Septuagenarian John Cleese: Relationship with Wade, 39, “a disgrace”

Melbourne, April 29 (ANI): Comedian John Cleese has confessed that his relationship with Jennifer Wade, 31 years his junior, ‘is a disgrace’.

While talking about the age difference with newfound love Wade, 39, Cleese, 70, said, “It’s a disgrace”.

However, Cleese, who has been married and divorced thrice, admitted that he’s “loved up”, reported The Daily Mail newspaper.

Recently, he stated his age difference as “inappropriate” on television England.

“I’ve found someone who is very age inappropriate. Jenny is 39 – making it 31 years” difference – which is a disgrace,” The Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“We’ve only been together three or four months – but she is the most … playful creature.” (ANI)

Shaquille O’Neal happiest celeb on Twitter

London, April 21 (ANI): A study by researchers at the University of Edinburgh Business school has found that American basketball player Shaquille O’Neal is the happiest celebrity on Twitter.

The study examined tweets sent out by 13 celebrities.

Researchers used a computer program to find the word patterns of the tweets to figure out the inherent emotions and calculate the relative happiness, reports The Scotsman.

O’Neal topped the chart, followed by cyclist Lance Armstrong and TV presenter Jonathan Ross.

Following the top three positions were comedian John Cleese while tennis player Andy Murray and comedian Russell Brand shared the fifth spot.

Rapper Snoop Dogg was the least happy celeb, according to the report. (ANI)

John Cleese pays £3,300 taxi fare from Oslo to Brussels!

London, April 17 (ANI): English actor John Cleese is said to have reportedly paid 3,300 pounds as taxi fare from Oslo to Brussels after he was stranded in the Norwegian capital by the volcanic ash plume from Iceland.

Cleese, 70, was in Norway to appear on the Scandinavian talk show Skavlan, and when the cloud descended, closing airspace around the city, he is said to have taken a cab on April 16.

“We checked every option, but there were no boat and no train tickets available,” the Guardian quoted him as telling Norwegian TV2 in a telephone interview posted on the network’s website.

“That’s when my fabulous assistant determined that the easiest thing would be to take a taxi,” he said.

The taxi carried two extra drivers for the 930-mile journey.

“It will be interesting. I’m not in a hurry,” Cleese said, adding that from Brussels he planned to take the Eurostar train to London, where he hoped to arrive on April 17.

“I will think about a joke you’ve probably already heard: how do you get God to laugh? Tell him your plans,” he added. (ANI)

Stranded in Oslo, Cleese takes taxi to Brussels

British comedy legend John Cleese took a $5,400 taxi ride from Oslo to Brussels after becoming stranded in Europe’s volcanic ash travel crisis.

“We checked every option, but there were no boats and no train tickets available,” Cleese told Norwegian TV2 in a telephone interview posted on the network’s website in Norwegian.

“That’s when my fabulous assistant determined the easiest thing would be to take a taxi.”

The bill? A whopping 30,000 kroner ($5,400), said Cleese, who was visiting the Norwegian capital to take part in the popular Scandinavian talk show Skavlan.

The taxi carried two extra drivers for the 1,500-kilometre drive, TV2 reported.

“It will be interesting. I’m not in a hurry,” Cleese said, adding that from Brussels he planned to take the Eurostar train to London, where he hoped to arrive by 3:00pm (local time) Saturday.

“I will think about a joke you’ve probably already heard: How do you get God to laugh? Tell him your plans,” Cleese said.

The comedian, famous for his roles in Fawlty Towers and Monty Python, is not the only one spending heavily on taxis as the volcanic ash from Iceland spreads over Europe.

According to Oslo Taxi, drivers have made numerous trips between Oslo and Stockholm since Thursday and a number of fares have gone even further.

“The longest trip so far was from Oslo to Paris,” Oslo Taxi spokesman Lars Dolva told the NTB news agency.

Volcano leaves travel plans in ashes

Qantas estimates flights to Europe and the UK will not be operating again until Sunday as a volcanic ash cloud blasting out of an Icelandic glacier caused massive disruptions to global air traffic.

The European air traffic agency Eurocontrol says about 60 per cent of all European flights, about 17,000 in total, will be cancelled and delays will continue into Sunday.

It is the most extensive shutdown of airspace since the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Europe’s three biggest airports – London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt – were closed by the ash, which is a threat to jet engines and pilot visibility.

Austria, Belgium, Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland shut down all or most of their airspace.

Finland, France, Germany, Russia and Spain experienced major disruption, although Sweden and Ireland gradually reopened their airspace and Norway temporarily allowed some flights as the ash drifted away.

But thousands of passengers worldwide have had their travel plans trashed. Some, including British comedy legend John Cleese, have resorted to taking extreme taxi rides to travel across the continent.

In Britain travellers have been caught by surprise, turning up to airports to learn flights have been grounded.

“We’ve been told our flights are completely cancelled – all of the UK and Ireland – so there’s very little information about what to do,” one traveller said.

Some would-be flyers are confused why the airlines are being so cautious.

“I mean the plane flies at 36,000 to 40,000 feet above the clouds. As you get in you can fly below the cloud as well. So why is there a delay?” another traveller said.

But volcanic ash and aviation do not mix. In the worst cases volcanic ash can cause aircraft engines to shut down.

In 1982 a British Airways flight to Perth flew into a cloud of volcanic ash over Indonesia. The engines cut out one by one.

Eric Moody was in the cockpit.

“You couldn’t see out through the windscreen. It abraded the lens of the landing lights, they didn’t work. It took all the paint off and it stopped all four engines,” Mr Moody said.

The flight safety officer for the British Airline Pilots’ Association, Dave Reynolds, says the problem with the ash is not confined to it getting into engines.

“Under conditions where the pilots are using their instruments to fly the aircraft, they’ll find themselves in the very dangerous situation of not being able to have reliable instruments,” he said.

The ash cloud has spread over northern Poland too, jeopardising the travel plans of world leaders who hope to attend this weekend’s funeral for president Lech Kaczynski.

He was killed in a plane crash last Saturday.

Airport agony

Air services have been disrupted in the Asia-Pacific region as well.

Singapore Airlines has cancelled flights out of London, Munich, Manchester and Amsterdam and services from Singapore to London.

Qantas has dropped flights to London and Frankfurt and estimates they will not be resuming until Sunday.

Dejan Milinkovic was due to fly to Frankfurt on a Qantas flight. He emailed the airline and asked what he should do.

The advice was to come to Sydney Airport.

“They said come down here. I changed my flight. That flight terminates in Singapore and now they’ve rebooked me on Monday,” he said.

Mr Milinkovic should really be back home in Europe this weekend but cannot do much about it.

“My fiance’s been waiting for me. My future mother-in-law’s got a 70th birthday party surprise tomorrow so it’s all put on hold.”

Qantas spokesman David Epstein says the airline has had to suspend flights at short notice.

“It’s been very much a fluid situation. We’re in the same position as many other airlines,” he said.

“We’re basically at the mercy of obviously the volcano and when the UK authorities close the airspace.

“We were able to bring forward two flights we had going out of London by an hour to get them out safely.

“But unfortunately the remaining two flights that we had there, we couldn’t get clearance to get them out in time… so they are remaining in the UK until flights can move from the UK.”

It is not known when that will be.

Standard procedure

Mr Epstein says they have tried to keep travellers informed, including those on flights shared with partner airlines like British Airways.

“Where people are on code-shared flights they will be informed because that’s a standard procedure with British Airways and Qantas where we code-shared air flights under the joint service agreement to the UK,” he said.

“We each notify the other passengers where they might be affected.”

But some people have been left out of the loop.

Jean Marie Betermier was booked on an Air France flight to Singapore operated by Qantas, but he did not know it was cancelled until he came to the airport.

“I wanted to fly by tomorrow to Paris, so I just have been given the information [and] have to adapt.

Mr Betermier is the chief executive officer of IER which sells equipment for airports and airlines to help them to stay in contact with passengers.

He sees the humour in his current situation, which has left him stuck in Sydney with less than perfect information.

Mr Betermier hopes to be back in Europe by Monday, but that is looking on the bright side.

‘Monty Python’ pals John Cleese and Michael Palin may work together again

London, September 20 (ANI): Former ‘Monty Python’ stars John Cleese, 69, and Michael Palin, 66, may soon be working together again.

They are said to have been discussing reuniting for the first time in more than a decade.

The pair met last month while Cleese, who lives in California, was in London after his 12million-pound divorce from third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger.

Palin revealed on Michael Ball’s Radio 2 show that they were chatting about old times then Cleese, 69, said: “Wouldn’t it be good to act again?”

The Daily Express quoted Palin as saying: “I saw John the other night and we were saying it would be nice to do some acting again, so you never know.”

Palin’s agent, however, said that there were no definite plans yet for the pair to work together.

The pair starred together in the hit movie ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ in 1988, and its sequel ‘Fierce Creatures’ in 1997. (ANI)

Queen’s Freddie Mercury tops ‘Britain’s Greatest Ever Moustache’ list

London, Aug 19 (ANI): Rock band Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury has walked away with the title of ‘Britain’s Greatest Ever Moustache’ in a new poll.

Mercury has topped the celebrity moustache poll with John Cleese’s moustache in Fawlty Towers occupying the second spot.

The third place went to former Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener who famously issued the famous World War One “Britain Wants You” rallying call.

Legendary comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplain’s short dark tache and former England keeper David Seaman’s facial hair wrapped up the top five.

The poll of 3,000 men was carried by Remington to support the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign’s Tacheback initiative, which raises funds to tackle testicular and prostate cancers.

“Freddie Mercury has topped the charts once again by taking first place in this poll,” the Telegraph quoted Nikki McReynolds of Remington as saying.

“Freddie was obviously proud of his facial hair as he once announced mid concert ‘it’s my moustache and I’m going to keep it’.

“The sporting of a moustache is a bold statement in this day and age – but with our Tacheback initiative we want to encourage Brits to ‘grow a tache and raise cash’ for testicular and prostate cancers – which affects 36,000 men in the UK every year,” McReynolds added.

Britain’s top 10 Greatest Ever Moustache list:

1. Freddie Mercury

2. John Cleese

3. Lord Kitchener

4. Charlie Chaplin

5. David Seaman

6. Bruce Forsyth

7. Terry Thomas

8. Peter Sellers

9. Des Lynam

Fawlty Towers will never return because cast members are “too old, tired”: Cleese

London, May 7 (ANI): John Cleese has ruled out return of Fawlty Towers, insisting that the castmembers are “too old and tired.”

The 69-year-old said “everyone would be excited if we did” but that the “bar has moved so high” that a remake would be “good – not very good”.

Cleese gave his comments as he, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth and Andrew Sachs reunited for the first time in 30 years to promote a documentary for TV channel G.O.L.D, reports The BBC.

Only 12 episodes of the 1970s sitcom about a grumpy hotelier were ever made.

Cleese, who wrote the tales of Basil Fawlty with ex-wife and co-star Booth, said he had to work for 43 weeks – “writing, performing and filming” – to make each of the two series.

Cleese said: “It took so much energy to do that show. I think everyone would be excited if we did it [a new series]. The problem is, when you do do something that is generally accepted as being very good, a horrible problem arises which is, how do you top it?

“The expectation of what you will do is so high.”

Cleese and Booth – who played waitress Polly Sherman – had taken the decision jointly to stop at two series, he said.

“We both felt we’d done our best and we just knew that, if we did it, it wouldn’t be as good. It would be good but not very good,” he explained. (ANI)

Monty Python’s Flying Circus members to reunite for a documentary tribute

Washington, Mar 31 (ANI): The members of the Brit comedy TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus are all set to reunite for an upcoming TV documentary tribute.

The remaining members of the sitcom – John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam – have all given their nod to the 6-episode Monty Python documentary ‘Almost the Truth’ (The Lawyer’s Cut), which will debut in America as part of cable network IFC’s Python Week.

“This is the documentary I always hoped would be made – something so complete and so faithful to the truth that I don’t need to watch it,” Contactmusic quoted Terry Jones as saying.

The documentary will “study the Pythons up close” and feature the thoughts of fans who are “rock stars, comedians, actors, politicians, writers, broadcasters, religious groups, Python-haters and potential axe murderers.”

Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, Eddie Izzard, Dan Aykroyd and Tim Roth will also contribute to the documentary with their thoughts.

IFC boss George Lentz said: “This is the first time the Pythons have come together for a project since 1983′s Monty Python’s Meaning of Life. This documentary series is a final opportunity for them to chronicle the Python phenomenon on record as they approach their 40th anniversary, and leave it at that.”

The documentary will also serve as a tribute to late Python actor Graham Chapman, who lost his battle with cancer in 1989.

Following the TV run, the documentary will be released on DVD internationally. (ANI)

Unseen footage of ‘Fawlty Towers’ to be aired to mark 30th anniversary

London, Mar 5 (ANI): Unseen footage of British classic comedy ‘Fawlty Towers’, which ran for only 12 episodes in the late 1970s, will be aired to mark 30 years since the show ended.

John Cleese – who wrote the original series with his then wife Connie Booth, who played Polly – will front the programme.

They will be joined by fellow stars Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales.

“Fawlty Towers is almost everyone’s favourite sitcom so there will be a huge appetite for this. John will be rooting around for some of the best clips and talking through his favourite bits,” the Sun quoted a source, as saying.

“And there will be some unseen footage that hit the cutting room floor too. It will be a real trip down memory lane for fans,” the source added. (ANI)

John Cleese’s lover says he’s got the package of a 19-year-old

London, Jan 19 (ANI): English actor John Cleese has apparently impressed his new lady love Barbie Orr very much, as she has boasted that the 69-year-old comedian has the package of a 19-year-old.

Orr, 27, had met Cleese in October last year, and despite the big age gap, she says that they share a passionate love life.

The two of them started hanging out at his cottage in nearby Santa Barbara, having late-night rendezvous at the ocean-fronted Loews Hotel in Santa Monica and a romantic weekend in New York.

Orr, who was very conscious of Cleese’s age, said that although he was a “great kisser”, they did not sleep together until their third date.

“I kept picturing him naked. I wondered what someone that old looks like and would I actually sleep with them? For his birthday I was thinking about buying him a zimmer frame!” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“The first time I knew we were going to do it, I was acting like a total jerk.

“I turned up at his place in glasses and acting really nerdy. He was going to New York the next day for two months and I thought if he has a piece of this it will seal the deal – and I’m sorry, but it did.

“I can’t get into what he really looks like naked, but for an old guy, you know, they’re normally saggy down there, but he really has a nice package.

“He takes a lot of vitamin supplements and eats really well and he works out. His arms are really muscular and he still has amazing legs.

“He’s had his teeth all redone and he recently got hair plugs (transplants from other parts of the body) to cover the bald patches at the front.

“He’s getting back on the market again so he’s got to get himself in shape.

“And he is very romantic. He bought me a little white porcelain mouse to match his nickname for me. And he also bought me earrings that look like eyeballs with eyelashes that move up and down!” she added. (ANI)
