Jesus “JC” Christ coming to Comedy Central

New York, May 8 (ANI): American cable and satellite television channel Comedy Central has announced that it is developing a half-hour animated show about a character named Jesus “JC” Christ.

The show will be about “JC” wanting to escape his dad”s considerable shadow to chill out in New York as a regular guy, only to find things have changed on earth over the last 2,000 years, reports the New York Post.

The announcement comes less than a month after Comedy Central”s controversial decision to censor an animated image of the Prophet Mohammed during an episode of “South Park”. (ANI)

Christian militia planned to ‘wage war’ on government

Nine members of a Christian militia have been charged with plotting to kill police and trying to wage war on the United States government.

After FBI raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, nine members of the militia called Hutaree have been charged with seditious conspiracy, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and teaching the use of explosive materials.

Prosecutors allege they were just days away from planning to kill a policeman and then launching an attack at his funeral with homemade bombs.

Court documents said the group would then retreat to one of several “rally points” to “wage war against the government and be prepared to defend in depth with trip-wired and command-detonated anti-personnel improvised explosive devices, ambushes and prepared fighting positions”.

Prosecutors said Hutaree considered police officers to be “foot soldiers” of the US government and counted among their enemies anyone who did not share their beliefs or was participating in the “new world order”.

The Hutaree website says it is “preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive”.

They had allegedly been in training since at least 2008.

An FBI spokesman says the bureau takes extremist groups seriously.

The accused face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

First lesbian bishop consecrated with Episcopal Church”s approval

London, Mar 19 (ANI): In what has been seen as a move likely to worsen divisions over homosexuality, an Anglican church in the US has approved the consecration of its first openly lesbian bishop.

The Episcopal Church of the USA, the most liberal province within the Anglican Communion, had been under pressure not to allow the Rev Mary Glasspool to become Assistant Bishop of Los Angeles.

Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, had warned its leaders personally not to take any decisions that would deepen the crisis over sexuality within the worldwide church.

But bishops and dioceses across the national church have now approved the consecration of Glasspool, after she was elected last year, and a ceremony has been scheduled for May 15.

She and the Rev Diane Bruce will become the first women bishops in Los Angeles.

Glasspool, a Canon in the Diocese of Maryland, has been with her female partner since 1988.

“I am also aware that not everyone rejoices in this election and consent, and will work, pray, and continue to extend my own hands and heart to bridge those gaps, and strengthen the bonds of affection among all people, in the Name of Jesus Christ,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

The Rt Rev Jon Bruno, the Bishop of Los Angeles, said the move showed there were no barriers within the Episcopal Church based on “gender and sexual orientation”.

“With the election of the Reverend Mary Glasspool, a partnered lesbian, as a Bishop in Los Angeles in The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion reaches another decisive moment,” the Most Rev Peter Jensen, the Archbishop of Sydney, said.

“It is now absolutely clear to all that the national Church itself has formally committed itself to a pattern of life which is contrary to Scripture.

“The election of Bishop Robinson in 2003 was not an aberration to be corrected in due course. It was a true indication of the heart of the Church and the direction of its affairs,” he stated.

He claimed that traditionalists who have “patiently” remained within the Episcopal Church in recent years are likely to “distance themselves from those who have chosen to walk in the path of disobedience”. (ANI)

Hindus and Jews ask Pope to uphold ‘Christian values’ on Roma ‘apartheid’ in Europe

Nevada (US), March 6 (ANI): Hindus and Jews have portrayed His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI as ‘un-Christian’ for not strongly supporting the cause of the Roma who face ‘apartheid” conditions in Europe.

Rajan Zed, acclaimed Hindu statesman; and Rabbi Jonathan B. Freirich, prominent Jewish leader in Nevada and California in USA; in a statement issued in Nevada today, said that the condition of the Roma had most of the signs of ‘apartheid’ and that it was happening right under the Pope’s nose in Europe.

Hindus & Jews had repeatedly appealed him in the past to openly embrace the Roma cause and come up with a White Paper on their plight but without any success.

Zed and Rabbi Freirich quoted from The Bible: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36).”

“The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel (Psalm 147:2).” “For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast (Jeremiah 30:17).”

“Behold, at that time I will deal with all your oppressors. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth (Zephaniah 3:19).” “…let the outcasts of Moab sojourn among you; be a shelter to them from the destroyer… (Isaiah 16:4).” “Whoever says, ‘I am in the light,’ while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness (First Epistle of John 2: 9).”

“…Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another (Gospel According to John 13: 34).”

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, and Jonathan Freirich, argued that Jesus Christ clearly told the world to help the helpless, defenseless and downtrodden and love them, and He showed the way.

The Pope, being the acclaimed representative of God on earth, should raise his voice against continuous Roma maltreatment.

The Pope should act like a shepherd for a shepherd-less flock of Roma, just as Jesus Himself said that He had sheep from other pastures.

The Pope should recognize, acknowledge and affirm the Roma as children of God who deserved to be treated like all other people—as equals.

As the Vicar of Christ, the Pope should offer the Roma protection, compassion, and love. In the case of the Roma, the Pope should act as God wanted him to act, as distinctly defined in The Bible. (ANI)

Exhibition of wooden sculptures in Bhopal

Bhopal, July 8 (ANI): A unique exhibition depicting art in wood attracted hundreds of visitors in Bhopal.

O P Kushwaha, a renowned wood and rock sculptor had crafted these beautiful artifacts. For his artistry, he has been honoured with numerous awards and commendations.

There were sculptures depicting Hindu Gods, Jesus Christ holding a cross and walking, people offering prayers at the Mecca and many other creations depicting the highest degree of craftsmanship on wood.

Most of the visitors admitted that they were amazed to see excellence in carving and finishing on a medium that could be mere wood for the rest of the world.

“The subject matter and the carvings of these paintings are extremely artistic. The finishing is marvellous. After witnessing such artwork it seems that the artist does possess expertise in his work. He has literally toiled and he has done lot of practice before actually carving these paintings (sculpture),” said Suresh, a visitor.

Apart from wooden artifacts and allied carvings, Ramcharitmanas (the great Hindu scripture and poetic classic) on wood was also on display.he master sculptor Kushwaha said that these paintings could last for around 1000 years.

“There are many people who can make paintings on canvas… there are students of fine arts who and other people are involved in canvas paintings but they will not make sculpt or do paintings on wood…the second thing is that these artifacts can last for around 1000 years since they are made on the wood of Saguan (teak tree),” P Kushwaha added.

He further said that he is keen to popularise the wooden art of Madhya Pradesh not only in India but around the world.

Welsh mum finds Jesus looking back at her as she opens Marmite jar

London, May 29 (ANI): A 36-year-old woman in South Wales was surprised when she saw an image resembling Jesus upon opening a jar of Marmite.

Mum of three Claire Allen, of Ystrad, Rhondda, said that she was stunned to see Jesus staring back at her.

She revealed that the blobs of yeast extract under the lid had mysteriously formed the shape of a familiar bearded face.

“I opened the Marmite jar, put it on the breakfast bar and the lid caught my eye,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I just looked at it and immediately thought, ‘That’s Jesus Christ’.

“It wasn’t a new jar, but I had never noticed it before,” she added.

Claire revealed that she also showed the image to her two eldest sons Jamie, 14, and Tomas, 11. I was about to do some Marmite on toast for Robbie’s breakfast when I saw the face,” she said. I showed it to my two eldest boys and straight away they could see a face. They thought it looked like the images of Jesus you see in paintings and stained glass windows,” she added.

Claire and her husband Gareth believe the incident to mean that the son of God is looking out for their family.

She said: “I’m not particularly religious – but we’ve had a tough couple of months and it’s comforting to think that if he is there, he’s watching over us.”

A spokesman for Marmite maker Unilever said: “While we know many people have a Marmite passion, we can’t promise a representation from Jesus in all of our jars.” (ANI)

Jesus has ‘risen’ in Sussex – and he’s wearing baggy jeans!

London, May 14 (ANI): It’s 21st century after all so why Jesus Christ should be left behind. A church in East Sussex has unveiled a new seven foot high statue of a modern day Jesus wearing jeans and a shirt.

Father David Buckley unveiled the 35,000-pound Marcus Cornish statue dubbed “Jesus in jeans” at the Our Lady Immaculate and St Philip Neri Catholic church in Uckfield depicting Christ as a man of the 21st century.

In the statue Christ can be seen wearing jeans and a shirt billowing in the wind while his hair and beard are neatly and fashionably trimmed.
Cornish’s sculpture was funded by money left by Winifred Gregory, 87, a member of the congregation who passed away last year, reports The Telegraph.
Father Buckley said: “You are always looking for new ways to enrich people in the experience of Christianity and it is good people can be open-minded to appreciate it.

“On the continent you often encounter modern representations of Jesus but it is not so common over here. We wanted a figure of Christ not in suffering but dynamic and welcoming.

“We felt this design summed up the spirit and activity of Christ perfectly and I think it speaks for itself.”

Cornish said: “The sculpture is simple and direct and I hope it sums up the feeling that Christ is always with us and that we are not to be afraid.

“His clothing is being blown vigorously to add the sense of him being alive and his strength in defying earthly cares.

“The clothing is loosely contemporary in order to connect Christ to his people now as much as to his past. I hope this sculpture will inspire and communicate in very human terms, reaching out and being relevant to both the congregation and local community.” (ANI)

Klinsmann seeks damages over mock newspaper photo

Klinsmann seeks damages over mock newspaper photo

Berlin – Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann is seeking damages from the Berlin daily taz newspaper following a photo mock-up of him showing in a crucifixion scene, his lawyers said Tuesday. The former Germany international was shown in an Easter edition of the newspaper being crucified on the cross.

In reference to the Monty Python film Life of Brian, in which a young Jewish man is mistaken for Jesus Christ, an accompanying headline read, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” – a song from the 1979 comedy.

“From Germany’s superstar to Bayern’s bogeyman,” read a sub-heading.

Klinsmann has come under pressure at Bayern following a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League last week, a few days after losing 5-1 at Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga.

Hundreds of thousands pilgrims climb hill shrine Malayatoor

Malayatoor (Kerala), April 10 (ANI): On the eve of holy week during lent days, thousands of Christian pilgrims climbed Kerala’s most famous hill shrine Malayatoor Kurisumudi, the only international Pilgrim centre in Asia and fifth in the world, approved by the Vatican.

Despite harsh terrain and bad weather conditions, people from all age groups and religion shared the pain and hardships by carrying the wooden cross that Jesus went through the way to crusification at Mount Calvary.

The climb is quite difficult having rocks and uneven surfaces. But it is the major attraction the pilgrims come for.

According to the church authority, over eight million visit this place every year during this period which lasts till May 31 of this year.

Fr. Rockey Chully, the Chaplain of the St. Thomas International shrine, Kurisumudi, said that lakhs of people carry cross as Jesus carried to the mount and during the entire season to this hill shrine, especially on Good Friday is when the maximum climbs.

Carrying the cross while climbing makes one feel the pain Jesus had felt. Other devotees come to full fill their vow for their near and dear ones.

“It is the fourth year for me climbing this shrine and this year I come for my child’s well-being as I have full faith that all my sufferings will be removed after this”, says a devotee Jacob K.K.

Another devotee from nearby state of Pollachi in Tamil Nadu Mrs. Stella M has been climbing the shrine for the last five years and is happy to have removed her family problems.

“this is my fifth year now and all my family problems have been solved after praying to god, I really love to come every year”

The famed church lies 54 kilometres from Kochi and stands at the top of the Malayatoor Hill, which is 609 metres high.

The church is consecrated to St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ and enshrines a full-size image of St. Thomas.

According to a belief, the footprints of this holy man are engraved in a rock, which is protected here.

Sailing in an Arab merchant vessel, St. Thomas is believed to have landed at Kodungalloor port in Kerala, India in AD 52. It is believed that St. Thomas took the initiative for establishing a Christian community at Malayattoor.

St. Thomas founded seven churches in Kodungalloor, Quilon, Niranam, Nilakkal, Kokkamangalam, Kottakavu and Paalayoor on his journey in Kerala.

He died in 72 A.D. after he was pierced by a lance while praying on St. Thomas Mount, a 91m-high hill 14km southwest of Chennai.

His body was taken to Mylapore and buried in the chapel he had built with his own hands.

“Its been the fourth year for me climbing this shrine and this year I come for my child’s wellbeing as I have full faith that all my sufferings will be removed after this,” said Jacob K.K., a Christian devotee.

“This is my fifth year now and all my family problems have been solved after coming and praying to god, I really love to come every year,” said Stella M, a devotee from Tamil Nadu. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)

Thousands of pilgrims mark Good Friday in Jerusalem

Jerusalem – Thousands of Christian pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem Friday for the traditional procession retracing Jesus Christ’s last steps to his crucifixion along the route known as the Via Dolorosa, in Jerusalem’s Old City. Even before the official procession got underway, several groups walked the route in the early morning, some walking barefoot, others carrying wooden crosses or singing hymns or crying, mingling with Palestinian traders and Jews on their way to the Western Wall.

The Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrow) runs from the Old City’s Lions’ Gate (formerly St Stephen’s Gate) to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christ is believed to have been crucified and buried.

The route has 14 stations, the final five of which are in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which mark events which befell Jesus as he walked to his death.

Although the pilgrims noted each station, they stopped to pray at the 3rd station, which marks where Jesus fell for the first time.

Good Friday being observed today

New Delhi, Apr. 10 (ANI): Good Friday, the crucification of Jesus Christ is being observed by Christians across the world.

Churches and cathedrals across the nation have also organized special prayers and masses.

In Mizoram, after the Holy Thursday, people will be observing Good Friday with a congregation march.

The protestant church and other Christian community started their march at 10 ‘O’ clock on Friday morning.

In Goa, prayers and masses are being organized in all the Churches and Chapels to mark the occasion.

Based on the scriptural details of the Sanhedrin Trial of Jesus, the Crucifixion of Jesus was most probably on a Friday.

The exact year of Good Friday has been estimated as AD 33, by two different groups, and originally as AD 34 by Isaac Newton via the differences between the Biblical and Julian calendars and the crescent of the moon. (ANI)

Easter rituals begin in Rome amid grief for earthquake victims

Vatican City – Pope Benedict XVI in a Holy Thursday Chrism Mass celebrated the first of a series of traditional rituals leading to Easter – a feast tinged with sorrow in Italy this year for the victims of an devastating earthquake.

During the ceremony in St Peter’s Basilica, Benedict blessed holy oils which will be used in Catholic sacraments, including baptisms, confirmations and last rites for the dying.

Some of the oils consecrated this year are destined for parishes in Italy’s central Abruzzo region where by Thursday morning the death toll from Monday’s earthquake stood at 278.

Benedict on Wednesday said he plans to visit the earthquake area “as soon as possible”.

On Thursday evening, the 81-year-old pontiff was scheduled to perform the traditional foot-washing ceremony which commemorates the same gesture carried out by Jesus Christ before his Last Supper.

Benedict is scheduled to preside over the traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) procession in Rome’s Colosseum on Good Friday and an Easter vigil at the Vatican on Saturday.

On Easter Sunday, he is due to celebrate Mass in St Peter’s before delivering his Urbi et Orbi message and blessing “to the city and the world.”

Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is regarded by Christians as their most important religious feast. dpa

German Saint Pius clerics to pray for conversion of Jews

Stuttgart – Clerics of the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) are to continue their Good Friday practice of praying for the conversion of the Jews, a spokesman for the group said Thursday.

SSPX superior Father Franz Schmidberger said the intercession dated back to a Church tradition originating in the fourth century, and was not aimed at provoking or hurting the religious feelings of non-Catholics.

Germany’s Central Committee of Catholics (ZdK) has criticized Pope Benedict XVI’s rewording of the Good Friday intercession, which reads, “Let us also pray for the Jews: That our God and Lord may illuminate their hearts, that they acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Savior of all men.”

The ZdK said these words could be interpreted as a call to convert the Jews.

An SSPX statement said the ZdK was “far from the Holy Scripture” in its criticism.

Although there was no question of forcibly converting non-Christians, a statement on the society’s website said the possibility of conversion should not be ruled out. (dpa)

Melbourne citizens express anger over display of `Naked Woman on Cross’ sculpture before Easter

Melbourne, Apr.8 (ANI): Sculptor Neil Mitchell’s move to display his work “Naked Woman on Cross” in Melbourne ahead of Easter has sparked anger and accusations of mixed messages, reports the Herald Sun.

The 40,000 dollar artwork is being displayed at a Melbourne gallery at the holiest time of the year for Christians, and Mitchell said it was meant to portray women’s suffering.

However, church leaders and art lovers have described it as a desecration of Christian beliefs.

St Michael’s Uniting Church chief Minister Dr Francis McNab said Mitchell’s message had backfired.

“I think it’s supposed to say we have crucified women in society,” Dr McNab said.

“But it’s a shame he chose to sexualise it by the use of a young female. Older women had to suffer longer and much more.

“He takes our focus on to the sexual side of it more than the social commentary.”

Living Way Church Pastor Lanil Gunasekara was outraged by the sculpture.

“It is a blasphemous insult to the image of Jesus Christ who was crucified on the cross,” he said.

“There is something wrong with an artist who produces something so insulting to Christians.”

New White Gallery owner Melanie Thornton said some visitors were dismayed at the aluminium and wood sculpture.

“It is very powerful because it is life-size and displayed on its own,” she said.

Mitchell, known for his sculptures of sporting heroes, defended the work.

“It is the duty of an artist to question society’s beliefs in religion and to test people about those beliefs, which this sculpture will do,” he said.

“I’ve travelled through 35 countries and found down-trodden women in them all.”

Mitchell’s bronzes of Sir Don Bradman, John Landy and Ron Clarke are outside the MCG.

Dr McNab said he did not find the work offensive, “but I wouldn’t go to see it”. (ANI)

‘Palm Sunday’ celebrated in Kerala

Kochi, Apr 6 (ANI): Hundreds of Christians in Kerala commemorated ‘Palm Sunday’, marking the beginning of Holy Week on Sunday.

According to the Bible, ‘Palm Sunday’ is celebrated to mark the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a donkey where the rich and the poor greeted him by waving palm branches, and by covering his path with palm branches and expensive clothes and even flowers.

Immediately following the celebration, Jesus Christ’s journey to the cross began followed by his Last Supper to disciples, and finally his crucifixion.

Commemorating this incident, large number devotees took out a procession holding palm leaves blessed by the priest, before the mass in all catholic, orthodox and jacobite Churches.

“It is the day when the Christ entered Jerusalem City with his followers as the king of the world and he entered the Jerusalem church,” said Father Varghese Kalappara, a parish of Saint Thomas Jacobites Church Parish.

Jimmy Abraham, a devotee, said: “We are celebrating ‘Palm Sunday’ because we are entering into holiest of the holy weeks from this Sunday to the next Sunday till the Easter. This celebration actually signifies the glory of Jesus.”

Similar celebrations were also held in other parishes in the interiors and rural areas of Kerala.

In many Christian churches, ‘Palm Sunday’ is often referred to as ‘Passion Sunday’ and marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday. (ANI)

Barber finds Christ-like face on church wall

London, Mar 23 (ANI): A Scot barber has found what he says to be an exact likeness to Jesus Christ’s face on a church wall.

Crimper Alan Stocks, 40, had been taking a break between customers outside his shop, when he noticed the image, which had a beard like Jesus and a crown of thorns made from moss growing on the stone.

The wall runs down one side of Greenock Westburn Church in the Inverclyde town.

“I noticed the face on the wall as soon as I saw it – it’s incredible. It definitely looks like Jesus,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“I was outside having a wee break and the face caught my eye – I’ve never noticed it before.

“I usually come to the same place most days for a break

“But it’s really strange that it’s on a church wall as well especially with it coming up for Easter. It’s as if it’s just appeared at this time of the year,” he stated.

Stocks showed the face to his wife Sharon, 38, who was also struck by the likeness to Jesus, and took a photo to show pals.

“Everyone I’ve shown the picture to has been the same – they’ve been stunned to see the face,” he said.

“And it’s certainly a mystery as to how it has appeared on the wall now,” he added.

Greenock Westburn’s Minister Rev Douglas Hamilton is yet to see the image, but says that he is happy with it.

“If it brings a smile to people’s faces I’m happy with it. Though I’m not expecting flocks of pilgrims down to see it,” he said. (ANI)
