New Delhi, May 25 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Chhattisgarh human rights activist Binayak Sen, who has been charged of aiding and abetting Naxal activities in Chattisgarh and was lodged in a jail for the past 22 months.

Sen has been in custody since May 2007, and he had contended that there was no evidence against him to be booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The Chhattisgarh Government has accused Sen, who is the vice-president of the People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), of acting as a courier for an alleged Naxalite who is in jail.

Earlier, Sen had filed a bail petition for an urgent hearing.

He had sought bail on medical grounds, saying that he had been suffering from a heart ailment and needs treatment at the Christian Medical College in Tamil Nadu. SC turns down plea of student to sport beard

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by a Muslim student of a Christian school, claiming that sporting a beard was his fundamental right. The apex court held that an unaided minority-run school had the right to frame its own rules and regulations.

Sixteen-year-old Mohammad Salim, son of a vegetable vendor in Sironj in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, had moved the apex court against a high court order, upholding the decision of Nirmala Convent Higher Secondary School to throw him out for refusing to shave off his beard. A bench comprising Justices R.V. Raveendranan and Markandeya Katju declined to accept the plea of Salim’s counsel, B.A. Khan, that the school’s regulations could not overshadow the Constitution.

Khan had argued that since Article 25 of the Constitution guaranteed the right to embrace any religion, forcing the student to shave off his beard would violate his fundamental right.

New Delhi, Feb.4 (ANI): Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari will leave on a four-day official visit to Myanmar on Thursday, leading a high-level delegation comprising Parliamentarians and businessmen.

The Vice President Ansari’s visit gains significance in terms of strengthening ties between the two countries, as India wishes to engage Myanmar on the highest-level and to intensify the process of a series of high-level reciprocal visits, a trend that commenced in recent years, said Vivek Katju, Additional secretary of the political and international organisations (PLO) here.

India looks upon Myanmar as a significant destination for cooperation in energy sector, power, transport, and telecommunication under India’s “Look-East Policy” as Katju described it as a symbol of growing relations with Myanmar.

Though Katju said that the bilateral trade between the two nations is relatively lower than what India shares with its neighbours but this visit would go a long way to have desired trade between the two countries.

On arrival in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar’s new capital, the Indian delegation is scheduled to hold talks with the Vice Senior General Maung Aye, the Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).

The high-level business delegation comprises officials of the Steel Authority of India, TATA motors, Gas Authority of India Ltd., Bharat Heavy Electric Limited among others.

India is also helping Myanmar in building infrastructure and boosting development. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has built the 160 km-long Tamu-Kalewa-Kaylemyo road on the Indo-Myanmar border.

Last year, the two sides inked agreements on bilateral investment protection while New Delhi committed 120 million dollars line of credit for power facilities in Myanmar. By Ravi Shankar (ANI)
