The administration had imposed prohibitory orders to stop the protest march.

Abdul Rashid Jan, an agitating employee said that the aim of the protest was to press their demand for confirmation of their posts.

J and K HC orders exhumation of Shopian rape victims bodies

Srinagar July 4 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed state police to exhume the bodies of the victims of rape and murder in Shopian for fresh post mortem.

The court also ordered that no person, including security personnel could leave Shopian without special permission. The order is binding on personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Jammu and Kashmir State Police.

A two-judge division bench of the J and K High Court, comprising Chief Justice Barin Gosh and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, issued the orders after hearing a PIL filed by the Kashmir Bar Association.

Amid massive demonstrations across the Valley, police registered a case of rape and murder. They have not named any suspects.

Now, Cheney backs Jeb Bush for president

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Former US Vice President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday he would back former Florida Governor Jeb Bush if he decided to run for president.

“I like Jeb. I think he’s a good man. I’d like to see him continue to stay involved politically. I’d probably support him for president,” Cheney said during an interview with Fox News.

Cheney insisted that he’s “not in the business of endorsing anybody at this point,” but said that he’s “a big fan of Jeb’s.”

As for Jeb’s older brother, George W. Bush, Cheney said that he has not spoken to the former president in recent weeks

“He and I have had a number of conversations on the telephone since Jan. 20,” But, Cheney added, “It has been a couple of weeks.”

Cheney did not describe the nature of his talks with Bush, saying they “were private in the White House and remain so today.”

The former vice president has recently been one of President Barack Obama’s harshest critics, suggesting that the new administration has made the country less safe for dismantling Bush-era national security policies. (ANI)

So we decided that we will establish a very good institution here. And the students are getting training outside Kashmir; they are being trained there.

Now we have established an institution here and we will provide them, more sophisticated training than outside,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a trainer at the airhostess academy.

The setting up of the training institution for women and the response from the people marks an important milestone in Kashmir. (ANI)

Dutch Royal parade attack suspect dead

Amsterdam (The Netherlands), May 1 (ANI): A man, who killed five people and injured 13 in an attempt to kill members of the Dutch royal family, has died, according to media reports.
The suspect, a 38-year-old identified by Dutch media as Karst Tates, had been in critical condition since the attack during the Netherlands Queen’s Day holiday yesterday.

According to Sky News, before his death, he reportedly confessed to police that his actions were aimed at the royal family.

Tates rammed his car into the foot of a monument after mowing down people gathered for the annual royal procession in the central city of Apeldoorn.

Twelve people remain in hospital after Tates drove through police barricades towards the bus carrying members of the royal family.

It is believed his vehicle had been stopped and turned back earlier in the day by police.

But it remains unclear how he was able to breach security and charge through barriers, police lines and the crowds and almost reach the royal parade itself.

Queen Beatrix, who witnessed the event, told the nation in an unscheduled televised address that she was “speechless that something so terrible could have happened”.

Official celebrations were cancelled in many areas, and the national flag was flown at half mast at the royal palace at Apeldoorn.

TV footage showed Tates black Suzuki Swift, with its roof and bonnet already crumpled from smashing through police barriers, racing past the royal bus in bright sunshine and slamming into a column.

Other film showed bodies being hurled into the air and members of the royal family covering their faces in shock and dismay.

“I think that it has become clear that this happened with premeditation,” Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said.

Shortly before the attack, the Queen, her son Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his popular Argentine-born wife, Princess Maxima, had walked up to the crowd behind police barricades, accepting flowers and shaking hands. (ANI)

DBS gains 3.5 pct; investors focus on bank rally

* Investors focus on bank rally, put faith in chairman

* Analysts call for CEO who could ride out turmoil

* Finmin says DBS should not rush on new CEO (Adds analysts comments)

By Saeed Azhar

SINGAPORE, April 13 (Reuters) – Shares of DBS, Southeast Asia’s biggest bank, rose 3.5 percent on Monday, as a broad rally in banks offset news of the death of CEO Richard Stanley, and investors showed faith in the bank’s experienced chairman.

Analysts said DBS (DBSM.SI), may take time to select a new CEO who could steer the bank through a global economic downturn that has badly affected its two key markets in Singapore and Hong Kong.

“The key element would be to find someone who could drive DBS through the current turmoil and position the bank to take advantage of the opportunities that the turmoil is throwing up,” said an analyst at a foreign bank, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the news.

Stanley, the former chief of Citigroup’s (C.N) China operations, was widely expected to boost DBS’s China business and pursue acquisitions beyond its key markets, which eluded his predecessor. But instead of buying banks, he opted to build DBS’s existing businesses in China, Indonesia, Taiwan and India.

“We never got a sense he wanted to aggressively go into China,” said David Lum, an analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research. “His focus was on organic growth and he wanted to boost market share in Hong Kong and Singapore.”

Most analysts said investors trust the bank’s current chairman Koh Boon Hwee to lead DBS while the board searches for a successor. Koh has taken on a more active management role since DBS announced in January that Stanley had leukemia.

Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratham told the state broadcaster that DBS, which is 28 percent-owned by state investor Temasek [TEM.UL], should not rush its search for a new chief.

“The senior management had been running the bank, putting all their time into it. That is the way it will continue for a while, while they embark on a search,” he said. “This is something the board has to decide on, but I do not think there is a need for them to rush.”

Stanley, a 48-year-old American, joined DBS last May. He had been suffering from leukemia and died on Saturday from an infection.

PRESS DIGEST – Washington Post – April 11

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) – The Washington Post included the following items on its front page on April 11 Reuters has not verified these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.

WASHINGTON – Senior Obama administration officials are debating how to address a potential terrorist threat to U.S. interests from a Somali extremist group, with some in the military advocating strikes against its training camps. But many officials maintain that uncertainty about the intentions of the al-Shabab organization dictates a more patient, nonmilitary approach.

DALLAS – The U.S. presidency that is remembered on the street where former President George W. Bush now lives bears little resemblance to the one that most of the country continues to blame for its problems. Bush left Washington on Jan. 20 with two-thirds of Americans disapproving of his job performance. In his return to private life, Bush has maintained tranquillity by adhering to a basic philosophy: He lives squarely in the remaining 33 percent.

KABUL – When Afghanistan’s government quietly enacted a sweeping law last month restricting the rights of minority Shiite women, few Afghans were aware of what it said. But since the law’s contents became known here just over a week ago, it has provoked an extraordinary public debate on the once-taboo topic of religion and sex in this conservative Muslim nation and spurred an unprecedented protest by senior officials.

SAFFORD, Ariz. – April Redding was waiting in the parking lot of the middle school when she heard news she could hardly understand: Her 13-year-old daughter, Savana, had been strip-searched by school officials in a futile hunt for drugs. The lawsuit that April and Savana Redding brought over the incident carries the potential for redefining the privacy rights of students and the responsibility of teachers and school officials charged with keeping drugs off their campuses.

WASHINGTON – First, the frogs began disappearing, with as many as 122 species becoming extinct worldwide since 1980. Then honeybee colonies began to collapse. Scientists fear that bats might be next. For the past three years, biologists in Virginia have been nervously watching a strange die-off of bats in the Northeast as a mysterious fungus spread rapidly through hibernating bat colonies.

Not contesting elections due to surgery: PM

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday his recent heart surgery was the main reason he was not contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

‘The fact is that I had recently undergone surgery. I need to take time to recover to full vigour and that is the prime reason (for not contesting the elections),’ Singh told a large group of women journalists in a rare interaction.

Manmohan Singh underwent multiple coronary bypass surgery in January, due to which he had even missed the Jan 26 Republic Day celebrations.

The prime minister also took umbrage at Bharatiya Janta Party leader L. K. Advani taunting him for not contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

‘There have been (other) PMs from the Rajya Sabha. Advani has to amend the constitution to ensure that his wishes prevail. Indira Gandhi had been (PM) for one-and-a-half years, H.D. Deve Gowda, I.K. Gujral too (while being members of the Rajya Sabha),’ Manmohan Singh pointed out.

Advani has suggested that the constitution be amended to ensure that only a member of the Lok Sabha can become the prime minister

TIMELINE – Iran’s nuclear programme

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will inaugurate the country’s first nuclear fuel production complex later on Thursday, an Iranian official told Reuters.

Iran said earlier it would review an offer of talks on its nuclear programme from the United States and five other world powers.

Details of Iran’s nuclear programme first emerged in Aug. 2002 when the exiled opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran reported the existence of a uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and a heavy water plant at Arak. Here is a timeline of Iran and its nuclear programme in the last two years.

April 18, 2007 – IAEA says Iran has started up more than 1,300 centrifuge machines in an accelerating campaign to lay a basis for “industrial scale” enrichment in the Natanz complex.

Nov. 2 – Six powers — Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China — agree to push ahead with more sanctions.

Dec. 3 – A U.S. National Intelligence Estimate says Iran put its bid to build a nuclear bomb on hold in 2003 and it remains on hold. Two days later Ahmadinejad declares victory over the United States and IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei says Iran has been “somewhat vindicated”.

Dec. 11 – The opposition NCRI says Iran did shut down its programme in 2003 but restarted it a year later. The group says recent U.S. analysis gives the wrong impression.

Jan. 11-12, 2008 – ElBaradei makes a rare visit to Tehran to push for swifter cooperation in wrapping up the IAEA inquiry.

March 3 – U.N. Security Council adopts a third sanctions resolution targeted at Iran’s nuclear programme.

July 19 – Iranian officials rule out any freeze in uranium enrichment during talks in Geneva on the programme, attended for the first time by a senior U.S. diplomat.

Aug. 2 – An informal deadline lapses for Iran to respond to an offer from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia for talks on its disputed nuclear programme.

Aug. 5 – Iran delivers a letter to world powers but gives no concrete reply to a demand to freeze its nuclear activity, a defiant step the U.S. says amounts to obfuscation. The next day the U.S. and Britain say major powers agreed to consider more U.N. sanctions.

Sept. 15 – The IAEA says Iran has blocked a U.N. inquiry into whether it researched ways to make a nuclear bomb as Britain said it would push hard for tougher sanctions.

Nov. 26 -Iran says it is now running 5,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges, signalling an expansion of work the West fears is aimed at making nuclear weapons.

– This is higher than the 3,800 such machines the IAEA cited in a Nov. 19 report, which was based on a visit by its inspectors to Iran’s Natanz enrichment plant on Nov. 7.

Feb. 5, 2009 – Russia says it plans to start up a nuclear reactor at the Bushehr plant by the end of 2009.

Feb. 19 – A new IAEA report shows a significant increase in Iran’s reported stockpile of low-enriched uranium since November to 1,010 kg, enough, some physicists say, for possible conversion into high-enriched uranium for one bomb.

Feb. 25 – Iran denies it has slowed down its nuclear activities and says it plans to install 50,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium over the next five years.

March 20 – New U.S. President Barack Obama calls for “engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect”. Iran cautiously welcomes the overture, saying it wanted to see “practical steps”.

April 8 – The U.S. takes another tentative step toward better ties with Iran to become a full participant in nuclear talks with Tehran, but it shows no sign of a detente.

April 9 – Iran says Ahmadinejad will inaugurate the country’s first nuclear fuel production complex.

ICRC says has not had ransom demand in Philippines

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday it had not received any ransom demands from Islamist militants holding two European staff in the Philippines.

But a Red Cross statement said its policy was not to pay for the release of its aid workers.

A Philippines military report seen by reporters in Manila on Tuesday said that the Abu Sayyaf group that kidnapped three ICRC workers on Jolo on Jan. 15 had demanded a $5 million ransom.

The rebels had threatened to behead one of the hostages. One of them, Filipina Mary Jean Lacaba, was freed in early April but Swiss national Andreas Notter and Italian Eugenio Vagni are still being held.

“I would like to make it very clear that since the very beginning of the hostage crisis the ICRC has never received any such (ransom) demands,” said Alain Aeschlimann, head of ICRC operations for East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

As far as the neutral humanitarian agency was aware, the abductors have only been repeating their demand for a troop pullout, he said in a statement posted on its website www.icrc.org.

“As a matter of policy, the ICRC does not pay ransoms when its staff are kidnapped,” Aeschlimann said.

Making an exception to the ICRC’s longstanding policy might endanger its security and capacity to work in conflict zones worldwide, including the Philippines.

“We remain hopeful that a positive resolution of the crisis can be achieved and are sparing no effort to this end,” he said.

The Geneva-based ICRC repeated its appeal for the hostages to be released immediately and unconditionally. Aeschlimann urged all involved to avoid taking any action that could put the hostages’ lives at risk.

From Milan to Marathwada

FROM THE and #252;ber-chic environs of Milan amid fashion luminaries like Georgio Armani and Gianni Versace to the dustbowls of Marathwada slugging it out with politicians double her age, 27-year-old Preeti Shinde has made a reverse journey of sorts. Shinde, an MBA in Fashion Marketing from the Milan-based Insituto Europeo di Design, seems to be an unlikely candidate for the general elections in Nanded, where the only fashion accessories are multi-coloured bandanas people tie to escape the heat wave.

However, Shinde, as a Lok Sabha candidate from Vinay Kore’s Jan Surajya Party, is giving established politicians in Nanded sleepless nights, as she takes on CM Ashok Chavan’s brother-in-law Bhaskarrao Bapurao Khatgaonkar, in the CM’s home turf of Nanded. A fiery orator who is proficient in Marathi as well as Italian, Shinde is the daughter of ex-IPS officer Madhu Shinde and was born in Jalgaon but has spent the bulk of her life in Mumbai.

After completing her masters in Political Science, Shinde went to Italy to complete her MBA. After returning from Italy, she had been working with a textile firm, Alok Industries, as an assistant sourcing manager. A chance meeting with the 37-year-old Vinay Kore, the chief patron of Jan Surajya Party and cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government, however, made her decide to take the plunge in electoral politics.

“We all tend to live insulated lives, not understanding what goes on in far away areas. I always wanted to do something for the nation.

However, it was only after meeting Kore that I decided to turn my words into action,” says Shinde. Kore decided to field Shinde as one of the two candidates of the party and asked Shinde to shift base to Nanded and work with the party cadre.

In her three-month stay at Nanded, Shinde claims to have visited close to 800 hamlets and settlements in her constituency. However, many voters believe that Shinde may not emerge triumphant in the elections, but her presence has forced established politicians work harder to woo the voters.

“The voters of Nanded didn’t have an option apart from the two main political parties, both of whom have failed in developing this area. Shinde provides us an alternative to them,” says Shankar Waghmare, a voter from the constituency.

Shinde, however, believes that she is in the race to win. “I had read somewhere that Bharat and India are two different ideas.

The India of the city’s middle class is pitched against the Bharat of the village folk. My aim is to work towards making these two ideas come together and strive for inclusive growth of everyone.

Senior Fatah, Hamas leaders meet in Gaza

Gaza, April 9 (DPA) Leaders of the rival Hamas and Fatah movements held a meeting in Hamas-ruled Gaza Wednesday to discuss reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and mutual reconciliation.

The meeting between the two movements’ leaders is the first of its kind since Hamas’s takeover of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007 following weeks of bloodshed between the two groups’ warring militants.

Four Fatah leaders, headed by Abdallah el-Ifranji arrived at the office of Hamas spokesman in Gaza Ayman Taha to hold talks with four Hamas leaders headed by senior Hamas leader Salah el-Bardawil.

On Tuesday, Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sent el-Ifranji and another Fatah leader to the Gaza Strip to look at the damage caused by a 22-day Israeli military offensive on the enclave that ended Jan 18.

A series of talks were held in Cairo last month between the two movements as well as with leaders of other Palestinian factions, but these failed to agree on the outstanding issues, mainly the formation of a new unity government.

After Hamas took control of Gaza, Abbas sacked the Hamas national unity government and nominated a new government headed by Salam Fayyad. Hamas kept its government in Gaza and rejected Abbas’ decree.

Fatah and Hamas have also agreed to hold another meeting in Cairo April 26.
