Shia Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday

Lucknow, Sept 20 (ANI): A senior official of Shia Muslim community has said that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated on Monday.

Kalbe Sadiq, Shia cleric and senior vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said here that the Ramadan moon would be sighted on Sunday.

“I can say without any doubt that in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and in India, the moon will be sighted on Sunday. Sunni, Shia and all other sects of Islam will celebrate the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday,” Sadiq said.

However, Sunni Muslims disagreed, saying they would wait for the sighting of moon before declaring Eid.

“If the moon is sighted on September 20, or if the sighting in reported form anywhere, then Eid will be celebrated on the 21st. And if it is not sighted on the 20th and there are no reports either, in that case it will be celebrated on the 22nd,” said Maulana Khalid Rasheed, head of Lucknow’s Firangi Mahal.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a daylong fast and open it in the evening.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month, which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy. (ANI)

Alonso reveals real reason behind his decision to quit Liverpool

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, who knew that his time at Liverpool was up a year ago, has now revealed the full details behind a dramatic 28 million pounds Anfield exit.

Alonso admits the decision to skip a Champions League match for the birth of his son almost three years ago caused a rift with manager Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

And the midfielder admits he found it hard to accept being classed as a cash cow when Benitez tried to sell him a year ago, The Sun reports.

Alonso, 27, is now one of the next generation of Real Madrid ‘Galacticos’ after his switch last month. But only now has he spoken out about his relationship with fellow Spaniard Benitez – and the joy of feeling wanted at Real.

“It was a tough call and a very difficult decision to make after five years at the club. I have always said that it has been a professional relationship. I have always tried to do what he asked me to do, to try to deliver on the pitch, to do the talking on the pitch,” he said.

Benitez made no secret of wanting to bring Gareth Barry to the club from Aston Villa last year.

Alonso was identified as the valuable asset to fund the move. The deal did not materialise and Barry ended up joining Manchester City in the most recent transfer window.

“Last summer when the club proposed I had to be sold to get funds to sign new players. It was difficult to accept that. I accept it as a professional but that moment probably changed my mind – and I thought, maybe, from that moment it was maybe time for a change,” Alonso said.

Benitez did little to disguise his displeasure with playmaker Alonso when he opted out of a Champions League last-16 second leg at Inter Milan with Liverpool leading 2-0 to be with his pregnant wife.

Alonso said: “When the birth of my child happened, I had to make a decision. I had to be with my family as it was a very important moment.” (ANI)

US reality TV stars expecting their 19th child!

London, Sep 2 (ANI): The couple from reality TV show ’18 Kids and Counting’ have announced that they are expecting their 19th child.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, from Tonitown, Arkansas, say that they are ‘thrilled’ to be expecting a new addition next spring, despite already having ten sons and eight daughters aged from eight months to 21.

“We are so thrilled. We just couldn’t believe it is happening,” the Telegraph quoted Michelle Duggar, 42, as having told People magazine.

Jim Bob, 44, added: “This never gets old. We are so grateful for each child. We are looking forward to our first grand baby and our 19th child.”

The couple’s eldest son Joshua, 21, and his wife Anna are also expecting a child next month.

The Duggars have confirmed that the new baby will be given a name beginning with the letter ‘J’, just like all the couple’s other children.

The existing Duggar children are called: Josh, 21, twins Jana and John-David, 19; Jill, 18; Jessa, 16; Jinger, 15; Joseph, 14; Josiah, 13; Joy-Anna, 11; twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah, 10; Jason, 9; James, 8; Justin, 6; Jackson, 5; Johanna, 3; Jennifer, 2, and Jordyn-Grace, 8 months.

If the Duggars continue to breed at the same rate the next generation will have 400 members, the third generation will have 8,000, the fourth 160,000, and the fifth 3.2 million.

This would mean that one in ever hundred people in America would be a Duggar, there would be more Duggars than Latvians, and there would be more Duggars than residents of America’s 21 least populous states. (ANI)

‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ make it to Collins English Dictionary

London, Aug 31 (ANI): ‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ are among the 267 words that have been added to this year’s Collins English Dictionary, all thanks to teenagers who use such words on social networking websites.

With teenagers increasingly using these grunts and sighs in words on Twitter and other such websites, the need to find spellings for sounds that were traditionally used only in speech has also spawned “meh” (an expression of dissatisfaction) and “mwah” (the sound of a noisy kiss).

Users of social networking sites may also be responsible for the resurgence of “heigh-ho” or “hey-ho” – an exclamation of weariness, disappointment, surprise or happiness – that went out of fashion in the early 20th century.

In fact, Twitter-the microblogging site that allows people to communicate in messages of 140 characters or less-has also been accepted as a verb by the dictionary to describe the act of using Twitter.

Other internet-derived terms include “noob” (short for newbie, a term for someone unfamiliar with web etiquette) and “woot” (an expression of joy conveying a sense of achievement).

New abbreviations used for convenience in text messages such as “OMG” (short for “oh, my God”) “soz” (short for sorry) and wtf (short for “what the f***?”) are also included in the dictionary.

Some new words in the dictionary could make many traditionalists cringe in their seats-new portmanteau words purporting to describe a new trend include “staycation” (a combination of stay and vacation, meaning to take a holiday without going abroad) and “glamping” (glamorous camping).

“Buzzkillers” (someone who stops other people from enjoying themselves), and “beer o’clock” (a time considered appropriate to start drinking) may also take many traditionalists by surprise.

“English is very good at absorbing new words. [But] in three or four years a lot of these words may have fallen out of use and might well come out of the dictionary,” Times Online quoted Elaine Higgleton, the Editorial Director for Collins, as saying. (ANI)

Lovelorn lady gorillas at London Zoo go wild over new guy

London, August 28 (ANI): Just like posters showing football ace David Beckham stripped to his briefs leave his women fans drooling, lovelorn lady gorillas at London Zoo were also found to have a similar reaction to pictures of a continental hunk.

The keepers of Mjukuu, 10, Effie, 16, and Zaire, 34-who have lacked male attention since the death of their silverback mate Bobby in December-recently gave the girls their first glimpse of 20-stone Yeboah, 12, who is due to arrive from France within weeks.

Judging by their reaction to the pictures, they hope that sparks should fly when the new boy arrives at London Zoo.

According to them, Zaire was the most appreciative, as she carefully wedged her pictures into the bark of tree to show them off to best effect.

Teenager Effie was found to tenderly clutch one of the photos to her bosom, but she later ate it.

Youngster Mjukuu also appeared to be delighted at the prospect of a new boyfriend, for she threw her head back and roared with joy.

“It would be nice to think they’ll recognise him. I wouldn’t be surprised if the penny drops when he arrives,” the Daily Express quoted keeper Tracey Lee as saying.

The newspaper further revealed that German-born Yeboah was being shown pictures of the girls by staff at La Boissiere Du Dore zoo in the Loire, so that he would feel at home when they meet.

Lee said: “We think Yeboah will go for Mjukuu first because she’s very pretty and she’s a big flirt.” (ANI)

Freddie out for dinner with missus and family after Ashes victory

London, Aug.24 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who is to go under the knife on Tuesday, will take his wife Rachael, parents and kids out for dinner, to celebrate the return of the Ashes with the 197-run victory over Australia at The Oval.

“I will take the missus out for dinner and spend the day with my family. But I’ll be ‘nil by mouth’ after midnight on Monday because of the operation,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Freddie hurled and hugged his son Corey and sister Holly, five, after the win, while Rachael brought one-year-old son Rocky down from the stands.

Freddie’s emotional dad Colin, 57, joined the wild celebrations, shedding tears of joy as he enjoyed the magical moment. The star’s proud mum Susan also came over to give him a hug.

Fred, who will have an operation to fix a knee injury tomorrow, said: “This is a special moment. I was nearly in tears when I saw my Mum up there. It’s like a dream, quite surreal at the moment. I don’t know what to do with myself.”

The Lancashire hero admitted he would not be repeating the boozy antics which saw him in a near-daze as he celebrated England’s last Ashes triumph in 2005.

The party mood spread nationwide last night among thrilled fans who’d seen England thump fierce rivals Australia to win the fifth and deciding Test by 197 runs.

The resounding victory ensured they clinched the summer series 2-1 and reclaimed the coveted Ashes urn they lost Down Under in 2006.

Captain Andrew Strauss said: “The guys have done amazingly. When we were bad we were very bad, and when we were good, we managed to be good enough.”

The squad headed straight from the pitch to the players’ lounge for a post-match party.

A security guard revealed two more crates of booze had to be sent in early in the evening after the stars nearly drank the bar dry.

The England squad left the Oval in a convoy of taxis just after 11 p.m. to continue their celebrations at their East London hotel.

Fans partied in pubs around the ground – many draped in England flags. England and Aussie supporters drank side by side. Downing Street also saluted the squad last night.

A spokesman said: “The Prime Minister will be writing to congratulate them on their exhilarating victory.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson, called England’s win an “incredible triumph”.

Even gutted Australians praised England in defeat. Tim Hussey, 28, from Melbourne, said: “It was an epic series. And I’m pleased Freddie went out with a bang.” (ANI)

Positive emotions build resilience, boost life satisfaction

Washington, July 11 (ANI): People who make sure that their lives are filled with frequent moments of positive emotions, tend to have increased resilience against challenges, according to a new study by researchers at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson and her colleagues have suggested that people should build on a daily diet of positive emotions to ensure increased levels of life satisfaction.

“This study shows that if happiness is something you want out of life, then focusing daily on the small moments and cultivating positive emotions is the way to go,” she said.

She added: “Those small moments let positive emotions blossom, and that helps us become more open. That openness then helps us build resources that can help us rebound better from adversity and stress, ward off depression and continue to grow.”

The month long study involved 86 participants, who were asked to submit daily “emotion reports”, rather than answering general questions like, “Over the last few months, how much joy did you feel?”

“Getting those daily reports helped us gather more accurate recollections of feelings and allowed us to capture emotional ups and downs,” said Fredrickson.

She said that building up a daily diet of positive emotions does not require banishing negative emotions, and the study helps to show that to be happy, people do not need to adopt a “Pollyanna-ish” approach and deny the upsetting aspects of life.

“The levels of positive emotions that produced good benefits weren’t extreme. Participants with average and stable levels of positive emotions still showed growth in resilience even when their days included negative emotions,” said Fredrickson.

She suggested that one should focus on the “micro-moments” that can help unlock one positive emotion here or there.

“A lot of times we get so wrapped up in thinking about the future and the past that we are blind to the goodness we are steeped in already, whether it’s the beauty outside the window or the kind things that people are doing for you,” she said.

She added: “The better approach is to be open and flexible, to be appreciative of whatever good you do find in your daily circumstances, rather than focusing on bigger questions, such as ‘Will I be happy if I move to California?’ or ‘Will I be happy if I get married?’”

The study, titled ‘Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life Satisfaction by Building Resilience’, has been published in the journal Emotion. (ANI)
