Hiren Mohini murder: Detective returns empty-handed

Auckland, Apr 6(ANI): New Zealand Police have failed to nab Indian-origin origin cabbie Hiren Mohini’s murderer, after the detective heading the hunt for the suspected Asian man returned empty-handed from the country where the fugitive is hiding.

The name of the country cannot be identified for legal reasons, but a police source said that Investigation Head Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones visited the country in an effort to track down the suspected killer, who brutally stabbed Mohini to death in January.

Mohini, 39, died on January 31 after he was repeatedly stabbed in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden by a passenger he had picked up in the central business district.

The country to which the suspect fled does not have an extradition treaty with New Zealand, which could pose some difficulties if he was found and police wanted him brought back to Auckland to stand trial, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Earlier, certain media reports had claimed that Mohini’s murderer could have fled to China, and Auckland Police was in talks with international law enforcement agencies to locate him.

Detective Jones, however, had refused to confirm the claim that the suspected killer was in China.

A team of 50 officers have been hunting for Mohini’s killer, taking unprecedented steps such as putting up in the central city a billboard of a man filmed getting into the cab.

Police also released security camera footage of an Asian-looking man captured on CCTV in the CBD before the killing.

He was carrying a bag similar to a distinctive bloodied blue bag found a short distance from where Mohini died.

Jones had said the bag and a distinctive black knitted cap in it could be vital clues in finding the killer. The cap had a large white logo outlined with three circles. (ANI)

Giant killer Del Potro believes he is the biggest tennis star on the circuit

New York, Sep.16 (ANI): Argentine tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro still can’t believe he has won this US Open, but now believes he is the biggest new star in tennis.

“It’s my best sensation,” he said. “Since my childhood I have dreamed of this trophy. I have realised my dream. It is an incredible moment. It’s amazing match, amazing people. Everything is perfect. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week I will be believing in this. Now, I can’t believe it,” The Mirror quoted Del Potro, as saying.

The 6 ft 6in Argentine caused a massive upset by beating a fustered Roger Federer in five thrilling sets in the US Open final.

The world No.1, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, was seeking his sixth successive title after winning 40 consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows.

But he was simply battered into submission by the 20-yearold with a murderous forehand making his first appearance in a Grand Slam final. Despite a horrible start, Del Potro triumphed 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 in four hours and six minutes – the longest US Open final for 20 years. (ANI)

Master gene that switches on disease-fighting cells identified

London, Sep 14 (ANI): British scientists have identified the master gene, called E4bp4, that causes blood stem cells to turn into disease-fighting ‘Natural Killer’ (NK) immune cells.

The discovery, by researchers at Imperial College London, UCL and the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research, could one day help scientists boost the body’s production of these frontline tumour-killing cells, creating new ways to treat cancer.

By ‘knocking out’ E4bp4 in a mouse model, the researchers created the world’s first animal model entirely lacking NK cells, but with all other blood cells and immune cells intact.

The breakthrough model should help solve the mystery of the role that Natural Killer cells play in autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

According to many scientists, these diseases are a result of malfunctioning NK cells that turn on the body and attack healthy cells, which cause disease instead of fighting it.

They believe that clarifying NK cells’ role could lead to new ways of treating these conditions.

Natural Killer cells – a type of white blood cell – are a major component of the human body’s innate, quick-response immune system, providing a fast frontline defence against tumours, viruses and bacterial infections.

The gene E4bp4 is the ‘master gene’ for NK cell production, which means it is the primary driver that causes blood stem cells in the bone marrow to differentiate into NK cells.

Led by Dr Hugh Brady, the researchers are hoping to progress with a drug treatment for cancer patients which reacts with the protein expressed by their E4bp4 gene, causing their bodies to produce a higher number of NK cells than normal, to increase the chances of successfully destroying tumours.

“If increased numbers of the patient’s own blood stem cells could be coerced into differentiating into NK cells, via drug treatment, we would be able to bolster the body’s cancer-fighting force, without having to deal with the problems of donor incompatibility,” Nature quoted Brady as saying.

The researchers proved the pivotal role E4bp4 plays in NK production when they knocked the gene out in a mouse model.

Without E4bp4 the mouse produced no NK cells whatsoever but other types of blood cell were unaffected.

“Now finally, with our discovery of the NK cell master gene and subsequent creation of our mouse model, we will be able to find out if the progression of these diseases is impeded or aided by the removal of NK cells from the equation. This will solve the often-debated question of whether NK cells are always the ‘good guys’, or if in certain circumstances they cause more harm than good,” said Brady.

The study has been published in Nature Immunology. (ANI)

Killer whales have to raise their voices to be heard over ship noise

Washington, September 11 (ANI): A new research has determined that killer whales have to raise their voices to be heard over ship noise, and the effort may be wearing the whales out as they try to find food amid dwindling numbers of salmon.

According to a report in National Geographic News, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) carried out the research.

The research indicates that the killer whales of Puget Sound, a complex of inland marine waterways in the northwestern part of Washington, US, make more calls and clicks while foraging than while traveling, suggesting that such mealtime conservations are key to coordinating hunts.

“(The killer whales’) call exchange is incredibly important, and vessel noises have the potential to mask these calls,” said research leader Marla Holt of Seattle’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center, which is run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Holt and colleagues’ previous research had shown that some killer whales make louder calls to be heard over vessel rumblings-just as people raise their voices to talk over the din of a cocktail party.

Now, the researchers think the cacophony could be causing the region’s killer whales to use up more energy during hunts, even as their preferred prey, chinook salmon, are on the decline.

In Puget Sound, a small group of killer whales known as the Southern Residents has been found to be particularly well-suited to eating salmon-even down to the whales’ tooth size.

These animals don’t eat seals or other mammals, as do the transient killer whales that migrate through the sound.

In the mid- to late 1990s, the Southern Resident population mysteriously shrank by nearly 20 percent, from 97 to 88 animals. Today, there are 85 individuals.

In 2005, the federal government listed the population as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act.

No one knows for sure, but the cause was likely a combination of fewer salmon, exposure to toxic contaminants, and vessel noise, according to Lynne Barre of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Regional Office.

Holt’s work adds to existing data that have already prompted NOAA to propose a new killer whale protection law that would make all boats keep at least 600 feet (200 yards) away from the animals around Washington State.

The existing law allows boats to approach as close as 300 feet (100 yards), and some research has shown this influences the whales’ behavior.

“A lot of people would argue, Why focus on these vessel regulations?” Holt said. “But it’s one thing we can do immediately,” he added. (ANI)

US Army Nurse reveals ‘humane’ side of Saddam Hussein

Washington, Sep. 11 (ANI): Saddam Hussein might be remembered as a brutal international criminal by the rest of the world; but to retired U.S. Army Nurse Robert Ellis, who spent more time with the dictator than any other American, he was a patient with a humane side.

Ellis worked as the senior American medical advisor at Baghdad’s Camp Cropper, where Hussein was held for eight months until his execution in December 2006, Fox News reports.

During this period, Hussein who went by the code name “Victor” grew close to his caregiver, who was known to him by the code name “Alice.”

The report quoted Ellis as saying that when he told Hussein that he had to return to St. Louis to see his dying brother, Hussein hugged him and said: “I will be your brother.”

Ellis’ new book, “Caring for Victor,” is a record of his time with the ruthless tyrant.

For Ellis, the mission caused serious internal conflict.

“I was always conflicted throughout the whole mission. My job was to keep these people alive and healthy so they could be interrogated,” he said.

Ellis says that by remaining “non-judgmental,” he was able to see another side of a human who was considered to be a brutal killer.

“By me spending time with him, I got to see his other side, a side that you don’t hear about. They play by a different set of rules over there,” he added. (ANI)

New ‘Taliban killer’ sights for British troopers on Afghanistan frontier

London, Sep 9(ANI): After reports of British soldiers facing weapons’ shortage in the Afghanistan frontier, a range of new thermal weapons’ sights has been launched to enable soldiers to dominate the battlefield in Afghanistan.

According to reports, the British Ministry of Defence will buy almost 11,000 new sights for 150 million pounds, allowing the Army to equip 95 infantry companies of more than 100 men.

As part of the Ministry of Defence’s Future Integrated Soldier Technology (Fist) programme troops have been issued with a small glass prism-like sight, which project a red laser dot. It would help a soldier to quickly align the red dot on an enemy who is very close and hit him with guaranteed accuracy.

“This means the infantryman can pick up the enemy coming in. At night the enemy’s field craft has to be pretty adept because he has to remain in dead ground all the way up to your position and that is hard yards. This will allow us to dominate the night,” The Telegraph quoted Col Bill Pointing, a former battalion commander in charge of the project, as saying.

“This will allow the infantry to operate quicker, better, at longer range, at night and in difficult weather conditions,” he added.

It will provide improved protection, day and night surveillance and target acquisition, and assistance with navigation, command and control and battle preparation.

The new thermal weapons’ sights would also allow soldiers to conduct surveillance and engage targets in all weather and light levels, including zero light where normal night sights would be rendered ineffective.

“There is a considerable improvement in terms of us infantry engaging the Taliban at very close quarters in the villages of Afghanistan, especially at night time. It will help us to put very effective fire into them,” said Cpl Ciaran Hanna of the Irish Guards. (ANI)

Jordan furious with Alex Reid for lying about sex film

London, Sep 7 (ANI): Former model Katie Price, a.k.a. Jordan, reportedly got furious when she came to know about her lover Alex Reid’s involvement in a sex film, which shows him naked in a rape scene.

Before the new nude footage emerged, the 31-year-old had publicly defended her boyfriend from porn allegations by saying that he did not strip for the ultra-violent flick ‘Killer Bitch’.

However, Jordan was left red-faced when Reid showed her a censored version of the film, cutting out his X-rated bits..

According to reports, the film almost cost Reid his love.

“He made a mistake and it nearly cost him his relationship with Kate,” the Daily Star quoted one of Jordan’s friends as saying.

“He’s pulled out of the film and is looking to sue the makers because there has obviously been a very big leak,” the friend added.

Though the two showed a united front at the Burghley Horse Trials, near Stamford, Lincolnshire, the atmosphere between them remained icy as she promoted her KP Equestrian range.

“Despite putting on a brave face, Kate is furious that Alex has betrayed her by lying about the film and keeping secret scenes from her,” a source said.

“She believed everything he said and stood by him, but has been left looking like a total mug. This will leave their relationship in turmoil.

“Kate was all business at Burghley but is set to haul him over the coals for humiliating her once she gets him alone.

“Alex let her make a fool of herself on national TV and it’s touch and go whether she’ll be able to forgive him.

“She’s furious and he’s treading on very thin ice,” the source added. (ANI)

Transsexual killer wins right to be in women’s prison

London, September 5 (ANI): A transsexual killer, who attempted to rape a female shop assistant, is moving to a women’s prison after getting the green light from a judge.

The 27-year-old won an argument in the court when it was ruled that keeping her in a men’s prison breached her human rights.

The murderer, named only as ‘A’, was given a life sentence for crimes committed while a man, reports the Sun.

She was sentenced to five years in jail for manslaughter after strangling a boyfriend with a pair of tights. Some time later her release, she tried to rape a woman shop assistant after tying her with a suspender belt.

‘A’, who grew breasts after undergoing hormone treatment and wears skirts and make-up in her cell, has also been allowed to have full sex-change surgery, from which she was previously banned while in a male prison.

Deputy Judge David Elvin QC said ‘A’ had endured gender dysphoria from an early age, and Justice Secretary Jack Straw’s decision to keep her in a male prison breached the European Convention on Human Rights.

Attorneys said ‘A’ was “a woman trapped in a man’s body” and the ruling “gave her hope”. (ANI)

‘Street fighter’ Katich must replace ‘soft’ Ponting to revive Aussies: Ex-players

Melbourne, Aug 30 (ANI): Australia needs a street fighter like Simon Katich to trigger a revival, after calls for sacking of Ricky Ponting in the wake of the Ashes loss under the Tasmanian’s captaincy for the second time in four years

Australian cricket has lost the ruthless cutting edge cultivated by Steve Waugh that made them one of the most feared teams, according to former players.

Former Test wicketkeeper Steve Rixon said Ponting is a magnificent batsman, but he will never be regarded as a great captain, and added that Australia have lost their killer instinct under him.

Ponting became the first Australian captain in 119 years to lose consecutive series on English soil, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Rixon says the take-no-prisoners psyche cultivated by Waugh has been eroded.

“I don’t relate to the brand of cricket we are playing under Ricky. We aren’t playing the sort of cricket that has made us ruthless and a team that no one really likes to play,” Rixon said.

“Teams aren’t capitulating under pressure like they used to. We seem to have a more timid nature . . . and that could certainly have a bearing on a tight series like the one in England.

“We’re struggling against sides we should be beating. England is renowned for capitulating under pressure, but we never got ruthless or flexed our muscle,” he said.

“If we’re going to look at change, I’d be looking at Simon Katich. Simon is a tenacious leader. I worked with him at NSW and I know what he can offer as a captain. He’s tough, he won’t take a backward step, he plays aggressive cricket – and that is synonymous with the Australian style,” Rixon said.

Former Test all-rounder Greg Matthews also likes the way Katich leads from the front.

“Before the Ashes series, I felt the strongest man in Australian cricket was Simon Katich. His character, his intent, he bats like his life depends on every ball. It’s just obvious for me. If I was in the trenches, he’d be the first guy I’d pick,” Matthews said. (ANI)

US Fritzl being probed for murder of 10 prostitutes

New York, Aug 29 (ANI): As more details of Phillip Garrido, who kidnapped a girl 18 years ago and made her his sex slave, emerged, police are now eyeing him as the possible serial killer of 10 prostitutes in Northern California in the 1990s.

The police are looking over Jaycee Lee Dugard’s alleged abductor’s home in Antioch, Calif., searching for clues in the unsolved hooker murders.

Detectives have long thought the killings in both Antioch and the nearby town of Pittsburg were the work of a serial killer but have never had a clear suspect.

According to the authorities, several of the slain women’s bodies were found near an industrial park where Garrido, 58, worked in the 1990s, and one of the victims was a 15-year-old schoolgirl who disappeared after leaving a party in Antioch in 1999.

Cops had missed the chance to rescue Dugard on November 30, 2006 after a female neighbour called 911 to report that some people, including young children, were living in tents behind the house.

“Garrido was psychotic and had a sexual addiction,” the New York Post quoted her as telling authorities at the time that. (ANI)

Katie Price’s new beau proclaims his love for her for first time

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Katie Price’s new boyfriend, Alex Reid, has confessed his love for the hottie for the first time.

“I have told her I love her pretty much every day since we met, 50 million times a day,” the Sun quoted him as saying.e said: “I’ve never felt like this. Ever. And I’ve never felt more comfortable and ready for this relationship.”

Asked whether the love was mutual, he convincingly replied: “Yeah. God, yeah!”

The pair apparently met at the birthday party of former singer Michelle Heaton, after price parted ways with her estranged singer husband, Peter Andre.

Cagefighter Reid also dismissed rumours that his new film Killer Bitch was a porn flick, insisting that it was a gangster movie. (ANI)

Murdered Iranian woman’s killer identified

Tehran, Aug.20 (ANI): The man accused of killing Iranian woman protester Neda Soltan during an opposition rally against the June 20 presidential result, has been identified as Abbas Kargar Javid, a pro-government militiaman.

The identification challenges the Iranian regime’s claim that foreign agents shot the young woman, who became a global symbol of resistance to the Government of President Ahmadinejad.

One picture appears on Javid’s Basij identification card, which was taken off him by the crowd that stopped him briefly when he fled the murder scene during a massive demonstration against electoral fraud on June 20.

Photographs of that card and another that was issued by the Interior Ministry have been posted on the Internet, and the doctor who tried to save Soltan as she lay dying on a Tehran pavement has confirmed that they show the man who was stopped, reports The Times.

“I can testify for certain that it is the same person,” Dr. Arash Hejazi told The Times.

Dr Hejazi said that he had checked with others who witnessed Javid’s detention and they, too, had confirmed that it was the same man.

The regime has put blame for Ms Soltan’s murder on fellow demonstrators, the CIA, hostile foreign governments including Britain, and even the BBC.

Dr Hejazi, a student at Oxford Brookes University, had returned to Iran for a business trip after the June 12 election but he fled after featuring prominently in the video of Soltan’s last moments. (ANI)

Theron stunned by South African men’s ‘sex with young virgin’ AIDS cure belief

Washington, August 20 (ANI): Hollywood actress Charlize Theron is stunned that despite a lot of efforts being made to spread AIDS awareness among people, HIV-positive men in her native South Africa believe that they will be cured of the disease if they have sex with a young virgin.

She founded the Cape Town Rape Crisis Centre in 1999 with a view to halting her homeland’s AIDS epidemic.

However, even after a decade, she still finds people who think that they can find simple cures for the killer disease.

“You have huge HIV numbers and nobody is educated on how you get HIV,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“Many think if they rape a child or virgin they will will be cured of the disease… It’s a problem where education and people are being naive, cultures that are very superstitious,” she added. (ANI)

Scientists discover deadly plant that eats rats

London, August 18 (ANI): British scientists have discovered a deadly plant that eats rats, and is believed to be the largest meat-eating shrub.

According to a report in The Sun, the giant pitcher plant lures rodents into its slipper-shaped mouth and dissolves them with acid-like enzymes.

Scientists, led by botanists Stewart McPherson and Alastair Robinson, tracked it down on Mount Victoria in the Philippines after hearing that missionaries had seen “whole rats” being eaten.

“The plant produces spectacular traps which catch not only insects, but also rodents. It is remarkable that it remained undiscovered until the 21st century,” said McPherson, of Poole, Dorset.

The research team named the incredibly rare species after legendary wildlife broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

“My team and I named it in honour of Sir David whose work has inspired generations toward a better understanding of the beauty and diversity of the natural world,” said McPherson.

“I was contacted by the team shortly after the discovery and they asked if they could name it after me. I was delighted and told them, ‘Thank you very much’,” said Sir David.

“I’m absolutely flattered. This is a remarkable species the largest of its kind. I’m told it can catch rats then eat them with its digestive enzymes. It’s certainly capable of that,” he added.

The plant, now dubbed Nepenthes attenboroughii, is green and red and can grow a stem more than 4ft long. It is found only in the scrub high on the windswept slopes of Mount Victoria.

McPherson and former Cambridge University botanist Robinson made their discovery during an expedition in 2007.

But, they have only just described the killer shrub in a journal after a three-year study of all 120 species of pitcher plant. (ANI)

Scary metaphors can affect public health

Washington, Aug 8 (ANI): Using scary metaphors for any kind of natural disaster or health scare can not only make people notice it, but it can also spread panic or cynicism among populations, according to a study.

“Such terms can make people sit up and listen, but they can also lead to panic or cynicism,” said Professor Brigitte Nerlich, who led the research.

She added: “Recent advice on swine flu has centred on basic hygiene, which makes people feel they can do something practical, instead of being mere victims of so-called “superbugs” or “killer viruses”. But obviously this is easier to do when a disease is relatively benign.”

She pointed out that easier Internet access might also help people to feel in control-an issue that emerged from a previous ESRC project on foot and mouth disease carried out in Nottingham.

These days, especially in the context of swine flu, “email, Twitter, and public health sites all give information and advice which can be useful to worried individuals and may dampen down panic. ‘But more research needs to be done in this area,” she said.

The research focused on MRSA along with avian flu and was conducted by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in nursing, the social study of health and illness, environmental studies and linguistics.

The study compared the language of biosecurity, hygiene and cleanliness used in policy documents and media coverage with the language used by hospital matrons and poultry farmers dealing with the realities of MRSA and avian flu.

“We found that the way people communicate about a threat largely determines how they understand it and behave towards it. Additional findings established that media coverage of hygiene and cleanliness in hospitals tended to portray doctors and nurses engaged in a heroic “battle” against “intelligent super bugs. This was personified by the modern matron wielding the weapon of “cleanliness,” said Nerlich.

After conducting interviews with hospital matrons, the researchers found that a gap between the media portrayal and the reality on the wards.

Matrons said that the limitations in their authority over contractors, and time constraints made it impossible for them to spend even half their time as a “visible presence” on the wards.

“This was another example of the control issue. Modern matrons have limited powers to limit the spread of infection or improve hygiene. For instance, they can’t hire extra nursing staff for barrier nursing or deal with problems with cleaning contractors. Our findings highlight the need for policy messages to be translated more accurately into practice,” said Nerlich. (ANI)

Scientists discover pot-bellied dino that had claws like ‘Wolverine’

Washington, July 16 (ANI): Scientists have discovered the most complete skeleton of a type of pot-bellied dinosaur, a therizinosaur, in southern Utah, US, which had claws like that of the fictional ‘X-Men’ character ‘Wolverine’.

According to a report in National Geographic News, dubbed Nothronychus graffami, the 13-foot-tall (4-meter-tall) therizinosaur lived about 92.5 million years ago in what is present-day Utah.

When alive, the animal would have sported a beaked mouth and forelimbs tipped with 9 inch- (22 cm)-long sickle claws.

In life, sheathed in hornlike keratin, the talons would have each been about a foot (30 centimeters) long, or about as long as the dinosaur’s head.

In addition to its imposing claws, which are a therizinosaur trademark, the newfound dinosaur had a less-than-fearsome potbelly, a birdlike beak, stumpy legs, and a short tail.

Its stumpy legs, large gut and other features suggest the lumbering giant scarfed down plants rather than chasing after meaty prey.

Because these facts suggest that the animal was a plant-eater, scientists are puzzled about the use of the killer claws for the dinosaur.

“We really don’t know,” said study team member Lindsay Zanno of the Field Museum in Chicago.

“There are some things we can rule out, such as digging. Other than that, the claws may have been used for defense, to forage for plants, or to attract mates,” she added. (ANI)

Women Sakhi Mandal destroy liquor dens in Gujarat

Surat, July 11 (ANI): Members of Sakhi Mandal, a women’s group in Gujarat’s Surat district, destroyed liquor dens.

They burnt all material and spurious liquor kept in drums launching their drive against liquor barons on Saturday.

The drive followed death of over 122 persons in a hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad.

“We heard about the liquor tragedy in Ahmedabad. We then decided to take up this drive to break down all these liquor dens. We are ready to face all consequences as we have a strong force of the women community,” Meena Patel, a member of Sakhi Mandal.

Manjula Patel, another member of the group, alleged that the cops and bootleggers are hand-in-gloves because of which these dens still survive in the state.

“We have caught these bootleggers many a times, but our strength is of no force in front of them. They have threatened us and also have tried to attack us with weapons. We have complained to the police. But they only give us assurance and do not take actions,” Manjula said.

Meanwhile, the toll in Ahmedabad hooch tragedy has risen to 122 after nine more deaths were reported.

The police said that now 122 people have died and 227 were admitted to various city hospitals. The city is witnessing deaths from spurious liquor since last five days.

The Crime Branch, of the Gujarat Police is investigating the case. The investigation has revealed that the spurious liquor was supplied from Mahemdabad town in Kheda district.

Though the Police have identified one Vinod Chauhan alias Dagri as the main supplier of the killer brew, but the Congress Party is alleging that a BJP councilor from Ahmedabad was the key supplier of poisonous alcohol. (ANI)

The ongoing session of the Gujarat Assembly is facing uproar from the Opposition Congress. he party alleged the failure of the Narendra Modi government to prevent the suply of the spurious brew in the dry state. They are also demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minster Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has requested the opposition parties not to politicize the issue.

Between 1977 to 1989,when Congress was in power in Gujrat there were seven big hooch tragedies, every time, the BJP blamed the ruling Congress for its failure to implement prohibition law. So the Congress is not sparing this opportunity to target the Modi Government. (ANI)

Weed killers can improve nutritional value of important food crop

Washington, July 9 (ANI): In a new study, scientists have obtained first evidence that the use of weed killers in farmers’ fields boosts the nutritional value of an important food crop.

The study determined that the application of two common herbicides to several varieties of sweet corn significantly increased the amount of key nutrients termed carotenoids in the corn kernels.

In the new study, Dean Kopsell and colleagues note that farmers grow about 240,000 acres of sweet corn in the United States each year, making it an important food crop.

Corn is among only a few vegetable crops that are good sources of zeaxanthin carotenoids.

Consuming carotenoid-rich vegetables may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (a leading cause of vision loss among older people), heart disease, and cancer, the study noted.

The scientists exposed several varieties of sweet corn plants to the herbicide mesotrione or a combination of mesotrione and atrazine, another commonly used weed killer, and harvested mature corn 45 days later.

Herbicide applications made the corn an even-better source of carotenoids, boosting levels in the mature kernels of some varieties by up to 15 percent.

It specifically increased levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, the major carotenoids in sweet corn kernels, which studies have linked to a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration. (ANI)
