London, May 13 (ANI): A woman survived a 12-feet horror fall when she landed on her lover””””s Aston Martin.

Jade Bates, 22, tumbled backwards from an open bedroom window but miraculously escaped only with a leg injury.

She landed on the bonnet of his new 140,000-pound DB9 sports car – which was left with a huge dent.

“There was a huge scream and Jasvir looked outside to see Jade lying on his car. He was frantic.

“If the Aston hadn””””t had such a long bonnet, she could have been paralysed or dead. The car saved her,” The Sun quoted Jade’s friend as saying.

Jasvir, 28, rang 999 and Jade was taken to hospital by ambulance.

She was recovering at home yesterday.

Jasvir is thought to be “distressed” at the fall, having upgraded the Audi R8 weeks earlier.

“They were celebrating a friend””””s birthday.

Farmers grew rice in China’s Yangtze Basin 4,000 years ago

Washington, September 18 (ANI): New findings in the form of carbonized rice have indicated that farming in the Yangtze Basin in China existed as early as 4,000 years ago.

According to a report in Epoch Times, excavation in the Xiezi Area of Hubei Province yielded a total of 402 cultural relics, including carbonized rice.

Stone tools, pottery, bronze, jade and porcelain were unearthed, as well as a number of spinning wheels, drop spindles made of clay and other textile tools.

There were also stone mounds and smelting relics such as slag.

A variety of grains and seeds were found, and experts believe there may be carbonized wheat among the plant findings at the site.

The relics were determined to be from the Neolithic Era or New Stone Age at the time of the Shang Dynasty (ca. 1600-1050 B.C.) and Western Zhou Dynasty (ca. 1046-771 B.C.)

The combination of the relics that were found and their stratigraphic age provides valuable information about the diet structure, production methods, and living conditions of the inhabitants of the area during the time of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties.

Archeological team leader, Luo Yunbin explained that there had been speculation in the past about edible rice production in the Yangtze Basin, but the new findings provide solid physical evidence that there was agricultural development in that area during ancient times. (ANI)

Research team all set to explore sacred Maya pools of Belize

Washington, September 14 (ANI): A team of expert divers, a geochemist and an archaeologist is all set to become the first to explore the sacred pools of the southern Maya lowlands in rural Belize.

The expedition, made possible with a grant from the National Geographic Society and led by a University of Illinois archaeologist, will investigate the cultural significance and environmental history and condition of three of the 23 pools of Cara Blanca, in central Belize.

Called ‘cenotes’, these groundwater-filled sinkholes in the limestone bedrock were treated as sacred sites by the Maya, according to University of Illinois archaeologist Lisa Lucero, who will lead the expedition next spring.

“Any openings in the earth were considered portals to the underworld, into which the ancient Maya left offerings,” said Lucero. “We know from ethnographic accounts that Maya collected sacred water from these sacred places, mostly from caves,” she added.

Studies of shallow lakes and cenotes in Mexico and Guatemala have found that the Maya also left elaborate offerings in the sacred lakes and pools.

Items found on the bottom of lakes in these regions include masks, bells, jade, human remains, figurines and ceramic vessels decorated with animals, plants and the gods of fertility and death.

“Diving the sacred pools of Cara Blanca, in central Belize, is necessary to determine if they have similar sacred qualities,” Lucero said.

“Once underwater, we will first have to cut out some of the jungle wood so that we can even reach the bottom,” said Patricia Beddows, a lecturer of earth and planetary sciences at Northwestern University and an expert diver who has explored cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

“After mapping for fragile Maya artifacts, we will also take water data and manually drill sediment cores,” she added.

“The sediment samples will provide a record of changes in surface and water conditions,” Beddows said.

“Were the Maya challenged by droughts in the area? Did the water quality suddenly go bad due to sulfur or other geologic factors? We hope these cenotes will provide a rich story of linked human and environmental conditions,” she said.

One of the three pools the researchers will explore has a substantial Maya structure on its edge, likely ceremonial.

Preliminary investigations of the structure conducted by archaeologist Andrew Kinkella, of Moorpark College, turned up a lot of jars and the fragments of jars.

“This could indicate that the site was important for collecting sacred water,” Lucero said. (ANI)

Defoe recounts horrifying moment when he knew his brother had just 2 hours to live

London, Sep 3 (ANI): England’s star footballer Jermain Defoe has relived the horrifying moment when he learned that his half-brother was dying after a brutal street attack.

The Spurs striker was at the team’s training ground when his mother broke the news that Jade Defoe, 26, was in intensive care.

Speaking for the first time about April’s attack, he said: “The manager said, ‘Your mum’s in the car park’. I knew when I saw her face it was bad news. She basically said to me I think he’s got two hours to live. So I had to get myself straight to the hospital and just be there for Jade.”

Jermain, 26, was at Jade’s bedside when the urban musician also known as DJ Esco Bars died of head injuries after the beating in Leytonstone, East London, The Sun reported.

He said: “It was crazy. All his family and friends were in intensive care. It was a harrowing time and I think it changed me as a person. I was really close to Jade and his death hit the family hard.”

Jermain said he and Jade used to play football together when they were younger.

“It was difficult for us to see each other a lot because I was always travelling for my football. But we were very close as a family. It was so hard for us to accept him going at such a young age.

“When people die after a long illness it’s easier because you have time to prepare. But when it’s a phone call out of the blue it’s difficult to come to terms with,” he said. (ANI)

Goody’s grave lies lonely and forgotten as Tweed continues to party

London, August 31 (ANI): Jade Goody’s grave is said to be lying “lonely and forgotten” while her husband Jack Tweed has been snapped continuing his hard-party lifestyle.

The reality TV star’s final resting place was allegedly left untended, while the 22-year-old widower was photographed showing off his wedding band as he groped a girl pal’s breast at the recent V Festival.

“It’s not even been six months since she died but Jack is out behaving like a playboy while Jade’s grave lies untended. He was even caught groping one girl’s breast while wearing his wedding ring,” the Daily Star quoted Goody’s pal as saying.

The source added: “It’s such a shame to see Jack out living it up while Jade’s grave looks lonely and forgotten. Apart from a few items, including a plaque from her grandparents, a toy car on the cross from her two sons and some flowers, the grave looks really barren.”

Goody died at the age of 27 earlier this year, after losing her battle to cervical cancer. (ANI)

Beijing has largest number of rich people in China: Hurun Report

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): A new report has revealed that Beijing has the maximum number of rich people in China.

The latest Hurun Report on China’s wealthiest people said that there are 143,000 multimillionaires and 8,800 billionaires in Beijing.

In Shanghai, there are 116,000 multimillionaires and 7,000 billionaires, reports the China Daily.

The report also sheds light on how the super-rich in Beijing want to live their lives.

In Beijing, wealthy people need to spend at least 87 million yuan on property, cars and other luxury goods in order to be regarded as one of the city’s ‘new aristocrats’, or upper class, the report said.

They have at least three dwellings of their own, including a villa, like the 400-sq-m Ziyu Shanzhuang villa costing 24 million yuan, a luxury apartment in the downtown area for work purposes, and a Siheyuan courtyard house probably in Houhai.

The report said that most of them prefer investing in arts and they are willing to spend as much as 50,000 yuan for a year on piano classes.

In their luxury homes, they also have rare porcelain and jade ware collections interspersed with works of ancient or contemporary painters.

The rich in Beijing consider Cartier as the favourite luxury brand. They keep themselves updated on the world of finance with China Business News rather than the 21st Century Business Herald.

The bulk of their expenditures are on property, furnishings and fabrics, according to the report.

“During the past several years, the complexion of the rich in China has changed in many aspects. Many of them say they want to be a sort of upper class, rather than only being rich,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and publisher of the Hurun Report.

The report described the capital’s richest as people who wear haute couture and who carefully choose gifts for parents, spouses and children on special days.

They probably drive a 1 million yuan Mercedes Benz R500 limousine and are also members of Yongfoo Lite, the most popular club for Beijing’s wealthiest.

Their wives usually frequent the Lan Club with friends, wear Bulgari platinum and diamond watches and drive BMW sports cars.

Japan’s Osaka and Tokyo are the top travel destinations for spouses, and they attend musicals and the opera several times a year.

The report said that annual spending of the rich in Beijing is estimated at about 5.7 million yuan, mainly for new cars, collections and about 1 million yuan for donations.

The report also defined the upper class in five other cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Shenyang. (ANI)

Danielle Lloyd resorted to therapy to cope with meltdown

London, Aug 24 (ANI): English glamour model Danielle Lloyd resorted to therapy to cope with meltdown following racist row with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

While the audiences eventually forgave her housemates, Jade Goody and Danielle remained the subject of hatred.

“I’d have drunk myself to death or taken my own life,” the News of the World quoted her as telling Fabulous magazine.

“I’d hit my lowest point – I’d lost control and wondered what it would be like not to be alive. I was drinking because I had no other way of coping,” she added.

Her meltdown actually began a year ago with the discovery of an abusive web page on Facebook called ‘I hate Danielle Lloyd’, followed by a series of broken relationships.

She was subsequently referred to therapist Veronica Callanan who, she says, has helped boost her self-esteem and taught her to overcome feeling of worthlessness.

“Therapy saved my life. Without it, I don’t know what would have happened,” she said.

“My main problem was a fear that I’d never find love. Veronica showed me I was attracted to the wrong person because I didn’t value myself,” she added.

The 25-year-old beauty, who’s currently dating Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara, 22, insists that the therapist had told her to learn to love herself.

“Therapy taught me how to ‘be’ in a relationship. I used to be insecure, but I trust Jamie completely. I’m a different person now and feel I need to talk about my counselling so other people in my situation realise they can get help too,” she added. (ANI)

Skilful dentists decorated ancient Americans’ teeth 2,500yrs ago

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Skilful dentists existed as far back as 2,500 years ago who helped ancient peoples of southern North America beautify their teeth with otches, grooves, and semiprecious gems.

This finding comes from a recent analysis of thousands of teeth examined from collections in Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.

The collections belonged to people living throughout the region, called Mesoamerica, before the Spanish conquests of the 1500s.

Jose Concepcion Jimenez, an anthropologist at the institute, has revealed that the research team did not know the origin of most of the teeth in the collections.

However, Jimenez added, it was clear that people-mostly men-from nearly all walks of life opted for the look.

The researcher also revealed that the early dentists used a drill-like device with a hard stone such as obsidian, which is capable of puncturing bone.

“It’s possible some type of [herb based] anesthetic was applied prior to drilling to blunt any pain,” National Geographic News quoted Jimenez as saying.

Jimenez said that the ornamental stones-including jade-were attached with an adhesive made out of natural resins, such as plant sap, which was mixed with other chemicals and crushed bones.

He also said that the dentists likely had a sophisticated knowledge of tooth anatomy. For example, they knew how to drill into teeth without hitting the pulp inside, he added.

“They didn’t want to generate an infection or provoke the loss of a tooth or break a tooth,” Jimenez said. (ANI)

‘Jade Goody effect’ sends women rushing to UK’s NHS for cervical tests

London, May 12 (ANI): A record number of women have been rushing to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for cervical smear tests since Jade Goody lost her life to the disease on March 22.

According to Sara Hiom from Cancer Research UK, the tragic demise of the late reality star, who passed away aged 27, had sent the number of examinations soaring sky high.

“The Jade effect” had left waiting time for the tests leap from two weeks to as much as two months while the number of hits on the Cancer Research UK website’s cervical cancer pages had also jumped from 100,000 in January to almost 400,000.

“Jade’s legacy will be to help save lives. Her tragic plight brought important cervical cancer awareness messages into living rooms across the UK,” the Daily Star quoted Sara as saying.

She added: “Jade’s story has led to hundreds of thousands of people wanting information on the disease.”

The NHS Cancer Screening Programme further said it was trying to keep up with the towering demand.

A Department of Health spokesman said: “We are aware that there has been increased demand on cervical screening services due to recent media attention.

“Some laboratories are experiencing backlogs but these are being dealt with at a local level.” (ANI)
