Jagan defies Congress, to go ahead with ‘yatra’

Hyderabad, June 6 (IANS) Continuing to defy the Congress party leaders, former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Sunday said he would go ahead with his ‘Odarpur yatra’.

‘Who told you that yatra would not continue?’ he shot back when reporters in Anantapur sought to know if he has called off his yatra.

The Kadapa MP was asked to comment on reports that he decided to call off his controversial tour in different parts of Andhra Pradesh following a directive from the central leadership.

By repeatedly asking the same question to reporters, Jagan has virtually made it clear that he would go ahead with his yatra in Srikakulam district from June 8.

The yatra is aimed at consoling the family members of those who either committed suicide or died of shock following the death of his father, popularly known as YSR, in a helicopter crash last year.

Jagan’s attempt to defy the high command and take out the yatra in Warangal district of Telangana region on May 28 had triggered violence. The young MP was arrested on his way to Mahabubabad town in the district but firing by gunmen of his two loyal legislators in the town injured nine pro-Telangana activists, who were opposing his tour.

After the incidents, Jagan visited New Delhi and met some Congress leaders to convince them that there is no politics in his yatra. After a meeting with general secretary incharge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, M. Veerappa Moily, he had claimed that the leadership permitted him to continue the tour.

However, Moily later denied this and advised Jagan not to defy the high command. Jagan’s loyalists among the state ministers have also advised him not to go against the party’s directive. Last week, several legislators loyal to his father called on him and urged him not to take any hasty step.

Unhappy with Jagan’s attitude, the Congress leadership is not willing to allow him to undertake the yatra even in non-Telangana areas. Srikakulam is a part of north coastal Andhra and his yatra is not facing any opposition there.

Defensive Jagan in Delhi to meet Sonia

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Under fire for violating the party leadership’s directive and going ahead with a rally in Andhra Pradesh’s volatile Telangana region, Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is here hoping to meet party president Sonia Gandhi.

The Kadapa MP, whose rally last week led to violence in the Telangana region, defended himself, saying he organised it was for his father, the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who died in a helicopter crash last year.

‘Whatever I’m doing is for my father. I’m sure the Congress president will understand my point,’ the MP, known as Jagan, told reporters here.

Jagan, who reached the capital Sunday to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, has sought an appointment with Gandhi and other senior party leaders, said party sources.

The central leadership of the party had asked him not to conduct the rally in Telangana in view of the tension prevailing there over the separate statehood issue.

Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday asked Jagan to call off his rally.

Defying the directive, Jagan embarked on the rally May 28, triggering violence between his supporters and opponents as he was taken into preventive custody while on his way to Mahbubabad in Warangal district.

Jagan reiterated that the rally was to console family members of those who committed suicide or died of shock following the death of his father, then chief minister, in a helicopter crash last year.

Jagan defensive, says rally was for father

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Monday defended his controversial rally that triggered violence in Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh and said it was for his father, the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who died in a helicopter crash last year.

‘Whatever I’m doing is for my father. I’m sure the Congress president will understand my point,’ the Kadapa MP, known as Jagan, told reporters here.

The son of the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister, who reached the national capital Sunday to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, has sought an appointment with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other senior party leaders, said party sources.

The central leadership of the party had asked him not to conduct the rally in Telangana in view of the tension prevailing there over the separate statehood issue.

Senior Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had Saturday asked Jagan to call off his rally.

Jagan abandons yatra as one dies in violence

Telangana was on the boil again after personal security officers of two Congress MLAs opened fire on pro-Telangana protesters injuring nine students, one of them seriously, at Mahbubabad railway station on Friday morning as a defiant Kadapa Congress MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy refused to call off his tour of Telangana, thereby provoking violence that now threatens to spiral out of control.

Telangana leaders have called for a bandh on Saturday and vowed to retaliate even as violence spread to Hyderabad, where several students of Osmania University took out a rally and burnt effigies of Jaganmohan and tried to damage public property.

As a damage-control exercise, Jaganmohan was detained from the train he was travelling in and released on a personal bail. Later, he cancelled his tour. But the defiant MP vowed to restart his tour of Telangana after a week. The Congress MP is against a separate Telangana state and is advocating united Andhra Pradesh, much to the chagrin of Telangana leaders including TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao, who warned him to call off his tour or face consequences.

Violence erupted at the nondescript Mahbubabad railway station when Jaganmohan, defying warnings from the Congress high command and Telangana leaders not to go ahead with the tour in a charged atmosphere, was all set to arrive there to start his six-day tour of Telangana to console the families of those who allegedly committed suicide or died of shock after hearing news of YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s death last September.

Congress MLAs from Parkal and Mahububad, Konda Surekha and M Kavita, were in the waiting room of platform number one when a large group of pro-Telangana protesters started throwing stones. Tension had been building up as scores of people opposing and supporting Jaganmohan had gathered there.

Violence rocks Telangana

Hyderabad, May 28 — Congress MP Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested on Friday afternoon after his much-hyped Odarapu yatra (consoling tour) led to violence in Telangana districts including Andhra capital, Hyderabad, in which one person was reportedly killed and twelve injured. Jagan, who is the only son of former chief minister, the late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and an aspirant for the CM’s post, was taken into custody by a large team of policemen from the coach of the Intercity Express train at Vangapalli station in Nalgonda district and brought back to Hyderabad. Later, he was released on bail. The MP who defied the party high command directive and went ahead with the trip seems to have antagonised not only politicians of all hues in Telangana but even a large section within the Congress party. Some party MLAs including former minister R. Damodar Reddy have demanded that Jagan be expelled from the party. “He clearly violated the party discipline and it appears he has decided to fight with the high command,” Damodar said. “His stubborn attitude has led to the death of one Telangana activist and large-scale violence in Warangal.” Earlier in the day, the railway station at Mahbubabad, 200 km from Hyderabad in Hyderabad-Vijayawada trunk route, where Jagan was to arrive to a planned grand welcome, witnessed battles involving Telangana activists and his supporters. Shouting slogans of “Jaya Telangana” and “Jagan go back”, they pelted stones at the followers of Jagan, who retaliated in a similar manner. Two local MLAs, Konda Surekha and M. Kavitha, who were present to receive Jagan were not spared. The guards of the two legislators escorted them out while firing at the crowd, reportedly killing a student, Praful Raju (20).

However, Moily refused to comment on the issue, only saying it will be handled as a law and order problem by the state government.

All the Taliban wanted was money: Rescued Sikh

PESHAWAR: All that the Pakistani Taliban wanted was money and that’s all they talked about, says Gurvinder Singh, one of the two Sikhs from Peshawar who were rescued after 40 days of captivity with the Pashtun-speaking terrorists. The Taliban beheaded the third abducted Sikh trader last month because their ransom demand wasn’t met.

Gurvinder’s story blows the myth the Pakistani Taliban has built around itself as a band of fighters for Islam.

“All the bandits wanted was money. They were not religious men. We did not see any one of them offering prayers even once,” he said at his home in Peshawar’s Mohallah Jagan Shah. The area near Khyber Pass, from where they were rescued, is under the influence of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan commanders Nazir Afridi, Adnan Afridi and Tariq Afridi.

While Surjeet Singh was rescued on Monday along with Gurvinder and they were reunited with their families in Peshawar, Jaspal Singh was beheaded after the families failed to raise the ransom of 30 million Pakistani rupees within the deadline. Jaspal’s decapitated body was found on February 21.

“We were shackled and chained for 40 days, given only rotis and tea and kicked and beaten black and blue,” Gurvinder told TOI. The 17-year-old described for the first time the horror that the three faced at the hands of their captors.

Belonging to the 3,000-strong Sikh community of Peshawar, mostly petty traders and business families, the three set out on January 19 to sell merchandise in some small towns nestled in the Tirah Valley near the Khyber Pass, that is the doorway to Central Asia from Pakistan. They had traversed these badlands before and Pashtun terrorists had always let them be. But not this time.

“When we reached Mathra area in Khyber tribal region, we were stopped by some 12 militants. All of them were holding AK-47 rifles. Some of them covered their faces with a long piece of cloth hanging from their turbans. They dragged out the driver from his seat, slapped him on the face and ordered him to hand over the car and leave,” Gurvinder said. “While some of the militants were grappling with the driver, two of our co-travellers found an opportunity to escape but we were bundled into the vehicle and driven away.”

Their humiliation began in the vehicle. The Taliban abductors ripped out their turbans, blindfolded them and cuffed their hands behind their backs. After more than an hour’s drive along a bumpy, rugged road, the vehicle stopped.

“Our blindfolds and handcuffs came off. There were mountains all around. They asked us to follow the three militants while the rest walked behind us with their rifles trained.” In that formation, they trekked across the mountains for five hours. “We reached two small huts where three other militants were waiting. We were told to sit on the ground. One man with scissors came to us and started cutting Jaspal’s hair short. Then came Surjeet’s turn and finally it was mine.”

He said when Jaspal started crying and wailing loudly, one of the abductors kicked him in the back, shouting at him to shut up. “However, another militant with long, curly hair brought tea and thick rotis and asked him to stop kicking Jaspal,” he said, his eyes glazing a bit. “For the next 40 days, tea and bread was our only meal.”

According to Gurvinder, as darkness set in on the first night of captivity, the militants took them into one of the huts and put metal chains with iron fetters on their feet.

That became routine. “In the morning they used to open our chains, take us out and put chains back at night.”

On the first morning, Gurvinder said, the terrorists asked for the phone numbers of their family members and elders of the Sikh community. “At noon, they started contacting our family members in front of us and it was then that we came to know that we were kidnapped for ransom. They warned our families not to disclose this episode and arrange 50 million rupees. It came down to 20 million in the next few days.”

The talks between the captors and Sikh elders on the one hand and physical torture of the captives on the other continued for weeks to come. “Always before contacting our family, they used to beat us violently so that our family would feel the pain and pay the ransom,” Gurvinder said.

After three weeks, the abductors set an ultimatum, threatening to kill one of the hostages if their demand was not met by February 19. On February 18, the militants took away Jaspal, Gurvinder said. After two days, they were told that Jaspal was dead.

“But we didn’t trust them and thought they might be using it as a pressure tactic to get money,” he said.
Gurvinder is certain he and Surjeet would have been dead by now, had not the Pakistani military operation been successful. “Our chains had not yet been opened that morning when we heard helicopters hovering and bursts of gunfire. The three militants inside our hut rushed out and we were left alone.”

He and Surjeet crawled out of the dusty hut, the latter now bleeding from bullet wounds in the stomach. They could not see anybody but the gunfire was incessant.

“Then we saw Pakistani soldiers. We put our hands up.”

The soldiers first refused to believe that the two bedraggled men were indeed the kidnapped Sikhs. “We had no turbans and our hair was cut short. Finally, they asked us to remove our shalwars to check whether we were circumcised or not. And then we were airlifted in a chopper from the area and brought to Peshawar,” he said.

Andhra Congress has no objection YSR’s son becoming chief minister: Chief Whip

Hyderabad, Sep.4 (ANI): The Congress party’s Andhra Pradesh unit reportedly has no objection to Jaganmohan Reddy, the son of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy, becoming the next chief minister of the state, the party unit’s chief whip said on Friday.

M. Bhatti Vikramarka, the Chief Whip of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, said that the unanimous view was that Jaganmohan Reddy should be the leading candidate for the post to ensure continuity of his father’s most cherished development-related programs.

The comment comes as a fierce succession race has begun notwithstanding the Congress party’s decision to put off the selection of a new leader till early next week.

Seeking to cash in on an emotional wave of sympathy, loyalists of the deceased chief minister have reportedly unleashed a strident campaign for making his son, Jaganmohan Reddy, the new chief minister.

“Jagan knew the mind of Rajasekhara Reddy. He alone can finish the unfulfilled agenda of his father,” said government chief whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka who is marshalling the MLAs in favour of Jagan.

Congress sources in Delhi have thrown up other names as possible successors. They include Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of State for Defence M. Pallam Raju, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao’s daughter and junior Union minister Purandeshwari Devi and acting chief minister M K Rosaiah.

Almost all the state ministers, about 22 MPs and several Congress legislators have pitched for Jaganmohan Reddy through the media even as hundreds of party workers gathered at the secretariat, CM’s camp office, Gandhi Bhavan and various traffic intersections are vocally making a similar demand.

The Jagan group has reportedly met Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily at the Lake View guest house to pursue their demand even as many Congress MLAs faxed individual memorandum to the party headquarters in New Delhi in support of Jaganmohan Reddy as CM.

They also called on Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari and submitted a list of 122 signatures in support of him being made the chief minister.

According to sources, there was even an attempt to pressure the governor to swear in Jagan as acting CM immediately, but that was abandoned as Rosaiah had already been sworn in by the time the loyalists reached Raj Bhavan.

Jagan, 36, is a first time MP from Kadapa and is merely 100 days old in politics. While Veerappa Moily made it clear that Rosaiah was only an interim CM and that the Congress high command will chose YSR’s successor in the next few days. (ANI)
