Youth Congress membership set to touch half million in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (IANS) The membership of the Youth Congress is all set to touch the half million-mark in Kerala, a Congress legislator said Sunday.

Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunadh, who will contest for the post of Youth Congress president in the elections to be held in August, told IANS that initial indications are that the total number of Youth Congress members in the state will touch half a million.

‘We can’t make a comparison to the past because such a membership drive has never taken place,’ Vishnunadh said.

‘There could be close to a lakh new members and we feel that there would be at least one lakh women members also. The correct figures are expected in the coming days as the two returning officers are busy compiling the data,’ Vishnunadh said.

The minimum age for entry into the Youth Congress is 18 and the maximum age is 35. This time instead of dividing the Youth Congress based on the 14 districts of the state, each of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state have been divided into two.

Vipin Jose, a member of the Youth Congress who is planning to contest for the post of president from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha unit said: ‘The best part this time is that it has been made very clear in the rules that one person will have only one party post and hence more number of people can move up the ladder. This time a person can take membership from where he lives only.’

Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and Mohammed Azharuddin had come to the state for interaction with Youth Congress members.

Monsoon makes no headway in 6 days – govt

India’s annual monsoon, which is vital for farm and economic growth, has not advanced for the past six days after bringing rains to a far-flung island three days ahead of normal, weather officials said on Thursday.

Monsoon winds were weak, and may need up to two days to strengthen, D. Sivananda Pai, director of the National Climate Center in Pune, told Reuters over phone.

India Meteorological Department has forecast the June-September monsoon would hit the mainland on May 30 in Kerala.

“It is already raining in Kerala but we are waiting for certain characteristics of monsoon,” Pai said.

The rains reached the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 17, two days ahead of schedule, before moving to many parts of the Bay of Bengal in the following week.

The progress has not been swift since then due to last week’s cyclone Laila on India’s east coast.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government is banking heavily on monsoon rains, which irrigate 60 percent of the country’s farms, to calm food prices that soared after last year’s driest season in nearly four decades.

The government, which was voted back to power by a bigger mandate from the rural poor last year, is facing severe criticism due to high prices, especially of food. (Reporting by Mayank Bhardwaj; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)

This is my second birth: Crash survivor

Kasargode (Kerala), May 27 (IANS) With one hand in a sling from a dislocated shoulder caused by his ‘great escape’, K. Krishnan, 47, one of the eight who survived the Mangalore air crash, returned home at Mangad near Udma to a hero’s welcome.

Waiting for him anxiously was his 72-year-old-mother Vellachi, who even though told that he had miraculously escaped the crash that killed 158 passengers on board, could not believe her luck until she saw her son in flesh and blood.

Krishnan was travelling in the IX 812 Dubai-Mangalore flight that overshot the runway while landing at the Bajpe airport, about 20 km from Mangalore, Saturday.

Tears of joy trickled down his cheeks when he saw a large number of people waiting to receive him. It was a home coming that would remain etched in the minds of all those who had gathered here to receive their dear friend and relative.

‘I got my son back. This is certainly a gift from God,’ was all Vellachi could say amid tears as she kissed and hugged her son.

Accompanying Krishnan from Mangalore after he was discharged from a hospital was his wife Bindu and his two daughters, eight-year-old Keerthi and three-year-old Kripa.

Krishnan who works as a helper in a company in Dubai, said: ‘No doubt this is my second birth.’

Narrating his ‘great escape’, he said he still could not believe that he had managed to escape.

‘It was a huge sound that I heard when the aircraft came down and then everything happened quickly. I saw an opening in the aircraft above my head and in a moment I was scaling down the aircraft and fell into the greenery. Then I knew that the aircraft would burst into flames and in a few minutes it happened as I ran for my life,’ recalled Krishnan to IANS.

He remembers that the first thing he did was to call up home around 6.30 a.m informing his wife to say that he was safe.

‘I passed on the good news of my escape and the bad news of the aircraft going up in flames to my wife,’ said Krishnan.

But the five stitches that he has on his forehead constantly remind him of the accident.

‘I got many calls from my company inquiring about my health. I have also lost my passport,’ said Krishnan, who has been working in Dubai for the last nine years.

Asked if he is ready to fly back again, Krishnan could only smile.

Mistaken for pirate, Indian fisherman shot off Oman coast

In what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, crew from a passing foreign cargo ship off the coast of Oman fired upon a group of fishermen, fearing they were pirates, and killed one of them. Another fisherman was injured in the incident on Monday morning.

Raju Ambrose, 34, was declared ‘dead on arrival’ by doctors at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah on the southwestern coast of Oman, said Manpreet Singh, president of the Indian Social Club Salalah. Ambrose, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is survived by his wife, two teenaged daughters and a seven-year-old son.

Apparently, shots were fired without any warning or provocation from the ship at the group of nearly 75 fishermen who had set off from Salalah on 25 boats. Singh said it appears the ship’s crew mistook the fishermen for pirates.

“The crew opened fire indiscriminately at a place called Sarbatat off the coast of Salalah and two people were injured,” said Singh. “Both the victims were rushed to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah but Ambrose was declared as having been brought dead on arrival. The other fisherman, Sebastian, who was on a different boat, was treated and later discharged.”

An eyewitness said that by the time the fishermen realised that they were being fired upon, it was too late. “We were fishing when we suddenly heard a loud noise that took everyone by surprise,” said Joy, who was on the boat with Ambrose.

“At first, I thought that the sound was coming from the ship. But later, I realised that people on the ship were firing at us. We go out into the deep sea quite often, but such an incident has never happened. In fact, we wave at all the ships that pass by the area.”

Joy added that the fishermen tried to steer the boat away, but in vain. “All of a sudden, a bullet hit Raju and he fell overboard. The other fisherman on the boat, Francis, and I managed to pull him out of the water and then we fled for our lives. We took him to the shore with the help of other fishermen and from there to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital, but it was too late.”

Many cargo ships on the high seas off the Horn of Africa have opted for armed protection after a spate of attacks and hijacks by pirates based in Somalia for ransom.

Indian Tantric tries killing sceptic live on TV, fails

London, March 20 (ANI): A sceptic challenged an Indian tantric to kill him live on television, after the guru proclaimed that he could kill another man using only his mystical powers.

Sanal Edamaruku, self-appointed sceptic-in-chief of Indian Rationalists’ Association, demanded Pandit Surender Sharma to exterminate him.

Both men were invited to a talk show for the challenge.

The episode was banned from being screened on television, but could be viewed on Youtube.

However, even hours later, Edamaruku was alive and smiling.

“He was over, finished, completely destroyed!” The Times quoted him as saying.

He added: “The immediate goal I have is to stop these fraudulent babas and gurus. I want people to make their own decisions. They should not be guided by ignorance, but by knowledge.

“I’d like to see a post-religious society — that would be an ideal dream, but I don’t know how long it would take.”

Edamaruku is also part-time journalist and publisher from the southern state of Kerala.
