CPI-M leader Brinda Karat released on bail

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Sep 12 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat was released on bail on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, she was taken into custody along with some All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) activists at the Tirupuragundram police station when they were on their way to Uthaopuram village.

Police said that Karat and AIDWA activists were not permitted to hold a meeting in the village and when they tried to enter the village police had to stop and arrest them.

“The leader through her representation had already asked for holding a meeting in a sensitive village, but the permission was turned down citing reason for law and order situation,”

“But, in spite of that the concerned had tried to enter the village and during which she was stopped and arrested and taken to Tirupuragundram women police station. But, now she has been released on bail,” said Manoharan, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Madurai.

Karat was later released on bail, but she termed her arrest as illegal and said that she wasn’t visiting the village to cause any trouble.

“When I asked them (police authorities) the reason for my detention, they said they have got news that there are trouble makers in the village. So, I said who are these troublemakers. If there are troublemakers in the village you detain and arrest the troublemakers. Why are you arresting us? We are not going there to cause any trouble,” Brinda Karat said. (ANI)

CPI (M) defends Buddha over skipping politburo meet

New Delhi, Sep 5 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) dismissed reports that West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was deliberately avoiding party’s two-day politburo meet, which began today on Saturday in the national capital.

According to reports, senior party leaders including Brinda Karat claimed that Buddhadeb had just recovered from viral fever and was advised by doctors to take rest, forcing party members urging him to stay back in Kolkata.

The CPI(M) Politburo is meeting to finalise a document to deal with its organisational problems, which led to its defeat in the recent polls in West Bengal and Kerala.

It is being assumed that topics regarding Lalgarh could be raised during the two-day meet, may have prompted Buddhadeb to give the meeting a miss.

It is also said that Buddhadeb is upset over reports of his successor or deputy being selected during the meet.

Differences between the West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI (M) leaders have been reported ever since party’s failure in the Lok Sabha elections, especially after the defeat they experienced in West Bengal during Lok Sabha polls. (ANI)

UPA’s General Budget draws flak of opposition parties

New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): As Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented the first General Budget under UPA Government’s second inning, various opposition parties opted to highlight its loopholes in their own way.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi described the General Budget as highly defocused and the worst ever witnessed in his Parliamentary career so far.

“The budget neither addresses inclusive growth, nor refers to employment, nor talks of health and agriculture,” said M.M.Joshi, senior BJP leader.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) criticised the Congress-led UPA Govt. for doing precious little for the common man and only catering to certain sections of the country.

“The UPA Government, the Congress party, went into this whole budget exercise with the slogan of inclusive growth. But as far as we can make out, from what the budget figure shows where is the inclusive growth for ‘Aam Aadmi’, the allocation for social sector, is so pathetic. For example, the unorganised sector workers, what are they given? Hundred crore rupees increase in the Budget, as far as unorganised sector workers are concerned, for Right to Education. What have they given, practically, no money at all. So is there going to be another budget? Is there going to be special allocation for right to education? We don’t know,” Brinda Karat, senior CPI (M) leader.

Senior Janata Dal (U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar criticised the budget and called the “inclusive growth” claims of the Finance Minister as hollow.

“The General Budget presented by honourable Finance Minister is very disappointing and the claim made by him that he wants an inclusive growth in the country is a hollow claim,” said Nitish Kumar, Bihar Chief Minister.

However, External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna lauded fellow congressman and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on presenting a Budget that meets the aspirations and promises made by the Congress party during recent parliamentary elections.

“It has been a fairly good budget under most difficult circumstances that we are facing. There is a global recession and India itself cannot escape from the impact of the global realities and more particularly the global economic realities. The Finance Minister has done an excellent job in trying to meet substantially the aspirations and the promises the Congress party has made in the last elections,” said Krishna.

While presenting the budget in the Parliament, Pranab Mukherjee had said that first challenge is to return the GDP growth rate of 9 percent per annum at the earliest. The second challenge is to deepen and broaden the agenda for inclusive development. (ANI)

Communist Party to decide future course of action after election results

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will decide its future course of action regarding formation of a government after election results are out on May 16.

Leaders of CPI (M) and its other allies are to meet after the election results are out.

“As far as CPM is concerned, our position, Left Front’s position and whatever parties who have adjustment with us, their position is absolutely clear. We will decide our future course of action,” said Brinda Karat, a senior leader, CPI (M).

The CPI (M) with the help of its allies is aiming to form a non- BJP and a non-Congress government

“AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa is coming here on May 18. We hope she will be with us. Because she fought elections on basis of non-BJP and non-Congress alliance,” said MK Pandeir, leader of CPI (M),

The CPI (M) was an ally of Congress-led government for more than four years before it decided to part ways due to signing of a civilian nuclear deal with US last year.

The Congress Party has already indicated it is willing to take support of like-minded parties. (ANI)

Communist party demands action after its MLA attacked by Trinamool Congress

Kolkata, May 11 (ANI): The Communist Party has slammed the Trinamool Congress of West Bengal for allegedly attacking a woman legislator during an election meeting.

Chandana Ghoshdastidar, a legislator of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was seriously injured when alleged supporters of the Trinamool Congress, attacked her at Falta, 30 km from Kolkata during an election meeting.

Communist Party workers said that some party activists were also injured.

Brinda Karat, senior CPI (M) leader who came to visit Ghoshdastidar in the hospital, condemned the attack.

“We have demanded the government and the police to act immediately. What is the Trinamool Congress? What kind of culture do they want bring into West Bengal that an elected woman MLA should become a target like this? The administration and the police will take action,” Karat said.

Meanwhile, Pranab Mukherjee, a senior leader of the Congress, which is in pre-poll alliance with the Trinamool Congress, rapped the Communists for dreaming to form a government at the Centre. He said it would take them another 250 years to realize their dream.

“In 1952, the CPI (M) got 15 seats and that after increasing reached 60 in 2004. Now you can calculate how long they will take to reach 272. After that they should think to form a government. After another 250 years, they should think of that,” Mukherjee said.

The Congress has tied up with the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The Communists are expected to face a tough fight after they angered many of its traditional rural voters over a land acquisition drive for industry. (ANI)

Michael Jackson auction opens for viewing

Los Angeles – The contents of former pop idol Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch went on public viewing Tuesday ahead of an auction next week that is being challenged by the controversial singer’s lawyers. Among the approximately 1,390 items on display at a former Beverly Hills department store were the wrought iron gates of Neverland Ranch, the crystal-covered glove worn by Jackson in the video for Billie Jean, numerous musical awards, a letter from former president Ronald Reagan, heaps of ornate furniture, dozens of statues and a massive collection of toys, games and pinball machines.

Organizers of the sale at Julien’s Auctions estimate that it could raise between 10 million and 20 million dollars, and take a sizable chunk out of Jackson’s estimated 24-million-dollar debt. Jackson also recently signed on to perform a 50-concert run in London in a bid to raise cash and solve his financial problems.

Jackson’s legal representatives are trying to stop the sale claiming that the singer was never given a chance to sort out his personal effects. Their initial motion was denied, but another court hearing is set for Wednesday.

Jackson lived in Neverland for more than 10 years before leaving it in the aftermath of the child molestation case in 2005, in which he was acquitted of charges that he sexually abused a young visitor at the ranch. Auctioneers spent three months emptying the massive estate and have split the eclectic collection into three main categories: stage wear and music memorabilia, toys and Disney memorablia, and furniture and decorative arts.

“Neverland represents Michael Jackson’s Xanadu,” said auction director Martin Nolan. “There’s something for everyone, from paintings to porcelain to bicycles.”

Also on offer are numerous portraits of Jackson is his favourite royal poses, a tour bus, bumper cars and all-terrain vehicles. There are life-size statues of ET and Darth Vader, endless Peter Pan paraphernalia, and dozens of figures of butlers, maids and children that were scattered around the house and its grounds. There’s also a Rolls Royce limousine with 24-karat gold trim and numerous jackets Jackson wore on stage and in television appearances.

Online bidding has already started at juliensauctions. com, and the live auction from April 22 to 25 will determine the winners.(dpa)

CPI-M fumes at Congress’ West Bengal report card, Pranab

Kolkata/New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) A day after senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee released a report card on the Left’s three decades of ‘misrule’ in West Bengal, the Marxists refuted the findings and, launching an attack on Mukherjee, wondered at his ‘doublespeak’.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Biman Bose, speaking in Kolkata, expressed surprise over the ‘development report card’ released by Mukherjee, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress president.

‘He is an experienced politician and a professor. I don’t know how he could give all wrong information about West Bengal,’ Bose, the state Left Front chairman, said at a press conference here.

Citing a number of newspaper reports, he said: ‘I could not correlate the information Mukherjee provided Sunday and the statements he had delivered during various programmes with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee just a month ago.’

‘I am sure somebody must have given him the false figures and asked him to read that out in front of the media as per the party’s instruction.’

Asked if Mukherjee was playing a ‘dual role’ before the coming Lok Sabha polls, Bose declined to comment.

‘I just can’t say he’s playing a dual role. But he should not deliver such wrong information without cross-checking it properly,’ he said, adding that none of the figures provided by Mukherjee was correct.

The report titled ’30 years of Left Front rule in West Bengal: A development report card’ alleges that the CPI-M-led government failed to provide proper healthcare and education or generate employment in the state.

In New Delhi, CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat expressed the communists’ ire over the report and at Mukherjee.

‘Pranab Mukherjee appreciated the West Bengal government on Feb 2 and March 2 for undertaking development programmes. This shows his doublespeak. He now has to answer why this double standard in just one month,’ she said.

Refuting the findings, Brinda Karat said: ‘The Congress document shows that the West Bengal government has been doing well enough on the indices of poverty, hunger and malnutrition and education. Selective statistics should not be looked and used for political motives.’

Taking on the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), she said: ‘What is the report card of the UPA? Did they tell the people that Maharashtra has the highest number of farmer suicides. The Congress party has entirely ignored the agriculture factor and plight of farmers.’

Brinda Karat also criticised the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for writing off the Third Front.

‘Both Congress and BJP have tried to scuttle the Third Front, but it finds regular mention by them. This shows their desperation for power. Their efforts of ensuring a two-party system has failed,’ she added.

Referring to the BJP fielding Jaswant Singh from Darjeeling and the party aligning with the Gorka Janamukti Morcha (GJM) for the polls, Brinda Karat said: ‘The BJP has fielded senior leader Jaswant Singh from Darjeeling constituency on the shoulders of an outfit which is out to divide Bengal on the basis of ethnic and linguistic identity.’

She also released the CPI-M’s audio CD for the poll campaign called ‘Aaina’.

Chennaiites race to the Malaysian Grand Prix

CHENNAI: Narasimhan Subramanian has formulated the perfect plan. After his flight from Chennai lands at the Kuala Lampur International Airport,
he’s going to quickly freshen up at the airport and then head to his dream destination the Sepang International Circuit, home to the Malaysian Grand Prix 2009. Similarly, many Chennaiites are making the trip across the ocean to watch Kimi Raikonen and Lewis Hamilton, amongst others, bust it out on the race track. “When the first Formula 1 Grand Prix was inaugurated in Malaysia in 1999, I knew my wish to watch the event LIVE would become a reality,” says Subramanian, who heads an advertising agency in the city.

For many of these avid F1 fans, this is not the first time that they are travelling across the globe to watching a Grand Prix live. Samtani, managing director of Stereo Vision, has attended eight Grand Prix, four of which were in Malaysia. “I’ve been to six races all over the world in Malaysia, UK, Singapore and Germany,” says Leela Krishnan, former rally racer and Formula 3 champion in 1992. He is also the technical director (cars) for the Bangalore-based Red Rooster Racing team which will be taking part in the Formula BMW Pacific Series also held with the Grand Prix. Rohan Karat, an IT professional, will be watching an F1 race for the second time. “My first one was in Singapore last year and it was brilliant. I knew I had to come back,” he says.

Recent reports have stated that most of the racers aren’t very happy with the Malaysian track, since it is too hot. Subramanian says one can’t complain about the weather, especially in a tropical country like Malaysia. “I agree it can get extremely hot, but at the end of the day, this track is one of the best it has long stretches, nice curves and is perfect for Formula 1,” he adds.

Rajan Syal, CEO of Federation of Motor Sports Club of India is not attending the event this year, but adds that the Malaysian track is spectator-friendly. However, he thinks the event has come at the wrong time for Indians. “It is exam time for the children and the end of the financial year,” he adds. Samtani feels that things can get stifling on the track. “If we think it’s hot as a spectator, it’ll be worse for the driver. Temperatures are supposed to go over 55 degrees,” he says.

Ferrari seems to be these race fans’ favourite and most of them are looking forward to watching BMWs, McLarens and Ferraris zoom around the track. “The sound of an F1 car is akin to a jet engine. On TV, it all looks so easy, it doesn’t capture the excitement of seeing it at the venue,” says Subramanian. Karat adds that the smell of rubber and the vroom’ of the cars complete the ambience. However, Krishnan prefers catching the action on TV. “The noise and all the hype is exciting at first, but I prefer watching it on TV. Sitting at the track gives you only a view of what’s in front of you,” he says. Samtani adds that purists should watch it on TV. “But if you want to have fun with other petrol-heads this is the best event to watch together,” he says.

This is what the Oscar is made of

Washington, Feb 23 (ANI): If you’ve ever wondered what the prestigious Oscar statuette is made of, then a new research by scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS), will help you answer that question.

According to the research, the Oscar statuette, which stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs 8.5 pounds, is made from the alloy Britannium, which consists of tin (93 percent), antimony (5 percent), and copper (2 percent).

The statuette is then plated in 24-karat gold.

This combination of materials has been the norm for a while, although it wasn’t always the case.

For example, during World War II, when materials and metals were scarce, the Oscars were made of plaster.

After the war, the plaster statues were then turned in for the normal gold-plated versions. (ANI)

Political parties give mixed reactions to Interim Budget

New Delhi, Feb 16 (ANI): The political parties on Monday gave mixed reactions to the Interim Budget 2009-10, as proposed by acting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Union Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said, “The economy will kick-start with the whatever expenditure it has and once this money reaches the people they will spend it and once they spend it money will start flowing in the market and with that the economy will improve and that is the idea of this interim budget.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, blamed the Central Government for ‘doling out lollypops’ and said the budget was silent on the concerns of common man, which was the poll plank of the Congress party.

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said, “Today common man is facing inflation, unemployment and farmer-suicide, but none of these issues came up in the budget speech. This government is going to seek a fresh mandate and when the common man would ask the government as to what they have done for them and their answer would be in negative then their dream of coming to power again will be shattered.”

Communist parties, who were allies of the ruling coalition before withdrawing support last year, also criticized the budget.

Communist Party leader Gurudas Dasgupta said, “Our strongest criticism is that the greatest problem of the country has not been referred to in the budget at all. Not a single sentence has been said about the job loss and the retrenchment. Two million people have lost their jobs in last three months. Finance ministry of this country and a prominent politician representing the Congress party does not recognize the first human problem, that is, job loss.”

Communist party of India (Marxist) said the Congress party presented its election manifesto, which is far away from the reality.

Senior CPI (M) leader Bindra Karat said, “The Congress party wants to feed the rats in the country? People’s kitchens are empty because they have cut 73 percent allocation for APL (off take of subsidized grains people above property line) for the states. So what are these claims? It is an election manifesto and that also very far removed from the actual reality.”

Former Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) C. Rangarajan said some more relief could have been given in the budget.

“They are going to be able to maintain employment level only by enhancing the growth but there are specific sectors where I said some relief could have been made,” Rangarajan said. (ANI)

CPI (M) urges Central Government to intervene in Sri Lanka issue

Coimbatore, Jan 12 (ANI): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has urged the Central Government to intervene in the Sri Lankan issue to protect the Tamil people in that island nation.

This was disclosed by Brinda Karat, politburo member of CPI (M) while ddressing news conference here on Sunday.

She reiterated the party’s stand that New Delhi should hold talks witholombo.

“We have been urging the government of India to take all necessary steps to protect the security in the interest of Tamil people. We have been urging them to intervene with the Sri Lankan Government to protect the Tamil people. However, we would not like our concern for the interest of the Tamil people to be misused or utilized by anybody or any forces who in any ay support the terrorist activities of LTTE in Sri Lanka,” said Karat.

“We also strongly support the political demand for autonomy of the entire region where the Tamil people reside in Sri Lanka. We believe a political solution based on the autonomy of that region must be found within the framework of United Sri Lanka,” added Karat.

Sri Lankan troops fought toward the shrinking strongholds of the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels on Sunday, the military said, seeking a crushing battlefield victory to end one of Asia’s longest insurgent ground wars.

The military said it had killed at least 24 rebels after a series of confrontations on Saturday in the small northeastern wedge of jungle, which is all that is left of the Tigers’ self-proclaimed state.

Soldiers seized Kilinochchi, which the rebels had dubbed their capital, on January 2 and a week later ran the LTTE out of Elephant Pass, which had been in rebel hands since 2000.

Both major victories have cleared the way for soldiers to converge on the port of Mullaittivu with the aim of ending the 25-year ground war. (ANI)
