Indian captain Mahendra S Dhoni has been banned for two ODI’s for the team’s slow over-rate during the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka in Nagpur on Friday, 18th December 2009.

The nail biting 2nd ODI took 45 more minutes after the scheduled finish time due to the frequent discussions among the Indian players and the Captain during the closing stages of the match, prompting the ICC to ban Dhoni.

The decision was taken by match referee Jeff Crowe, considering the huge extra time the Indians players took to finish their 50 overs.

In the absence of Dhoni, Sehwag will lead Team India in Cuttack and Kolkata. A

The 3rd ODI will be held in Cuttack on 21st December 2009, while the fourth ODI will be held in Kolkata on 24th December 2009.

Meanwhile, the selectors have recalled Dinesh Karthik to replace MS Dhoni. Pace bowler Ishant Sharma will replace S Sreesanth, who is recovering from Swine Flu.

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Mumbai, July 6 (IANS) Former India skipper Rahul Dravid stands to make it to the one-day squad after two years as the cricket selectors Monday included him among the 30 probables for September’s Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Indian cricket team to leave for England today

Mumbai, May 29 (ANI): The Indian cricket team will leave for England on Friday for the second edition of the World T-20 Championship.

Ahead of their departure, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he had a balanced team, which could defend the World Twenty-20 title, which they won in South Africa in 2007.

“I am happy with the balance in our squad. Hopefully, we can defend out title,” he said.

Admitting that cricketers were tired after a hectic Indian Premier League (IPL), he said it helped players a lot in terms of exposure and skills.

“When you play so many matches you do get tired, after all it’s a human body. But IPL provided us with exposure and helped us to learn coping with the pressure of an international event,” he added.

The tournament will start from June 5. India will play its first match against Bangladesh on June 6.

Squad: M S Dhoni (Captain), Virender Sehwag (Vice-Captain), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, R P Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan. (ANI)

Loss of Zaheer will weaken Indian cricket team, says Ishant Sharma

New Delhi, May 28 (ANI): The loss of fast bowler Zaheer Khan could diminish India’s chances of retaining the Twenty20 World Cup.

Such was the view of his team mate and fellow pace bowler Ishant Sharma and he said this while interacting with media persons at a school which he visited here on Wednesday.

This visit to Modern School also happened to a promotional campaign for the ensuing Twenty20 World Cup tournament.

However, the 20-year-old Sharma exuded confidence by contending he can help make up for the absence of an injured Zaheer if he misses the Twenty20 World Cup cricket tournament in England, starting on June 5.

“Obviously, Zaheer Khan would have helped us. I don’t think its good news for the Indian cricket team. He is the senior most of bowlers of the side and he has helped me quite a lot and other fast bowlers in the side. It is going to be a tough time for the Indian fast bowlers,” said Sharma.

Meanwhile, Indian cricket team selectors are waiting for a favourable word from Zaheer who injured his left shoulder while playing in the second edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). He has stayed in South Africa for treatment.

The 30-year-old Zaheer Khan was in superb form alongside Sharma when they helped India win last year’s home Test series against Australia and England and also later in the series in New Zealand in April, this year.

Ishant Sharma also refused to blame captain Brendon McCullum or coach John Buchanan for the debacle of Kolkata Knight Riders in the recent IPL tourney. On the contrary, he attributed it to the team clicking as one.

“I feel it all depends upon the team which plays, be it with any captain or coach. I feel the whole team (Kolkata Knight Riders) didn’t play good cricket and that’s why we lost,” said Sharma.

Yet, the lanky Sharma seemed to be confident of leaving the nightmare behind and look ahead for the Twenty20 World Cup. He had sealed his slot in the Indian squad after he was chosen for the home Test series against Pakistan in late 2007. (ANI)

Twenty20 World Cup trophy unveiled in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 12 (ANI): Former Indian cricket captain and ICC ambassador Dilip Vengsarkar has unveiled the trophy of Twenty20 World Cup 2009 in Mumbai.

The silver trophy weighing 7-1/2 kilograms would be handed to the captain of the victorious squad on June 21 at Lord’s.

Impressed by the Indian team’s performance, Vengsarkar was hopeful that India would guard its title.

“Since this is a very good side, all the players are in good form and they are capable of giving their best performance, so they have the best chance to win again…because the World Cup which they won in South Africa…they (get) another chance to go out in England and win the World Cup, they have the potential and I am sure that they will win it,” he said.

Vengsarkar also supported the view of Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill demanding a ban on the SMS-based ball-to-ball prediction game.

“I agree with Mr. Gill as to what he said. To some extent we should not stoop so low to make money, to market that game via SMS’s because we must maintain the sanctity of cricket and it is very important for me,” he added.

Twelve teams including all test playing nations will participate in the 17-day long T20 World Cup in England starting on June 5.ndian team for the Twenty20 World Cup comprises of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Rudra Pratap Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Pragyan Ojha and Irfan Pathan. 80-feet long bat to convey best wishes for Twenty20 World Cup for Indian team

Mumbai, May 11 (ANI): Cricket fans in Mumbai sign up on a huge 80-feet long bat, sending best wishes for the Indian team ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in England beginning next month.

At 80 feet, organizers claim it’s the world’s largest bat ever made. It would need only a superhuman to hold the bat but that’s not what it’s intended to.

Put up on display in Mumbai, the huge bat was thrown open to cricket fans on Sunday to pen their best wishes for the Indian team.

“It is a very innovative way of wishing Indian cricket team. Earlier people used to wish by SMSing. It is a very innovative and useful way of wishing Indian cricket team which even they (the cricket team) won’t be able to ignore,” said Karan Singh, a fan.

“This is an eighty feet long bat which is longest in the country and I feel it would be in the whole world. This is another opportunity where we are trying to engage people with the brand and with the sport so that it comes out as a good fusion,” said Ketan Girap, a sponsor.

India won the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007 to ensure the game’s newest format gained instant popularity in cricket’s commercial hub.

India tail ensure third test v New Zealand in balance

Harbhajan Singh and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni resurrected India’s innings after tea with half centuries on the first day of the third test against New Zealand to lead them to 375 for nine at the close of play.

The last pair of Ishant Sharma (15) and Munaf Patel (14) were together for the visitors at the close.

Harbhajan scored 60 while Dhoni made 52 as the pair combined for a 79-run partnership to ensure the first day at the Basin Reserve ended in the balance after India had been reduced to 204 for six shortly into the final session.

The pair came together after Rahul Dravid, who had ground his way to 35, fell just after the tea break following New Zealand’s capture of three wickets in the hour before tea to give them the advantage as they sought to level the test series.

Dhoni and Harbhajan, however, threw caution to the wind, slashing at anything short with several shots sailing over the slips or just wide of the exasperated New Zealand fielders.

“It was crucial to contribute lower down the order and if you look at the scoreboard we have got some decent runs,” Harbhajan told reporters.

“When I went into bat it wasn’t the same and thankfully me and Dhoni and all the other guys got some runs.”

India scored 185 runs off 35 for the loss of four wickets in the final session, as Dhoni, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan (33) hit out.

“We probably let it slip 50 to 60 runs too many there,” New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin said.

“But again they got away with a few lucky shots and the ball didn’t quite go to hand. Sometimes that’s the way it can be with the tail.”

AGGRESSIVE START

Earlier, Virender Sehwag (48) and Gautam Gambhir (23) had been dismissed in quick succession before lunch after making an aggressive start, scoring 65 runs in the first hour.

Sehwag had stroked seven boundaries and a six before he nicked an O’Brien delivery through to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum with the score on 73. Gambhir fell two runs later when he was trapped in front by Franklin.

After lunch Sachin Tendulkar brought up his 53rd test half century, however, he was dismissed shortly after when he got an edge to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum off Martin for 62.

Vangipurappu Laxman, who scored a century in the second innings of the second test in Napier, was caught at second slip by Tim McIntosh for four off Tim Southee.

Part-time bowler Jesse Ryder then had Yuvraj Singh trapped in front for nine to leave the hosts struggling at 190 for five at tea.

India lead the series 1-0 after winning the first test in Hamilton by 10 wickets, while the second match in Napier ended in a draw.

Shah Rukh Khan hits back at Gavaskar for criticizing Buchanan

Mumbai, Apr 5 (ANI): Bollywood actor and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday slammed former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar for criticizing John Buchanan.

Buchanan, who is the manager of Kolkata Knight Riders, had suggested the four captain theory for the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“I have great respect for Gavaskar. I have grown up enjoying his performance. I respect him too much. I would like to say that please give the multiple-captain theory a breathing space to try now. If we fail we can always go back to the traditional way,” Khan said at a media conference here.

Gavaskar had recently criticised Buchanan’s theory saying too much importance is being accorded to the Australian, who is a failed first-class cricketer and is only trying to get lucrative jobs for his Queensland pals.

Shah Rukh also expressed hope that his team would perform much better than last year.

“All our players like Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Ishant Sharma, Mashrafe Mortaza are available,” he added. (ANI)

Kiwi pacer Franklin rues India’s getting away

Wellington, Apr.3 (ANI): New Zealand fast bowler James Franklin today rued the fact that India’s batters got away after being pinned to just over 200 runs for the loss of six wickets on the first day of the third and final test being played at the Basin Reserve here.

Franklin shared his teammates disappointment as the last remnants of India’s tail survived to bat on.

India reached stumps at 375 for nine – Ishant Sharma’s 15 and 14 by Munaf Patel the final insult as the last pair helped the tourists recover superbly from 204 for six.

The Indian lower order lashed the bulk of the 185 runs added in the final 35-over session as New Zealand’s luckless bowlers flagged.

“It’s probably balanced at the moment. We got nine wickets in the day and the game is well progressed. As long as we can get that wicket quickly tomorrow and then set about batting for a day and a half, two days then that sets the game up well for us,” the NZPA quoted Franklin, as saying.

“They got away with a few lucky shots and the ball didn’t quite go to hand. Sometime’s that’s the way it can be with the tail,” added Franklin.

Franklin, who has one for 38 from 14 overs, felt 320 would have been a fairer reflection on the way a fluctuating day panned out, but Harbhajan Singh’s streaky 60 from 78 balls and Zaheer Khan’s 33 from 23 were innings typified by riding their luck effectively.(ANI)

Guptill stays calm ahead of Kiwi-India Test series

Auckland (New Zealand), Mar.16 (ANI): The Black Caps are fighting for credibility against India, and new recruit Mark Guptill, is expecting to do his bit for the cause in a calm and steady manner during the Test series that gets underway from Wednesday, the New Zealand Press Association says in a report.

New Zealand rushed to complete a morale-boosting one-day cricket victory over India at Eden Park but a scintillating run chase still represented quality time in the middle for Martin Guptill.

Jesse Ryder may have been the man of the moment after his all round contribution – and brief shouting match with Ishant Sharma – but Guptill also drew plenty of admirers for the manner in which he contributed to an eight-wicket win that prevented a 4-0 whitewash.

Guptill makes his Test debut against India when the three-match series starts here at Seddon Park on Wednesday.

His unbeaten 57 from 50 deliveries on Saturday represented his third ODI half century in an 11-innings career that started with a sublime unbeaten 122 against the West Indies two months ago.

The 22-year-old has subsequently batted at first or second drop against Australia and India but returns to his favoured opening position this week – not that he is too fussed what position he fills.

Considered a limited overs specialist when drafted in at the expense of Jamie How for the latter stages of the West Indies series, Guptill’s poise since has demanded he combine with fellow-Aucklander Tim McIntosh and form New Zealand’s latest opening partnership.

While a sheer weight of domestic runs saw McIntosh blooded against the West Indies at the expense of Aaron Redmond in December, Guptill is the first to admit his first class production for Auckland has been far from prolific.

Guptill has fashioned a modest average of 28.67 from 19 first class matches, though his highest score of 148 was collected against Otago in December.

Guptill experienced teething problems against the world champions but finished the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy stalemate with 45 in Adelaide and 64 not out before a cliffhanger in Brisbane was washed out.

He was straight into his work against the Indians, cracking 64 at Napier in game one and eventually tallied 147 runs for the series at 49.00.

A looming test debut might be cause for anxiety but the unflappable right hander was taking another promotion in his stride – and his half century at the weekend helped sooth any nervousness.

“I’m feeling pretty confident, I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said after continuing a familiarisation process with the tourists’ attack. (ANI)

Sehwag leads the race Castrol Indian cricketer of year 2008

Mumbai, Jan 22 (ANI/Business Wire India): Virender Sehwag marked his return to form in style, capping off a wonderful 2008 with consistent scores in all forms of the game, to top the points (59 points) for the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year 2008.

The other four who made it to the top five are: Gautam Gambhir, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma.

Sehwag had a phenomenal year in Test Cricket with a triple hundred against South Africa and a double hundred against Sri Lanka, along with some blazing starts at the top of the order in one day cricket. Carrying on with his splendid form against the Australians in the Test series, Sehwag also came good in the one day series against England with a blistering 85 in the first game at Rajkot, propelling India to a massive total of 387/5 in their allotted 50 overs. He followed that up with knocks of 68 in Kanpur, 69 in Bangalore, and missed out on a scintillating century with 91 in the fifth game at Cuttack.

The Nawab’s special year ended in a fitting finale during the first India England Test in Chennai, with a blistering 83 on the fourth evening, which tilted the scales in India’s favour. His prolific run in 2008 makes Virender Shwag the front runner for the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year Award.

Gautam Gambhir, his Delhi team mate, comes in a close second with 52 points, after matching his opening partner’s good run with scores of 51,70 and 40 in the one dayers against England, along with a gritty century in seaming conditions in the second Test against England in Mohali.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni concluded one of the most successful years by an Indian captain, with four wins in five Tests. Dhoni led from the front with sterling performances at crucial moments to take the third position with 48 points.

Two young bowlers walked away with the fourth and fifth positions with pivotal spells against the visiting English team. Harbhajan Singh kept the pressure on the Englishman with some tight spells during the one dayers, and picked up crucial wickets during the Chennai Test, to capture 41 points.

Ishant Sharma enhanced his reputation as India’s new speed sensation, spearheading the attack with 6 wickets in the two Tests against England, and holds fifth position with 37 points.

As per the Awards criteria, all Indian cricketers who have played international cricket for India will now be invited to vote for their choice of the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year from amongst the top five.

The annual Castrol awards for cricketing excellence were instituted in 1997-98.

The rating system takes into account performances by Indian cricketers in Test and One Day international matches during the calendar year. The Awards have been dominated over the last decade by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and this is the first year when neither of the three legends – Sachin, Rahul and Sourav, feature amongst the top five.

In 2008, Castrol also initiated the Castrol Asian Cricketer of the Year Award which was won by Sourav Ganguly for 2007.

The Castrol Awards for Cricketing Excellence were instituted by Castrol in 1997 to recognize and honour the present, past and future of Indian Cricket. The main awards include the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year, the Castrol Junior Cricketer of the Year and the Castrol Lifetime Achievement Award.
