O’Neal slams allegations he cheated on Fawcett with Stewart

Washington, July 16 (ANI): American actor Ryan O’Neal has slammed allegations that he was having an affair with late actress Farrah Fawcett’s best friend Alana Stewart, while his long-term girlfriend was battling cancer.

Both O’Neal, 68, and Stewart, 64, are said to have grown closer in the last three years after they joined forces to support Fawcett, who was battling anal cancer.

But O’Neal’s estranged son Griffin, who is one of the sources making the sordid claims, said that their friendship took a romantic turn during Fawcett’s final months, before her death on June 25.

“They were sharing a room together,” Contactmusic quoted him as having told In Touch Weekly magazine.

Griffin, 44, also claims that Fawcett’s ageing father, Jim, once walked in on the pair in the bedroom after flying in from Houston, Texas, to visit his ailing daughter.

“It made Jim uncomfortable, so he packed his bags and went home,” he added.

Javier Salazar, a friend of O’Neal and Fawcett’s son Redmond, also made a similar claim.

“Ryan and Alana’s relationship was fishy,” he said.

A former business partner of Fawcett’s also added: “Ryan and Alana are a little too cozy with each other. It is raising eyebrows. They both stayed at Farrah’s (home) in the end.”

Representatives for both O’Neal and Stewart have denied the claims, but have declined to comment further. (ANI)

Honey stolen from Corbett National Park

Nainital, June 23 (ANI): Forest Department officials and rangers of Jim Corbett National Park have arrested three persons on charges of setting fire in the forest for scaring away the bees from their hives and collect honey.

“When our staff members woke up, they saw smoke coming out of the forest. When they went out to check they saw two persons sitting under a tree and another one on the tree, who was extracting honey from the beehive. They then held those persons,” said D S Rawat, Superintendent, Corbett National Park, Ramnagar, Uttarakhand.

Admitting their guilt, one of the arrested persons said that the smoke emitted by the fire would keep the bees at bay and let them collect honey from the hives on treetops.

“We take some green leaves and then light them, after which smoke comes out, which chases the bees away and we take out the honey,” said Lalan, one of the arrested persons.

Officials also recovered three kilograms of fresh honey from the nabbed persons.

In the recent past there had been several instances of fire raging in the forestlands posing a grave threat to the flora and fauna of the famed Jim Corbett National Park. (ANI)

Tennis star Dokic says her father abused her

Sydney, May 4 (ANI): Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic has said that her father, Damir, physically abused her during their tumultuous relationship.

Dokic, who is estranged from her father, told how she had fled from her family in 2002 to escape the violence.

In an exclusive interview with the Fairfax magazine Sport and Style, Dokic said: “I’ve been through a lot worse than anybody on the tour. I can say that with confidence. When you go through stuff like that, playing a tennis match is a pretty easy thing to do. … When I win today it’s so much more satisfying.”

After a rocky relationship with Australian tennis fans, Dokic won back the nation with her feisty performance in the Australian Open this year when she reached the quarterfinals after having to rely on a wildcard for entry.

Dokic, 26, went through years of mental turmoil after packing her bags and fleeing what she called “the situation”.

“There was a period where there was nothing that could make me happy … I wanted somebody’s else’s life.”

Dokic has the support of another tennis player, Mary Pierce, who also suffered at the hands of her father, Jim. However, while Pierce has the support of her mother, Dokic was alone.

Dokic gave credit to her boyfriend, Tin Bikic, for helping her recover.

“Whatever has happened, good or bad, will always stay there. It makes you what you are. But I think it’s a little bit selfish [to feel sorry for yourself] … you see a person in a wheelchair and you can’t help feel, ‘Well I’m pretty lucky to be here … we are healthy, we still have our lives ahead of us … Then you feel lucky,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her, as saying.

Damir Dokic hung up when contacted by the Herald. (ANI)

Jim Carrey loves Bikram yoga because of lover’s toned butt!

New Delhi, Apr 3 (ANI): Jim Carrey has become a huge fan of Bikram yoga, courtesy her girlfriend Jenny McCarthy’s toned bottom.

The actor is absolutely in love with the Bikram yoga – despite having never tried it himself – because he can’t get enough of the 36-year-old former Playboy model’s toned derriere, reports the China Daily.

“Jim is absolutely in love with Bikram yoga and he’s never tried it, strictly on the fact he loves the way my butt looks, although he would love me, I think, at 250lbs,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy, who has dated the comic actor for three years, has admitted that she works hard to keep in shape.

“I do 90 minutes a day. That’s Bikram yoga and also healthy food,” McCarthy said.

However, living with Carrey is causing her healthy-eating regime to suffer because he is trying to out on weight for upcoming movie ‘The Three Stooges’, where he will play overweight comedian Curly Howard.

She told Access Hollywood : “He said, ‘You know, I’m going to have to gain 40 or 50 pounds for this role.’ And I said, ‘Oh my god! I get to be dating Curly!’ That is the greatest thing ever.

“I hope I don’t have sympathy weight because he’s going to be eating donuts and I’m going to be going, ‘Ooohhh!’ Especially during PMS,” she added. (ANI)

Jim Carrey’s girlfriend worries about joining him on weight-gaining spree

Washington, Apr 2 (ANI): Jim Carrey’s girlfriend Jenny McCarthy is fearing that she might accompany her beau on his doughnut eating spree, while he works towards gaining weight for his new chubby role in ‘Three Stooges’.

Carrey will be playing the role of Curly, and his actress-cum-model girlfriend has confirmed that the comic is preparing to get “in shape” to play the larger-than-life Stooge.

And the ‘Mask’ star has warned his toned girlfriend to be prepared to date a bigger Jim.

“He said, ‘You know, I’m going to have to gain 40 to 50 pounds for this role,’” Contactmusic quoted McCarthy as telling news show Access Hollywood.

However, she is thrilled about dating Curly.

“I said, ‘Oh my God! I get to be dating Curly! That is the greatest thing ever,” she said.

However, the only thing that is worrying the actress is that she may join Carrey on his binges.

“I hope I don’t have sympathy weight – he’s going to be eating doughnuts,” she said.

In ‘Three Stooges’, Carrey will be starring alongside Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro. (ANI)

Jim Carrey does saucy web dance show for lover Jenny McCarthy

London, Jan 15 (ANI): Comedian Jim Carrey’s lover Jenny McCarthy has revealed that whenever the ‘Yes Man’ star is away from home on shoots, he would perform saucy dance routines for her through the webcam.

McCarthy, 36, says that even though most of 46-year-old Carrey’s moves get the audience laughing, she on the hand finds that his kinky moves sets her pulse racing.

“I haven’t done any dancing, but I make him do that! It’s nice!” the Sun quoted her as telling OK! magazine.

“With the iChat, we’re always afraid that there’s a third party watching! We’re a little bit careful, but it’s a great way to have that face-to-face connection!

“I go online and check him out. I tell him his outfit looks cute!” she added.

The actress also put down the notion that she and Carrey, who are both known for their work in comedy, do not have serious moments in their lives.

“It’s not that we are that funny – like ‘ha, ha, ha’ when we are with each other,” she said.

“I think that’s because we have to do that so often – Jim now more than me. I’m a little more serious now with my work. We talk about real issues,” she added. (ANI)

Robot to make computing lessons more fun for Brit school kids

London, Jan 8 (ANI): Brit schools are looking into the possibility of using humanoid robots to teach their students by the end of the year, in a bid to make computing lessons more fun.

The deal, which is about to be signed between British design company Kablamm and hundreds of secondary schools, will involve schools buying the latest MechRC robots.

The robotic gadget, designed by academics from the University of Reading, can easily be programmed by children to move around, dance, play football or even complete an assault course.

Kablamm started selling the 400 pounds robot to gadget fans three months ago, but this year hopes to transform the grown-up toy into a fully-fledged education aid.

“I am really, really excited about this going into most secondary schools in the country. We need to get kids excited not just in robotics but also in technology and maths in general,” the Telegraph quoted Jim Wyatt, the creative director, as saying.

“That’s what the UK has traditionally been so strong in – coming up with ideas and making technology accessible. We need to educate another generation to do this,” he said.

Though some schools are already using NXT, a robot made by the Lego toy company, in ICT lessons, the MechRC will be the first humanoid robot to be used in British schools.

Kat Nilsson, Contemporary Science Manager, at the Science Museum in London, is very much in favour of the idea.

“It’s always the humanoid robots that connect with people. They really show the imagination and precision involved in engineering,” Nilsson said.

“In the classroom mechanics can seem dry and abstract, but when a robot is involved it’s like giving a child a cartoon character to interact with,” Nilsson added.

The battery-operated robot, which can do a back flip, is programmed via a computer, and students have to programme each of the 17 joints to make sure the robot does not fall over and moves smoothly. (ANI)

Jeb Bush won”t run for the U.S. Senate

Washington, Jan.7 (ANI): US President George W Bush’s younger brother and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has ruled out a bid for a Senate seat, saying that the time is not right for running for elective office.

Jeb Bush said that he would instead work from outside elected office to rebuild the Republican Party.

“While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office,” Fox News quoted him, as saying.

President Bush, and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, both seemed to send signals encouraging him to make a run.

“I”d like to see him run. I”d like to see him be president someday,” the senior Mr. Bush told “Fox News Sunday” last weekend.

But the former governor said he wants to focus on education, including working to build “a system that lessens our populace”s dependence on government.”

In his statement, the former governor did not mention his brother, the current president, but did praise President-elect Barack Obama, saying he “ran a tremendous campaign and I am proud to call him my president.”

“I am confident Republicans will find productive ways to work together with the new administration to advance reforms both sides of the aisle can support,” he added.

Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer said that although he was disappointed in Mr. Bush”s decision not to run for the Senate, the party would present a strong candidate in 2010.

While in office, Jeb Bush, 55, earned praise among conservatives for cutting taxes, trimming the state work force, pushing for school choice and moving to privatize many state services.

Analysts credit his popularity among moderates to the boost in test scores among minority students and his success in leading the Sunshine State through two hurricanes.

Since leaving office in 2007 after two terms, Bush has kept a relatively low public profile, writing an occasional column or giving interviews. (ANI)

Deaf children given implants as babies can learn to speak

London, January 5 (ANI): Experiments conducted by Australian researchers have shown that brain activity in deaf cats develops normally if they are fitted with a cochlear implant shortly after birth.

Rob Shephard, of the Bionic Ear Institute in Melbourne, says that this finding may explain how deaf children given implants as babies can learn to speak almost as well as hearing children.

The researcher points out that in animals with normal hearing, sound vibrates hair cells in the inner ear and thereby trigger neurons to send impulses to the brain.

However, according to him, these hair cells are often defective in deaf animals, and cochlear implants compensate by stimulating neurons directly.

With a view to finding out how this artificial stimulation affects the brain, Shephard and his colleagues recorded electrical activity in the cortex of 17 8-month-old cats that were deaf from birth.

The researchers activated each cat”s cochlear implant while monitoring their brains, reports New Scientist magazine.

They said that 10 of the cats had received the implant relatively recently, and their electrical activity was “completely scrambled”, indicating that they did not perceive sound coherently: normal cortex activity is key to perceiving sound and, in humans, to developing speech.

However, in the seven cats that received implants at 8 weeks old, brain activity was similar to that in hearing cats.

A research article in the Journal of Comparative Neurology highlights the fact that some deaf people consider it to be unethical to operate on deaf babies, who would otherwise learn sign language.

But neurologist Jim Pickles, of the University of Queensland, says the latest work “increases the weight of evidence to implant children early”. (ANI)

Gordon Brown’s favorite dish is mixture of mashed potato and cabbage!

London, Jan 4 (ANI): Gordon Brown is certainly a health freak, for when asked to nominate his favourite dish, the UK leader plumped for Rumbledethumps – a gloopy mixture of mashed potato and cabbage.

The Prime Minister is among a number of politicians who have named their favourite foods for a fundraising book in aid of the Donaldson”s school for the deaf in Edinburgh.

Brown has claimed in the book that he got a taste for the dish as a boy, recalling how he would come back from watching Raith Rovers matches to find the dish on the table, prepared by his mother, reports the Scotsman.

The book reveals that his ‘economical’ eating habits are shared by his fellow politicians too.

In keeping with the tough times, Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy claims that the meal he yearns for more than any is a bowl of “hearty lentil broth”.

Keeping up the spartan theme, First Minister Alex Salmond claims his favourite dish is Cullen Skink, the soup traditionally made from smoked haddock, potatoes and onions. (ANI)
