Fire kills one, three injured

New Delhi, June 5 — A person died and three others were seriously injured, after a fire broke out on Friday night in a four-storey footwear warehouse in northwest Delhi. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said the incident was reported from Jai Mata Market located in Keshavpuram’s A2 block at 11.30 p.m. “The fire broke out at a storage facility located in the building’s basement and soon enveloped the entire building,” said a senior DFS official. He said four labourers, who were sleeping on the ground floor were trapped, but were rescued as soon as possible. One of them, who is yet to be identified, died after falling unconscious due to the fumes and got burnt, the official said. Eight fire tenders were called to fight the fire. Residents, however, blamed a delay in the arrival of the fire tenders for the labourer’s death.

The DFS refuted his claims. “We had to take a six-km long detour to reach the area as a flyover is being constructed near Britannia Chowk. We reached the spot as soon as possible,” a DFS official said.

Silver foil making artisans battle for survival amidst diminishing profits

Jaipur, June 6 (ANI): The silver-foil making artisans of Jaipur are facing an unprecedented lean period and there seems to be no end in sight.

The famous ‘Vark’ makers of the Pink City have been registering poor collections because the price of their craftsmanship remains stagnant while that of its raw-material, silver, keeps fluctuating and has skyrocketed in the past few months.

“When the rate of silver goes high, then we face problems …the wage decreases…because the rate of silver may go up whereas the labourers” wages are fixed and the income decreases,” said Attah-Ullah Padal, owner of a silver foil making unit.

Silver prices in Jaipur almost touched rupees 30000 (640 US dollars) for a kilogram as compared to rupees 25000 (around 534 US dollars) over the past couple of months.

Ayurdvedic and Unani preparations also contain ‘Vark’ as it is believed that the silver possesses healing properties.

“There are many pharmaceutical companies such as Charak, Baidyanath, and other so many companies where the silver foil is used for medicinal purposes and foil from Jaipur is supplied to these companies,” said Gulam Ali Khan, supplier.

The popular ‘Vark’ has its biggest consumer base in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The 2,500 ‘Vark’ making artisans live in a colony named Pannighar first set up by Maharaja Jai Singh who ruled Jaipur around three centuries ago. (ANI)

Farmers protest against Hydro Power Project in Himachal

Rampur (HP), Sept 18 (ANI): Hundreds of residents and farmers here protested against the construction of run-of-river hydropower plant project on the river Satluj.

The campaigners called for Save Satluj drive and complained that the hydropower plant would disturb the ecological balance of the region.

“Our protest is to save our environment and our natural resources. They are being affected by the project. Because of this, the Sutlaj river will dry up, water mammals will die and the temperature of the region will also rise,” said Mohan Singh, a farmer.

Environmentalists believe that the 412MW Rampur hydropower project is not suitable to the fragile ecology of the region.

“The project will divert this river through the tunnel leaving the river bed dry which will disturb the ecological balance. This will not only affect the course of river but will also harm the crop grown in the area,” said Jai Chand, head of the Village Committee for Environment Protection.

The activists were protesting against the Rampur hydropower project authorities and the district administration.

The campaigners later staged a sit-in-protest outside the office of Sub-Divisional Magistrate demanding his intervention into the matter.

Rampur Hydropower Project will provide renewable and low carbon energy to the country’s over-stretched Northern Electricity Grid. (ANI)

The participants in these classes believe cardio tennis is much more fun than running on a treadmill.

Mumbai, July 8 (ANI): Azharuddin Ismail, child star of the Oscar-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and his family members looked happy as they stepped into their new house in an upmarket Mumbai suburb.

“I am feeling very happy in my new house,” said Ismail.

Ismail and his family moved into the 250 square foot ground floor flat, which is in a modern building complex, with electricity and running water. It is a short drive away from Juhu.

“It’s a very nice house and we are really happy. It’s nice that now our environment would change. We’ll have all the facilities of water and other necessities. I am really thankful to Danny Sir, director of the film that he provided us with a new house,” said Samina Banu, Ismail’s mother.

Ismail got his new home in an upmarket Mumbai suburb on Saturday.

The Jai Ho Trust, named after the film’s award-winning track and set up by the producers, bought the Rs.21 lakh home on Ismail’s behalf and will give it to him when he turns 18.

Ismail’s earlier dwelling, a tarpaulin and sheet hut, was demolished by the civic authorities in May as it was illegal.

The Jai Ho Trust is looking for a house for Ismail’s co-star Rubina Ali, who still lives in a slum with her family. (ANI)

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child star Azharuddin Ismail finally gets new home

Washington, July 6 (ANI): ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star Azharuddin Ismail has finally moved into his new home, after his shanty was demolished by Mumbai authorities.

Andhra takes to Jasmine cultivation

Krishnagiri (TN), June 21 (ANI): Grown extensively over almost 800 hectares of agricultural land in Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, Jasmine flower is changing the lives of the farmers exporting it to the Gulf countries.

Jasmine is easier and cheaper to grow. The flower is priced at almost 150 to 300 rupees per kilogram.

“We have nine acres of land on which we have planted jasmine flowers. We get a yield of around 100 to 150 kilograms of jasmine. We have a number of people working in the flowers garden. We fetch around Rupees 150 to 300 in the local markets,” said Saroja, a local farmer.

The government encourages the farmers by providing subsidies and modern technology. Besides, they also help the farmers market the produce.

“We encourage the farmers in the schemes and other aspects also, marketing aspects, storage aspects, about wholesale markets, and all this comes in the schemes, its not that we support farmers by only giving them subsidies and technical know-how’s we give them up support up to the marketing level,” said Surendaran, assistant director of horticulture department, Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

The farmers though want the government to extend financial assistance so as the area under flower cultivation increases. The farmers are also demanding setting up of cold storages so as to preserve the flowers for a longer time.

The flower industry in the state fetches almost three billion rupees per annum from foreign exports. Owing to the favourable weather, other than jasmine, tuberoses, roses, marigolds, chrysanthemums are also grown in the area. By Jai Kumar (ANI)

Roofless Slumdog kids express desire to keep both the houses

Mumbai, May 30(ANI): On being offered houses by Maharashtra government and the ‘Jai Ho’ trust, the child actors of Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ have expressed their desire to keep both the houses offered to them.

The Maharashtra government and Jai Ho trust had offered houses to Rubina Ali and Azharrudin Ismail after their slums were demolished by civic authorities.

“I want both the MHADA house and the ‘Jai Ho’ trust house. The house given by ‘Jai Ho’ trust is very nice. It is Santacruz and has bathroom, kitchen and is very big, I liked it a lot,” said Azharuddin.

However, the state authorities have clarified that the kids cannot keep both the houses, and they will have to choose between houses offered to them by the trust and the Maharashtra government.

Though Rubina expressed some concern about the government house being away from her school, she said she would take it anyway.

“I’ll take it but what they (state authorities) are giving is in very far off place. I’ll have to travel a long distance to come to my school here,” said Rubina.

While the kids want to keep both the houses, the parents are yet to decide as to which house to take.

“Whatever we get is acceptable to us. The government is also giving us rooms that we have not refused. I had gone to talk to the authorities and asked them for some time. Now Azhar’s family and my family, we will sit together and decide what to do,” said Rafiq Shaikh, Rubina’s father. (ANI)

Danny Boyle in India to help homeless child artistes of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

Mumbai, May 28 (ANI): Once under fire for not doing enough for its impoverished Indian child stars, the makers of Oscar winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ said that they had bought a flat for one of them whose shanty, unfortunately was demolished in Mumbai recently.

This was disclosed by Danny Boyle, director of the movie while interacting with media persons here on Wednesday.

Earlier, Boyle along with producer Christian Colson flew into Mumbai after pictures of Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali picking through the debris of their demolished homes, which the civic authorities had termed as illegal, were splashed by the media.

Smiling and hugging the children, Boyle said a home had been bought for Azharuddin Ismail (9), who played the character of Salim as a child in the movie.

Further, he mentioned that very soon, they would also buy one for Rubina Ali, who played the role of young Latika.

Boyle blamed the media for raising the expectations of families by sensationalising their joys and sorrows.

He also noted that they were given access to a world, an extraordinary and glamorous world, and they understandably want their lives to be completely transformed.

“It’s obviously a concern. We have been trying for a long time to move them into legal accommodation. Both initially rented and eventually bought by the Trust and held by the Trust so that they are perfectly safe for long term accommodation, ” said Boyle.

Boyle and Colson disclosed about the setting up of Jai Ho Trust, named after the film’s award-winning song. This Trust, they said is meant to pay for the education and basic living expenses of Ismail and Ali until they turn 18.

In February, consequent to the success of the movie, the government of Maharashtra had announced that it would allot the two child artistes, suitable apartments.

However, Rafik Qureshi, father of Rubina Ali said that till date, both the families have not heard from the concerned authorities.

“The government providing us house is a secondary thing. Firstly, it is ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team responsibility to get us houses as children have done so much hard work in the film. They are still living in slums only. It has been six months now that we haven’t got any house to live,” said Qureshi.

Boyle said he was hastening with the Jai Ho Trust to find a place for Ali before the onset of monsoon, which the meteorologists say would be around June 10.

A functionary for the Trust said the apartment for Ismail was ‘comfortable, in a good neighbourhood and near his school and cost over two million rupees.

Boyle and Colson last month also donated 500,000 pounds to a non-profit organisation to support a programme for children in a slum in central Mumbai, where the major part of the film was shot. (ANI)

Danny Boyle buys new home for homeless Azharuddin Ismail

Washington, May 28 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has come to the rescue of childstars Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali after they were left homeless following a slum clearing drive by Mumbai authorities.

Boyle has bought a new home for Ismail, who played young Salim in the Oscar winning film, and is planning to do the same for Rubina.

After the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire, the film bosses had established the Jai Ho Trust last year (08) to help fund their education.

However, the kids’ recent plight compelled Boyle and producer Christian Colson to fly to Mumbai this week to see how they could help the young stars.

At a meeting in the city’s JW Marriott hotel, Boyle announced he’s purchased a new home for Ismail and is planning to do the same to put a roof over Ali’s head too.

“The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust,” Contactmusic quoted Boyle as saying.

A spokesman for the Jai Ho Trust describes Ismail’s new apartment as “comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school”, with the property costing “upwards of two million rupees” – 42,000 dollars. (ANI)

Congress-led UPA set to form government again

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): The Congress-led UPA is set to form the government at the Centre again, as it is leading the BJP-led NDA.

A party spokesman said the alliance would get a “safe majority”.

Meanwhile, the party headquarters here wore a festive look with supporters burning crackers, dancing to drum beats as they hailed party president Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for leading the party to yet another win.

“We are bursting crackers to celebrate the victory of the UPA. It is the victory of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, entire country is very happy and celebrating,” said Jagdish Sharma, a Congress party worker.

Many of the supporters sang “Jai Ho”, the Oscar-winning number by A R Rahman in the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

A large flowered cutout of the country has also been installed outside the residence of Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath.

In a striking contrast, the BJP headquarters at 24 Akbar road wore a deserted look and was bereft of any such activity with only senior leaders like Prakash Javadekar, Balbir Punj and Najma Heptullah present at the office.

The UPA is leading in 247 seats and the NDA in 155 seats. The Third Front is leading in 76 and Others are leading in 33, till the reports last filtered in. (ANI)
