Dour Denver defense drains Kobe-less Lakers

(Reuters) – A stifling defensive effort and 31 points from Carmelo Anthony lifted the Denver Nuggets to a 98-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

Sports

The Nuggets overcame a seven-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter by forcing three critical turnovers in the final minutes and blocking Derek Fisher’s three-point attempt as time expired.

“That felt just as good as hitting the game-winner,” Anthony said of his game-ending block.

“Tonight it was meant for me to be out there and play defense on that last play. I made the block and saved us tonight.”

Denver (52-27) won its fourth straight game to move into second place in the crowded Western conference playoff race, half a game in front of Dallas and Phoenix.

NBA champions Los Angeles (55-23) played without the resting Kobe Bryant, leaving Pau Gasol to take the lead with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Tuning up to defend their title in the playoffs, the Lakers have appeared out of sync in losing four of their last five games.

They trailed by 10 to the Nuggets at halftime and by 14 in the third before a big 20-4 run turned the game around.

The Lakers’ own 87-80 lead slipped away in the fourth, though, when three-pointers and three straight free throws gave Denver a 97-94 advantage with 44 seconds to go.

J.R. Smith bolstered the Nuggets with 26 points off the bench, bouncing back from a 4-for-13 shooting performance the previous night.

Ron Artest chipped in 22 for the Lakers, who were already without center Andrew Bynum, who is out with a foot injury.

Coach Phil Jackson said that Bryant was given the option to rest and made a late decision to sit the game out after he had struggled in his previous two outings.

“I don’t anticipate (him playing on Friday at Minnesota) but I’ll let him make that decision,” Jackson said. “He knows exactly what he needs to do to get himself ready.”

Hugh Jackman’s son embarrasses him yet again at basketball game

Washington, May 11 (ANI): Aussie actor Hugh Jackman has revealed that his son has once again managed to embarrass him during a basketball game – by rooting for the wrong team.

Jackman, 40, had been invited to take his 9-year-old son Oscar to a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, but was left red-faced after his son decided to cheer the visiting Denver Nuggets.

The actor also revealed that the young lad had previously ruined a trip to see the Los Angeles Lakers late last year when he spilled candy all over the court.

“We were courtside… and he was sort of into it. He said, ‘Dad, who’s everyone going for?’ And I said, ‘Well, we’re in New York… Everyone traditionally will go for New York.’ He goes, ‘Right, go Nuggets, go the Nuggets’,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“They scored and won the game… and we were given a whole load of swag by the Knicks to kind of shut him up… He had the (Knicks) hat in his hand and every time the Knicks scored, he’s like, ‘No, I hate Knicks (banging it on the floor)’,” he added.

Even all the free stuff the Knicks’ marketing bosses gave could not shut little Oscar up, and he was elated when at the end of the game Nuggets star J.R. Smith gifted him his shirt.

“He came over at the end and took his shirt off… and gave it to Oscar. That’s how big a fan he was,” the actor revealed.

“It came down to his ankles, like a dress (and) he wore that home… I thought we were going to get beaten up,” he added. (ANI)

Mavericks’ Terry named NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year

Los Angeles – Some egos would have been bruised, calling it an obvious demotion, but Jason Terry embraced his new role and the Dallas Mavericks shooting star was rewarded for it.

Terry was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year on Friday, after making the successful transition from starting guard to super sub.

“It’s all about the team,” Terry said. “That’s what I’ve been about since day one.”

Terry received 576 of a possible 605 points, including 111 of a possible 121 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 sportswriters.

J. R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets finished a distant second with 155 points, and Nate Robinson of the New York Knicks was third with 113 points.

A starter for most of his career, the energetic Terry came off the bench to average 19.6 points in 63 of the 74 games he played, missing the other eight due to a broken left hand.

Terry was inspired by the way former All-Star and now teammate Jerry Stackhouse made the switch to an effective bench star, providing energy and instant offence when called upon.

“When he first came to the Mavericks he could easily have been starting,” Terry explained. “But when I (saw) him step back and take the sixth man role, I said one day that might be me. And I took it to heart.”

Terry welcomed his new role when informed by Mavs coach Rick Carlisle how he planned to use the high scorer.

“Once you accept it, then it’s your job to be prepared every night and to play to your fullest abilities,” Terry said. “I think my teammates have helped me do that,” he said.

“Coming off the bench there’s no warm up shots. You don’t get a time or two up court. I think that’s the toughest part of the game – being able to jump right into the fire – that’s a special skill.”

Carlisle agreed that it takes a special player to make the change, and Terry has those qualities.

“You talk to any guy who has been a 20-point scorer in this league, and talk to them about coming off the bench and giving us a lift. Most guys will just roll their eyes,” he said.

“You have to programme it a certain way, if you’re going to be coming off the bench and be expected to make shots right away.

“The ability to do it, but also the willingness to embrace it has got to be a part of it. That’s who he is, and he wants to be a part of something that’s bigger than himself. That’s really what this is all about.”

When asked if he sees this as a possible career move, Terry smiled.

“Why not? I like it,” he said. “If that means my team is going to be up there competing for a championship, then that’s the role I will assume.” (dpa)

James hits 37, Cavs clinch league-best record and home-court edge

Los Angeles – The Cleveland Cavaliers are headed home with their heads held high. LeBron James scored 37 points, and the Cavaliers clinched the NBA’s best record along with homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs by beating the Indiana Pacers117-109 on Monday night.

“It’s one step along the way but it’s a big step” said MVP favourite James.

“To go throughout a season with the great players and the great teams that you have in this league, and to finish with the best record in the NBA is a great feat for our franchise. And we are proud of it.”

Even though the Cavs own a 66-15 mark, including an astounding 39- 1 at home with one game left on Wednesday, James doesn’t think his team should be considered favourites at this stage.

“Until you knock off the NBA Champs that’s the team to beat,” James said referring to the Boston Celtics.

The Cavaliers know what they have to do to win when they open their first-round series against the eighth-seeded Detroit Pistons this weekend.

“We worked hard to the point where we are at now, and we must serve home like we have done in the regular-season once the playoffs start,” James said.

“We have got to play at the same high level we have played this year. We know the playoffs are a different game. Mentally and physically, you have to be a little stronger, but we are healthy and ready.”

Delonte West scored 20 points, Mo Williams had 18 while Zydrunas Ilgauskas finished with 16 and 10 rebounds for Cleveland, which won’t be satisfied until it has a championship ring.

“It’s funny because we got all these accolades throughout the year, but we are still not excited,” Williams explained. “We congratulate each other, but we are not jumping around, because we want to win the NBA Championship.”

Danny Granger scored 38 points, rookie Brandon Rush scored 27 for Indiana, which cut a 15-point halftime deficit to seven late in the game before falling short.

Hotshot J. R. Smith hit a franchise-best 11 three-pointers en route to a career-high 45 points, including 23 in the final quarter, and the Nuggets (54-27) clinched the Northwest Division title along with home-court advantage in a playoffs

Chicago Bulls 91, Detroit Pistons 88 Derrick Rose scored 24, Ben Gordon had 19, including the tie-breaking layup with 15 seconds left, and the Bulls moved one-half game ahead of idle Philadelphia for sixth seed in the East playoff scramble.

Milwaukee Bucks 98, Orlando Magic 80 Richard Jefferson scored 24 points, Ramon Sessions added 19 and the host Bucks beat the Eastern Conference’s third-seed, which rested. (dpa)
