Moily rules out amending Hindu Marriage Act to accommodate Khaps

New Delhi, May 11 (ANI): Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Tuesday ruled out amending the Hindu Marriage Act in order to accommodate the Khap Panchayat”s demands.

“We have suggested to amend the simple marriage act, not the Hindu Marriage Act, he added.”

Moily comment comes just a day after Congress MP and industrialist Navin Jindal said that he had never said anything to support the honour killings committed by the Khap Panchayats.

Earlier, Jindal has reportedly come out in support of the Haryana Khap Panchayats.

It has been reported that Jindal, who is currently abroad, sent a letter to the Khap Panchayats on Sunday affirming his support to them on the issue.

The self-styled Khap Panchayats gathered in Kurukshetra on April 13 and demanded a ban on marriages within the same ””gotra”” or sub caste.

They also protested against a Karnal Sessions Court verdict that awarded death sentences to five accused and a life-term to the leader of a Khap Panchayat for the murder of a newly-married couple.

Representatives of at least 20 Khap Panchayats from Haryana challenged the court ruling and said they would raise money to help the killers of the newly married couple.

They said they wanted the ””Hindu Marriage Act”” to be amended, to include a law that bans marriages within same sub caste or the same village. (ANI)

Shoe hurled at Indian premier during speech

New Delhi – A protestor threw a shoe at Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during an election rally on Sunday, but it landed several feet short of where he was speaking. Singh was addressing the gathering in the western Gujarat state’s main Ahmedabad city and was momentarily distracted from his speech as a security personnel ran towards the spot where the shoe was lying.

The guard then kicked and later carried away the white sneaker which had landed about 20 feet away from the podium.

Singh continued his speech as the man, identified as Hitesh Chauhan, a city-based computer engineer in his mid-20s, was whisked away by security personnel.

Local news channels which broadcast images of the incident said Singh had forgiven the youth and asked police not to press charges against the man.

Police officials told the IANS news agency that Chauhan did not belong to any political group but were questioning him to determine the provocation or issue he wanted to protest about.

The NDTV network quoting police sources said Chauhan wanted to grab media publicity by doing so.

Shoe-throwing has become a preferred form of protest in the run-up to the month-long elections in India which began April 16.

This is the fourth occasion when shoes have been hurled at Indian political leaders in the past few weeks.

It all started on April 7, when a journalist lobbed a shoe at India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram during a press briefing in national capital New Delhi.

Days later, a retired school principal threw footwear at Congress party candidate Navin Jindal during an election rally in the northern state of Haryana.

Subsequently, a slipper was thrown at Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani, by a former party worker.

Sunday’s incident was the latest in the series of shoe-attacks on political leaders – shoes have been hurled at former US president George W Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. (dpa)

Fearing shoe-attack, Modi addresses rally surrounded by a net

Naroda Patiya (Gujarat), Apr 21 (ANI): After a series of shoe attacks on politicians in the past few days, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi created a stir when he addressed an election rally here surrounded by a protective net.

The authorities are taking extra care to protect Modi, so a protective net was put on the stage to safeguard the Gujarat Chief Minister.

The shoe hurling bug has bit the people after an Iraqi journalist hurled shoe at the former US President George W. Bush.

The first Indian politician to get a taste of ‘sole’ was Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Afterwards, a slipper was lobbed at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani while he was addressing a public rally.

There was another reported instance of a disgruntled retired teacher who threw his sandal at Congress leader Navin Jindal at an election rally in Kurukshetra. (ANI)

Jindal advises Cheney to tone down criticism of Obama

Baton Rouge (Louisiana, US), Apr.17 (ANI): Louisiana’s Indian American Governor Bobby Jindal has suggested that former Vice President Dick Cheney should tone down his criticism of President Barack Obama.

Cheney has repeatedly criticized Obama’s national security policy, saying recently on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Obama’s decisions “raise the risk to the American people of another attack.”

Asked to respond to Cheney’s remark during an interview ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Jindal said: “I don’t think we should question President Obama’s patriotism or his intentions.”

“I think Democrat or Republican, we should all agree that our current president, our former president would obviously want to do everything they could to keep us safe,” he said. “Let’s give the new administration a chance. Let’s not question their intentions. Let’s have a real debate on their policies,” Politico quoted Jindal, as saying.

The Republican governor praised Obama for “showing more flexibility when it comes to Iraq than maybe some of the campaign rhetoric suggested.”

“I am, quite honestly, pleasantly surprised. That’s the kind of pragmatism, listening to the commanders on the ground, I think is very important,” Jindal said. (ANI)

BJP, Congress condemn shoe-hurling at Advani

Katni (Madhya Pradesh), Apr 16 (ANI): Political parties on Thursday condemned the shoe-throwing incident at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani during a public rally here in Madhya Pradesh.

Bharatiya Janata Party requested media not to give such incidents undue publicity to prevent it from occurring again.

“I believe some mentally unsound people use these tactics as they believe that electronic media will give this a good publicity. So, if you people (electronic media) behave responsibly these incidents will come down,” said Arun Jaitley, senior BJP leader.

Meanwhile, Congress party also criticised the incident.

“I don’t feel it was the right thing. In politics, you can express your opinion if you have a difference but not by throwing shoes,” said Kapil Sibbal, senior Congress leader.

Thursday’s incident occurred just a couple of days after two shoe-throwing incidents that took place with two Congress leaders.

In the first incident, which took place in New Delhi, an accredited journalist expressed his protest over CBI giving clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in anti-Sikh riots of 1984, by hurling a shoe before Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

In the second incident, a disgruntled retired teacher threw his sandal towards Congress leader Navin Jindal in Kurukshetra over an unattended employment issue of his son. (ANI)

McCain fails to name Palin in GOP star list

New York, Apr.15 (ANI): Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain seems convinced that his former running mate Sarah Palin is not in a list of dynamic governors in the country.

On Monday’s “Tonight Show,” Jay Leno asked the Arizona Senator to name the new guiding lights of the Republican Party, and McCain was quick to rattle off a list of “young, dynamic” governors around the country. alin wasn’t one of them.

McCain singled out Louisana Governor Bobby Jindal, Florida Governor Charlie Christ, Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney.

In case anyone missed his conspicuous omission of Palin, McCain then added, “And I’ve left out somebody’s name, and I’m gonna hear about it.”

Rumors swirled late in the campaign of sniping between McCain’s people and Palin, some of it over 150,000 dollars worth of designer duds, plus hair and make-up, purchased for Palin and her family and paid for out of GOP National Committee coffers.

After news of the pricey makeover leaked out, both camps blamed the other for what amounted to a minor public relations fiasco, timed as it was with the eruption of a full-blown recession and contrasting sharply with Palin’s populist image as an average “hockey mom.”
As recently as early April, Palin’s husband Todd called the decision to spring for the clothes “out of our control,” laying the blame solely on McCain’s strategists in an interview with Men’s Journal.

According to the New York Daily News, there were also reports of McCain aides calling Palin a “diva” and a “whack job” as the campaign wound to an close.

Since the election, Palin has defended herself against charges that her presence sank the Republican ticket. Less than a week after the votes were tallied, she said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, “I think the economic collapse had a heckuva lot more to do with the campaign’s collapse than me personally.”

McCain may not share her conviction. (ANI)

Shoe chucker alarm, police ask Advani supporters to take off shoes

Coimbatore, Apr 14 (ANI): Following a recent shoe-chucking incident in New Delhi, the police, as a precautionary measure, asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers to remove their shoes when they visited the Coimbatore airport to greet their leader L K Advani.

“The police asked us to take off our footwear outside the airport premises as they believed some untoward incident might take place. We strongly condemn this act. Supposing another day, somebody takes off his dress as a mark of protest, will the police ask all men and women to remove their dress and enter a venue?” asked Vinod Kumar, a BJP activist.

They had come to greet Advani at the airport.

Advani was transiting through Coimbatore on his way to Kerala for a whirlwind poll campaign tour.

Recently, there have been a couple of shoe throwing incidents. A retired school principal threw a shoe at Congress MP Navin Jindal in Kurukshetra.

Jindal latest victim of shoe attack, ‘forgives’ attacker

Kurukshetra (Haryana), April 10 (IANS) Millionaire industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal Friday become the latest victim of a shoe attack when a drunk retired school teacher hurled a footwear at him inside the Congress party office in this Haryana town. Jindal said he had ‘forgiven’ the attacker.

‘Personally, I have forgiven that man but I think there should be some action against such people,’ Jindal told the media in state capital Chandigarh, 80 km from here.

The shoe did not hit Jindal. However, the Haryana Police took the offender, Raj Pal, into custody.

The incident took place at the Congress office here during a meeting of party leaders.

Police officials said the man had been medically examined and was found to be in an inebriated state when he hurled his shoe at Jindal. The provocation behind the incident was not yet clear.

Jindal, who represents the Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha, is seeking re-election from the same constituency.

Jindal wondered how did the man gain entry into the party office. ‘I am sure that he was not a Congress party worker and I do not know how he managed to gain entry inside the premises. He was in an inebriated condition and was continuously murmuring something,’ Jindal said.

Earlier, Congress leaders wanted to complain to the Election Commission against the opposition parties over the incident. But Jindal said he was not complaining, while suggesting that opposition leaders could be behind it.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan, who is the Congress in-charge for Haryana, condemned the show-throwing.

‘Such incidents are not at all good for the health of democracy and we condemn such acts. There should be a legal course of action against the people doing this,’ Hooda said.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) too condemned the incident but blamed the Congress leaders for such incidents.

‘These incidents are a manifestation of the wrong policies of the Congress leadership. This also reflects on the infighting within the Congress. The person who hurled the shoe belongs to a Congress family,’ a spokesman of the INLD said.

The incident comes four days after journalist Jarnail Singh tossed his shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram during a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi to protest the candidatures of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for the Lok Sabha polls. Tytler and Kumar are accused of involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Both were dropped as party candidates for the Lok Sabha polls from Delhi.

Jindal, who represents the Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha, is seeking re-election from the seat.

Assocham study: Companies seeing rural India as potential for revenue growth

According to a recent study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), though there is a noticeable slump in demand for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) in the urban markets, the rising demand in rural areas is attracting manufacturers of consumer products and automobiles, and even organised retail businesses.

The Assocham study titled ‘The Rise of Rural India’ reveals that the global financial meltdown notwithstanding, rural India is being seen as a potential for healthy revenue growth for companies, thanks to a robust demand for products of FMCG, two-wheelers, passenger cars as well as retail sectors.

With a special reference to the FMCG sector, the study noted that a number of FMCG firms, including DCM and ITC, have been witnessing better product demand and higher growth rate in the rural markets vis-à-vis the urban markets.

Commenting on the situation, Assocham president Sajjan Jindal said: “FMCG sector in rural areas is expected to grow by 40 percent as against 25 percent in urban areas.”

Mentioning the reasons for the rise in rural demand, Jindal said: “Rising rural incomes, healthy agriculture growth, boost in demand, rising consumerism across India, better penetration of FMCG products in the rural market are contributing to high growth and rapid expansion of the FMCG industry in rural India.”

Naveen Jindal faces action for election code violation

Kurukshetra, April 7 (IANS) The Haryana police Tuesday registered a case for violation of code of conduct against Congress MP and millionaire industrialist Naveen Jindal in this Haryana town following orders of the Election Commission.

Jindal has been booked under Section 3 of the Haryana Defacement of Public Property Act. He has been accused of unauthorisedly putting up pole hoardings on the Shahbad-Pipli road in this district.

Jindal is the sitting Congress MP from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency and is seeking re-election.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had complained to the poll panel against the illegal hoardings put up by Jindal as part of his campaign.

The case was registered by the police following a complaint by the assistant returning officer of the seat.

In a related development, the Haryana government Tuesday replaced controversial Deputy Commissioner of Panchkula (adjoining Chandigarh) R.K. Kataria following election related complaints.

Kataria, who is the son-in-law of Haryana state Congress president Phool Chand Mullana, was accused of favouring the ruling Congress in his jurisdiction.

Mullana’s hoarding was put up at the religious festival of Navratras at the famous Mata Mansa Devi shrine last week.

Kataria has been replaced by Pankaj Yadav, a Haryana government spokesman said here.
