Eurofighter woos buyers for 10 bln euro order

(Reuters) – Defense firms have moved to kickstart negotiations over the Eurofighter Typhoon by asking Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain to invest an estimated 10 billion euros ($13.42 billion) in the next wave of jet fighter production.

Deals | Germany | Italy

A spokesman for a consortium of BAE Systems, EADS and Finmeccanica told Reuters it had submitted an offer at the end of May — a move that analysts say could trigger a tug of war over dwindling Defense budgets during a European sovereign debt crisis.

The spokesman declined to disclose the value of the offer, which covers 124 planes, but Defense industry sources at the Berlin Air Show said it was around 10 billion euros.

Eurofighter says a decision on whether to build the planes would be needed within a year in order to avoid a production gap it believes would be damaging for exports and hit jobs.

The climate for talks is difficult, however, after Germany announced tough Defense cuts and Britain promised to defer any major spending decisions until after a strategic Defense review.

Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain have so far taken delivery of a combined 222 Eurofighter Typhoons out of the 620 they originally ordered.

The original order spanned three separate tranches. But the third and final production run of 236 planes had to be split up last year when buyers could only agree to purchase 112 aircraft.

Any decision to cancel the rest is likely to trigger calls for compensation as well as intensive lobbying over the fate of 100,000 jobs tied up directly or indirectly in the project.

Besides domestic contracts, Saudi Arabia has ordered 70 of the planes and 15 have been sold to Austria.

The Typhoon is competing in a number of contests against rival models such as the French Rafale, Swedish Gripen or Boeing’s F-18.

Switzerland has renewed interest in updating its fighter fleet after suspending a competition last year and could make a decision later in 2010, air show delegates said.

Other nearby countries showing interest in deals or evaluating their positions include Serbia, Romania and Turkey.

Middle East and Asian demand has been strong as countries face new threats or pressure to renew aging fleets.

But Brazil, actively courted by France as the first foreign buyer for its Dassault-built Rafale, has so far delayed a decision and may have to postpone until after October 3 elections.

“We are worried; nothing is happening at the moment,” a French industrial source said of the competition, in which Eurofighter is not represented.

Photos of Air Force One’s NYC flyover will not be released

New York, May 6 (ANI): Pictures of an ill-conceived photo-operation, designed to capture one of the president’s planes near national landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, will be kept under wraps.

As part of a photo-op carried out by the US Defense Department, a 747 and supersonic jet fighter might have buzzed the Manhattan skyline, and panicked New Yorkers on April 27, fearful of a terrorist attack reminiscent of 9/11.

But the White House has decided to take a step to ensure that the operation has never happened.

The photos of Air Force One’s low flyover of Manhattan will not be released.

The CBS News quoted an administration official as saying “we have no plans to release them.”

The operation, which included an accompanying Air Force jet fighter, cost 328,000 dollars.

Obama was reportedly furious over the incident and ordered an internal review. (ANI)

US Congress may prohibit spending on Pak F-16s to keep India happy

Washington, Apr. 4 (ANI): The US Congress is moving toward imposing benchmarks for providing the Pakistani government with billions of dollars of U.S. military assistance, among them being prohibiting additional U.S. spending on Pakistan’s F-16 jet fighter fleet, which the Bush administration agreed to upgrade.

Lawmakers have argued that the planes are part of Pakistan’s defense strategy against neighboring India but that they have little use in counter-insurgency efforts against al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

The proposed restrictions, introduced in House legislation Thursday, have made both the White House and the Pakistani government uneasy.

The bill sponsored by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard L. Berman (Democrat-California) would authorize three billion dollars in aid to train and equip the Pakistani military over the next five years, along with 7.5 billion dollars in economic and development assistance.

It would also limit the kinds of military equipment Pakistan could receive and the ways in which it could be used, and require regular audits and presidential certification of counterinsurgency progress.

A bill with similar aid amounts is being drafted in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, although Senate discussions with the White House on benchmark provisions are ongoing.

Introduction of that legislation is not planned until after the two-week congressional recess.

The bill would set up a program to monitor Pakistani progress in a number of areas, including defeating extremists and protecting human rights, and require Obama to provide specifics underlying his own assessments.

President Obama has said that the United States must “demonstrate through deeds as well as words a commitment [to Pakistan] that is enduring.”

He has called on Congress to pass the still-unseen Senate bill. t the same time, Obama pledged, there would be no “blank check.”

Recalling “mixed results” from previous billions in aid, he said that “Pakistan must demonstrate its commitment to rooting out al-Qaeda and the violent extremists within its borders.”

But the White House and U.S. military commanders, citing Pakistani political sensitivities and the need for flexibility, would like to set their own metrics. (ANI)

F-16 aircraft crash averted during Aero India 2009

Bangalore, Feb. 15 (ANI): A great panic swept through the Yelhanka air base during Aero India Show 2009 when the tyre of American superlative combat F-16 aircraft burst while landing.

The F-16 aircraft bearing number IN3016 had touched down when the startling incident took place.

However, no major casualty was caused by this mishap, often witnessed in the aviation scenario, particularly by the combat aircraft.

It was the same aircraft in which Indian Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra had ‘flown’ on Thursday.

The lightweight jet fighter F-16, which is equipped with many advanced features, has been one of the major attractions during Asia’s largest air show, at the five-day Aero India 2009. (ANI)
