Sharma to file nomination tomorrow in Jaipur

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma will be filing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jaipur tomorrow. Sharma, who has been made the Congress nominee for the elections to the RS from Rajasthan, would be reaching Jaipur today for early filing of his nomination tomorrow.

Later, he will be proceeding to Turkey to attend an international conference on security. The Congress High Command yesterday ended suspense over his nomination by fielding him in the Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan, two months after the expiry of his term in the House.

57-year old Sharma, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, shifts to Rajasthan as his party was not in a position to get him re-elected from his home state, where BJP runs the government. His term expired on April 2 and since then there was speculation over fielding him from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Sharma”s shifting to Rajasthan resulted in dashing the hopes of former Union Minister Santosh Bagrodia who failed to get renomination. This will be Sharma”s third term in the Upper House.

Oz players body terms IPL ‘unconfirmed’ blacklist threat ‘unfair’

Melbourne, Apr 20 (ANI): Reacting to unconfirmed reports, the Australian Cricketers’ Association has said it is unfair for players to be blacklisted by the Indian Premier League if they quit the tournament over security fears.

Twelve Australian players still have an involvement in the lucrative Twenty20 tournament, which on Saturday was marred by two crude bomb blasts outside Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium.

ACA chief executive Paul Marsh said the Australian contingent, which includes Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Matthew Hayden and Doug Bollinger, felt uneasy since Saturday’s blasts.

The unconfirmed reports of an edict circulated by the IPL that any players who left the tournament on security grounds would be disqualified from future tournaments complicated things, The Herald Sun reports.

Marsh was unsure whether the IPL threat existed, however, similar reports surfaced during the inaugural tournament in 2008 after blasts in Jaipur left more than 80 people dead.

Marsh said it was unreasonable for players to face the threat of future disqualification when security was a concern.

“You would hope that players wouldn’t be punished for making decisions based on very reasonable security grounds. Any human being should have the right to put their personal safety above any other consideration,” he said yesterday.

Marsh said players had welcomed the IPL’s decision to re-schedule the semi-finals to Mumbai, but admitted “there’s definitely a level of uneasiness” among the Australians still in India. (ANI)

Indian self-help group to provide artificial limbs to war victims in Iraq

New Delhi, March 15 (ANI): The famed artificial Jaipur Foot, which has enabled thousands of disabled people restart their lives in the country, is now all set to offer a healing touch to the victims in strife-torn Iraq.

On Monday, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi flagged off, a 22-member delegation of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) which embarked for Iraq where they will set up a camp.

Strife-torn Afghanistan has been sourcing artificial limbs from this Jaipur-based outfit to help war victims get rehabilitated.

“We are taking a team of 22 people to Iraq to fit 1000 amputees with “Jaipur Foot”, so that they can regain their mobility again and walk like you and me,” said D R Mehta, Founder and Chief Patron of BMVSS.

The NGO””s first “Jaipur Foot” camp in Kabul was held in 1996 at the behest of the Ministry of External affairs when it provided 1,105 artificial limbs.

Originally developed by a local orthopaedician Dr. Pramod Karan Sethi, a fellow of Britain””s Royal College of Surgeons, and a sculptor named Ram Chandra, the main advantage of this prosthesis is its lightness and mobility.

Sublimely low-tech, it is mainly made of rubber, wood and aluminium and can be assembled easily.

A person fitted with this limb can walk like a normal person without a stick or support, and even run, ride a bicycle and climb a tree because the Jaipur limb has a very comfortable stump socks interface.

Patients can, after the fitment, return to work in fields, factories, shops and offices.

The low cost of this artificial limb has made it extremely popular in Afghanistan. (ANI)

Rajasthan Govt directs public servants to pay proper respect to MPs, MLAs

Jaipur, Sep. 2 (ANI): In a bizarre move, the Rajasthan government has directed all the government employees to properly welcome and see off visiting MPs and MLAs.

Among other things, the directive requires government employees to stand up when a lawmaker comes to visit them.

“Respecting them is essential and usually they come to address the grievances of the common man and not with their own personnel issues. In our culture we usually stand up when someone visits us and welcoming someone by just sitting on our chairs is not a part of our culture,” said Ashok Bairwa, spokesman, Rajasthan government.

On their part, the government employees have reacted with mixed notions.

They have contended that there was no need for such an order as they were already respecting public leaders, in and out of office.

“There might be an instance because of which the government had to issue this order. We are not aware of any such instance. I personally feel that employees and officers of the district administration have never shown dissent or disrespect to them nor such a feeling like this has ever come into their minds,” said Gowri Shankar Soni, a government employee.

Many Congress party MPs and MLAs have often complained about indifference of bureaucrats and other staff members towards them. (ANI)

Students, wildlife activists spread awareness against cruelty to elephants

Jaipur, Aug 30(ANI): Hundreds of school students, animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts came together on Sunday to stage a mass rally through the streets of Jaipur to highlight the cruel treatment meted out to elephants by their owners and mahouts.

The peace procession follows the death of Naina, a 35-year-old elephant, which ran amok while ferrying a group of tourists on a joyride on August 23 and died a day later.

Naina was carrying the tourists to Amer Fort and suddenly turned aggressive although the tourists managed to escape by jumping down as soon as the Mahout lost control of the elephant.

The animal activists, some of them dressed as elephants, carried the symbolic ‘carcass’ of Naina on their shoulders and an earthen pot with smoke coming out of it like Hindus carry dead bodies to a cremation place for the final ritual.

The ‘carcass’ of Naina was placed on a symbolic pyre for the final ritual to create awareness against elephant cruelty.

“Our message is basically to reduce this violence against the elephants and to treat them as living beings. That’s basically peace, we are not doing any kind of protest. Our main aim is to create awareness and make sure that the animal gets some kind of at least basic care they need in Rajasthan weather, which they actually don’t belong to,” said Arjun, a wildlife activist.

The activists said that no lessons had been learnt since the death of Naina and the uncared elephants were still being used to ferry tourists.

“We basically want that the animal being provided (given) their true basic right to food, shelter and water which is not being provided. On top of that they are being used. When you are generating money out of using an elephant, which is providing you food and revenue, the basic thing you can do is to give the elephant sanitation and healthcare, which we are not providing. Elephants are made to work, cruelly chained and they are beaten up with an Ankush (trident like hook),” said Dr Rina Dey, an animal lover. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)

Students’ protest against alleged forced blood denotation in Rajasthan

Chomu (Rajasthan), Aug 22(ANI): Angry residents of Chomu, a town 60 km from Jaipur, took to streets on Saturday following reports that teenaged school children were allegedly forced to donate blood at a medical camp.

Student organisations Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised the protest march.

The protestors alleged that a ruling Congress party deputy had organised the blood donation camp to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi last Thursday (August 20) and that students below 18 years of age were forced to donate blood against their wishes.

Over 50 students from a state-run school had participated in the blood donation camp, and some of them alleged that they were forced to donate blood.

“They took out my blood. They told me that it just a blood test and I was forced to donate. They also beat up a lot of people who tried to protest,” said Tarachand, a student.

The incident came to light when a student named Mukesh fell ill after blood donation and was referred to a hospital in Jaipur. His condition was reported to be unstable.

“My child was admitted in the emergency ward of SMS hospital. But, later he was shifted to the general ward and is being given glucose. He is not talking and hasn’t come into consciousness. He has a severe pain in his head. He had a high fever last night,” said Om Prakash, father of Mukesh.

However, Congress party deputy Sahni denied the allegations saying that no one was forced to blood and termed the protest as a ploy to defame him.

“It was a blood donation camp and many school children gave blood. I read in the papers that a boy fell ill after giving blood. This incident has been hatched to defame me,” said Sahni n defense. (ANI)

Handicraft industry in Rajasthan explores domestic market to beat recession

Jaipur, Aug 20 (ANI): Battered by the economic slowdown, handicraft exporters in Rajasthan now look to the domestic market to survive through the crisis.

The Indian domestic market remained largely unaffected by the global meltdown as compared with the rest of the world.

To tap the domestic market, the Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters (FRHE) for the first time organised a three-day handicraft fair in Birla Auditorium of Jaipur to provide a platform to sellers and buyers of handicraft.

Sunday is the last day of the expo in which about 100 exhibitors have showcased their world-class quality items, including blue pottery, ceramics, clay items, traditional furnishing items, textiles, jewellery, furniture artifacts.

All such items, which till now used to be destined overseas are being offered in the local market to whole sellers, retailers and even individual buyers.

Local market has been never been so attractive for these sellers.

“When we were earlier exporting, we did not pay any attention to the Jaipur or local market. This time because of the economic slowdown, we are attracted to domestic market and exploring it. We think if we tap the domestic market, our handicraft will survive and it will grow,” said Pradeep Kumar Chabra, an exporter.

Dilip Vaid, Chairman, FRHE, visualises the domestic market to grow big in the next five years and many exporters will shift focus to domestic market from the international market.

“I will not be surprised when many exporters who call themselves as exporters will be focusing on domestic markets rather than international market. The best thing about our industry even in this difficult time is that every piece sold here has got a background of livelihood generated,” said Vaid.

India has about 10.5 million artisans who solely rely on the handicraft industry for their livelihood. They carry with them the traditional know-how of making artifacts passed down from one generation to the other.

These artifacts which reflect Indian culture and tradition are quite often adapted to meet the requirements of changing lifestyle of people without losing their characteristics.

“We are in a period where people need things which are utilitarian. People need objects, which are lifestyle products. People also want products, which are part of our social culture. Still in India the wedding, the home, the community and festival and we need objects for each period of this time. And the handicraft sector can answer this need which is there,” said Sangeeta Shroff, Director, Indian Institute of Crafts and Designs.

This year, the handicraft Industry in Rajasthan exported items worth Rs200 billion rupees handicraft and textile Rs150 billion less compared with the last fiscal year.

Exporters now feel that the Indian market has a great potential and if explored properly they can sail through the economic meltdown and maintain their profits. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)
