Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in Bihar by-polls

Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats.

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad termed the results as referendum on the ruling government.

“It is not possible for the Bihar Government-led by Nitish Kumar to return. The RJD alliance will return to power. The people of Bihar have welcomed us with open arms,” said Yadav.

The RJD failed poorly in Lok Sabha election in April-May this year, winning just four seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. (ANI)

Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in by-polls in Bihar

Patna, Sep 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) celebrated its good show in state by-election on Thursday.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major setback to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party won two seats.

RJD activists gathered at the party office and burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win.

Rabri Devi, leader of opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, termed the results as referendum against the ruling government.

“Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar is fooling the public. The people of Bihar have understood it and that’s why they have rejected the ruling party. I congratulate the people of Bihar. I am sure that people will keep on voting for Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance,” said Devi.

Congress announces list of candidates for Bihar Assembly by-elections

New Delhi, Aug.23 (ANI): Congress party on Sunday announced the list of seven candidates for the upcoming State Assembly by-elections in Bihar.

The party has decided not to get into any alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) during the by-elections and decided to go it alone.

According to an official release issued by the Central Election Committee in-charge Oscar Fernandes on Sunday, Pheku Ram will contest from Bochaha assembly segment in Muzaffarpur and Noor Alam from Aurai seat in the same district.

The other candidates are Mukund Kumar from Kalyanpur, Anita Ram from Warisnagar, Parshuram Tiwari from Ramgarh in Kaimur, Shah Nawaj Khan from Chainpur (Kaimur) and Murari Prasad Gautam from Chenari in Rohtas.

During last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party contested the polls alone and won two of the 40 seats in the state.

Over a dozen assembly seats in Bihar fell vacant following the election of sitting MLAs as MPs in the last Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress Party, meanwhile, has also announced name of Tilottama Sharma as its candidate from the Dwarka assembly seat in Delhi.

The seat fell vacant as the sitting MLA Mahabal Mishra was elected to the Lok Sabha from Delhi West parliamentary constituency. (ANI)

Lalu says will offer unconditional support to UPA government

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad today said he would lend unconditional support to the UPA Government.

After attending a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Lalu said he is ready to offer unconditional support to the government.

“And, we said this in the meeting as well,” he added.

When asked about his role in the Cabinet, Lalu said: “Nothing of this sort has been decided yet.”

Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Lalu had earlier admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.

The RJD won just four seats this time compared to 22 in 2004. (ANI)

Talking to reporters, Paswan said, “I am happy that the secular front will be forming the government and the NDA’s plans have failed.”

“We have done our job. Nobody in Hajipur can say that Paswan has not worked for the development of Hajipur,” he added.

Paswan accepted defeat to former Chief Minister Ram Sundar Das of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U). (ANI)

Chidambaram loses in Sivaganga, seeks repoll

Sivaganga, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has lost the elections in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga parliamentary constituency to his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) rival Raja Kannappan.

According to sources, a repoll has been ordered in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shatrughan Sinha has won the Patna seat, beating his rival and television actor Shekhar Suman of Congress.

In Ghaziabad, BJP President Rajnath Singh has won, while Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad has managed to win only the Saran seat.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamta Banerjee has won the South Kolkata seat, beating her nearest rival Robin Deb of CPI-M.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has lost against the Janata Dal-United’s (JD-U) Ram Sundar Das in Bihar’s Hajipur parliamentary constituency.

BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has won the Amritsar seat, beating O. P. Soni of the Congress.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Prada has won the Rampur seat, while Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda beat his nearest rival Nafe Singh Rathi of INLD by over four lakh votes in the Rohtak constituency. (ANI)

Paswan terms Nitish’s demand for ‘Special Status’ as ‘drama’

Patna, May 15 (ANI): Hours later Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanded ‘Special Status’ for his state, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan termed his demand as ‘drama’.

“Kumar’s demand for a special category status is mere drama. Whoever is making this demand is trying to hide his own weaknesses. Development has never been an issue for him,” Paswan told reporters here.

When asked what the Fourth Front do after declaration of the Lok Sabha results, Paswan said he would speak to the media only after discussions with alliance partners.

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar said that he would support that government which gives ‘Special Status’ to Bihar. He also went on to say that Bihar will be the deciding factor post polls, when the election results will be out.

Speaking at a book function here, Kumar said that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, had so far refused to give Bihar a ‘Special Status’.

He also said that the option of who will become the Prime Minister and who will be made Prime Minister is still open. (ANI)

‘Lotus will not be allowed to bloom,’ says Paswan

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The “lotus will not be allowed to bloom” at the Centre at any cost, said Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan.

“We will not support BJP at any cost to form a government and will make all efforts to ensure that a secular government is formed,” he told reporters on Friday.

Paswan also confirmed that he had had meetings with Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Ajit Singh.

LJP secretary general Abdul Khaliq dismissed any possibility of his party switching over to the NDA and downplayed the issue of NDA leaders calling up Paswan.

When asked whether he was still with the UPA, Paswan said: “I am in UPA and also a Minister in the government.” Asked if he would remain in UPA, he said there were two possibilities that could emerge.

“If UPA can get majority, there will be no problem. The other scenario is the UPA does not get majority. In that situation, we three parties in the Fourth Front would jointly take a decision on the methodology of forming a secular government.”

Asked whether the results would have been better if the UPA allies had fought the polls jointly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Paswan said: “We wished all fought unitedly. But Congress preferred to contest the elections alone in the two states. But even then, our results will be good.”

“At this stage we want to clarify that LJP, RJD and SP will take decision as a bloc and not as individual parties. SP is not a part of UPA till now. But it will play and important role in forming the next government,” he said.

Regarding the relationship with the Left parties, Paswan said it was not bad, but cordial.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has rubbished reports of talking to or joining the BJP-led NDA or the UPA-led by the Congress.

The BSP said no secret meeting had taken place between party chief Mayawati and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

The BSP’s support is being considered crucial to both the BJP and the Congress.

Party insiders say that Mayawati would prefer “not to support a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government that would antagonise Muslim voters.”

The BSP is tipped to get around 30 seats.

In Andhra Pradesh, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Friday said it is keeping its doors open for post-poll alliances.

“Any political party has to act in such a way that it should never close any doors post-elections. PRP is also doing the same thing,” PRP general secretary Allu Aravind told reporters here when asked whether it will align with Congress.

Arvind also took a dig at the Third Front and said it was a “fractured front at present as one of its members has packed and taken his baggage out of it” in a apparent reference to the TRS, which switched sides to NDA recently.

There is intense speculation that Congress is trying to reach out to Chiranjeevi to get his support both at the state and the Centre. (ANI)

Speculation on post polls prospects

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): CPI (M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury has that its party would decide on any post-poll alliance only after the results were out.

“We will decide on our future prospects only after May 16,” he said.

The CPI (M) and other smaller parties have forged the ‘Third Front’ that challenges the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the party was confident of running a coalition government, but did not give any details about any possible shake-up.

“Whether individually or collectively we know very well how to conduct coalition ethics. We have done it successfully and will do it successfully. We will do this exercise after May 16,” said Singhvi.

Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) supremo Ram Vilas Paswan said that the coalition could take a call on support from the ‘Third Front’ if it fell short of a majority.

“If the United Progressive Alliance attains majority then there wouldn’t be any issue but in case if it doesn’t or a situation arises where we have to give or take support from the Third Front then a collective decision would be taken on it,” said Paswan.

So far, elections have been completed to 457 seats since the exercise began on April 16.

The counting of votes will take place on May 16. The 543-member House will be constituted before June 2. (ANI)

No fissure in LJP, RJD and SP alliance: LJP

New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): The LJP has rejected reports of any cracks in the Lok Janshakti Party, Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal coalition in UP and Bihar.

“We take exception to news reports carried in the media ascribing motives to absence of Ram Vilas Paswan from the rally held in Rampur on May 11,” LJP Secretary General Abdul Khaliq said.

Khalid said media was speculating too much in LJP chief Paswan’s absence from the Rampur rally, which was prescheduled.

“Ram Vilas Paswan had prior commitments scheduled for the day and the invitation for the rally was received much later. Therefore, it was not possible for him to reschedule commitments already made,” he said.

Leaders of all tree parties will hold a meeting on May 14 to discuss their “future course of action.”

“The leadership of the three constituents would discuss jointly and decide the strategy on the formation of a secular government at the centre after the polling gets over,” Khaliq said.

He added that the three coalition partners would jointly contest assembly polls in Bihar, Jharkhand and UP. (ANI)

Congress removes Moily from Media Chairman post

New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): Congress party removed its Media Chairman Veerappa Moily from the post, a day after he made strong remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar – emerging as Indian politics’ most-wanted.

Moily has been replaced by AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi, who had been holding the charge earlier.

According to party sources, Moily has been dropped from the post because “the party High Command is unhappy with his stand on some critical issues”, it’s clear the trigger was his speaking out of party’s line on Nitish Kumar.

On Friday, Moily said the Congress would not make a hero of Nitish Kumar who had rebuffed the party’s overtures to reach out to him.

He also accused the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of “insulting” the Congress over seat-sharing in Bihar.

“We should be more angry. We never wronged them. It’s only Paswan and Laluji for reasons best known to them, they left us only two seats,” Moily had said.

Lalu and Paswan, key members of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, seem annoyed over AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s praise of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

“What is the reality? Nitish Kumar is with the BJP. And if anybody wants to talk with Nitish, then first he has to leave the BJP. I don’t think that he will leave BJP,” Moily said. (ANI)

Paswan also to miss Cabinet meet, but says he and Lalu are with the UPA

Kolkata, May 8 (ANI): Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) supremo Ram Vilas Paswan has said that he too will miss out on Friday’s Union Cabinet meeting. Earlier, it was reported that Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav would also miss the meeting.

It was then reported that both had opted to skip the meeting as they were miffed with Congress general secretary Rahul gandhi’s overtures towards key rival in Bihar — Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Paswan, however, said that his party had no differences with the Congress and added that both the LJP and the RJD will remain with the UPA.

Paswan said he was staying away from the cabinet meeting in New Delhi because of a previous commitment in Kolkata.

“I have not skipped the cabinet meeting. I am not able to attend as a previous meeting was fixed in Kolkata,” Paswan said, responding to speculation that he was skipping the cabinet meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh because he was miffed with Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s praise of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He said, “We are already a part of the UPA and there is no question of drifting. The Left has reacted that there is no question of joining hands with the Congress. For us we have been a part of them and we will remain to be a part of the UPA.”

When asked whether there was any sort of misunderstanding with the Congress, the LJP supremo said, “There is no misunderstanding with the Congress because they have already clarified their stands.”

Also clarifying the reason for his and RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s absence from the Cabinet meet, he said, “We had already informed earlier that we will not be able to attend the meeting because of a programme we had fixed earlier in North Kolkata. There was no agenda from our ministries.” (ANI)

Patna, May 7 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav today said he was confident that his party would sweep in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Speaking after casting his vote, he said that the RJD in alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan would surprise everyone by sweeping the polls.

He cast his vote, along with his wife and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, elder son and daughters, at a polling station near Patna Veterinary College.

He is himself contesting from Patliputra constituency. Besides Lalu, other prominent among whose fate will be decided today included BJP’s Shatrughan Sinha and TV star Shekhar Suman of the Congress (Patna Saheb).

The counting of votes will take place on May 16.

Congress party candidate Ajay Maken woos joggers

New Delhi, Apr 25 (ANI): Congress party candidate Ajay Maken has attempted to woo joggers and walkers in New Delhi.

Maken, who was in Lodhi Gardens with supporters, said that the Congress was the best option for the people.

He addressed the gathering and said that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was the best choice for the Prime Minister.

“I just want to say that if you compare all the premiers of different countries of the world, you will find that the most qualified of them is Dr. Manmohan Singh.”

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, while addressing a rally in Mumbai with Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh, Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan hit out at the Bhartiya Janata Party saying that the BJP had lost all their allies.

“It is not written in Advani’s destiny to be the Prime Minister. Where is the NDA today? Jayalalitha, Naveen Patnaik, Mamata Banerjee and Farooq Abdullah have left. There is no one left in the NDA,” said Lalu. (ANI)

RJD-LJP alliance will be uprooted from Bihar: Nitish Kumar

Patna, Apr 24 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal- United leader Nitish Kumar on Friday said the RJD-LJP alliance would be uprooted from Bihar after general elections.

“The RJD-LJP alliance would face a rout in the state in the general elections. There is a strong anti-Lalu and anti-Paswan wave blowing across Bihar, as people want to see a change in governance at the Centre. It is now clear that the LJP-RJD combine will be uprooted from Bihar after general elections,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here.

Kumar also said that Lok Janshakti Party’s chief Ram Vilas Paswan would lose the Hajipur parliamentary constituency this time.

“Just as the people of Hajipur selected Paswan in 1977 with record margin, 2009 will see him rejected with the same margin.

JD (U)’s Ram Sunder Das would definitely win this time. (ANI)

Save me from Pappu Yadav, says CPI-M leader’s widow

Patna, April 20 (IANS) The widow of slain Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Ajit Sarkar, who is fighting the Lok Sabha polls from Purnia in Bihar, has urged the Election Commission to provide her adequate security against her husband’s alleged murderer and MP Pappu Yadav.

Madhavi Sarkar, contesting as a Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) candidate, has told the poll panel that she feels threatened by Pappu Yadav, formerly of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

‘I have told the Election Commission that a free Pappu Yadav is a serious threat to my life. Anything can happen to me. Even the local police are helpless,’ Madhavi told IANS on telephone.

Madhavi’s husband, who was locked in a feud with Pappu Yadav over farm labourers, was shot dead with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman in Purnia, about 350 km from here, on June 14, 1998.

Pappu Yadav, elected to the Lok Sabha from Madhepura in 2004, was held guilty of Sarkar’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court last year. The Patna High Court granted him bail two months ago.

He is now busy campaigning in the constituency for his mother Shanti Priya Devi, an independent candidate who enjoys Congress support.

‘Pappu Yadav is posing a serious threat to peace in Purnia. Free, fair and peaceful polling is not possible unless he is put behind bars,’ said Madhavi.

Earlier this month, the Patna High Court rejected Pappu Yadav’s plea to suspend his conviction in the murder case so that he could contest the Lok Sabha election.

After he was barred from contesting, Pappu Yadav revolted against the Lalu Prasad-Ram Vilas Paswan alliance and vowed to campaign for the Congress. He was expelled from RJD earlier this month.

His wife Ranjita Ranjan, a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP, has also defected to the Congress to contest from Supaul constituency.

Now, Paswan holds Congress culpable in Babri demolition

Patna, April 20 (IANS) Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan Monday defended his Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) colleague Lalu Prasad’s statement that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were responsible for the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid.

‘What wrong has he (Lalu Prasad) said,’ Paswan asked.

Taking a further dig at the Congress, which leads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of which both Lalu Prasad and Paswan are key members, Paswan said about the political situation in his constituency Hajipur: ‘What is the Congress doing? When they know that they cannot garner even 2,000 votes in Hajipur, why did they put up a candidate against me? What strength are they trying to prove?’

The RJD and the LJP fell out with the Congress over the issue of seat sharing in Bihar — a miffed Congress went ahead to contest Bihar on its own while the RJD and the LJP tied up with the Samajwadi Party to form an electoral alliance for the 120 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Widening the gulf with the Congress, Lalu Prasad had said April 17 in Darbhanga in Bihar that the Congress was responsible for the demolition of the Babri mosque.

‘The Congress failed to protect the Babri Masjid as it did nothing to prevent it. Not only the BJP, the Congress is also equally responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.’

A large mob converged in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and destroyed the 16th century mosque Dec 6, 1992, claiming it was built at the very place where Lord Ram was born. The Narasimha Rao led-Congress government was then in power in New Delhi while Kalyan Singh presided over a BJP government in Lucknow.

While Congress wondered why Lalu Prasad had kept quiet about it so long, the BJP said the Congress, the RJD and the Samajwadi Party were playing politics on the Ayodhya issue to cater to a particular vote bank.

Samajwadi Party to join new govt., if voted to power

Allahabad, Apr 20 (ANI): The Samajwadi Party has said that it would join the government if the coalition came back to power.

“I am also saying that I will not repeat my mistake, either I will participate in the Central Government or sit in opposition. I won’t repeat my role as a middleman,” said Mulayam Singh Yadav, chief of Samajwadi Party.

Though an UPA ally, SP and two other regional parties — the Rashtriya Janta Dal and Lok Janshakti Party-have formed an ‘alliance within an alliance’.

SP came to the rescue of the UPA after its Communists allies pulled out over the India-US civil nuclear deal last year. (ANI)
