Ludhiana hosts seminar on Sufism

Ludhiana, Sep 19(ANI): Ludhiana recently played host to a national seminar on Sufism. This time, the theme was the influence of Sufism on modern times.

The Sahitaya Academy of New Delhi and the Punjab Sahitaya Academy organized the seminar.

The seminar also focused on the ‘pain of separation from God’ and intellectuals, poets and Sufi singers.

“Sufism says that God, whom a man looks for all over, is within him. And once he realizes this fact, he will be free of his ego and will find happiness,” said Vaasthe Mohi, a Sindhi poet from Ahmedabad.

While, Gulshan Majith, a poet from Jammu and Kashmir, said: “When God is everything, so what is the importance of religion and caste discrimination, this is the message of Sufism. Shaivaism, Buddhism and Sufism give same message to the world and consider this world as the manifestation of that supreme power and do not make a distinction with the other. There are no boundaries. Everybody in this world is equal for God.”

The participants also put forth the argument that many Punjabi poets make use of themes from popular Punjabi culture. r. Chandraprakash Deval, a poet from Rajasthan, said Sufism is the paramount method to fight terrorism.

“Sufism is the best way to fight terrorism. If the minds of people can be changed, they will start respecting other religions, humanity and the feeling of brotherhood and secularism will increase, terrorism will be finished then. So to fight terrorism it is important to popularize the way shown by Sufism, adopt and follow that way and spread the feeling of brotherhood,” Deval said.

Sufi singer Balbir Kaur, who also teaches singing at Guru Nanak College in Ludhiana, held the audience spellbound and she also highlighted that school students must be made aware of the great cultural heritage, traditional folk art and literature of the Sufi saints, to promote Punjabi language.

Associating Sufism with any one religion is against its very basic tenets. Underlining this basic fact, renowned Sufi singers Idrim Khan and Skakur Khan from Rajasthan sung the verses of Bulle Shah, Guru Nanak, Kabir and Sajjan Shah. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ all set to woo audience

Mumbai, Sep 9 (ANI): Bollywood’s latest romantic drama featuring some of the top actors is all set to woo the audiences with its originality.

Directed by, Prem Soni, ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’, is an unusual story of passion, love and an extra-marital affair.

The film starring Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan and Sohail Khan is a simple ordinary story set in a contemporary fashion.

Targeted at the youth, the film also deals with the issues surrounding career over love which is one of the main reasons for an unstable marriage in today’s time.

“It is an original film with original storyline. Coming from close people of mine, family friends. So it’s sketched from there. So its completely original, no similarity whatsoever,” said Prem Soni, director.

The film revolves around the lives of Samir Khanna, played by Salman Khan and Raina, played by Kareena Kapoor, who have a fairy tale marriage.

Samir gets his dream job and the couple have a great life until one mistake ruins it all.

According to Kareena, the film has been made from the point of view of the woman and is a journey of a girl’s life.

“For me, I think the girl’s role was very strong. She is the protagonist of the film. Whatever story is told in the film is from her point of view. So it’s a journey of a girl’s life and after marriage, after she gets married to Samir, how she makes a friend and what happens. For me it was a contemporary idea and an interesting role for me,” said Kareena.

The film is set to be released at Diwali. (ANI)

55th National Awards announced: Gandhi, My Father wins two

New Delhi, Sep.7 (ANI): The Anil Kapoor produced film ‘Gandhi, My Father’ has won two National Awards while the Shahrukh-starrer ‘Om Shanti Om’ has won in the Best Art Direction category, and Shahid Kapur-starrer ‘Jab We Met’ won the award in Best Choreography category in the 55th National Awards that were announced on Monday.

Gandhi, My Father was pitted against commercial successes like Taare Zameen Par and Chak De.

Feroz Abbas Khan, the director of the Gandhi, My Father won the National Award for Best Screenplay and Darshan Zariwala bagged theaward for the Best Supporting actor for portraying Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation who strives hard to have a normal relationship with his son in the film.

Meanwhile, actor Prakash Raj has won the Best Actor award in the 55th National Awards for his sterling performance as a silk weaver in Priyadarshan’s Tamil film Kanchivaram, which has been adjudged as the Best Film of 2007.

Actor Umashree has won the Best Actress award for her performance for her lead role ‘Gulabi’ in Girish Kasaravalli’s Kannada film “Gulabi Talkies”.

The Gulabi Talkies, which was made in the coastal dialect of Kannada is based on the communal tension in Karnataka.

The best child actor award has gone to Sharad Goyekar for his role in the Marathi film “Tingya”.

Darshan Zariwala has got the best supporting actor award for his role in Feroz Abbas Khan’s film “Gandhi My Father”.

There is also a special jury award for this film, which explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi.

“Chak De” has got the award in the wholesome entertainment category and “Taare Zameen Par” in the family welfare category.

Playback singer Shankar Mahadevan has won the award for the song “Meri Maa” from the film “Taare Zameen Par”.

The jury members for the National Awards headed by Sai Paranjpe included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. About 102 films and 106 non-feature films were considered.

The list had been finalized last week but because of the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YSR Reddy, the announcement was postponed. (ANI)

Indo-Pak foreign secretary talks not on the cards

New Delhi, Sep.4 (ANI): Talks between the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan-Nirupama Rao and Salman Bashir-are not going to be held in the forseeable future in the wake of the latest statements emerging from Islamabad with regard to the 26/11 probe and its less than acceptable reactions to the six dossiers provided to it by the Indian Government.

According to sources, while the meeting between the Indian External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly later this month, any hopes of a limited dialogue taking place at lesser levels is remote.

Incessant ceasefire violations at the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan’s consistent non-compliance to the six dossiers provided by India and the inaction against 26/11 mastermind Hafeez Saeed are proving to be a recipe for a new face off between the two neighbours.

Dismayed by Pakistan’s double speak and its refusal to accept the evidence provided by India in the sixth dossier, sources said “It is up to Pakistan to decide what relation they want with India”.

Hafeez Saeed and his organization are banned under UN resolution 1267 and he should be brought to books, the sources added.

Interpol has already issued Red corner notices against Hafeez Saeed and Lakhvi, the key suspects who masterminded the Mumbai terror attacks.

But Pakistan is still asking for concrete evidence from India.

The Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has already indicated that India may not respond to further demands from the Pakistan Government for information on the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.

The apparent bitterness between the two neighbours is evident from the fact that the meeting between the foreign secretaries of the two countries is not yet finalized.

Sources have told ANI that no dates are fixed for the meetings so far.

It was decided between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Yusuf Raza Gilani at Sharm-al-Sheikh last month that foreign secretaries of both countries should meet more often and it was also decided that Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao should meet her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir before the ministers of both countries meet in New York.

The Pakistan Foreign office has also reportedly invited the Indian Foreign Secretary for talks in Islamabad, but no decision has been taken regarding her visit as if now, sources have told ANI.

India is also alarmed by the recent US reports about Pakistan’s increasing nuclear capabilities. The Indian Army chief has also expressed apprehensions over the development and has said that Pakistan’s nuclear stockpile is going beyond nuclear deterrence. RSS to chart BJP’s final succession plan in October: Sources

New Delhi, Sep.1 (ANI): Marathon rounds of meetings between the RSS top brass with BJP leadership in New Delhi might have prepared a ground for leadership change. But real changeover in BJP is likely to take place only after RSS national executive meet in October.

According to highly placed sources ” RSS is expected to chart a final blueprint for BJP succession plan in its three day National Executive which is slated to take place in Rajgir Bihar from 9-11th October.

Although publicly RSS claims that BJP is going to decide its own future course of action as per the leadership issue is concerned and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had reportedly asked Leader of Opposition Advani to decide on his successor. But top RSS sources insist that Sangh will take final call on BJP leadership only after the October’s National Executive.

All eyes within BJP and outside will be on two key positions on which the decision is to be taken in the crucial RSS meet. BJP’s president Rajnath Singh tenure is ending in November and BJP -RSS combine has to appoint the new president. BJP has made it clear that Rajnath will not get second term as President because according to the constitution same person cannot be repeat the term as a president and party is not looking in a mood to amend the constitution.

According to sources while RSS is trying to rope in a fresh face like Bal Apte or Narendar Modi for the prestigious position, Advani camp isreportedly pitching for Arun Jaitley, Ananth kumar and Venkaiah Naidu .imilarly ambiguity continues over who will take the baton from Lal Krishan Advani as the leader of opposition. While speculations are rife that Sushma Swaraj is the first choice for the post. No leadership role likely for ‘lateral entrants’ in BJP

New Delhi, Aug.31 (ANI): ‘Lateral entrants’, a term coined for non-RSS workers, are in for tough days ahead in the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In the wake of recent wrangling in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) followed by the exit of senior leader Jaswant Singh and L.K. Advani’s aide Sudheendra Kulkarni, the party has decided to clip the feathers of ‘lateral’ entrants. It literally implies that the members, who are non-swayamsewaks, will no more be able to enjoy the power and clout they used to till recent past.

A senior leader, seeking anonymity, said, ” BJP has decided that the next BJP President will be a swayamsewak and will not be a ‘ lateral entry’. This will further strengthen the chances of hardcore RSS workers-Arun Jaitley, Bal Apte and Narendra Modi-being appointed as the new bosses of the organisation and put to rest speculations about Sushma Swaraj becoming the new President of the party after Rajnath Singh’s three-year term comes to its end by the end of this year.

According to a top BJP source, the cadres of the party are deeply pained by the recent statements made by Jaswant Singh and Advani’s aide Sudheendra Kulkarni who left the party citing that he has fundamental differences with BJP’s ideology.

Party believes that cadres across the country are deeply anguished by the conduct of ‘lateral’ entrants who enjoyed enormous power and were aspirants of holding top jobs if party had won. But they defected after the party lost in the elections.

According to sources, although party will downsize the clout of non-swayamsewaks in party affairs, it will not bar their entry into the party.

Source told ANI that BJP would welcome lateral entrants into the party in future on the basis of their professional ability and capacity.

It is learnt that RSS chief in his recent meetings with the BJP leadership had suggested that they should trim the role of lateral entrants in the BJP and promote swayamsewaks in the party.

Taking a dig at the so called intellectuals, who form the major chunk of ‘lateral entrants’ in the party, top source also said: “We have competent cadres who can speak good English and also write a book.”

Admitting that the generational change in the party is imminent, party sources also indicated that Advani will continue to guide the party with his experience and moral authority even after he steps down as the leader of Opposition. By Naveen Kapoor(ANI)

Salman Khan puts off US trip fearing detention by immigration officials

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Bollywood star Salman Khan who is scheduled to go to USA early next month reportedly cancelled his visit on Friday.

According to sources Khan decision comes in the wake of the humiliation faced by Sharukh Khan at New Jersey Airport.

Khan is scheduled to partake in a promotional event of his upcoming movie ” Wanted” besides participating in an auction of his personal paintings to raise funds for charity.

Khan’s decision was also propelled by the hard time being given by the US Consulate in Mumbai in approving the visa of his associates, including one of his family members, whom Salman wanted to bring along with on the promotional trip, sources said.

Besides Khan, producer Boney Kapoor, Bollywood star Sridevi and Prabhu Deva were also scheduled to attend the promotional event.

Following the Shahrukh Khan episode, which attracted a lot of media publicity both in India and the US, there is a sense of reluctance among local promoters and organisers of Bollywood events to risk inviting stars, sources added.

Khan’s decision has put a bug question mark before the promoters and also local organisers in cities like Chicago, Houston and Dallas who have invested a lot of effort and money in organising these events. (ANI)

Bollywood stars celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi

Mumbai, Aug 24 (ANI): Bollywood stars commenced the celebration of the ten-day-long Ganesha Chaturthi festival here.

Actor Jeetendra celebrated the festival with his daughter Ekta Kapoor.

“For the last 32 years, that was when my daughter Ekta Kapoor was born, I brought Ganapati to my house for the first time and since then we have been praying in front of the Ganapati idol,” said Jeetendra.

“I wish everyone happy Ganesha Chaturthi and would advise everyone to look after oneself because one is precious for one’s family and one’s country,” said Nana Patekar.ctor Govinda also celebrated the festival with his family.

Ganapati festival is a ten-day long event at the end of which the idol of Lord Ganesha is taken in a grand processions and immersed in water bodies such as rivers, tanks, ponds and wells. In Mumbai the idol is immersed in the sea.

Lord Ganesha, is one of the most revered Gods of Hindus, and is worshipped at the beginning of every auspicious occasion.

Ganesha, as the God of knowledge is described as “Vinayaka”and as remover of obstacles he is called “Vighanharta”. He is worshipped at the beginning of every auspicious occasion for blessings of luck and success. (ANI)

Oriya dance group emerges winner in TV reality show

Mumbai, Aug 23(ANI): The Prince Dance Group from Orissa won the grand finale of a TV reality show “India’s Got Talent” that was staged in Mumbai on Saturday night.

The group won a cash prize of Rs five million and a Maruti Suzuki Ritz car.

The group, comprising 26 artistes held the audience and the judges engrossed with their act from the mythological Mahabharata.

“I always had faith on these children. They are very hard working. I wanted to make a group by teaching these kids but I cant believe that we could reach at this level. We are here today all because of God’s grace and our hard work,” said Krishna, lead dancer of the group.

While, renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, actors Sonali Bendre and Kirron Kher judged the show, Bollywood stars Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee, also made their presence felt on the occasion and promoted their forthcoming movie ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’.

“Whenever you come and watch such unique performances, you actually get a lot to learn and take back something new. Be it their art or their story it definitely touches you. So we actually took back,” said Sonali Bendre. (ANI)

RSS irked by Jaswant’s mention of India being a country of many nationalities

New Delhi, Aug.21 (ANI): It is learnt that the Sangh leadership has revisited Jaswant Singh’s controversial book — Jinnah – India, Partition, Independenc-and has raised severe objections to many of its contents other than the eulogizing of Jinnah and the denigration of India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

“The RSS is badly irked by mention of India being a country of many nationalities,” sources said.

The RSS believes that such talk is in itself contradictory to the BJP’s famous slogan of “One Country, One Constitution”, which the party has often used in the context of removing the special status allocated to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The RSS also believes that Jaswant’s argument of India being a country of many nationalities is similar to the ideology of the Left parties.

The RSS has also trashed Singh’s contention that Sardar Patel banned the Sangh, and therefore, he had done no harm to the core ideology of the BJP by writing against the iron man.

RSS sources told ANI that the RSS has deep respect for Patel despite the fact that he banned the outfit.

They further elaborated that Patel had banned the RSS on the orders of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by Nathu Ram Godse.

Prior to implementing the order, Patel had written a letter to Nehru appreciating the social service rendered by the RSS when the partition of the subcontinet was at its peak. Patel also wrote to Veer Savarkar about the good work done by the Swayamsevaks.

In fact, Patel gave a clean chit to RSS within a month of Gandhi’s assassination, and is said to have told Nehru that the RSS was not involved in the killing.

The RSS was banned on February 4, 1948 four days after the killing of Mahatma Gandhi. The ban was only lifted in July 1949. The right wing outfit was later banned during the emergency (1975) and after the demolition of the Babri Mosque (December 1992).

Earlier in the day, Advani also toed the RSS line in saying that Patel had banned the RSS under pressure from Nehru.

Actors, crew of ‘Yeh Mera India’ get candid with media

Mumbai, Aug 21 (ANI): Cast and crew of Bollywood film ‘Yeh Mera India’ that brings to light several problems of the Indian society, got candid with media in Mumbai.

All the leading star cast, including Anupam Kher , Rajpal Yadav, Smilee Suri, Perizaad Zorabian, along with the Produce -Director of the film, N Chandra were present.

Speaking to the media on the occasion, Chandra said the film highlighted a subject, which he felt was quite important.

“I felt that no film is made on this topic and this needs to be talked about,” said N Chandra.

The movie also stars Atul Kulkarni, Seema Biswas, Milind Gunaji, Rajit Kapoor, and Sarika among others.

Perizaad Zorabian also talked about her role in the movie.

“It is very interesting story. There are many interesting characters in the film. Beauty of the film is that it will make you think and it will make you wonder, that you can make a difference and there are so many stories that are involved in the film. I am playing the role of a television executive producer and my character is that of educated , successful person who has everything in life but she still she complains about everything,” said Zorabian.

The film brings back the old memories of N Chandra films like ‘Tezab’, ‘Ankush’, ‘Kagaar’, ‘Tejaswini’, ‘Narsimha’ and ‘Pratighaat’.

The film is based on social elements that concern our daily life and problems of our society encounters such as caste, Hindu-Muslim issues and sexual harassment of the women at the work places.

Mumbai, Aug 20 (ANI): India’s first Olympics gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, Bollywood actors Shahid Kapoor and Katrina Kaif and other young achievers were felicitated with prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Award here on Wednesday.

A host of glitterati attended the function.

Shahid Kapur who recently starred with Priyanka Chopra in the film Kaminey said he felt honoured after receiving this award.

“I’m feeling very happy and it’s a very prestigious award. Rajiv Gandhi always supported the youth and he always used to talk about youth empowerment and the award which is kept in his honour I’m getting it,” said Kapur.

Katrina Kaif also expressed similar sentiments.

“It’s really very nice when you get acknowledged for your world and also your generally its not for one film or one particular thing you’ve done so its really nice,” said Kaif.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan prays for success of upcoming film

Mumbai, Aug 19 (ANI): Bollywood actor Salman Khan is keeping his finger crossed for success of upcoming film ‘Wanted’.

Produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Prabhu Deva, the film features Ayesha Takia Azmi opposite Salman Khan apart from actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant.

“I have done lot of love stories, lot of comedies, many of them were not appreciated enough. In this film, I had the zest to work hard. I have done that. So, let’s see if it works and if it doesn’t,” he said.

The film is about Radhe, played by Salman Khan, who is a hardcore gangster, a sharpshooter and works for a dreaded Mafia.

He then finds love when the young and pretty Jhanvi, played by Ayesha Takia Azmi, professes her love for him.

Khan said the film is a combination of all the ingredients in good quantity and they all had to undergo good deal of training for it.

“Our films are usually a combination of all things in small proportions. Little bit dance, little bit romance and little bit comedy. But this film has everything in huge proportions, so had to train hard,” said Khan.

Khan has lent his voice to the title track of the film, composed by composer duo Sajid-Wajid.

He had last sung for the film, Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya in 1998. (ANI)

If reconciled, Taliban militants could turn on India: Nicholas Burns

New Delhi, Aug.18 (ANI): Expressing reservations over the idea of opening up communication channels with certain sections of Taliban, the former United States Deputy Secretary of State, Nicholas Burns, on Tuesday said that the US should resolve the problem keeping in view the regional context.

“Reconciling with Taliban is very complex and there is a risk that after the talks these militants could turn on India. We (US) should go ahead to look at the problem in the regional context,” said Nicholas Burns in the capital.

Burns, who retired from the U.S. foreign office a year-and-a-half ago, on Tuesday was here in Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) where he addressed ex-diplomats and strategists.

U S has been suffering major setbacks in combating Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan and under its new AfPak policy, it is planning to hold talks with what it calls “Good Taliban” and would carry on its offensive against the ‘Bad Taliban’.

New Delhi is however skeptical about any reconciliation with militants and does not believe in the “Good Taliban theory”.

Burns further stressed that the U.S should deal with India and Pakistan singularly and there should be no ‘hyphenation’.

“The US should have independent relationship with Pakistan and India,” he added.

Calling India’s role in Afghanistan as “positive and constructive”, Burns said that Pakistan equipped with nuclear bombs and high instability is creating worries like no other country.

Burns said: “India could play an instrumental role in bringing Iran onboard as a nuclear Iran is not in the interest of India.”

On the issue of Mumbai terror attack on 26/11 last year, Burns said: “Mumbai attack had evoked lot of sympathy in the United States and we should use this to motivate the two countries in countering terrorism not only in south Asia but other parts of the world as well.”

China cites technical hitches for not supporting ban on Jaish.

New Delhi, Aug.13 (ANI): China continues to remain reluctant about supporting India’s proposal at the United Nations to place sanctions on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

ANI has learnt that in the recent meeting between the Special Representatives of the two countries led by National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo, the Chinese Representative cited “technical” reasons for not supporting the ban on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

China is the only country in the Security Council which is blocking sanctions on the Jaish and its chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

New Delhi’s argument has been that Azhar benefited from a terror act – the hijacking of IC 814 – and, therefore, there can be no objections on the grounds of evidence.

According to sources, during the 13th round of Special Representatives talks in New Delhi, India handed over more details and documents about Azhar which establish that he is a terrorist.

Beijing’s response, however, was tepid.

India has already submitted detailed documents on the Jaish-e-Mohammad’s terrorist activities to the United Nations, which in turn has been circulated to other nations, including China.

Beijing, however, has been denial mode about receiving the document.

The Maulana Masood Azhar led Jaish-e-Mohammed is a Pakistan based terrorist organization which has orchestrated series of attacks against India.

Once sanctions on an individual or the origination are imposed under UN resolution 1267 which is also known as Al qaeeda and Taliban sanctions, it empowers India to demand action from Pakistan.

After being released from the Indian jail, Masood has been seen in various Pakistani cities addressing huge congregations and is reportedly living undercover within the patronage of the ISI.

Security experts believe that Pakistan is using its close tactical and strategic relations with China to block India’s attempts in the UNSC to ban the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Earlier, the United Kingdom had shown reluctance to support the ban on the Jaish, but once India submitted details about the group, it agreed to come onboard and support the ban. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

Pre-historic cave discovered in Madhya Pradesh

Raisen (Madhya Pradesh), July 16 (ANI): A cave, which is of great archaeological interest and could hold immense tourism potential, has been discovered at Patni village of Raisen district in Madhya Pradesh.

The one-mile long cave known as Mrigendranath cave sits underneath the green and partially rocky hill of Patni village. Locals had known it for long as a religious site where Hindu sages and ascetics used to come for meditation.

However, it has recently been acknowledged as an important archaeological site, prompting the state Culture and Public Relations Minister, Laxmikant Sharma, to visit the cave along with officials of archaeological department.

After walking 100 metres down into the cave, it becomes so narrow that only one person can walk at a time literally clinging along the wall. As one moves deeper in the cave it feels as if one is walking in a pitch-dark, narrow and air-conditioned tunnel.

However the cave becomes wider in the middle and there is enough room to seat a large number of people there. This wide space in the middle of the cave has been a favourite place for Hindu sages to mediate and perform rituals in front of the dhooni (holy fire). There are some paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses on the wall and some rocks resembling animal figures.

After visiting the cave, Sharma said he would do his best to develop it as a tourism spot and facilitate basic infrastructure at the site.

” We will do everything possible for the development of the hill and the cave from the point of archaeology. However, it has a great potential of tourism. World tourism will be attracted to this. This place should be developed from the tourism point of view, the entrance of the cave should be more open and convenient and the place should be more reachable and there should be basic facilities installed at the place,” he added.

Kapoor Singh, a villager who is the most frequent visitor of the cave, even after coming here on and off for over two decades had admits that he still hasn’t explored the cave fully and doesn’t know where it ends or leads to.

“I know the cave since 1984-85. Many sages used to come here to this cave. I stayed with them. Basically they discovered this and there are many images of Hindu gods and goddesses in the cave,” he said.

Experts are working to ascertain the period the cave belonged to even though a large circle of archaeologists link it to the prehistoric period.

According to some experts the cave could be deemed a world heritage site like the Bhimbetka cave, which is only 80 kilometres away from it.

It will be studied whether there was any link between the two caves or the people who used them. Both the caves are in Raisen district.

“It seems, primitive man used to live in large groups. In the other Bhimbetka cave primitive man lived in smaller groups. But after seeing this cave, it seems they lived here in a community,” said DK Mathur, Archaeological department official.

The newly-discovered cave is expected to boost tourism in the state which boasts of other sites of historical importance. By Ramchandra Sahu (ANI)

‘India can sustain 8 to 9 per cent growth rate’

On Board special flight, July 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said India should be able to sustain with little bit difficulty growth rate of 8 to 9 per cent notwithstanding difficulties on the international front.

Addressing a press conference onboard after attending the G8-G5 summit at L’Aquila in Italy, Dr. Singh said, “India’s saving is 35 per cent with normal capital output 4:1. I am confident that India will come out of this crisis stronger, but it will be a difficult road to travel.”

“Our exports have suffered, capital flows from abroad have declined, and international bank lending to the developing countries have declined. Therefore, challenge for us is to sustain and revive the growth which we have built up in last five years notwithstanding the deterioration,” he added.

The Prime Minister further said: “All available indicators of 2009 points to weakening of US and European economies and therefore one can say that the global environment for development of the countries of third world has undergone on sharp deterioration.”

Earlier, Dr. Singh expressed confidence that the country can achieve eight to nine per cent growth rate in the coming two to three years and the government will be working to achieve it.

The Prime Minister emphasized that though the fiscal deficit is high, there is a need to rapidly expand economy, create jobs and resources for spending on flagship programmes on education, health, rural development and scope for expansion in infrastructure development. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

PM says court’s verdict on Article 377 to be discussed with cabinet

On Board special flight, July 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said the matter related to the Delhi High Court’s ruling on gay sex legalization will be discussed with his cabinet colleagues to seek their views in this regard.

Addressing a press conference onboard after attending the G8-G5 Summit at L’Aquila in Italy, Dr. Singh said, “I haven’t discussed the matter with my cabinet colleagues. Therefore, when I will go back, I will seek their views as to which anything further needs to be done or said in this regard.”

In a landmark verdict on July 2, the Delhi High Court legalized the homosexual behavior of consensual youths, which received a lot of opposition from the religious leaders.

It was earlier a criminal offence under Section 377 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On July 9, a two-judge Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice K. G. Balkrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam issued notice to the Union Government to explain its stand on a petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s ruling.

The apex court posted the matter for hearing on July 20.

The Bench said that any interim order against the High Court verdict, if necessary, would be considered only after hearing the parties concerned.

The Bench also said they would hear the opinions of all the parties concerned before giving any interim order in this matter.

The apex court was hearing a plea filed by Suresh Kumar Kaushal, an astrologer. Notices were also issued to NAZ Foundation, and other respondents who were parties before the Delhi High Court. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

German Chancellor meets Manmohan Singh at G8-G5 summit

L’aquila, July 10 (ANI): German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh met on the sidelines of the G8-G5 summit here on Thursday.

They reportedly discussed bilateral issues and topics pertinent to the summit.

Leaders of the world’s richest nations and major developing powers would have on the table issues like global warming and international trade, with the poorer countries seeking concessions.

U S President Barack Obama would chair the climate discussions, but hopes of agreeing on ambitious emission-reducing goals have faded after China and India rejected demands to halve their emission of greenhouse gases by 2050.

The talks have been broadened to include the heads of new economic powerhouses in recognition that the world’s problems can no longer be dealt with by an elite few.

The fragile state of the global economy dominated the first day of the annual G-8 summit, with the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Russia acknowledging that were still significant risks to financial stability.

The 17-member Major Economies Forum (MEF), which groups the G-8 plus big developing nations, also looks set to embrace the two Celsius goal on Thursday, but is balking at making further commitments ahead of a decisive U.N. climate conference in December.

Progress has been hampered by the absence of Chinese President Hu Jintao, who withdrew from talks to attend to ethnic clashes in China’s northwest that have killed 156 people and wounded over a thousand.ndian negotiators said developing countries first wanted to see rich nation plans to provide financing to help them cope with ever more floods, heatwaves, storms and rising sea levels.

Broader economic concerns are also high on the agenda, with emerging nations complaining that they are suffering heavily from a crisis that was not of their making.

China, India and Brazil have all questioned whether the world should start seeking a new global reserve currency as an alternative to the dollar. They have said they may raise this on Thursday after having discussed it amongst themselves on July 8.

The debate is highly sensitive in financial markets, which are wary of risks to U.S. asset values, and the issue is unlikely to progress very far in L’Aquila.

However, a breakthrough on trade may be within reach. Diplomats say the G-8 and G-5 should agree to conclude the stalled Doha round of trade talks in 2010. Launched in 2001 to help poor countries prosper, they have stumbled on proposed tariff and subsidy cuts. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

Shimla, July 9 (ANI): A play based on a famous Indian novel, Devdas was recently staged at 122-year-old Gaiety theatre to pay tributes to some eminent theatre artistes and playwrights.

‘Devdas’ was performed by some promising theatre artistes to pay tributes to late theatre personalities like Habib Tanvir and Manohar Singh.

The director of the play, Abhimanyu felt that the play was perfect to pay tribute to the unforgettable theatre personalities.

“It is a proud moment for us to pay tribute to such personalities because they have given us a path on which we are supposed to walk among all the hurdles and in the end we will reach our destination where we can earn honour and dignity for ourselves. Even they earned it after much hard work and we salute them for that,” said Abhimanyu.

Residents were very happy to see young artists performing in Gaiety where actors like Prithvi Raj Kapoor, K.L Saigal, Pran, Prem Chopra, Anupam Kher, Shashi Kapoor, Jennifer Kendall and Naseeruddin Shan have given performances. Novelist Rudyard Kipling too has performed on the Gaiety stage.

“A tribute to the senior artistes that is what this play is all about. As you just said that the play has been performed on the stage for the first time after its reopening on June 25, I think it’s a great tribute to the artistes who have gone,” said Captain Dhiman, a resident.

Built by the British in 1889, in Victorian gothic style and said to be a copy of the Royal Albert hall in London, the theatre was closed for renovation and was reopened on June 25. By Hemant Chauhan(ANI)
