405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Raninder receives rousing reception

Hundreds accompany Congress candidate on his way to Takht Damdama Sahib

Congress candidate from Bathinda Raninder Singh managed to pull a huge crowd on his way to Takht Damdama Sahib from Patiala on Wednesday.

Yuvraj, as he is fondly called, formally kick-started his campaign by paying obeisance at Takht Damdama Sahib. He faces Harsimrat Badal, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and daughter-in-law of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The number of supporters swelled at an exponential rate the moment he entered the constituency from Mansa and headed towards Talwandi Sabo via Sardulgarh.

More than 10-kilometre-long cavalcade accompanied Raninder, as he drove towards Talwandi Sabo. The vehicles moving in four parallel lanes moved at a snail’s pace. The intensity of his crowd-puller instinct could be gauged from the fact that the cavalcade, which consisted of hundreds of vehicles, took more than 40 minutes to cover a distance of 7 kilometers- from a point near Jaga Ram Tirath to Talwandi Sabo.

The motorcade received a rousing reception at Jaga Ram Tirath, though he was four hours behind schedule. An elderly person was heard saying, “The delay is understandable due to overwhelming response Yuvraj was receiving on the way.” Another spectator said, “It’s worth the wait.”

Dressed in white kurta-pajama, Raninder sat on top of an open vehicle and waved incessantly to supporters on the way. All the eight Congress MLAs from the parliamentary constituency – Ajit Inder Singh Mofar (Sardulgarh), Gurpreet Kangar (Rampura Phul), Harminder Jassi (Bathinda), Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu (Talwandi Sabo), Ajaib Singh Bhatti (Nathana), Mangat Rai Bansal (Budhlada), Makhan Singh (Pacca Kalan) and Sher Singh Gagowal (Mansa) – moved with Raninder.

Amritsar, Jan 5 (ANI): The 343rd birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru Sri Guru Govind Singh is being celebrated today with great fervour.

Devotees began thronging at the ”Golden Temple” here to pray and to listen to Shabad Kirtans.

” We celebrate this day as ”Gurupurab”. A religious procession is taken out on this occasion, devotees sing religious hymns. It is a secular day and people from all walks of life take part in the celebrations,” said Surinder Singh, a devotee.

A free community kitchen has also been arranged on the occasion.

“Since yesterday night all of us were excited about the festival and a large number of devotees have been thronging the Gurudwara to seek the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh. Devotees are standing in long queues and they  are taking part in community kitchens also,” said Jaswinder Singh Jassi, information officer of the Golden Temple.

Guru Govind Singh, a warrior-martyr, a poet and a social reformer, all rolled in one, was born at Patna Sahib in 1666.

He moulded the Sikh religion into its present form with the formation of the Khalsa. All members of the “Khalsa” sect have to possess the five K”s – “Kes” (long hair), “Kangha” (comb), “Kirpan” (dagger), “Kachha” (shorts) and “Kara” (steel bracelet).

The Guru”s birth anniversary commemorates his brave deeds to counter the Mughal might in the early part of 18th and the latter part of the 17th centuries. (ANI)
