Chelsea joins Manchester City for Milner bid

London, May 21(ANI): Premier League champions Chelsea has joined Manchester City in the fight to sign Aston Villa midfielder James Milner.

Milner has two years left on his 40,000 pounds-a-week contract, but Villa manager Martin O’Neill wants to open talks on a new deal after the World Cup.

Chelsea insiders claim that the club is ready to go the distance for Milner after missing out to City on Brazilian striker Robinho two summers ago.

“Losing out to City for Robinho was embarrassing at the time, even if it did turn out to be a lucky escape,” The Sun quoted a Chelsea insider, as saying.

“But we are determined to get our man this time and we are very confident it will happen,” he added.

City are believed to have had an initial bid of 25 million pounds rejected by Villa, and have tabled a second offer of 30 million pounds. (ANI)

Aston Villa rejects Man City’s 25-mn pound bid for Milner

London, May 20 (ANI): Aston Villa has rejected Manchester City 25 million pound bid for James Milner, and now plans to negotiate a new long-term deal with the England midfield ace.

The Sun reports that Villa boss Martin O’Neill would still struggle to hold on to the player.

The deal was worth an initial 20 million pounds with a further five million pounds of add-ons for success and appearances.

Both Villa owner Randy Lerner and manager O’Neill have been adamant that Milner, 24, is not for sale.

In a statement Villa said: “We have received an offer from Manchester City and this has been firmly rejected. We plan to sit down with James and his representative after the World Cup to agree a new, long-term deal.”

Milner learned of City’s move on Wednesday at England’s training camp in Austria, the paper said.

Mancini has up to 150 million pounds to spend this summer as he tries to build a side for a Premier League title push next season, it adds. (ANI)

Remarkable Lampard just keeps on giving for Chelsea

Pipped as Chelsea’s player of the year by Didier Drogba and somehow left out of the Premier League team of the year, Frank Lampard nevertheless remains the most important player in his club’s title-winning season.

James Milner, Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher — all chosen ahead of Lampard in his fellow professionals’ team of the season — have their talents but if you asked 100 managers which midfielder they would prefer in their team you could reasonably expect a landslide victory for the Chelsea man.

Perhaps because he scores so many goals every year people forget what a rare talent Lampard possesses and this season he has surpassed even his own high standards.

He has scored 27 goals, including 22 in the league. Even with 10 of them coming via penalties, that is an astonishing figure for a midfielder and maintains a stunning average of more than 20 goals a season for the past six years.

As well as his uncanny ability to drift into scoring positions Lampard has his fair share of assists and also exerts a calming, authoritative presence.

His self-control is also exemplary as this season he has not collected a single red or yellow card.

Listed as one of Jose Mourinho’s “untouchables” four years ago, Lampard continues to defy the cult of rotation.

This season he played in 36 of Chelsea’s 38 league games, in all five rounds of the FA Cup as well as six Champions League games.

At 31 he remains one of the fittest players in the league and it is no co-incidence that so many of his goals come in the last 20 minutes of games.

His timing has been key in the wider picture too as he produced a goal rush just when Chelsea needed it.

Since the 1-1 draw seven weeks ago at Blackburn Rovers that seemed to hand the title initiative to Manchester United, Lampard has scored 11 goals in nine games, including a remarkable four in the 7-1 rout of Aston Villa.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti, like all his Chelsea predecessors in the last nine years, recognises that Lampard is an extraordinary talent.

“He has scored more than 20 goals and has shown everything,” said the Italian. “Strong character, he never misses a training session, he has played with consistency. I think he gets over eight out of 10 every time and I never give 10 out of 10.”

Ray Wilkins, Chelsea’s midfield maestro in the days when there was nobody to pass to, is also a huge admirer.

“When you see the goals Frank has scored and the level he has played to then you have to say he is world class,” said Ancelotti’s assistant.

“He has the ability to get forward but also the ability to get back and defend. He trains exactly the same as he plays and if there are any young kids listening to what I am saying about Frank, then this is the example to follow.”

Player of the Year Rooney allays World Cup fears

London, Apr 26 (ANI): Allaying fears over his fitness for the World Cup, ace striker Wayne Rooney Cup has declared that he will return for Manchester United’s potentially decisive final Premier League game of the season against Stoke City on May 9.

After picking the PFA Player of the Year Award, Rooney said: “I’m fine. I’ll be all right for the World Cup. In fact, I’ll be ready for the Stoke game.”

United feared Rooney, suffering from groin and ankle problems, would miss the title run-in.

Rooney paid tribute to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he picked up his trophy, with the Young Player of the Year award going to James Milner.

“Sir Alex is a great manager who has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players. It’s great to see he’s pushing 70 and hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sure he’ll be here for a long time yet,” he said.

Rooney has undergone a gruelling 55-game season and his old knee injury has also flared up again, The Sun reports.

United No.2 Mike Phelan admitted that the latest injury setbacks have been brought on through sheer exhaustion for Rooney.

“He has a groin problem and that is possibly due to fatigue. He’s had a fantastic season and these things creep up on you now and again. Wayne has just suffered in the past two to three weeks,” Phelan said. (ANI)

Rooney bags Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year award

London, Apr 26 (ANI): England’s ace striker Wayne Rooney has been voted player of the year by his peers in the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Rooney, who has scored 34 goals this season, beat off competition from Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Manchester City forward Carlos Tévez.

“It’s a great feeling to win because it”s voted for by the players. It’s a great honour and I’m really proud,” Rooney, 24, said.

Aston Villa’s James Milner won the young player of the year award.

Rooney has improved his game tremendously at Old Trafford this season after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The 24 year-old was anxious to pay credit to Ferguson’s role in his development and backed the Scot to continue in charge at Old Trafford for many seasons to come, The Telegraph reports.

“Sir Alex has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players. It’s great to see that he’s pushing 70 and hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sure he’ll be here for a long time yet,” he said. (ANI)

Achilles injury hurts Beckham’s Cup dream

David Beckham’s World Cup hopes hung in the balance after the England midfielder went off with a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon late in AC Milan’s 1-0 Serie A win over Chievo on Monday (AEDT).

Beckham was getting ready to kick a ball unchallenged when he suddenly pulled up and signalled to the bench despite second-placed Milan having used all their substitutes.

Beckham told the San Siro bench “It’s broken, it’s broken” as he came off. Team-mates said he was in tears in the dressing room.

“When the Achilles tendon goes you feel it straight away,” Milan coach Leonardo told reporters after his side moved one point behind leaders Inter Milan with 10 games left.

“The injury to David is upsetting. This injury lets me enjoy the win less.”

The 34-year-old Beckham, on loan at Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy chiefly to try to safeguard his England squad place for the World Cup in June, now faces a race to be fit for the tournament in South Africa.

Television analysts said Achilles injuries can take up to three months to heal, sometimes more.

England is well-covered on the right wing with Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips and James Milner among the players able to play there. Tottenham Hotspur’s Aaron Lennon is currently injured.

Beckham, a former captain who played at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is England’s most capped outfield player with 115 appearances.

Ferguson blames Wembley ‘ploughed field’ pitch for injuries to Owen, Rooney

London, Mar 6(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has condemned the condition of the Wembley pitch for ending his striker Michael Owen’s season and leaving Wayne Rooney injured.

Owen will have a hamstring operation on Monday after pulling up during last Sunday’s Carling Cup final, while Rooney could miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolves after playing two matches on the controversial surface in four days.

“I think Wembley”s a difficult pitch. I thought a horse show had been on it by the time I went on it. It reminded me of a ploughed field,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“I couldn”t believe the players had actually played on it,” he added.

Ferguson said the Wembley pitch had been partly to blame for Owen’s latest setback – ending any faint hopes he had of going to the World Cup.

“Owen is out for the rest of the season. It”s more serious than we thought and he”ll have an operation on Monday,” Ferguson said.

“It”s a terrible blow for the lad and disappointing for us, too. I think the heavy pitch at Wembley made some contribution to it, but it”s really just bad luck,” he added.

He further blamed Rooney for aggravating a knee problem by playing for England against Egypt on Wednesday rather than admitting he needed a rest.

“Playing on that pitch for almost an hour on Sunday and then almost the full 90 minutes on the Wednesday, it”s far too much. So he”s a doubt for the Wolves game,” Ferguson said.

Earlier, after Sunday”s Carling Cup final, Aston Villa midfielder James Milner had described the pitch as the worst playing surface he has encountered this season. (ANI)

Performance, not sympathy, behind Beckham’s inclusion in squad: Capello

London, Feb.11 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has rejected claims that David Beckham is in the side due to sympathy and his star status.

Capello said Bekham is in the national squad on performance.

He (Bekham) is in the side solely because he is a good player. He is not here for sympathy. I would never pick a player for those reasons,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

Capello has a tough task ahead while selecting players for the forthcoming fixtures as several other contenders knocking at door.

Riding on their superb performances in Germany last year, Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry have announced their readiness for the national call. While James Milner and Carlton Cole are two of the more interesting options available to the English coach.

Emile Heskey, who has been recuperating from an ankle injury, has also thrown-in his claim for the mid-field spot, which Frank Lampard is also eyeing. (ANI)
