Stressful job can increase risk of asthma

London May 27 (IANS) Being part of a stressful job can increase a person’s risk of developing asthma by 40 percent, reveals a new study.

The research led by Heidelberg University in Germany tracked 5,000 men and women aged between 40 and 65 over eight years. They found that among those free of asthma at the start of the project, there was up to a 40 percent higher incidence of asthma eight years later if they suffered stress at work.

The signs were long working hours, demanding schedules and uncomfortable working conditions.

‘Our study suggests work stress and the inability to relax after work are associated with an increased risk of asthma,’ dailymail.co.uk quoted the report as saying.

Earlier studies have shown stress can lead to the release of chemicals that promote allergies and disrupt the way the body halts inflammation of the airways.

However, the team stressed that the absolute risk of someone developing asthma because they are overloaded at work is still very small.

The study appears in journal Allergy.

Wanted: Beer taster for ‘world’s best job’

London, May 20 (ANI): The good-old position of the ale taster is being resurrected by a London market, which calls it the “best job in the world”.

The holder of the voluntary post will have to sample beers from London pubs to “test for quality”.

The job has been reintroduced by Spitalfields Market, which was set up in 1683.

Wellington Market Company, which manages the market, is inviting applications for the post.

“Although the attraction of the role may seem obvious at first, the 21st century version would incorporate many more responsibilities than the original,” the Telegraph quoted company boss Malcolm Ball, as saying.

He added: “Our ale taster would become an ambassador for food and drink in the area.”

According to Ball, the winning candidate would have to have a “sound knowledge of local, regional, national and international beers”, and that “he or she must be passionate about the subject”.

“It must be stated that although the role is voluntary, it obviously carries benefits,” he added. (ANI)

The governor’s remarks came during an interview with James Lipton at Chelsea Piers in New York.

The New York Post reported that when asked what his favourite job was, the Terminator star said: “English teacher.”

Lipton then asked: “Least favourite job?” to which Schwarzenegger replied: “Fluffer.” (ANI)

Prince William may delay full-time royal duties to continue RAF job

London, March 22 (ANI): Prince William may delay plans to start full-time royal duties and continue his time in the Royal Air Force, it has emerged.

The second in line to the British throne was said to be aware that his abandoning the RAF in 2012 after his planned three-year tour of duty as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot will cost taxpayers 400,000 pounds.

The 28-year-old royal apparently realises he will have only repaid about half the 800,000 pounds cost of training him if he decides to leave the Army and reportedly wants to extend his military time.

“If you asked William what he plans to do next he would genuinely tell you he has got no firm idea,” The Daily Express quoted a source as saying.

“He could well stay in the military in some capacity. He has said publicly that he would like to serve in Afghanistan. That certainly hasn’t been ruled out,” the source added.

A St James’s Palace spokesman said: “It is too early to know what Prince William’s plans are after he has served a tour of duty with the search-and-rescue force. Many options will be open to him at the end of his tour.” (ANI)

Prince William’s girlfriend wants to move on from ‘boring’ family job

London, July 12 (ANI): Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton has had enough of putting in long hours working for her parents’ business Party Pieces and she now wants to explore new horizons as she is looking for more challenging employment.

Kate has been running the company’s website ever since she was accused of being work shy and unwilling to commit herself to a real job while she waited for her Royal beau to finish his military training.

But now, Kate has admitted to a close friend that she has begun to find her current job a little boring” and wants to find a job that will “stretch her mind”.

She has spent the past few months working hard in developing Party Pieces’ website and photographing the new products that have been added to its range of party paraphernalia.

And she is now thinking that there is not much else for her to do at the company’s head quarters close to the Middleton family home in Berkshire.

“Kate is really grateful to her parents for providing a safe haven and something to do when she was under pressure – she was really upset when people called her Waitie Katie,” the Daily Express quoted one of her friends as saying.

The pal added: “But now she feels like doing something new, maybe not even in this country.”

It has already been reported that Kate, 27, is considering using the time that William is occupied with his military career by seeking her own vocational break in America.

“She wants to expand her horizons and feels this is the time to do it, when she has few other responsibilities. She wants to experience new things before the time comes when she won’t be able to have any sort of serious life,” said a pal.

Kate has long been interested in fashion and photography and has a mentor in one of the biggest movers in US fashion, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue.

Wintour has encouraged her to get a few months’ experience learning about the industry in New York.

But in the mean time, Kate has to continue to concentrate on her job with Party Pieces. (ANI)

The Cardiff-based firm hopes that this strategy will make real contenders stand out.

“Applicants will have to be creative and to the point – they’re the qualities we are looking for,” the Sun quoted Teimlo boss Phil Terrett as saying. (ANI)

More than a third of men still think housework is women’s job

London, June 20 (ANI): More than a third of men still believe that housework is a job for the ladies, a new study has found.

The survey by cleaning experts Vileda of 1,853 men found although fathers and married men are the laziest, more than 70 per cent of all men do very little cleaning.

Another 38 per cent think domestic duties should naturally fall to women, reports The Daily Express.

Vileda spokesperson Lindsey Taylor added: “We were surprised to learn that the age-old opinions about who is responsible for the running of the home still hold weight with many men.

“We are supposed to be in an age of the ‘new man’ – but the men’s answers to our survey tell a very different story.”

When it came to women, the study revealed that two thirds of ladies believe that the extra pressures exerted by the credit crunch are actually turning their men into domestic gods.

Three-quarters said their men now clean the house more than they did six months ago. (ANI)

Carlo Ancelotti confirms he’ll take up Chelsea job

London, May 18 (ANI): Carlo Ancelotti has announced that he will take over as Chelsea’s manager this summer.

An official confirmation is likely to come this week-as soon as AC Milan decides on his successor.

According to The Sun, Ancelotti informed Roman Abramovich about his decision on Saturday.

It followed with Milan’s 2-1 defeat by Udinese on Saturday evening that confirmed Jose Mourinho’s Inter as champions.

Ancelotti met with club directors, including vice-president Adriano Galliani, after the Udinese defeat.

It was agreed that Ancelotti, whose eight-year term at the San Siro was over, could leave for Stamford Bridge with Milan’s blessing.

Former Holland and Milan striker Marco Van Basten, who recently quit as Ajax boss, is in talks to take over from Ancelotti.

Earlier, it was reported that Guus Hiddink’s appointment was never anything other than in a caretaker role for Blues.

A four-year contract worth 22 million pounds was readied a month ago, and will be signed after Ancelotti undergoes a medical.

Ancelotti made up his mind to take the Blues job after Milan president Silvio Berlusconi blamed him for failing to land the title. (ANI)

Parton thinks Witherspoon needs a “big ol’ boob job” to play her

London, May 7 (ANI): Voluptuous singer Dolly Parton thinks Reese Witherspoon needs a “big ol’ boob job” to play her in a new biopic.

While expressing her surprise on reports suggesting that the petite actress is being linked with playing her in a planned movie, Parton jokingly said: “We’d have to get her a big ol’ boob job.”

A biographical film is one of a string of new projects for the 63-year-old, reports The Daily Express.

Brit girl, 17, gets boob job to deal with stress

London, April 26 (ANI): A 17-year-old girl, who could not take the pressure of having small breasts, has got a 4,000-pound boob job done on the NHS.

Amanda Ryan was jealous of her school pals’ bigger busts and she was just 16 when she decided to go under the knife, even though her body was not fully developed.

Girls under 18 are usually not allowed to have the operation, but after looking at how the stress of being flat-chested was making Amanda grumpy, a counsellor at her health centre suggested her to get boob job done.

However, now she wishes it had never been done as she has been plagued by problems ever since.

“It is worryingly easy to get a free boob job at an age when you might not be ready for it,” News of the World quoted her as saying.

“If I could advise anyone, I would tell them to wait until they are at least 18. You aren’t ready for it at such a young age,” she added.

Campaign group TaxPayers’ Alliance hit out at the decision.

Spokeswoman Susie Squire said: “The NHS is struggling to provide basic and life-saving surgery.

“Cancer drugs should always come above boob jobs. Some serious questions need to be asked about the spending priorities of this NHS trust.”(ANI)

BT says report of 10,000 job cuts “speculation”

LONDON, April 12 (Reuters) – Britain’s BT Group (BT.L) said a full update regarding any further job cuts would be given with its full-year results next month, dismissing a Sunday newspaper report citing 10,000 job losses as speculation.

The Sunday Times said the cuts would come on top of the 10,000 jobs already lost over the group’s last financial year.

The paper also said the company will announce provisions of 1.5 billion pounds ($2.21 billion) along with its results, mostly related to contracts agreed at its Global Services unit, which provides IT services to multinational companies. A spokesman for BT described the story as “typical speculation” in advance of the results for the 12 months to end-March, due on May 14.

“The company will provide a full update regarding charges relating to Global Services, the pension scheme, dividends and any restructuring for the year at that time,” he told Reuters.

The group, which employs about 160,000 people, said in January it would take charges of 340 million pounds for one-time growth driver Global Services for the third quarter and warned of more provisions to come. [ID:nLM352532]

Chief Executive Ian Livingstone also said last year that the 10,000 job cuts announced for the 2008/09 financial year were not likely to be a one-off. [ID:nLC728011] ($1=.6789 pounds) (Reporting by Victoria Bryan; editing by Mike Nesbit)

Air India steward loses job for refusing to trim moustache

London, Apr 2 (ANI): An Air India steward was relieved from duties because he declined to trim his moustache even after receiving official warnings.

Joyanth Victor De, 55, who worked as an assistant manager at Air India, was dismissed in September 2000 after he refused to trim his handlebar moustache.

De made an unsuccessful appeal to the Kolkata high court, and then took his case to the Supreme Court, but even there he was not successful.

In his plea, he challenged the government-owned airline’s move contending that he had every right to sport a moustache of his choice, and that it was his “family’s custom and spiritual belief”.

However, his plea was not accepted and judges declared that he should keep the family custom “within the family”.

“When you have joined an organisation, you have to follow the rules,” the Daily Express quoted the judges as saying.

As per the Indian aviation rules, cabin crew should be clean-shaven, except for Sikhs, with “neatly trimmed moustache not beyond the upper lip”.

The Supreme Court dismissed his lawyer’s argument that the Aircraft Act 1953 permitted Sikhs to grow beards and moustaches.

“For the Sikhs, sporting a moustache or beard is an indispensable part of their religion. But not for you,” the court said. (ANI)

New Delhi, Mar 30 (ANI): ‘Sex and the City’ sequel, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth in the lead role, will reportedly be filmed in Britain.

Multifarious important scenes between Sarah Jessica’s character Carrie and Chris Noth’s character Big will be shot in the U.K., reports the China Daily.

“The sequel will include key scenes of Carrie Bradshaw and her husband Big in London, possibly shooting this winter for six weeks,” a source said.

He tells carry everything and she flies out to confront him. After she leaves him she discovers she is pregnant,” the source added.

It was Chris Noth who was in favour of shooting the sequel in London.

“I think it would be a great place to make it,” Noth stated earlier. (ANI)

Mourinho says that he is ‘not after Fergie’s job’

London, Mar.10 (ANI): Inter-Milan football team coach Jose Mourinho has rubbished claims that he is after Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson’s job.

Interviews at the weekend had quoted Mourinho saying he was ready to replace Fergie as United chief and would defeat him in the second leg.

But Mourinho said that he made no such comments.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho’s advisor Eladio Parames told SunSport last night: “Jose did not give an interview or speak with anyone about Alex Ferguson’s job.

“The contents of the article are ridiculous. First, it shows a lack of respect to Sir Alex, whom Jose is a great admirer of and believes will manage Manchester United for many years to come. “Jose has a deal with Inter, which he plans to honour,” he added.

“And it shows a lack of respect to Manchester United in a week in which Inter are preparing to face them in an important Champions League match,” Parames said. (ANI)

WAG Nicola McLean bags job as football expert

London, March 7 (ANI): WAG Nicola McLean has bagged herself a job as a football expert on The Sports Bar Show.

The “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!” star will present the show, along with former footballer Jason Cundy and sports fan Andy Goldstein.

TalkSPORT bosses said they had been on a look out for “an outspoken female co-presenter” with a sense of humour and thorough knowledge of football, and that the model “fitted the bill perfectly”.

The 27-year-old had sparked speculations on how she managed to land with the top job but the blonde insisted her relationship with Peterborough United defender Tommy Williams had taught her enough to fit the criteria.

“I’m super excited to co-present The Sports Bar,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“Having dated a footballer for five years, I know everything there is to know about the game and will give as good as the male presenters,” she added. (ANI)
