Emma Watson used gap year to design teen summer wear for People Tree

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Harry Potter star Emma Watson has revealed that she spent her gap year designing a ‘complete teenage summer wardrobe’ for the fair trade fashion brand People Tree.

Watson, 19, who has just enrolled at Brown University in the US, acted as a creative advisor for the ethical fashion collection, which will reach shops in February.

“I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to help alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” Sky News quoted her as saying.

“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.

“It has been the most incredible gap year project,” she added.

Among items that the teen actress has had a hand in designing were knitwear, cotton t-shirts, jersey dresses, and poplin shorts.

Her range also includes some more bizarre items, including “bohemian hand embroidered bed throws, recycled sweetie wrapper jewellery, banana fibre slouchy beanies and head scarves.”

They will be sold by People Tree, a company which aims at supporting developing countries and promoting environmental projects. (ANI)

Wendy Williams would love to have Whitney Houston on new TV show

New York, July 15 (ANI): Wendy Williams is apparently over her feud with Whitney Houston, for she has said that she would be more than happy to have the crooner on her new TV show.

The duo got into a massive row in 2003, when the radio host questioned Houston about her alleged drug problems.

This made the songbird to curse at Williams on-air.

However, talking at the launch of her TV program ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ at the Gates recently, the RJ said that she was ready to bury the hatchet, and would like Houston to come on her show.

“Whitney and I have history, but we’re also Jersey girls and women of a certain age, and I think we’re both in a really good place,” the New York Daily News quoted her as having said.

She added: “We have a new life to celebrate. I’d love to have Whitney on the show.” (ANI)

Murray frustrated with fellow Brits not joining him at the top

London, May 27 (ANI): World number three Andy Murray has slammed Britain’s men tennis players for a string of “very poor” displays in 2009.

Murray, who takes on Italian Potito Starace in the second round of the French Open, is becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of fellow countrymen joining him at the top of tennis.

Murray is once again the only Brit in the men’s draw here at Roland Garros with Alex Bogdanovic ranked a lowly 196, Josh Goodall 217 and James Ward 225.

Dan Evans, 19, is Britain’s best young prospect and while he won a Challenger tournament in Jersey in March, he has struggled since and is ranked at 316, The Sun reports.

Murray, who always felt that some Brits do not work hard enough, said: “We had three girls in the main draw here and that is great, but the guys need to step up. The first four, five months have been very poor. They have won so few matches. James Ward won a Challenger recently but before that had struggled.”

“Dan Evans has won a Challenger but since then has not done anything. It’s about sustaining it. It’s not about doing it one week, it’s about doing it 30-40 weeks a year,” he added.

Murray also becomes annoyed when he sees British players do well at Wimbledon then fail to continue the momentum.

Last year, 659-ranked Chris Eaton won three qualifying rounds at Wimbledon and then made the second round but has done little since. (ANI)

Henry may return to Arsenal, says Wenger

London, May 24 (ANI): Star footballer Thierry Henry may don Arsenal’s jersey once again after his contract ends with Barcelona.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger dropped the bombshell about Henry’s return to his former club, days before his former talisman prepares for Wednesday’s Champions League final against Manchester United.

Wegner said Henry still loves Arsenal so much that he continues to watch all Gunners games, including the reserves.

When asked about the possibility of Henry’s return, he said: “Of course, I hope for the club to have people of his quality.”

Although he accepted the fact that Henry may not remain the same tactful mover on the pitch after his return as he would have turned 35 then.

“It would be difficult as a player because in 2010 he will be 33 and I think he still has one or two years to go on his contract at Barcelona. But he has a very strong link with this club and was a massive influence here,” The Sunday Express quoted Wenger, as saying.

Meanwhile, Stoke City’s boss Tony Pulis said the he considers it ‘ridiculous’ that Wenger is getting stick from Arsenal fans. The very thought that Wenger is even being questioned is bizarre,” Pulis said. (ANI)

Novel TB test may provide results quickly, efficiently

Washington, May 08 (ANI): A scientist has developed a new diagnostic test for TB, called Xpert MTB/RIF, which can provide results quickly and efficiently.

The test, developed by Dr. David Alland, chief of the Division of Infectious Disease at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, can simultaneously identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and resistance to the common first-line drug for treating TB and a reliable surrogate marker of strains that are multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB).

Test results that used to take weeks can now be available within hours.

Dr. Alland believes the device will transform TB diagnostics.

“It brings the diagnostic laboratory to the patient’s bedside and provides results within hours. We are very excited and hopeful that this test will dramatically improve tuberculosis detection and treatment,” said Dr. Alland.

Health officials from Cepheid, the manufacturer of the device, believe the test will fill the need for accurate and rapid detection of tuberculosis, which is becoming increasingly acute. (ANI)

White Sox call on `First Fan’ Obama

Washington, Apr.21 (ANI): President Obama greeted each member of the White Sox team during their tour of the White House on Monday.

Octavio Dotel, a relief pitcher from the Dominican Republic, asked for — and received — a hug instead of a handshake from Obama.

”This is a guy I’ve been following. It’s exciting to see him. He’s such a powerful man. I never met him before, and it’s really neat to be around him.Just to be close to him and have that chance … I saw the opportunity to ask for a hug. He said, ‘Of course.’ That was really nice of him. He knows a lot about us. He noticed that we’ve been playing well lately. He’s a big fan. I can tell he really enjoyed [the visit],” the Chicago Sun Times quoted Dotel, as saying.

About 30 White Sox players, staff, front-office personnel and family members visited the White House, a day before beginning a series in Baltimore tonight.

”We got to see everything. All we needed to see is where he lives. I’m telling you, it was great,” Dotel said.

Dotel had been to the White House as a member of the Houston Astros when George W. Bush was in office, but the team didn’t get to meet Bush — let alone hug him.

The Sox presented Obama with a black jersey with his name and No. 1 on the back, as well as autographed baseballs, T-shirts and caps. He took several photos with the group and told the Sox to keep winning so he can invite them back as World Series champions. (ANI)

IPL merchandise sales take a hit in Kolkata

Kolkata, Apr 18 (ANI): With the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches being played far away from home in South Africa, merchandise sales are seeing a slump in Kolkata markets.

The shopkeepers who have invested hugely in IPL T-Shirts of all teams, are ruing the loss of customers.

From the black and gold tees of the Kolkata Knight Riders, to the startling Yellow and Black of the Deccan Chargers T-Shirts, from the Blue and Yellow Rajasthan Royals sports jerseys to the Black and Red Delhi Dare Devils tracksuits, from the Light Blue and Red of Punjab XI Tees to the Yellow and Red with a tinge of Blue Chennai Super Kings Tees and the Sky Blue and Deep Blue of Mumbai Indians tees – all are available in abundance but there are few customers to buy it.

Shopkeepers like Mohammad Salaluddin pointed out that when the matches were being played at Eden Gardens in last year’s IPL tournament, all local fans were going to the stadium after buying the T-Shirts of their favourite teams.

“Most of the sales were of the Kolkata Knight Riders. This time I am not harbouring any such hopes. Even at knocked down prices of Rs. 80 onwards, on the eve of IPL series, there are hardly any customers,” Salaluddin added.

“Our business has been affected a lot after the IPL venue was shifted to South Africa. Last year we did good business as the matches took place in Kolkata, but this year business is very bad. We sold at least 250 pieces of every team last year but this year the sale is very low. Locals used to wear the jerseys to watch matches in Eden Gardens but this year nobody can go there, so who will buy?” he said.

Locals believe buying and wearing their favourite team’s jersey and sitting in front of the television to watch the matches can only be a compensation for missing the excitement of cheering the team from the stands in their team colours.

“It is our bad luck that the IPL has been shifted to South Africa. We cannot go to South Africa so we are now buying T-Shirts in a hope to enjoy matches sitting at home,” said Rajesh, a cricket fan.

Foreign spectators are expected to supplement the local crowds, with 4,000 Indians are likely to attend the matches in the next five weeks. (ANI)

Jersey builds partnership with India

Mumbai, Apr 16 (ANI/Business Wire India): The Channel Island of Jersey, which is an offshore financial centre is encouraging Indian Companies, business families and non-resident Indians to look at its new and innovative wealth management solutions.

“Our new investment vehicle – the foundations – can be a very effective vehicle in succession planning and private wealth management strategies for the high net worth business families and non-resident Indians. We already have a large clientele among HNI families in the Middle East and now we feel that we can offer a lot to Indian families as well,” said Geoff Cook, chief executive, Jersey Finance, who was in India with a delegation last week to promote the island’s finance industry.

Appreciating India’s resilience in times of a global economic crisis, Jersey is keen to participate and partner in India’s growth. Says Geoff Cook, “We also want to learn more about the needs of Indian investors, and if we can, we will seek to tailor our commercial offerings to suit the specific requirements of the Indian marketplace.”

With Switzerland embroiled in a controversy over the decision to soften sections of its banking secrecy laws, Jersey now hopes to make inroads into the Indian clientele.

“During our visit last week to India we had preliminary discussions with the Reserve Bank of India and SEBI which were very encouraging. We hope that some time in future we will be able to negotiate a tax treaty with India on the lines of the double tax agreement that is in place between India and Singapore,” says Geoff Cook, CEO, Jersey Finance.

The fact that Jersey is a well-regulated, cooperative jurisdiction recognized by the IMF, the Financial Action Task Force and the Financial Stability Forum is being showcased along ith the fact that it’s tax neutral, and enjoys proximity to London and its capital markets. (ANI)

Shevchenko hopes to remain with AC Milan

Rome – Veteran striker Andriy Shevchenko has said he would like to stay on at AC Milan after his loan from Chelsea expires at the end of the season, the ANSA news agency reported Monday.

“My hope is to remain at Milan also in the next season,” the 32-year-old Ukrainian international said. “At the moment, no decision has been taken.”

Sheva left Milan in 2006 after seven seasons, helping the Devils win one Serie A title and one Champions League. He scored 173 goals on 296 donning the red-black jersey.

His two seasons at Chelsea were only partly convincing and the London club agreed to loan him back to Milan in the summer of 2008.

The return to Milan, however, has failed to improve his performance as Sheva scored two goals in the 22 games that he seldom played form the start.

He still has wide support from Milan fans, who forgave his farewell in 2006 and at the weekend showed a banner inviting coach Carlo Ancelotti to “have more respect for Sheva.”

“I’d like to be more on the pitch,” the striker said. “And if (the public) want it, it makes me happy.

“I’m going through a good moment. First the goal at Wembley (in London, where Ukraine lost 2-1 to England on Wednesday), then the assist (for Filippo Inzaghi in a 2-0 home league win over Lecce) last night.

“I’m happy about this. I want to keep going and give my best until the end of the season.”

Here’s what G20 leaders had for dinner at 10 Downing Street

London, April 2 (ANI): The G20 leaders gathered at 10 Downing Street on the eve of crunch talks at the global summit enjoyed a dinner menu chosen by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, which featured the best of seasonal produce from around the UK.

Organic salmon from Shetland, with samphire and sea kale, local vegetables and Irish soda bread formed part of the menu.

The leaders also got to enjoy slow-roasted shoulder of lamb from north Wales, Jersey Royal potatoes, wild mushrooms, and mint sauce.

Bakewell tart and custard were also available.

“I’m very, very proud of my country and its food traditions and I know that the guests at Downing Street will be in for a real treat,” Sky News quoted Oliver as saying.

Even though his wife Jools is due to give birth to their third child imminently, he still prepared delicious dishes for the guests.

Assisting him were eight current apprentices and recent graduates from his Fifteen restaurant. (ANI)

New gene silencing platform developed to cure RNAi-resistant diseases

London, Feb 9 (ANI): Taking a step beyond RNA interference (RNAi), scientists have now developed a novel gene silencing platform that may enable the development and discovery of a new class of drugs to treat a wide array of diseases resistant to current RNAi.

Led by Rutgers’ Samuel Gunderson, the researchers developed the technology with an approach to specifically target RNA biosynthesis.

The platform boasts very significant improvements over existing RNAi approaches.
RNA interference (RNAi) is a system within living cells that helps control which genes are active and how active they are.

The highly efficient gene silencing agents use a novel mechanism of action for their functioning.

The agents are single-stranded oligonucleotides, called U1 Adaptors, that have dual, and independent, functions. First is a target-gene binding domain that can be tailored to any gene. The second domain inhibits mRNA maturation by binding U1 snRNP, a component of the cellular splicing apparatus.

By combining both capabilities in the same molecule, the U1 Adaptor can inhibit the pre-mRNA maturation step of polyA tail addition in a gene specific manner.

Also, the domains of the oligonucleotide are independent, thus transcript binding and U1 snRNP binding can be independently optimised and adapted to a wide array of genes associated with disease.

“The U1 Adaptor platform expands on early technologies that used 5′-end-mutated U1 snRNA,” Nature magazine quoted Gunderson an associate professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, as saying.

He added: “The U1 Adaptor is an oligonucleotide version of this older method and instead targets the 3′ end processing step. U1 Adaptors have high activity when used alone and are synergistic when used in combination with RNAi.”

He also said that the range of possible targets was very broad due to the mechanism of action in which inhibition occurs during the biosynthesis of mRNA at the near universal 3′ end processing step.

In his opinion, the most interesting aspect of this technology is that U1 Adaptors can possibly inhibit genes that do not respond to current RNAi methods.

The applications of U1 Adaptors expand on those currently available using standard RNAi approaches. They can be used as a research tool to determine gene function and to validate gene targets.

Gene silencing molecules also have potential prophylactic and therapeutic applications based upon ongoing clinical trials using RNAi and traditional antisense approaches.

The research findings have been reported in the online edition of Nature Biotechnology. (ANI)

Breast cancer gene linked to disease spread identified

Washington, Jan 6 (ANI): Scientists have identified a long-sought gene that is fatefully switched on in 30 to 40 percent of all breast cancer patients, spreading the disease, resisting traditional chemotherapies and eventually leading to death.

The gene, called ‘Metadherin’ or MTDH, is situated in a small region of human chromosome 8 and appears to be crucial to cancer”s spread or metastasis because it helps tumour cells stick tightly to blood vessels in distant organs.

The gene also makes tumours more resistant to the powerful chemotherapeutic agents normally used to wipe out the deadly cells.

In identifying the genetic mechanism at play in the metastasis of breast cancer, researchers at Princeton University and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey may have answered one of the biggest mysteries in cancer research and paved the way for new drugs that could thwart the gene”s diabolical actions.

“Inhibiting this gene in breast cancer patients will simultaneously achieve two important goals — reduce the chance of recurrence and, at the same time, decrease the risk of metastatic dissemination. Clinically, these are the two major reasons why breast cancer patients die from the disease,” said Yibin Kang, an assistant professor of molecular biology at Princeton, who led the study.

According to co-author Michael Reiss, director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the discovery is important for several other reasons,

“Not only has a new metastasis gene been identified, but this also is one of a few such genes for which the exact mode of action has been elucidated. That gives us a real shot at developing a drug that will inhibit metastasis,” said Reiss, also a professor of medicine, molecular genetics and microbiology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The discovery is based on three years of work, using an approach that combines the emerging science of integrative genomics with the classical methods of clinical research and laboratory experiments.

The study appears in the Jan. 6 edition of Cancer Cell. (ANI)

Posey sparks unbeaten Hornets past James, Cavaliers

Los Angeles – LeBron James now has a clear understanding of why the New Orleans Hornets signed James Posey in the off season.

Posey sparked a fourth-quarter surge with a strip of James and a dunk Saturday night as the New Orleans Hornets pulled away from the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 104-92 victory in an early season match-up of championship contenders.

David West scored 25 points, and Chris Paul added 24 and 15 assists for the Hornets (3-0), who limited James to 15 points and captured their home opener after road wins over Golden State and Phoenix.

“I never really got into a comfortable zone all night tonight,” said James, who played unselfishly and had 13 assists. “We still were in the game going into the fourth quarter, but late in the game, I never got into it.”

Both teams reached game seven of their conference semifinals last season and added key players in the off season. Cleveland traded for point guard Mo Williams, and New Orleans added Posey, who won titles with Miami in 2006 and Boston in 2008. He has been coming off the bench, providing his trademark tough defence and clutch shooting.

“Posey has been great since day one,” Hornets coach Byron Scott said. “I told him I’m going to use him more [offensively] than some of his other coaches have as far as allowing him to run the offence and post up.”

Wally Szczerbiak opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that gave Cleveland a 75-73 lead. The Cavaliers still held an 83-81 edge after a James free throw with 6:13 left before the Hornets surged.

Paul answered with a jumper and found Rasual Butler for a 3-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Posey poked the ball away from a driving James and went in for an uncontested dunk and an 88-83 lead with 5:08 left.

“Defence was the key,” Scott noted. “We were very aggressive against LeBron and just didn’t give him the alleys he’s accustomed to seeing.”

West made a jumper, Posey added a free throw and Paul drained two more to push the lead to double digits. James finally answered with a drive, but Posey clinched it, taking a pass from Paul and burying a 3-pointer for a 96-85 lead with 2:25 to go.

“We have very unselfish guys,” said Posey, who had 15 points, six rebounds and four steals. “You have Chris making plays for himself and everybody else. You move the ball and you get wide-open shots.”

Rasual Butler started and scored 14 points for the Hornets, who were without injured starters Peja Stojakovic of Serbia and Tyson Chandler.

Lithuania’s Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 18 points, and Daniel Gibson added 14 for the Cavaliers, who had six players in double figures but fell to 1-2.
