World’s second cloned buffalo calf ‘Garima’ born in Haryana

Karnal (Haryana), June 24 (ANI): A team of veterinary scientists of the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal in Haryana has successfully conceptualised the birth of the world’s second cloned buffalo calf.

The scientists tried out a new and advanced mode known as ‘Hand-guided Cloning Technique’.

The buffalo calf named Garima is a female and it was born through caesarean operation. The weight of the baby calf was around 43 kilograms at the time of birth.

According to the scientists, Garima is healthy and having normal weight gain likes other naturally born calves.

This cloning technique developed at NDRI, Karnal, has the potential to create elite breed of buffaloes of desired sex which will contribute in further increasing India’s milk production.

Dr. A.K. Srivastav headed the team of the scientists comprising of Dr. S K Singla, Dr. R S Manik, Dr. M S Chauhan, Dr. P Palta, Dr. Shiv Parsad, Dr. R S Shah and Dr. A George.

Keeping in view the fact of shortage of outstanding he-buffaloes, the ‘Hand-guided Cloning’ can decrease this gap and supply the bulls in the shortest possible time.

The world’s first ever-cloned buffalo calf was also born at NDRI on February 6, 2009 but it died within a week due to pneumonia. (ANI)

Karnal (Haryana), Apr 30 (ANI): A major fire broke in the godown of a ghee (clarified butter) plant at the industrial town of Karnal in Haryana on Thursday.

This mishap took place at Ruchi Soybean Industry’s plant around 6:00 a.m. and it was detected to have spread from the ghee godown.

Ghee worth thousands of rupees of clarified butter had been stored in the godown, which was completely destroyed.

“Three vehicles of fire brigade came and they tried their best to bring the blaze under control. But the fire keeps spreading because of the ghee in the plastic bags kept at the back,” said Chandra Prakash Kataria, an eye witness.

Rajiv Wadhwa, owner of the plant said that a couple of fire-tenders had been pressed into service to douse the blaze after a gap of 45 minutes.

“I saw smoke coming out from the godown. After 45 minutes, two vehicles of fire brigade reached here and after a while, their water was finished. Since the roof was broken, the fire further increased,” said Wadhwa. It took four hours to bring the fire under control.

However, no causalities have been reported so far. (ANI)

Precaution landings delay flights

Precautionary landings by two flights delayed many others at the Delhi airport on Wednesday evening. A Kolkata-bound JetLite flight and a Kingfisher flight from Dehradun had precautionary landings at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which held up other flights.

A JetLite flight to Kolkata (S2-911) had to return minutes after taking off at 6.40 p.m.

after the pilot suspected a technical snag in the aircraft. The flight carrying 41 passengers landed safely and took off again after the aircraft was thoroughly checked.

“The pilot suspected a snag and that is why the plane was brought back. It made a completely safe landing and no problems were encountered in the aircraft,” an airlines spokesman said.

A Kingfisher flight from Dehradun (IT-4816) also made a priority landing at the airport. The pilot of the flight noticed a warning from the on-board system, which monitors engine parameters in flights, and requested the ATC for a priority landing.

The ATR 42-500 type aircraft with 50 passengers and three crew on board made a safe landing at the airport. The precautionary landings, coupled with bad weather, resulted in many evening departures getting delayed.

“The air-traffic congestion in the evening was not helping matters. And normal operations were also hampered with some flights making priority landings,” a senior airport official said on the condition of anonymity.

“Many departures were held up due to the priority landing and the arriving aircraft had to hover around for close to an hour,” he said. “My flight was expected to land at Delhi airport at 6.20 p.

m. but finally landed at around 7.15 p.

m.

The plane hovered above areas like Karnal before landing in Delhi,” a passenger, who’d arrived from Mumbai, said.
