Beatles’ 1966 ‘Jesus’ press conference tape up for grabs

London, May 12 (ANI): An audio recording of the Beatles from 1966, in which John Lennon is asked about his comment that the band was more popular than Jesus, is expected to sell for about 13,400 pounds at auction.

Auction house Bonhams & Butterfields said the 14 minute reel-to-reel tape recording was the only known surviving audio record of the 1966 press conference by the Fab Four at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto.

Bonhams said journalists also had lots of questions about Lennon’s controversial “Jesus” remark months earlier, and that Vietnam and the generation gap were also discussed.

The press conference was well reported at the time but there is no known television or audio record.

“We do know what they said that day. We have just never heard it,” the Telegraph quoted Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment memorabilia at Bonhams & Butterfields, as saying.

She said the tapes were made by a young photojournalist and Beatles fan who attended the press conference.

“He tried to sell them in 1966, but no-one thought they were important,” Barrett stated.

The two reels lay in a drawer for over 40 years but now carry an estimated price of 13,400 pounds to 16,750 pounds and are among the most expensive items at the June 13 auction in Los Angeles. (ANI)

Outrage over Oklahoma church’s display of Jesus with penis

Washington, April 17 (ANI): Churchgoers in Oklahoma are reportedly outraged with a crucifix in a Catholic church that they say shows an image of genitalia on Jesus.

According to NewsOk.com, the crucifix, which hangs above the church’s main altar, has caused a deep divide among parishioners at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

“There are a couple people who have left the parish,” Fox News quoted Rev. Philip Seeton as telling the website.

“There are people in the parish who don’t like it and have stayed,” he said.

Some parishioners say that they have a problem with what appears to be a large penis covering Jesus’ abdominal area.

But that portion, Seeton told the website, is meant to be Jesus’ abdomen “showing distension” — and not a penis.

“I’ve had people who have vocally said that that’s what they see there,” Seeton said.

“I’ve had people who have been just as vocal who said that’s not what they’re seeing there,” he added.

Calls to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Warr Acres, Okla., were not immediately returned.

A local artist who designed the crucifix had no comment. (ANI)

The significance of Easter Bunny on Easter

While the Bible has no mention of Easter bunnies and eggs, Easter has been synonymous with the long-eared, cotton-tailed creature and kids painting eggs or hunting for baskets overflowing with scrumptious Easter goodies. And it’s now that scientists have revealed the origin of this tradition.

The researchers have said that bunnies, eggs, Easter gifts and fluffy, yellow chicks in gardening hats all stem from pagan roots.

They were incorporated into the celebration of Easter separately from the Christian tradition of honouring the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

According to University of Florida”s Center for Children”s Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration-and the Easter bunny- can be traced back to 13th century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses.

The Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honour on the Vernal Equinox.

Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate, reports Discovery News.

Spring also symbolized new life and rebirth, while eggs were an ancient symbol of fertility.

History.com said that the Easter eggs association with Jesus” resurrection came much later when Roman Catholicism became the dominant religion in Germany in the 15th century and merged with already ingrained pagan beliefs.

The first Easter bunny legend was documented in the 1500s.

By 1680, the first story about a rabbit laying eggs and hiding them in a garden was published.

And these legends came to the United States in the 1700s when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, said the Center for Children”s Literature and Culture.

The tradition of making nests for the rabbit to lay its eggs in soon followed.

Eventually, nests became decorated baskets and colourful eggs were swapped for candy, treats and other small gifts.

Exhibition glorifying female Palestinian bombers generates outrage

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Organizers of an art exhibition had to take down portraits depicting female Palestinian suicide bombers as the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus after the families of those killed or wounded in the attacks protested.

The controversial exhibition, which featured the work of artists Galina Bleich and Liliah Check, displayed a series of paintings of the bombers rendered to look like Renaissance-era portraits of Catholic saints, The Jerusalem Post reports.

The exhibition opened at Sokolov House press center in Tel Aviv agreed to take the portraits down, but another section – sand and dirt that had been taken from the scenes of the bombings and spread out across canvas – remained on the gallery’s walls.

The victims’ families expressed outrage over both the content of the exhibition and the fact that the headquarters of the Israeli Journalists Association, had agreed to show it.

Dalit Levy, whose 17-year-old stepdaughter Rachel was killed in a suicide bombing as she shopped at the Supersol supermarket in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Hayovel, arrived outside Sokolov House on Thursday afternoon with an Israeli flag draped over her shoulders.

“You want art?” she asked a group of reporters who had gathered around her. “Here’s art!” she said, before spilling a can of red paint next to a photograph of her stepdaughter and two memorial candles. “This is the blood of our children!”

Almagor, The Association for Terror Victims in Israel, also issued a stern response to the exhibit, and threatened to take legal action if the portraits were not taken down.

“We’ve contacted the attorney-general and asked him to take legal action against the exhibition’s representatives. Any action that strengthens or praises the murderous acts of terrorism is violating the law and hurting the general public by legitimising the murders,” he said.

Indor said his group was worried the artists would try to show the exhibit elsewhere.

“We’ve been in contact with the artists, and made it clear that we want them to add information to the material so that people will understand that this is not promoting terrorism, but against it,” he said. (ANI)

Jacko once got so doped up, he couldn’t put fork in his mouth: Ex manager

London, July 1 (ANI): Michael Jackson once got so doped up that he could not lift a fork to his mouth at dinner, according to his former manager.

Dieter Wiesner, who managed the King of Pop, has claimed that Jackson plunged deeper into drug addiction as child sex abuse allegations piled up.

Wiesner said that the late ‘Thriller’ star’s drug use spun out of control in the wake of Martin Bashir’s 2003 TV documentary, when he was asked about sleeping with kids.

“It broke him. It killed him. He took a long time to die, but it started that night,” the Sun quoted Wiesner as saying.

“Previously the drugs were a crutch, but after that they became a necessity. They got him through his days and insomnia-riddled nights. And the people who gave them knew what they were doing. They should never have been around him.

“Those drugs and the ‘Jesus Juice’ – Michael’s name for wine – began to claim him. I’ll never forget the day at Neverland when he walked into the kitchen to eat. He was off his face, he couldn’t even bring the fork up to his mouth.

“It was like watching a clumsy robot. There he was, one of the most talented guys on the planet, unable to even eat because he was so doped up,” Wiesner added. (ANI)
