UN calls for New Zealand-led inquiry into Israel’s Gaza flotilla raid

Tel Aviv, June 6 (ANI): United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has called for a New-Zealand committee led investigation into Israel’s Gaza flotilla raid.

He said that the committee should be led by New Zealand Prime Minister Geofferey Palmer and must include Israeli and Turkish deputies in an advisory role.

The UN has handed over the proposal to Israel over the weekend and is yet to receive an official response from the country.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Saturday that he supports the formation of an inquiry committee on the IDF raid of the Mavi Marmara ship, as long as the soldiers who participated in the mission would not be investigated.

Sources in Barak”s office said that the defense minister backs an Israeli-led probe of the event, and if necessary, would support an international probe, the paper said.

The Isreali defense establishment is now open to the idea of ships sailing through Gaza strip provided that they dock at (ANI)

‘US pressed Israel to release 400 Turkish citizens’

Jerusalem, June 4 (ANI): Turkey’s Deputy Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Selim Yenel has said that the US pressured Israel to facilitate the speedy release of more than 400 Turkish citizens whom the Israeli forces took into custody from the Gaza-bound protest ships.

But the Israeli Government sources refused to comment on any US involvement in the deportation of the activists, who were brought to Ashdod Port on Monday.

An Israeli official said they were freed quickly because Israel had no desire to keep them, as that would only have further aggravated a sensitive diplomatic situation, The Jerusalem Post reports.

The sources said that on Tuesday night the diplomatic-security cabinet made a decision to release the 700 people who had been on board the vessels.

“It is a first step,” Yenel said, and it helped cool down some of the tensions. But he added that the crisis the incident caused in Israeli-Turkish relations was far from over.

During the IDF raid, eight men from Turkey aged between 32 and 61 were killed on board the Mavi Marmara Turkish passenger ship, as was Turkish-American Furkan Dogan.

The deaths mark the first time in “our joint history that the Israeli military has killed Turkish citizens. We are friends. We are partners. We have had close cooperation on everything. That is why we feel so taken aback,” Yenel said.

To protest against the incident, Turkey recalled its ambassador for consultations. He arrived in Ankara from Israel on Thursday. It is unclear how long he will be there, or when he will return. (ANI)

Sir Elton John gig banned in Egypt

New York, May 4 (ANI): British pop icon Sir Elton John was banned from performing at an upcoming private concert in Egypt.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the 63-year-old singer, who is openly homosexual, was apparently barred from performing at the May 18 show by the head of Egypt’s Musician Union because of his “anti-religious sentiments.”

The head of the union, Mounir al Wasimi said to a foreign news agency that Sir Elton’s claim that Jesus was gay and his demand for Middle Eastern countries to allow sexual freedom amongst gays was ridiculous.

The multimillionaire star sparked off controversy in February, when he commented that there was no tolerance for homosexuals in the Middle East.

“I don”t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you”re as good as dead,” The New York Post quoted Sir Elton as telling U.S. magazine Parade.

He also claimed Jesus was a “super-intelligent gay man” who “understood human problems.” (ANI)

Obama to host tripartite meeting with Israeli PM and Palestinian President

Jerusalem, Sep 20 (ANI): In an effort to renew the peace process in the Middle East, President Barack Obama will host a tripartite meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the meeting would take place after Obama meets separately with each of the two leaders.

“These meetings will continue the efforts of President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Special Envoy George Mitchell to lay the groundwork for the relaunch of negotiations, and to create a positive context for those negotiations so that they can succeed,” the Jerusalem Post quoted a White House statement, as saying.

The meetings will take place in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly conference.

The White House announcement of the meeting comes as something of a surprise, since both Israel and the PA until Saturday continued to blame each other for the current stall in peace talks

And recently, Mitchell had failed to make progress in talks with the two leaders.

On Saturday, Mitchell said: “It is another sign of the president’s deep commitment to comprehensive peace that he wants to personally engage at this juncture.” (ANI)

Russia too blasts Ahmadinejad’s ‘Holocaust-a myth’ remark

Jerusalem, Sep 20 (ANI): Following the US and UK deploring Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s ‘Holocaust- a myth’ remark, Russia too has called his statement “totally unacceptable.”

The Jerusalem Post quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko as saying that “such statements, wherever they come from, contradict the truth and are totally unacceptable.”

“Attempts to rewrite history, especially as the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II is being marked this year, are an offense to the memory of all victims and all those who fought fascism,” Nesterenko added.

On Friday, Ahmadinejad had told a rally in Tehran that the Holocaust was “a false pretext to create Israel.” He also called on all Muslims to confront the “Zionist regime [as] a national and religious duty.”

US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice had termed Ahmadinejad’s comments as “hateful.”

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was quoted as saying: “Obviously we condemn what he said.”
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband also criticized Ahmadinejad’s ‘myth’ remark.
In a statement communicated by the UK Embassy in Israel, Miliband had said: “Ahmadinejad’s repeated denials of the Holocaust are abhorrent as well as ignorant. It is very important that the world community stands up against this tide of abuse. This outburst is not worthy of the leader of Iran.”
“Iran’s people have a great history and culture. I cannot believe that the vast majority of them want to rewrite this chapter of history rather than focus on the future. The coincidence of today’s comments with the start of Jewish New Year only adds to the insult,” he added. (ANI)

Qaeda-backed LeT set for series of terror attacks in India, warns Israel’s NSC

Tel Aviv, Sep.18 (ANI): Israel’s National Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau has issued a terror warning for India, saying a Pakistani terror group, having close links with Al-Qaeda, is planning to carry out series of strikes across the country.

“A Pakistani terror organization affiliated with al-Qaida and responsible for the attacks in Mumbai last year is planning to carry out a string of attacks throughout the Indian subcontinent,” the notice issued by the bureau stated.

The warning said that though foreigners, especially from western countries could be targeted, and that Israelis and places where Israelis usually assemble in large numbers are on top of the terror outfit’s hit list.

The bureau rated the threat as ‘imminent and concrete’ and emphasized on the Jammu and Kashmir region, The Jerusalem Post reported.

This is probably the first time that such a warning has been issued regarding threat to Israelis in India, as India is considered a friendly country with thousands of Israelis living in different part of the nation. (ANI)

Israel says Goldstone Report supports terror

Jerusalem, Sep.16 (ANI): Israel has described the Goldstone Commission Report as biased and nauseating, and added that it has created an unjust “equivalence of a democratic state with a terror organization”.

The commission, established by the UN Human Rights Council and led by former South African constitutional court judge Richard Goldstone, concluded that “Israel committed actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity,” during Operation Cast Lead from late December to mid-January.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the report “concludes there is also evidence that Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes, as well as possibly crimes against humanity,” by firing rockets at cities in southern Israel.

The four-member investigative panel recommended that the UN Security Council require Israel to launch its own investigations.

American officials would not comment Tuesday about the report, or the possibility that the US would veto any effort in the Security Council to refer Israel to the ICC.

A US official said: “We’ve received a copy of Judge Goldstone’s report regarding the alleged human rights allegations during the Gaza conflict. As the report is lengthy, and the issues it addresses are complex, the findings will take time to digest, and we are reviewing it carefully.” (ANI)

Spanish balladeer Julio Iglesias performs in Israel

Jerusalem , September 10 (ANI): Spanish balladeer Julio Iglesias recently gave his first performance in Israel since 1998.

The show was the first of the two concerts at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv and the 65-year-old was dressed in his trademark sleek black suit, vest and tie.

The concert titled “Julio Iglesias in Concert” had a five-piece band, a trio of back-up singers and two ballroom dancers to accompany him on stage.

The crooner belted out some of the crowd’s favorite numbers like “Natalie,” “Mi Amor” and “Fools Rush In.”

And in relation to the conflict in the region, he said: “understands your feelings and your fight,” the Jerusalem Post reports.

He even told the audience that his mother was Jewish and quipped that he himself was “Jewish from the waist up.”

Igleslias went on to mention his past Israeli girlfriends from his first trip to Israel in 1974 to the cheer of the audience.

In between songs he advised the proper dosage of Viagra for sexual vitality and how he “makes love” with his songs on stage. (ANI)

Israel accuses HRW of hitting a new low by hiring expert who collects Nazi memorabilia

Jerusalem, Sep.10 (ANI): Human Rights Watch’s employment of a man who trades and collects Nazi memorabilia as its “senior military expert” is a “new low” for the organization that frequently criticizes Israel, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s policy director Ron Dermer said Wednesday.

“I thought that nothing could top a human rights organization trying to raise money in Saudi Arabia, but I was apparently wrong,” said Dermer.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Dermer was referring to reports, both in the blogosphere and the press, that Marc Garlasco, HRW’s senior military expert, who has written numerous reports condemning Israel, is an avid collector of Nazi memorabilia.

Omri Ceren, on a blog called Mere Rhetoric, wrote that Garlasco was “obsessed with the color and pageantry of Nazism, has published a detailed 430-page book on Nazi war paraphernalia, and participates in forums for Nazi souvenir collectors.”

Dermer said the revelations made it “easier to understand how an organization that was initially called Helsinki Watch, and was dedicated to helping brave Soviet dissidents fight against tyranny, has turned into an organization that facilitates the assault of some of the worst regimes and terror groups against the very democratic countries that uphold human rights.

HRW issued a statement saying that Garlasco’s family experience on both sides of WWII – his grandfather was in the German army and his great-uncle was in the US air force – led him to collect military memorabilia from that period.

HRW emphatically denied that Garlasco was a Nazi sympathizer because he “collected German [as well as American] military memorabilia.”

HRW said the “accusation is demonstrably false and fits into a campaign to deflect attention from Human Rights Watch’s rigorous and detailed reporting on violations of international human rights and humanitarian law by the Israeli government.” (ANI)

Israeli MP says Livni attending Madonna gig illegal

Jerusalem, Sep. 10 (ANI): Likud politician Danny Danon has filed a complaint with the Knesset Ethics Committee against opposition leader Tzipi Livni for accepting an invitation from Madonna to sit in a VIP section at the singer’s recent concert in Tel Aviv.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Livni was invited by Madonna to sit in a special section next to the ‘Queen of Pop’s family as a special guest when the two had dinner on the eve of the first show last week.

According to Danon, Livni paid 490 shekels, the price for a regular spot, and therefore, the acceptance of Madonna’s invitation violated the prohibition against MKs receiving gifts.

“The fact that she received a present violates ethics laws,” Danon told Israel Radio on Thursday. “I expect a swift response from the Knesset Ethics Committee.”

The diva dined with the Kadima leader last Monday, at Madonna’s request, Livni spokesman Gil Messing said last week.

Livni “was very impressed with Madonna and found her to be a very interesting person,” said Messing, adding that the two decided to keep the content of their conversation private. (ANI)

Ex-Mossad head says ‘Netanyahu agreed to Golan pullout’

Jerusalem, Sep.10 (ANI): Former Mossad head Danny Yatom has claimed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to withdraw Israeli troops from the entire Golan Heights during his first term in exchange for a peace deal with Syria and the normalization of ties between Jerusalem and Damascus. Yatom told Israel Radio that the proof for his claim was a document that appears in his new book, in which Ron Lauder, Netanyahu’s special envoy for talks with Syria at the time, reported the prime minister’s agreement to then-US president Bill Clinton.

The former Mossad chief said that although Netanyahu’s agreement didn’t bind him now, 11 years later, “he has to admit” that he did agree to withdraw from the territory.

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), however, told the radio station that the prime minister had not agreed to such a pullout and had repeated it on numerous occasions.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Yatom also told Army Radio on Wednesday night that only a military strike would stop Iran from attaining nuclear arms status. (ANI)

Dead Sea evaporating faster each year rather than decreasing

Jerusalem, September 7 (ANI): New data has suggested that the Dead Sea is evaporating faster each year rather than decreasing at a steady rate.

According to a report in the Jerusalem Post, the data was provided by the Hydrological Service and geologist Eli Raz.

The sea evaporated 18 cm. in August and 19 cm. in July, dropping to 422.83 meters below sea level.

The drop-off rate over the last decade has been 1.016 meters per year. Now, it has increased to 1.29 meters annually, according to the latest numbers.

The sea has dropped roughly 25 meters in the last 33 years and over 10 meters in the last decade.

Fresh water used to flow down the Jordan River to replenish the Dead Sea, thus keeping it constant throughout the millennia.

However, in the 1960s, the water was diverted into the National Water Carrier for the populace to drink.

These days, the only thing that flows into the Dead Sea is raw sewage and effluence from the fish ponds along the Jordan River.

In addition, the industrial processes being carried out at the Dead Sea to harvest minerals also contribute to the evaporation rate.

Regional governments are aware of the problem and have commissioned the World Bank to examine the feasibility of conveying water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea.

Some of the water would replenish the Dead Sea and some of it would be desalinated for Jordanian use, one of the 10 most water-poor countries in the world.

The feasibility studies are supposed to take until early 2011 to complete. However, there has been an increasing call by local environmentalists for alternatives to the Red-Dead Canal project to be considered.

Concurrently, the Israelis and Jordanians have recently approved a pilot conveyance project to test what effect water from the Red Sea would have on the Dead Sea.

Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) has been at the forefront of pushing for the alternatives study.

“The terms of reference for the alternatives study have now been approved and it is supposed to launch in October,” Friends of the Earth Israel Director Gidon Bromberg told The Jerusalem Post. (ANI)

Neo-Nazi activities cause panic in Israeli city

Jerusalem, Sep. 7 (ANI): Following the shocking discovery of anti-Semitic messages scrawled on the wall of a synagogue located in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva, a resurgence of neo-Nazi activity is being feared in the region.

On Saturday, worshipers saw words “Long live Hitler the saint” scribbled in Hebrew on the building’s walls, alongside a large black cross.

Inside, crosses were drawn on prayer brooks.

The worshipers waited for Shabbat to end before calling the police.

“We are sensitive to this incident because of the history of neo-Nazi activity here, and because a holy place has been desecrated. We are checking to see whether neo-Nazi activity has sprouted up again in this city,” The Jerusalem Post quoted a police source, as saying.

“This is not an easy investigation. There are a number of directions. I very much hope that arrests will be made in the coming days. We are determined to put a stop to this,” he added.

Last year, eight members of a neo-Nazi gang in Petah Tikva, comprising Russian immigrant youths, were arrested for assaults on drug addicts, foreign workers, and Orthodox Jews.

The gang’s leader was sentenced for seven years behind bars. (ANI)

Poll shows greater greater American support for Israelis than Palestinians

New York, Sep.6 (ANI): A recent poll for The Israel Project shows support has bounced back in the United States for Israelis rather than the Palestinians after slipping in the aftermath of US President Barack Obama’s Cairo speech.

The poll, conducted by Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research (GQRR), asked some 800 likely US voters the following question: “Thinking about the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in the Middle East, please tell me whether, in general, you consider yourself to be an Israel supporter, Palestinian supporter, or neither/undecided.”

Some 59 percent of the respondents said they were Israel supporters, compared to 29 percent for the Palestinians. The poll was conducted by telephone from August 22 to 25.

This was a considerable jump in support for Israel since June, following the US president’s speech in Cairo, when the same question was asked and Israel’s support was only 49 percent, reports the Jerusalem Post.

The number of Americans who think America should support Israel over the Palestinians also increased considerably over the last two months, with 63 percent saying the US should support Israel, and 24 percent saying it should support the Palestinians. In June, that number was 44 percent for Israel, and 32 percent for the Palestinians.

According to the poll, 57 percent of the public believes Israel is committed to peace, and 39 percent said they do not think the government is committed to an agreement. In June that number was 46 percent saying Israel was committed to peace, and 39 percent saying it was not.

In other survey findings, a majority of Americans disagree with Palestinian leaders’ position not to start negotiations until Israel halts all construction on settlements. (ANI)

Karen Berg alleged the Queen of Pop has emerged as a new being after undergoing spiritual transformation.

“If you compare her 13 years ago, when she started studying, and today, she’s a changed person,” the Jerusalem Post quoted Berg as saying.

“She’s a good human being, she studies, she wants depth. She’s a ravenous student. She’s a very highly intelligent and spiritual human being.

“She reads and follows Hebrew, and has learned how to speak some Hebrew,” Berg added.

Exhibition glorifying female Palestinian bombers generates outrage

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Organizers of an art exhibition had to take down portraits depicting female Palestinian suicide bombers as the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus after the families of those killed or wounded in the attacks protested.

The controversial exhibition, which featured the work of artists Galina Bleich and Liliah Check, displayed a series of paintings of the bombers rendered to look like Renaissance-era portraits of Catholic saints, The Jerusalem Post reports.

The exhibition opened at Sokolov House press center in Tel Aviv agreed to take the portraits down, but another section – sand and dirt that had been taken from the scenes of the bombings and spread out across canvas – remained on the gallery’s walls.

The victims’ families expressed outrage over both the content of the exhibition and the fact that the headquarters of the Israeli Journalists Association, had agreed to show it.

Dalit Levy, whose 17-year-old stepdaughter Rachel was killed in a suicide bombing as she shopped at the Supersol supermarket in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Hayovel, arrived outside Sokolov House on Thursday afternoon with an Israeli flag draped over her shoulders.

“You want art?” she asked a group of reporters who had gathered around her. “Here’s art!” she said, before spilling a can of red paint next to a photograph of her stepdaughter and two memorial candles. “This is the blood of our children!”

Almagor, The Association for Terror Victims in Israel, also issued a stern response to the exhibit, and threatened to take legal action if the portraits were not taken down.

“We’ve contacted the attorney-general and asked him to take legal action against the exhibition’s representatives. Any action that strengthens or praises the murderous acts of terrorism is violating the law and hurting the general public by legitimising the murders,” he said.

Indor said his group was worried the artists would try to show the exhibit elsewhere.

“We’ve been in contact with the artists, and made it clear that we want them to add information to the material so that people will understand that this is not promoting terrorism, but against it,” he said. (ANI)

Senior FBI agent says Gaddafi may have sanctioned Lockerbie bombing

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): A senior FBI agent has claimed that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi must have personally okayed the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people.

Richard Marquise, an FBI veteran who led the US task force probing the December 1988 blast, said it is unthinkable that such a major terrorist attack in a regime like Libya could have been authorized without Gaddafi’s approval.

“If you were a senior minister, would you do this without telling the boss? I doubt it. I have to think [Gaddafi] knew something was going to happen, something that the US would be pissed about, and he said OK,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Marquise, as saying.

He said investigators had tried to pursue the chain of responsibility up through the Libyan hierarchy, but had been unable to muster the necessary evidence.

“We couldn’t make the connections… A lot of names came up… We had names of people in the Libyan hierarchy, buying radios, making inquiries about putting bombs in radios,” Marquise said.

The bomb that destroyed Pan Am 103 was hidden in a Toshiba radio cassette player.

“But there was no real overt act [that could serve as the basis for an indictment. It would have been nice to indict the entire Libyan regime, but our system wouldn’t allow for it. It would have been a real struggle to show Gaddafi and others in the chain,” he said.

Marquise said he was also convinced that Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the former Libyan intelligence officer who is the only man ever convicted in the attack, was no “rogue” agent.

“It had been hoped that Megrahi would give us the whole story, and go up the chain. That didn’t happen. And Megrahi never talked. He did everything for his leader,” he said. (ANI)

Iran’s ‘wanted’ defence minister warns Israel not to attack its N-facilities

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Iran’s controversial new Defence Minister Ahmad Vahid has warned Israel not to attack the country’s nuclear facilities.

“Every move from the Zionist entity against Iran will be met with a harsh and powerful response from Iran,” The Jerusalem Post quoted him, Vahidi saying.

Vahidi also said that the overwhelming support he had garnered in the parliamentary vote on his appointment “attested to the anti-Zionist spirit of the Iranian parliament and people.”

Vahidi is a wanted by Interpol for masterminding the Buenos Aires Jewish centre bomb blast in 1994 that claimed 85 lives.

Buenos Aires has called General Vahidi’s inclusion in Ahmadinejad’s new Cabinet “an affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack”.

US President Barack Obama has termed Vahidi’s inclusion in the Cabinet as “disturbing”.

Vahidi gained support earlier this week when lawmakers said they would not bow to foreign pressures to reject him.

The chairman of the Iranian foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said the allegations “will not have any negative impact on the assessment” of General Vahidi’s suitability for the job.

“Rather, it may increase his vote,” he noted.

Ahmadinejad has faced questions about the experience and expertise of some of the choices for his 21-seat cabinet. But on Thursday, he managed to win approval for many key posts that included the foreign, interior, intelligence ministries and Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister.

The parliament also backed Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, making her the Islamic republic’s first female minister since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. (ANI)
