Germany stick with Klose for opener

(Reuters) – Germany coach Joachim Loew stuck with out-of-form striker Miroslav Klose for the team’s opening World Cup Group D game against Australia on Sunday.

Sports

He also went for youth over experience on the right wing, giving 20-year-old Thomas Mueller his third cap ahead of 26-year-old Piotr Trochowski.

Klose, who was top scorer at the 2006 World Cup with five goals having finished second with five at the 2002 tournament, only netted three times for Bayern Munich last season.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek left Harry Kewell on the bench and gave Richard Garcia, who usually plays as an attacking midfielder, his eighth cap as the lone striker ahead of Josh Kennedy. Garcia has never scored for Australia.

New synthetic corneal implants to restore eyesight in blind patients

Washington, May 21 (ANI): For patients, who have lost their sight in an accident or illness, transplantation of a plastic corneal implant could restore their ability to see.

Dr. Joachim Storsberg of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Potsdam-Golm developed material and production process for a corneal prosthesis made of plastic.

These can help patients who are unable to tolerate donor corneas due to the special circumstances of their disease, or whose donor corneas were likewise destroyed.

The miniscale artificial cornea has to meet almost contradictory specifications: On the one hand, the material should grow firmly together with the cells of the surrounding tissue; on the other hand, no cells should settle in the optical region of the artificial cornea – i.e., the middle – since this would again severely impair the ability to see.

In addition, the outer side of the implant must be able to moisten with tear fluids, otherwise the implant will cloud up on the anterior side. This would consequently require the patient to get a new prosthesis after a relatively brief period of time.

The outer side of the implant must be able to moisten with tear fluid, so that the eyelid can slide across it without friction.

Storsberg found the solution with a hydrophobic polymer material. This material has been in use for a long time in ophthalmology, such as for intraocular lenses.

To meet the various characteristics required, complex development steps were necessary.

The material was thoroughly modified on a polymer-chemical basis, and subsequently re-tested for public approval.

In order to achieve the desired characteristics, the edge of the implant was first coated with various, special polymers.

Then, a special protein was added that contains the specific sequence of a growth factor.

The surrounding natural cells detect this growth factor, are stimulated to propagate and populate the surface of the corneal margin.

Thus, the cells of the surrounding tissue grow with the implant, and the artificial cornea attains stability.

The eye prosthesis evolved jointly with physicians and manufacturers in the EU project, “Artificial Cornea”.

The interdisciplinary research team needed three years to develop the artificial cornea.

Firstly, they sent the chemical-biomimetic coated implant to Dr. Karin Kobuch of the Poliklinik fur Augenheilkunde at the Regensburg University Medical Center and to the medical center at the Technical University of Munich.

The physician examined the artificial corneas in dissected pigs eyes and specialized cell cultures.

Eventually, researchers at University Center for Ophthalmology in Halle (Saale) tested the more complex models in rabbits.

There, the design was further refined— the optics were made smaller, and the implant haptic enlarged in order to maintain a more stable construction.

Miro GmbH manufactured the implant, robin GmbH handled the distribution and sales and supported the specially adapted implantation centers in Europe.

By 2009, a prosthesis was already successfully in use; further implantations are anticipated during the first six months of 2010. (ANI)

German threatens legal challenge over Greek aid -report

BERLIN, April 14 (Reuters) – A German economist plans to launch a legal challenge at the Constitutional Court against the euro zone aid package for Greece agreed by finance ministers at the weekend, a German newspaper reported on Wednesday. Joachim Starbatty, a professor at Tuebingen University, was quoted by the Rheinische Post paper as saying the aid package breached the EU’s Maastricht Treaty.

“We will file a suit at the Constitutional Court against the credit from euro states,” Starbatty told the newspaper, which said he was working with constitutional lawyer Wilhelm Hankel and others.

Separately, Handelsblatt daily quoted an unidentified member of the German cabinet as saying the 30 billion euro aid package for Greece was only a first step and could end up being “at least double the amount”.

The Rheinische Post said Starbatty viewed the aid package as a subsidy which was forbidden as the interest rate offered was under the market rate for Greek bonds.

Starbatty, who had previously threatened to take legal action if aid for Greece was granted, was not immediately available to comment. (Writing by Madeline Chambers, editing by Mike Peacock)

Cindy Crawford blackmailer jailed

A man has been sentenced to two years in jail after trying to extort $US100,000 from Cindy Crawford.

Edis Kayalar, 26, surrendered to German authorities in November after he was charged in Los Angeles with trying to extort money from Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, over a photo of their seven-year-old daughter gagged and bound to a chair.

The photograph was reportedly taken by the girl’s nanny when they were playing “cops and robbers”.

According to court documents in Los Angeles, it fell into the hands of Kayalar – a friend of the nanny’s.

Judge Joachim Spieth noted that Kayalar had admitted asking for the money even though he claimed it was not extortion, rather an appeal “to cover costs” for his attempt to warn Crawford that the nanny was not a good influence.

“The attempted extortion was at an advanced stage and failed,” Judge Spieth told the court in the south-west town of Kirchheim unter Teck.

Kayalar – who is German – contacted Crawford last year and sought to use the photo to get money from the couple, allegedly saying tabloids would pay a lot.

Crawford and Gerber contacted authorities, prompting Los Angeles police to launch a criminal investigation.

Kayalar was arrested in September and deported to Germany for being in the US illegally.

In November, he again phoned Crawford and Gerber and demanded $US100,000, which led to him being charged with extortion.

Cindy Crawford extortionist jailed

London, March 10 (ANI): A German man found guilty of attempting to blackmail supermodel Cindy Crawford has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Edis Kayalar, 26, surrendered to German authorities in November after he was charged in Los Angeles with trying to extort 62,500 pounds from Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber over a controversial photo of their daughter.

The picture showed the girl, who was seven years old at the time, tied to a chair and wearing revealing clothing during a game of ”cops and robbers”, reports the Daily Star.

Gerber is said to have paid Kayalar, an acquaintance of the family”s former nanny, 625 pounds to prevent him from selling the photo to the media.

However, he had to turn to officials at America”s Federal Bureau of Investigation when the crook made further demands for cash.

According to German website Thelocal.de, he was convicted of attempted blackmail at a court in the town of Kirchheim unter Teck, in southern Germany and handed a two-year prison sentence.

Judge Joachim Spieth told the court: “The attempt at blackmail was well-advanced until it failed.” (ANI)

Chennai, Aug 27 (ANI): Multiple Guinness World Record breaker Suresh Joachim of Canada has began karaoke singing continuously for 100 hours as he eyes his 60th Guinness record.

Joachim began his attempt at around 3.35 pm on Wednesday and would end around 7.35 pm on Sunday.

He would be singing in Tamil, English and Tamil languages and would repeat a song in four hours.

“This is my 60th world record item because my aim is to help children from poverty, disease and war around the world. And to be a more world record holder, number one world record holder… in the world more than any other one. That’s my main goal. Recently we made film, that was my 59th world record,” said Joachim.

Joachim is the number one record breaker in Canada and number two in the world. His 59th record was producing a fastest feature film in Tamil language within 11 days, 23 hours and 45 minutes that would be released in September.

Joachim has been breaking records since 1996. His first record was 1,000 consecutive hours of running.

He has been travelling around the world performing much different type of world records. He has drummed continuously for 84 hours in Switzerland, ran on a treadmill for 168 hours to cover 659.27 km in France, bowled for 100 hrs in Canada, carried a 4.5 kg brick in a nominated ungloved hand in an un-cradled downward position for 126.675 km in Australia.

Joachim, born in Sri Lanka, also created a record during his wedding when his nuptial knot was attended by 79 bridesmaids and 47 groomsmen, setting world record for highest number of each at one ceremony.

Some other records have been longest karaoke marathon (25 hours, 49 minutes), longest time spent standing on one foot (76 hours, 40 minutes) and longest continuous ironing (55 hours, five minutes).

Joachim’s next attempt would be pushing car 30 miles in 24 hours in Chennai itself. He has planned to set on a journey for World Peace from Jerusalem in 2011 to Toronto, Canada in 2012. During the tour he would travel 88 major cities across 5 countries, passing a symbolic peace torch. (ANI)

Today’s German kids grow taller than those 30yrs ago did

Washington, June 21 (ANI): Although German children have grown taller than 30 years ago, the height observed during the last century has become slower, say researchers.

Bettina Gohlke and Joachim Woelfle of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Bonn reviewed the current state of knowledge of changes in height and of the physical development of young people.

The found that 7- to 10-year olds are 1 to 1.5 cm taller than in the 1970s, whereas length at birth only slightly increased between 1984 and 1997, by 0.2 cm.

This implies that the rate of growth during childhood has increased. This trend is less marked after puberty.

There has also been little change in physical maturation.

Thus, the age at menarche in young women has remained constant at about 13 years since the early 1960s.

The correlation between growth and socioeconomic status has been well established.

For this reason, body growth is accepted as an important indicator of the socioeconomic conditions of a society. However, the biological mechanism through which this acts is still unknown. (ANI)
