Milito helps Inter end 45-year wait for Europe’s top prize

Madrid, May 23 (DPA) A goal in each half by Argentina striker Diego Milito helped Inter Milan overcome Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final Saturday in Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium and end the Italian club’s 45-year wait for Europe’s top club title.

Coach Jose Mourinho may have dominated the build-up to this year’s final – not least because of what looks like his impending move to Real Madrid – but Milito stole the show on the pitch with two clinical finishes to help Inter become the first Italian club to register the treble of domestic league, cup and Champions League.

‘I cannot explain how I feel,’ said Milito, who also scored in all three Champions League knockout rounds as well as netting the winner in the Italian Cup final against AS Roma.

‘It’s a joy I have never experienced before. It is great for the club. It is a unique sensation. This is football. I’m very happy. I always fought. I always tried to give my maximum.’

Bayern were going for a treble themselves, but without the suspended Franck Ribery were overly reliant on Arjen Robben and were unable to break a resolute Inter defence down.

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said Ribery’s absence made a huge difference. ‘It is always easy to say after a defeat that Ribery was missing.

‘We also played without Ribery against Lyon and Juventus and half the season. I don’t think it is respectful to the other players to point out the players that are missing.

‘But in a team with this style we need a creative player and Franck is a creative player and we missed him.’

Mourinho, meanwhile, joins Ernst Happel (Feyenoord and SV Hamburg) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund and Munich) as the only coach to have won the European Cup/Champions League with two different clubs.

The Portuguese cried at the final whistle and certainly acted like he was saying farewell to Inter, but said in the press conference after the game, that he was the coach of the Seria A club and not Real. ‘I am very, very proud to be coach of Inter.

‘If I become coach of Real, would be because they are a huge club. They want to win. They are like Inter, they want to win not only at home, they also want to win in Europe.’

However, when he was asked directly when he was going to speak to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, he said Monday.

He also confirmed that there were discussions going on between clubs. ‘But I don’t know my next project yet,’ he said.

Inter president Massimo Moratti noted his coach’s emotional response to the victory.

‘I hope it was not a sense of guilt,’ he noted wryly before adding that repeating the feat of his late father Angelo, who steered Inter from 1955 to 1968 was a magical feeling.

‘It’s a beautiful thing and I hope it remains in the heart of everyone as it did 45 years ago. We won a great cup and the team deserved it very much. Tonight we have to celebrate, then we’ll see.’

Although the Nerazzuri started the stronger, Bayern displayed the resilience that has been their trademark this season and slowly began to settle with Robben nearly finding Ivica Olic at the near post after 10 minutes.

Inter had to wait until the 18th minute for their first goal threat when a Wesley Sneijder free-kick took a slight deflection but Hans-Joerg Butt pushed the ball away to safety.

Despite having the edge in terms of possession, van Gaal was left fuming in the 35th minute when his side fell behind to a simple route-one effort from Inter.

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar’s long goal-kick was steered into the path of Sneijder by Milito, who latched on to the Dutchman’s return ball before clipping the ball over the advancing Butt to make it 1-0.

Samuel Eto’o nearly made his way through the Bayern defence two minutes later but Martin Demichelis managed to clear the danger while three minutes before the break Milito set up Sneijder, but the Dutchman fired straight at the approaching Butt.

In an electric start to the second half, Thomas Mueller nearly levelled matters when found by Olic in the box, but Bayern’s best chance of the match came to nothing as the midfielder’s weak strike was easily dealt with by Julio Cesar.

A minute later, Goran Pandev’s curling effort from the edge of the area was turned away by Butt as Inter almost caught the German champions out on the break.

Hamit Altintop’s shot hit the side netting on 53 minutes as Inter began to sit back, while nine minutes later Robben whipped in a fierce free-kick from the left that broke to Mueller, but his shot was headed clear by Esteban Cambiasso.

Julio Cesar was called into action once again on 65 minutes when he managed to claw away a Robben shot that looked destined for the top corner as Inter continued to play a dangerous defensive game.

Cristian Chivu was replaced by Dejan Stankovic shortly afterwards, having struggled for long periods against Robben, but with 20 minutes remaining Milito struck the killer blow with his second goal of the game and sixth goal of this season’s Champions League campaign.

Milito beautifully controlled Eto’o's pass before ghosting past Daniel van Buyten and calmly slotting the ball past Butt to make it 2-0.

Milito was given a deserved standing ovation when replaced by Marco Materazzi in added time as Inter fans celebrated their third Champions League triumph after distant successes in 1964 and 1965.

‘I am very happy for the president. He deserves this. The club deserves it,’ said Milito.

Italian police seize Maradona’s diamond studs

Rome, Sep 19 (ANI): Beleaguered football legend Diego Maradona had to hand over his diamond studs to police as part payment for the millions he owes the Italian tax authorities.

Italian officials paid the holidaying Argentinean coach a visit at the luxury hotel he was staying in and seized the earrings worth nearly 4,000 pounds, Sky News reports.

Police claimed that Maradona still owes some 20 million pounds, dating back to his seven-year stint at the Italian club Napoli, where he frequently failed to pay income tax.

After fleeing Buenos Aires on Monday following Argentina’s four defeats in five matches of 2010 World Cup qualifier, Maradona, 48, is currently staying at a spa in the town of Merano in north-eastern Italy, where he is trying to lose weight.

Italian authorities had seized two of his Rolex watches worth 11,000 pounds in 2006, when he was staying near Naples.

In 2005, they seized the money he was to receive for taking part in a TV dancing show.

Four years earlier, he was met by 20 police officers as he got off a plane in Rome.

Italy’s Supreme Court ordered the ex-footballer to pay 36 million euros in unpaid taxes.

According to the association of Italian taxpayers, Maradona still has 22.4 million euros to pay.

Recently, Brazilian legend Pele took a blow at Maradona, saying he feels another Argentine-born player, Alfredo di Stefano, is the best player ever.

“Maradona was a great player, but he could not kick with his right foot and did not score goals with his head.

The only time he scored an important goal with his head, it turned out he had used his hand,” Pele said referring to Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in 1986 World Cup. (ANI)

AC Milan plans to sign Beckham permanently by year-end

London, Apr 29 (ANI): AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed his plans to sign ace England midfielder David Beckham on a permanent basis by the end of the year.

Beckham was meant to return to the Los Angeles Galaxy last month, but Ancelotti struck a deal with the MLS side to extend the 33-year-old’s short-term loan deal at the San Siro until the end of the Serie A campaign.

The unique ‘timeshare’ agreement will then see Beckham return to America for the rest of LA Galaxy’s season, when another stint with the Italian club has been widely speculated, the Daily Express reported.

Tottenham are also rumoured to be interested in the England midfielder following a string of strong performances for the Serie A giants, but Ancelotti remains confident he will be permanently at the San Siro by next January.

“Beckham will return to the United States and will stay there until the end of his contract, which expires in November. David has proved himself to be an exemplary professional and I honestly didn’t expect him to play at such a high level,” Ancelotti said.

“Then Milan will buy him in the winter transfer market. David has proved himself to be an exemplary professional and I honestly didn’t expect him to play at such a high level,” he added.

But despite Ancelotti making future plans for the club, reports continue to emerge that the long-standing Milan coach might not be there next season.

The 49-year-old continues to be linked to a move to Chelsea and Real Madrid – despite repeated denials that he intends to remain at the Rossoneri helm. (ANI)

Ancelotti ready to take over as Chelsea’s new coach

London, Apr 9 (ANI): AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has told Chelsea that he is ready to take over from stopgap boss Guus Hiddink.

Ancelotti has promised Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich that he is willing to join the club this summer, The Sun reported.

Ancelotti was the Blues owner’s first choice to replace Phil Scolari, but was unwilling to leave Milan mid-season.

However, sources at the Italian club have indicated that an agreement has been reached with Chelsea, which will see Ancelotti named as the new coach.

A contract worth around 5.8million pounds a season over three years has been discussed and should be signed in June.

Real Madrid has courted the 52-year-old, but Abramovich’s personal intervention is understood to have helped swing the deal in Chelsea’s favour.

The only remaining obstacle is whether Milan will demand compensation for their manager, who has one year of his contract left to run.

Ancelotti insists he has a gentleman’s agreement with Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi that he can leave with their blessing in the summer. (ANI)

Rome – Former Argentine striker Abel Balbo has quit the coaching job at struggling Serie B side Treviso after clinching a single point from four games, Italian media reported.

Balbo first walked out on the team just minutes after starting his first coaching session. The eastern-Italian club confirmed Balbo as coach the following day, but no improvement came from his management. Treviso are currently second from last in the four-team drop zone with 11 games left.

Becks must move to Milan to be able to lift FIFA World Cup like ’66′ heroes

London, Feb.18 (ANI): Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said that England midfielder David Beckham should seriously consider a move to the Italian club A C Milan if he wants to lift a FIFA World Cup like England’s 1966 World Cup heroes.

Becks, who equalled Bobby Moore’s 108-cap record in last week’s friendly with Spain, has already revealed his desire to move full-time to Serie A. He is due to return to America next month, even as Milan has sent a team to that country to negotiate a deal with the MLS club L A Galaxy.

“Beckham is desperate to play for England at the World Cup – that’s good news for me. It means he’s getting himself into a state of fitness and a mindset that he wants to win the tournament. I feel there is still something great left in Beckham – and I can definitely picture him holding the World Cup,” The Sun quoted Wright, as saying.

Wright, who is now SunSport’s leading football columnist, believes that Beckham has jeopardized his international career somewhat by playing for L.A. Galaxy.

“On his CV you’ve got Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and AC Milan. LA Galaxy? What’s that about?

“It was a bad move and I’m just pleased he’s realised now,” he added.right fears the ex-England skipper will not rank alongside the game’s greatest players without lifting the biggest prize in football.

“He’s got so much to offer still and his quality is starting to show – that’s why Milan want him to stay. Beckham has got everything. He knows it was a nightmare going to L A Galaxy. If the permanent switch to Milan doesn’t come off, he’ll look back in years to come and realize he made the biggest mistake of his life,” he said. (ANI)
