Madhya Pradesh CM meets Manmohan Singh on Maheshwar Dam issue

New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday and requested him to intervene on the Maheshwar Dam issue, which is facing objections from Ministry of Environment.

“We have appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene and help the people of Indore and Devas to get water and Madhya Pradesh in getting rid of power crisis,” said Chauhan after his meeting with Dr Singh.

“We have requested the Prime Minister and he has assured of resolving the issue after holding discussion,” he added.

Chauhan accused Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh of having an agenda to stall development projects in the state.

“We feel that Jairam Ramesh is working like the activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan. He is not seeing from a development perspective, people”s perspective, water and electricity point of view but is only concerned only of environmental issue, which is one sided,” said Chauhan.

The Union Environment Ministry has ordered suspension of work on the Maheshwar dam till the dislocated people are rehabilitated.

The Madhya Pradesh Government says that stoppage of the project at this juncture would result in the loss of 702,000 units of power per day starting in 2010.

Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh government had written a letter to the Prime Minister seeking intervention on the issue.
On February 17, the Union Environment Ministry had issued a show cause notice to the Shree Maheshwar Hydel Power Corporation Limited (SMHPCL) stating that there has been no satisfactory compliance with the conditions of environmental clearance.

The ministry also asked the SMHPCL to show cause as to why the clearance should not be revoked and directions for the closure of the Maheshwar project should not be issued.

The reply filed by SMHPCL in response to the show- cause notice confirmed that there was no rehabilitation plan with details of the agricultural land to be allotted to the oustees, and that the relief and rehabilitation measures are far lagging behind the construction of the dam.

On April 2, Jairam Ramesh acknowledged during a media conference in Bhopal that conditions of clearance in the Maheshwar Project have been violated and status of rehabilitation is appalling.

He also said that he is ready to suspend work on the dam until rehabilitation is completed. However the Ministry of Environment and Forests has not suspended the work till now.

The dam is said to be one of the largest being built on the River Narmada in Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh Government privatized the project in 1992, by handing it over to the S.Kumar Group. (ANI)

Arrests of Taliban leaders by Pak blocked ‘secret’ talks with Taliban: UN official

London, Mar.19 (ANI): A top United Nations (UN) official has blamed Pakistan of blocking reconciliation efforts with the Taliban by arresting several top extremist commanders.

Admitting that there were secret negotiations going on with the Afghan Taliban, former UN envoy to Afghanistan Kai Eide criticised Pakistan for the arrests of high-profile Taliban leaders, including the second-in command Mullah Ghani Baradar, which he said has ‘completely stopped a channel of secret communications with the UN.’

Eide said the UN was involved in face-to-face talks with the Taliban leaders to establish and stability in the region.

“The effect of [the arrests], in total, certainly, was negative on our possibilities to continue the political process that we saw as so necessary at that particular juncture. The Pakistanis did not play the role that they should have played…. They must have known who they were, what kind of role they were playing, and you see the result today,” BBC quoted Eide, as saying.

He said the secret deliberations were started a year ago and several rounds of talks were held until recently.

“The first contact was probably last spring, then of course you moved into the election process where there was a lull in activity, and then communication picked up when the election process was over, and it continued to pick up until a certain moment a few weeks ago,” Eide said.

When asked that whether the talks also involved the Taliban chief Mullah Omar, Eide said : “I find it unthinkable that such contact would take place without his knowledge and also without his acceptance.”

“We met senior figures in the Taliban leadership and we also met people who have the authority of the Quetta Shura to engage in that kind of discussion,” he added.

Eide’s revelation confirms that certain factions within the Taliban are ready for reconciliation, but the UN official cautioned that it would take months or even longer to bridge the trust deficit on both sides in order to move forward. (ANI)

Obama to host tripartite meeting with Israeli PM and Palestinian President

Jerusalem, Sep 20 (ANI): In an effort to renew the peace process in the Middle East, President Barack Obama will host a tripartite meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the meeting would take place after Obama meets separately with each of the two leaders.

“These meetings will continue the efforts of President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Special Envoy George Mitchell to lay the groundwork for the relaunch of negotiations, and to create a positive context for those negotiations so that they can succeed,” the Jerusalem Post quoted a White House statement, as saying.

The meetings will take place in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly conference.

The White House announcement of the meeting comes as something of a surprise, since both Israel and the PA until Saturday continued to blame each other for the current stall in peace talks

And recently, Mitchell had failed to make progress in talks with the two leaders.

On Saturday, Mitchell said: “It is another sign of the president’s deep commitment to comprehensive peace that he wants to personally engage at this juncture.” (ANI)

Reddy, a leader committed to ideologies of Congress: PM

New Delhi, Sep 3 (ANI) : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the departed Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajsekhar Reddy as “a dynamic and tall leader of the party”.

Speaking to reporters after the Congress Committee meeting Singh said, “We express great sorrow on the untimely demise of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was a tall and dynamic leader of the Congress party. With his intense and hard efforts he made the party as a natural choice of administration in Andhra Pradesh.”

“With the profound interest in the development he made the Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a model of governance,” Singh said.

With the death of Dr.Reddy the Congress lost an outstanding leader who is committed to the ideas and ideologies of the party. At this juncture, we express our deep condolences to the family and colleagues of Dr. Reddy and also to the families of other four members who died with him,’ Singh said.

India’s top priority is to mitigate impact of scanty rains, says Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, Aug. 25 (ANI): India has withstood global financial storm and mitigating the impact of scanty rains is government’s top priority, said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here today.

“Despite the global economic crisis, we grew by 6.7 per cent last year. This year, we are getting mixed signals and indicators are good as far as industrial production data and business demand and investor confidence are concerned. The government, however, was not in a position to lower its guard, given the uncertainties continuing in the global economic scenario.

“At this juncture, delayed monsoon has impacted many parts of the agrarian economy. Mitigating the impact of deficient monsoon is a high priority,” he told a private TV channel.

Mukherjee said the process of economic reforms, which began in early 1990s, would continue in the right earnest so that the economy returns to a growth of over 9 percent at the earliest.

Commenting on the disinvestment programme, the Finance Minister said it was aimed at expanding people’s participation in the public sector units, and gathering resources was not the main objective.

Speaking on government’s borrowing plan, he said it would not crowd out private sector investments.

“In this regard government and the RBI are in continuous touch,” Mukherjee said.

The government has plans to borrow nearly 4,00,000 crore rupees from markets during 2009-10, a rise of about 50 percent over what it borrowed a year ago, to fund the widening fiscal deficit necessitated after stimulus doses for the economy. (ANI)

‘Mysterious’ skin disease cast doubts over Akhtar’s Twenty20 World Cup participation

Lahore, May 21 (ANI): The ‘mysterious’ skin disease has created doubts about Shoaib Akhtar’s participation the Twenty20 World Cup starting from June 5 in England.

Akhtar did not participate in the Bhurban training camp, and now the skin infection has forced him out of the three practice games to be played ahead of the team’s departure to England.

“Shoaib will miss all three practice matches because of the condition. At this juncture I will not say anything more about his status in Pakistan’s squad for the World Cup but we will make an announcement on Thursday (today),” The Daily Times quoted coach Intikhab Alam, as saying.

Alam had already made it clear that Akhtar would have to prove his fitness to make it to the mega event, failing which he may be axed from the squad.

“Shoaib will have to play in the practice games otherwise there could be problems for him,” Alam had said.

The controversial pacer could find himself in more trouble with the PCB contemplating disciplinary action against him for violating the central contract with regard to his medical report submitted for skipping the national camp held in the hill resort of Bhurban.

Sources in the PCB said that board officials were unhappy with Akhtar’s medical report that allowed him to skip the conditioning camp.

They added the PCB’s view was that since Akhtar was getting medical attention privately, the board could not be held responsible if he faces any doping problems during the T20 World Cup in England. (ANI)

Shoaib suffering from a “mysterious disease”

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar is becoming a problem for the Pakistan Cricket Board, as a source has claimed the fast bowler is suffering from a “mysterious infectious disease”.

The source said the doctor treating him is not disclosing the disease, leaving the board in a fix and compelling it to take action against the maverick bowler, who has always remained in news for one reason or another, be it for fitness, doping or indiscipline.

Akhtar could find himself in more trouble with the PCB contemplating disciplinary action against the controversial pacer for violating the central contract with regard to his medical report submitted for skipping the national camp held in the hill resort of Bhurban.

However, his absence from the team at this juncture would be a great blow for the Pakistan team, The Nation reported.

Reports coming from the PCB said that board officials were unhappy with Akhtar’s medical report that allowed him to skip the conditioning camp.

Akhtar has missed the camp stating that he had a skin infection near his groin and the doctor had advised him seven to eight days rest. Incidentally, he later said he would be available for the practice matches in Lahore from May 21 ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup.

“The PCB top officials are not happy that Shoaib Akhtar again went to a private doctor without consulting or seeking permission of the medical panel of the PCB,” a source said.

He said as per his central contact with the board, Akhtar had to consult the PCB medical panel in case of any illness or fitness problem and only seek private help after getting clearance from the panel.

The source said the PCB’s view was that since Akhtar was getting medical attention privately, the board could not be held responsible if he faces any doping problems during the T20 World up in England. (ANI)

Downturn fuels direct sales

The Rs 3,500-crore Indian direct selling industry, which employs over 1.5 million entrepreneurs, is unfazed by the global slowdown. The effect of the downturn has prompted many industries to revamp their marketing activities. However, it has opened up a room of opportunities for direct marketing companies to grow even at this juncture.

The industry is currently growing and the annual revenues are expected to reach Rs 5,000 crore by 2012, according to the estimates of the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA), a self-regulatory and promoting body for the direct selling industry in India.

This target seems to be achievable especially when the industry is adding entrepreneurs every day and more and more American and European companies are finding India as their favourite destination to expand their businesses. The main reason: India and China are relatively less affected by the slowdown. India is also better placed as the industry is still in its infancy, offering a bigger scope for business, say industry experts.

Direct selling started in India only 15 years ago. Global direct selling market is at least six decades old and a $110-billion business with 58 million direct salespersons in 165 countries. Presently, the US is the world leader followed by Japan and Mexico. Even Brazil, Russia and China have higher turnover than India.

Interesting examples substantiate the growth model. For instance, Tupperware, one of the leading direct selling companies with the largest women’s network, markets premium food storage, preparation and serving items. The company forayed into the Indian market in 1996 and is today a household name.

Oriflame, another direct selling company, which offers a wide range of high-quality beauty products in the personal care and skin care segment, forayed into the market in 1995. Amway India commenced commercial operations in 1998 with just six products. But today it is a household name and offers over 100 products covering personal care category including cosmetics, home care category, nutrition, wellness category, commercial products etc.

*Impact of slowdown

According to experts who follow the industry closely, during a downturn phase which is plagued by job cuts and salary roll back, the number of entrepreneurs joining the direct selling market as agents and people who take up this profession on a whole-time basis is increasing in the country. They attribute it to the slowdown and job cuts, which has suddenly made a growing pool of educated manpower available to work as sales agents .

Says Asha Gupta, MD, Tupperware, “Recession has impacted all the sectors of the world economy, but the direct selling industry has seen a positive impact. More people have shown their trust in the industry as a route to earn supplementary income to support their households. In this economic turmoil, people are seeking alternative or additional income opportunities and direct selling is undoubtedly a great income opportunity. The percentage of women joining our company has increased in the recent times.”

Sunil Tolani, GM, Hindustan Unilever Network (HUN), which is the direct selling arm of HLL (HINDUNILVR.NS : 46 +18.6), also says that the economic slowdown has not impacted the industry but has instead helped the direct selling industry in many ways. It provides people with a supplementary source of income without a heavy monetary investment. For example, in HUN people can make additional income with an investment of just Rs 2,950 including the subscription fee and by working for only three hours a day.

On a similar note, William S Pinckney, MD and CEO, Amway India, adds: “The industry has not been impacted by recession as yet.”

Fredrik Widell, MD, Oriflame India, also explains that the slowdown had not yet impacted the industry. “The industry has grown exponentially over the last decade and will continue to grow in the coming years. The market has matured over the years. The industry has created a lot of job opportunities for the jobless and the recession has only made people take this industry more seriously,” he says. During the first year of operations in India, Oriflame had only 10,000 direct selling agents (DSAs). Now it has nearly 1,20,000 DSAs.

IDSA officials point out that the economic slowdown has made a dent on the purchasing power. However, the direct selling industry by way of providing gainful business opportunities to self employed people has created a niche for itself. In fact, pink slip employees are now joining direct selling companies to combat the recession. The direct selling opportunity would easily qualify as one of the world’s lowest cost franchises, with a similar product or service proposition as any other conventional business plan. This is the reason why direct selling has grown constantly during the past decade. Even in the present downturn, there has been no attrition in the business. Slowdown or otherwise, direct selling offers gainful employment opportunities.

*Growth driver

In 1998, the direct selling industry in India was around Rs 895 crore. Over the years, it has grown in proportion and is today valued at Rs 3,500 crore. Pinckney points out that the number of agents in the direct selling industry has also witnessed a steady growth and the total number of direct sellers in India stands at about 1.5 million as against about 8 lakh in 2000.

Says Asha Gupta of Tupperware, “Direct selling and plastic usage in the kitchen were both a new concept for customers in the earlier days. It took some time and effort for us to get acceptability. Today Tupperware has a strong brand recall and we have been able to acquire a decent market share.”

IDSA, which is only 12-years-old, has 16 members as of date including major players like AMC Cookware India, Amway India Enterprises, Avon Beauty Products India, Herbalife International India, Hindustan Unilever, Modicare, Oriflame India and Tupperware India. The association also claims to have received about five queries from foreign companies in the past two months for setting up business in India.

*Challenges ahead

The biggest challenge for the industry at this stage is to promote the establishment of a strong regulatory direct framework in India in line with the regulations available in countries like the UK, the US, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Besides, there is a need to curb an increasing tendency of unethical players entering the segment. Players in the fray are coming together to promote awareness about ethical direct selling practices and discourage pyramid selling schemes. In fact, all direct selling companies air a common view on having a stringent regulatory framework to govern the direct selling industry in order to safeguard the interest of customers. Also, a book of code of conduct clearly defines the boundaries needed.

Pinckney of Amway India admits that the growth in the direct selling industry has also brought with it some baggage in the form of fly-by-night operators and fraudulent operators who masquerade as direct selling companies. “This happens due to the absence of legislation and guidelines for this booming industry. Our appeal to the government is to enact a legislation or at least lay down some guidelines clearly spelling out what constitutes a genuine direct selling opportunity,” he says and adds, this would help all those who are aspiring to take up to the opportunity but are sceptical because of the fraudulent operators going around in the guise of direct selling.

*Competition

The direct selling market in India is at an inflection point and it needs more organised players to come in to accelerate market growth. The Indian market has a huge potential for direct selling companies. There is a lot of space for the new entrants. It is imperative that the companies understand the pulse of Indian customers and provide them the products best suited to their needs and preferences.

“In the Indian direct selling space, Tupperware does not have a very close competitor,” says Anshu Bagai, marketing director of Tupperware. Says Pinckney of Amway India, “Competition is good. It makes everyone improve products, services etc, and the consumer has several options to chose from. So, we’re looking forward to their entry, and yes, there is definitely scope for more players.” Widell of Oriflame airs a similar view. “Competition is welcome in the direct selling industry. And the market is big enough for more players,” he says.

Even at a time when the whole economy is crying about financial crisis and the impact, direct selling industry is taking pride in generating employment and providing supportive income for the family as a whole. The industry also welcomes competition with open arms as there would be more players in the industry. This would increase the size of the industry besides expanding the product basket. However, companies have to ride on the pillar of quality for longer sustenance in the market. In the process, the industry needs to be backed by supportive measures by the government in the form of regulatory framework and its strict implementation.

*Career option for women

For Ramulamma, aged about 40 years, the way of life was different before she got into direct selling of certain products. When her husband left her 30 years ago, she, along with her two kids, were left to fend for themselves. But perhaps little did she realise that by selling detergents, she could manage to meet the education expenses for her two kids. Though a tedious job, going from door-to-door, she is part of multi-level marketing business and her hands are full with loads of fast-moving products and she earns close to Rs 5,000 per month.

Direct selling provides women an opportunity to earn a supplementary income at their convenience. It gives them the freedom to work when they want to while making them financially independent. Women are more adept at selling products like home care solutions, personal care, cosmetics and some nutritional products as well.

According to statistics, globally, about 60% of those engaged in direct selling are women. “In Tupperware, we have all women salesforce from varied backgrounds. Direct selling is an apt career option for the Indian woman who wishes to create the perfect balance between family and profession,” says Asha Gupta of Tupperware.

So, is the case with HUN. About 40% of the distributors are women and the number is growing rapidly. A majority of HUN’s women partners use this supplementary income for investment in their children’s higher education, and buying white goods for their households and families.

“Oriflame being a cosmetics selling company has more women DSAs. Nearly 90% of our agents are women. It is a good career option for both men and women. In fact, when Oriflame came into the market, the first catalogue had only 53 odd products but today we have 700 products in personal and skin care segments. We plan to add 400 more products during the year 2009 across the cosmetic segment,” says Widell of Oriflame.

Vaiko seeks UN intervention in Sri Lankan crisis

Chennai, Apr 19 (ANI): Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) founder V. Gopalswamy on Sunday urged the United Nations’ intervention to solve the Sri Lankan crisis.

Gopalswamy, commonly known as Vaiko, said that the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in India should be lifted and the UN should send troops to Sri Lanka to stop the war.

“When the world is ready to pressurise Sri Lanka on war, even then the Indian government is not ready to put pressure on the island nation. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse is doing everything he wants to do. At this juncture, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) should send its troops to stop war in Sri Lanka, just the way it intervened in Kosovo,” Vaiko said while releasing his party’s manifesto here.

Vaiko also praised All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, saying she deserved to be a fit candidate for the Prime Minister’s post.

“Jayalalithaa is a dynamic leader with versatile capabilities. She deserves to be a fit candidate for the Prime Minister’s post. We will cross the bridge when it comes. But when the occasion arises, I will raise my voice in her support,” he added.

When pointed out Jayalalithaa herself had declared that she had no aspirations to become Prime Minister, Vaiko said, “She may not have any aspirations. But we will raise our voice.” (ANI)

Prabhakaran agrees to rescue mission by a Western country: Report

Colombo, April 12 (IANS) Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tiger chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, who is said to be facing a military rout at the hands of the government troops, has ‘agreed to a rescue mission by a western country’, a state-run media report said Sunday.

The report comes a week after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) lost the cream of its fighting cadre, including a dozen battle-hardened leaders in the fight for Puthukkudiyiruppu. It was their last bastion where the rebels had maintained several military and naval bases and armoury over the past three decades.

It said that the ‘diplomatic moves are now on’ to get the LTTE to agree to allow the civilians to move out of the No-Fire-Zone. The government has refused to agree to any ceasefire with the LTTE at this juncture, fearing that ‘the LTTE may use such an opportunity to strengthen itself or to flee the country with the support of outsiders’.

‘Diplomatic sources indicate that Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran has apparently agreed to a rescue mission by a Western country,’ the state-run Sunday Observer said.

‘He has agreed to this offer after he lost all his top level leaders in the Puthukkudiyiruppu battle as there is no point for him to operate there in the No-Fire-Zone without the ability to give leadership to the remaining cadres,’ it said.

Amid mounting international concern for the safety of thousands of civilians trapped in a small strip of coastal land in the island’s north-eastern Mullaitivu district, US ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert O’Blake had met Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka.

According to the media report, the US ambassador ‘had apparently made a request for him (army chief) to agree to a seven days’ ceasefire to rescue the civilians trapped inside the No-Fire-Zone’.

‘But the army commander has reportedly said that any decision to enter into ceasefire should be taken by the government but has agreed to have a 48-hour pause in firing if there is a guarantee that civilians are allowed to move out of the No-Fire-Zone freely,’ the Sunday Observer said.

Killing over 525 LTTE cadres in 72 hours of fierce battle for Puthukkudiyiruppu, the military said that the troops were ‘close to the last leg of the war’ against the LTTE which has been fighting for a separate state over the past quarter century.

‘As the troops are poised to enter the No-Fire-Zone, it has been reported that Prabhakaran is making an effort to flee the country apparently with the assistance of the Norwegian government,’ the media report said.

It said although there had been no official intimation about the discussions the Tamil Tigers had with the Norwegian government, LTTE’s political leader Nadesan has had a lengthy discussion with the Norwegians about the situation in the No-Fire-Zone.

There is no immediate response from the LTTE in this regard.

A top visiting UN envoy has said that over 100,000 civilians were ‘trapped in the 14 sq km no-fire zone’ and expressed deep concern for their lives.

Ex-IPS man who fought rioters now in BJP

Retired IPS officer A I Saiyed, who had a brush with the rioting mobs in the 2002 post-Godhra violence in Ahmedabad, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A day after joining the party, reportedly on the invitation of the BJP Gujarat president, Purshottam Rupala, Saiyed said, “I have received over two dozen phone calls greeting me for the bold initiative I have taken.” But why the BJP, that too at this juncture? He said the party is better than the Congress to join hands “at this juncture”.

“People are happy at this development and even met me personally. But their names cannot be revealed now,” he said when asked about the reaction from his community, adding, he would rope in more members from the community.

A 1978-batch IPS officer, Saiyed retired as an Additional Director General of Police and currently lives in the Muslim-dominated ghetto of Ahmedabad city- Juhapura. A native of north Gujarat, Saiyed said he joined the BJP as he was impressed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s administrative acumen.

When Saiyed was the Joint Director of the Gujarat Police Academy in 2002, during the riots, a mob of around 1,000 people had stopped his official car and tried to attack him after spotting his nameplate on his uniform. He remembers that his driver, a Hindu, had raced the car away to safety.

Saiyed said the incident has no bearing on his joining the BJP, and that he is willing to do any work that would be given to him in the coming days of election campaign, including canvassing for Patan BJP candidate Bhavsinh Rathore among local Muslims.

“I have done so much for all communities during my service that my presence itself in the area will be good enough for the people to vote for our candidate,” said Saiyed, who feels the dual policies of Muslim leaders pushed him to the BJP. Talking of ideology? “The Congress has an ideology, but only on paper,” he said

What will he gain from joining the BJP and what was his expectation, especially when the top BJP leaders openly tell Muslims that they could join the party at their own risk and peril without expecting anything? Saiyed responded to this saying he was not expecting any favours. “Expecting things like a party position or ticket is not my nature,” said Saiyed, whose entry to the BJP was cleared at all the levels after a prolonged process.

Welcoming this, BJP’s minority cell convener Sajjad Heera said it was a sign of the party gaining acceptance among “good Muslims” and this would improve the party’s image among the community members soon.

Prime ministerial candidate to be chosen by consensus: Naidu

New Delhi, Mar 18 (ANI): Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday that the decision on the Third Party’s prime ministerial candidate would be taken by consensus.

Talking to the reporters here, Naidu said, “There is only one seat for prime minister’s post. Many people have aspirations. Ultimately, we have to bring some consensus. I am confident people will realise this. Ultimately they will adjust on consensus candidate that will emerge.”

However, Naidu refused to comment on Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati’s probability to be a consensus candidate. “I cannot comment on these things at this juncture. Reason is very clear – all of us have to sit in a coalition politics then decide the candidate,” he said.

Naidu, further clarified that he was not interested for the prime ministerial post.

“Never have I aspired, even in future. I am not a candidate. Twice I got an offer, I made very clear I am not an aspirant,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had reportedly revealed her ambition to hold the top post soon after the Third Front was formed.

However, on March 15, she announced that her party would not form alliance with any party and would contest the coming general elections alone.

Mayawati, who had invited the Third Front for a dinner meeting on the same day, dismissed reports of having given any ultimatum of 48 hours to the Third Front to declare her as their prime ministerial candidate. (ANI)

Mulayam submits his reply to Election Commission on cash distribution charges

Lucknow, Mar. 14 (ANI): Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has submitted his reply to the Election Commission after being noticed for distributing cash at a ‘Holi Milan’ function at his native Saifai village.

“I have submitted the reply to the EC before the expiry of the deadline. We were asked to submit our reply by March 14, but we did it a day in advance. I am confident that the Commission will be satisfied with it,” he said.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, who defended cash distribution as part of an age-old tradition, did not elaborate on the contents of his reply to the EC notice for alleged violation of poll code.

“You will come to know about the content of my reply from the Election Commission itself. Don’t force (me) to divulge the content at this juncture,” he said.

Yadav said giving reward during Holi festival was customary for him, but TV channels were creating “unnecessary controversy” on the issue.

“But I am very thankful that this has brought the SP at the centre of discussion. For a political party, charcha (discussion), kharcha (expenditure) and parcha (newspapers) are very important. A leader cannot survive without these three things. I am happy that SP is in discussion due to all this controversy,” Yadav added. (ANI)

Sharif demands FIR against Benazir’s killers

Faisalabad, Mar 8 (ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif has demanded that the government should immediately register an FIR in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and arrest the accused in the case.

Addressing a public meeting at the Iqbal Park here, he said despite the passage of more than one year, the ruling party has registered no FIR.

After the end of the lawyers’ long march, he said, the PML-N would stage rallies for the arrest of Benazir Bhutto’s killers.

He denied the involvement of PML-N workers in vandalising the memorial of Benazir Bhutto, and asked the PPP workers to take out a rally along with him for unearthing the assassins of Benazir Bhutto.

Sharif called upon workers of all political parties, especially the PPP, to participate in the long march, The News reported.

He said the PML-N fully supported the just cause of lawyers for the restoration of the deposed judges and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

He said political workers could play a decisive role at this critical juncture to bring true and lasting democracy in the country.

The PML-N leader said that he had signed an agreement with slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto for the restoration of democracy and all the deposed judges, and that Benazir had announced at her public meetings in Karachi and Rawalpindi that she herself would hoist the Pakistani flag at the residence of the deposed chief justice.

Before assuming power, he said, President Asif Ali Zardari also signed the agreement on March 9 at Murree and then on August 5 in Dubai and on August 7 in London, pledging that both the PPP and PML-N leaders would honour the agreements and restore the deposed judges within 24 hours.

He said the PML-N was still sticking to the agreements, President Zardari had betrayed them. “Nawaz Sharif is made in Pakistan” who would live and die for Pakistan, he said.

If President Zardari announced the restoration of all the judges, he said, he would not claim anything more from him during the remaining tenure of four years. (ANI)
