted Clinton.

The details about Mr. Clinton’s visit came from interviews with multiple government officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Before taking the job of North Korea mission manager in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2006, DeTrani served in the State Department as the special envoy to the six-party talks with North Korea, holding the rank of ambassador.

In that job, he got to know key North Korean officials, including Kim Kye-gwan, the chief nuclear negotiator, who greeted Clinton. DeTrani also worked with David Straub, a former head of the State Department’s Korea desk, who was a member of Clinton’s delegation.

More than anything else, Clinton’s visit served to clear up some of the shadows surrounding Kim Jong-il’s health.

The former American president did not engage in a substantive discussion about North Korea’s nuclear program. Nor did the North Korean leader give Clinton any indication that his nation would relinquish its nuclear ambitions – a condition the United States has set for resuming negotiations, officials said. North Korea’s Kim Jong Il ‘has pancreatic cancer’

Seoul (S. Korea), July 13 (ANI): North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Il, is suffering from cancer of the pancreas and is in danger of dying of the disease, South Korean television reported this morning.

Yonhap Television News attributed the latest health bulletin on the North Korean leader to unidentified Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources, and said it is consistent with a report in a Japanese newspaper over the weekend that Kim has a “serious pancreatic disorder”.

Last week, it was reported that Kim appeared haggard, emaciated and slow on his feet.

Kim disappeared from public view for three months last year after what intelligence agencies assume was a stroke last August. Since then, judging from television footage of him, his health has declined.

His youngest son Kim Jong Un was named as Kim Jong Il’s successor, but China is said to have grave reservations about this.

There are no obvious signs are that Kim Jong Il is in anything less than complete control, but close examination of recent internal developments leads many Pyongyang-watchers to the conclusion that he is leaning towards military hardliners, and away from the more reform-oriented advisers whom he favoured in the middle of the present decade. Jackson’s death reopens old wounds for Heath Ledger’s family

Melbourne, July 6 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s death has opened some old wounds for Heath Ledger’s family, especially his father Kim.

Ledger died from an overdose of prescription drugs while battling insomnia and the flu and Jackson died of a suspected cardiac arrest, believed to have been caused by a cocktail of prescription drugs.

Kim insists that Jackson’s drug-related death has hit too close to home.

He said the similarities between Heath and Jackson’s death had left his family reeling.

“On the day Michael died I spoke to my daughters and former wife Sally and we all had such a down day,” Herald Sun quoted Kim as telling Woman’s Day.

“At the end of the day, we’re all responsible for what goes into us and I blame Heath for not being responsible,” he added. (ANI)

Chiles important reservoirs of genetic diversity

Washington, June 21 (ANI): A new research has provided insights into the domestication of chiles and determined that they are important reservoirs of genetic diversity that are quite significant for conserving biodiversity.

Capsicum annuum is one of five domesticated species of chiles and is notable as one of the primary components, along with maize, of the diet of Mesoamerican peoples.

However, little has been known regarding the original location of domestication of C. annuum, the number of times it was domesticated, and the genetic diversity present in wild relatives.

To answer these questions, Dr. Seung-Chul Kim and his team examined DNA sequence variation and patterns at three nuclear loci in a broad selection of semiwild and domesticated individuals.

Dr. Kim and his team found a large amount of diversity in individuals from the Yucatan Peninsula, making this a center of diversity for chiles and possibly a location of C. annuum domestication.

Previously, the eastern part of central Mexico had been considered to be the primary center of domestication of C. annuum.

On the basis of patterns in the sequence data, Dr. Kim and his team hypothesize that chiles were independently domesticated several times from geographically distant wild progenitors by different prehistoric cultures in Mexico, in contrast to maize and beans which appear to have been domesticated only once.

Geographical separation among cultivated populations was reflected in DNA sequence variation.

This separation suggests that seed exchange among farmers from distant locations is not significantly influencing genetic diversity, in contrast to maize and beans seeds, which are traded by farmers across long distances.

Less genetic diversification was seen in wild populations of C. annuum from distant locales, perhaps as a result of long-distance seed dispersal by birds and mammals.

Across the three loci studied, Dr. Kim and colleagues found an average reduction in diversity of 10 percent in domesticated individuals compared with the semiwild individuals.

Domesticated chiles in traditional agricultural habits, however, harbor unique gene pools and serve as important reservoirs of genetic diversity important for conserving biodiversity. (ANI)

North Korea seeking hi tech medical equipments for seriously ill Kim Jong-Il

London, June 20 (ANI): The health of ‘Dear Leader’ Kim Jong-Il is rapidly deteriorating, and North Korea is trying to buy high-tech medical equipment from abroad to address the issue, according to latest reports.

South Korea’s largest selling newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo, reports that North is seeking to bring in an emergency helicopter and other expensive medical equipment through China. uoting a North Korean official in Beijing, the paper reports that Kim’s health is worsening and that the 67-year-old is being treated in a Pyongyang hospital.

Kim, 67, is believed to have suffered a stroke last year that removed him from the public eye during several key national events, The Times reported.

The medical machinery needed is among a number of items banned under the trade embargo on North Korea, which followed the regime’s first nuclear test in 2006. Previous speculation over Kim’s illness focused on possible visits to Pyongyang by specialists from Europe.

Japanese newspapers have carried stories suggesting that two of Kim’s sons have travelled to Beijing to meet President Hu Jintao and declare themselves heirs to the regime. A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing dismissed the claims. (ANI)

Scientists create soft and tough fibres that closely resemble biological tissue

Washington, May 16 (ANI): A group of Australian and Korean researchers have successfully used a robust network of DNA strands and carbon nanotubes to create supersoft sponge-like material whose mechanical properties closely resemble those of biological soft tissues.

Lead researchers Geoffrey M. Spinks and Seon Jeong Kim consider their team’s work to be a significant advance because it takes scientists a step closer to synthetically making implant materials that will closely emulate their natural counterparts-such as tendons, muscles, arteries, and skin or other organs.

Because many biological tissues are regularly subjected to intense mechanical loads, it is also important that the implant material have comparable elasticity in order to avoid inflammation. At the same time, the material must be very strong and resilient, or it may give out.

The researchers say that the materials they have made are as elastic as the softest natural tissues, while simultaneously derive great strength from the robust DNA links used for their creation.

They further reveal that an additional advantage is the electrical conductivity of the new material, which can thus also be used in electrodes for mechanical actuators, energy storage, and sensors.

A research paper describing this work has been published in the journal Angewandte Chemie. (ANI)

Kim Jong-il ‘anoints’ youngest son as successor

Seoul – North Korea’s communist leader Kim Jong-il has promoted his youngest son to a key post, in a possible sign of grooming him as a successor, South Korean media reports said Sunday. The secretive family dynasty has ruled the nuclear-armed north of the peninsula since 1948, with increasing speculation at the health of the 67-year old Kim Jong-il, who is believed to have suffered a stroke.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing “informed” sources, the youngest of Kim’s known three sons, Kim Jong- un, has been appointed to a junior position on the National Defence Commission – the most powerful decision-making organ in the Stalinist country.

Kim Jong-un is believed to be either 25 or 26 years old. The elder two sons, Kim Jong-nam, 37, Kim Jong-chol, thought to be 27, have also been named as possible successors at various times.

However little reliable information leaks out from the reclusive regime in Pyongyang. Previous reports that Jong-un would be a candidate for election to the Supreme People’s Assembly in March this year proved to be incorrect.

The three sons publicly acknowledged come from two different mothers, neither of whom is married to Kim Jong-il, whilst the leader is also believed to have daughters.

Kim Jong-il “inherited” the post of North Korean leader from his father, Kim il-Sung, who died in 1994. However, Kim il-Sung was then commemorated as the regime’s “eternal president”. His successors are merely designated head of state by virtue of being party leader within the one-party state.

Earlier this month Kim Jong-il was re-elected chairman of the National Defence Commission at a meeting of the Supreme People’s Assembly in the capital, in a vote considered a mere formality.

The speculation comes at a particularly fraught time in relations between North Korea and the outside world. On April 5 the regime test-fired a rocket which it claimed was a satellite, but intelligence agencies believe was a long-range ballistic missile.

United Nations Security Council criticism of the launch prompted North Korea to walk out of six-party talks aimed at persuading it to renounce its nuclear programme.

On Saturday Pyongyang announced it was recommencing work on reprocessing spent nuclear fuel rods, capable of producing weapons- grade plutonium. (dpa)

Novel imaging technology reveals ‘silent’ heart attack prevalence

Washington, Apr 21 (ANI): Individuals are often stunned when they undergo routine tests and find that they have had a heart attack. Now, a new research suggests that the so-called “silent” attacks occur much more frequently than suspected.

“Silent” heart attacks aren’t noted because they don’t cause any pain – or at least any pain that patients believe is related to their heart – and they don’t leave behind any telltale irregularities on electrocardiograms (ECGs).

New imaging research from Duke University Medical Center appearing in PLoS Medicine suggests that these heart attacks (now called unrecognized myocardial infarctions, or UMIs) may be happening much more frequently than physicians had suspected.

Duke investigators also found that these attacks were associated with a surprisingly high risk of untimely death.

“No one has fully understood how often these heart attacks occur and what they mean, in terms of prognosis,” says Han Kim, M.D., a cardiologist at Duke and the lead author of the study.

“With this study, we can now say that this subset of heart attacks, known as non-Q wave UMIs, is fairly common, at least among people with suspected coronary artery disease,” the expert added.

Physicians can usually tell when a heart attack has recently occurred by signature changes on ECGs and in certain blood enzyme levels. But if a heart attack happened in the distant past, physicians rely on the appearance of a specific alteration on an ECG called a Q-wave, which signals the presence of damaged tissue.

“The problem is, not all UMIs result in Q-waves on the electrocardiogram. Those that don’t are called non-Q-wave myocardial infarctions. Those are the ones we haven’t been able to count because we’ve never had a good way to document them,” says Kim.

Kim believed that using delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance, or DE-CMR, might be good way to get an idea about how frequently non-Q-wave myocardial infarctions occur.

Researchers used DE-CMR to examine185 patients suspected of having coronary artery disease but who had no record of any heart attacks. All of them were scheduled to undergo angiography to find out if excess plaque had narrowed or blocked any of their arteries. Investigators followed the patients for two years to see if the presence of any unrecognized non-Q-wave heart attacks were associated with a higher risk of death.

They found that 35 percent of the patients had evidence of a heart attack and that non-Q-wave attacks were three times more common than Q-wave UMIs. Non-Q-wave attacks were also more common among those with more severe coronary artery disease.

In addition, researchers discovered that those who suffered non-Q-wave UMIs had an 11-fold higher risk of death from any cause and a 17-fold higher risk of death due to heart problems, when compared to patients who did not have any heart damage. (ANI)
