Out in the cold, Irfan vows to come back

It took one Australian tour in 2003-04 to make a curly-haired teenager a household name. Once he began swinging the ball both ways, comparisons with Wasim Akram followed. A few impressive knocks later, he was destined to be the next Kapil Dev. The fall for Irfan Pathan though, has been as quick as his climb was.

Having lost his swing and a considerable amount of pace, Pathan is no longer the blue-eyed boy of the selection committee. Despite scoring 397 runs at an average of 49.62 and scalping 22 wickets in the 2009-10 Ranji season, followed by a five-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy final, Pathan didn’t make the cut for the Zimbabwean tour or the India A side — touring England — as a pool of fresh faces was preferred by the selectors.

Working on errors

The disappointment is clear, but Pathan does his best to conceal it. “I really don’t know what to say. I was hopeful. Every cricketer thinks of where he is going wrong and tries to work on his errors. I’m playing well but need to do better. I’m still hoping to make a comeback,” Pathan says, while speaking to The Indian Express.

While cricket pundits attempt to deconstruct where the downfall began, Pathan isn’t sure himself. Could it have been because of the drop in pace? “But I have never been a 140-plus bowler,” he says.

“I don’t know what people are expecting from me. Do they want to see me to bowl at 140-plus and take no wickets? Or do they want to see me swing my way to wickets and give away fewer runs?” he asks, adding, “I was a bowler who could take wickets and perform whenever the team required.”

The long season has finally come to an end after the IPL, and Pathan has planned his next three months in advance.

“At the moment I’m working on my body, hitting the gym. These three months will be crucial as I will work on my pace. It all depends on how I maintain my body,” he says.

The 25-year-old has more plans in place but is reluctant to reveal them, though he is tugging at the leash to return into the senior side as it’s been a year since he was last part of the Indian team. Pathan is aware of his statistics this season, and rattles them off like a student giving his oral exams.

“It all depends on how my next season goes, I’m ready to do well again. Ready for more hard work, ready to learn everyday, ready to come back.”

Waqar says fully fit pace attack critical for Test series against England and Australia

Islamabad, May 13 (ANI): Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis believes that a fully fit pace attack would the key during the Test series against England and Australia this summer.

Waqar told PakPassion.net that once the team returns from the Caribbean after the ICC World T20 Championship, the selectors would review options for the tough English tour, adding that he would like them to pick a few extra fast bowlers in particular to cope with any injury related trouble during the Test series.

He also expressed the hope that both fast bowler Umar Gul and all rounder Yasir Aarafat would get fit on time for the ‘home’ series in England.

“We need a lot of boys to be playing, we may bring a couple extra. We’ve got a long tour this summer. We have given Umar Gul and Yasir Arafat a rest. We need all those fast bowlers for the English conditions,” Waqar said.

When asked about the chances of young fast bowler Mohammed Irfan’s inclusion in the national squad, he said Irfan has got all the ingredients of becoming a world-class pacer.

“He is totally unorthodox, he”s tall, he’s got potential”. “I thought he might be good for the World T20 competition but unfortunately he couldn”t get into the side. I believe in the very near future he could get into the side,” Waqar said.

No evidence to prove Younis Khan’s Oz ‘misconduct’ charges: Counsel

Dubai, May 5 (ANI): Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan’s lawyer has said there was no evidence against his client which could prove that his behaviour was not upto the mark during the Australian tour following which he was banned for an indefinite period by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Mohammed Ahmed Qayyum said he has gone through the PCB’s inquiry committee’s report, which had recommended a ban on both Khan and Mohammed Yousuf, and could find nothing against his client.

“I have seen the documents personally at the PCB headquarters and I found no evidence at all against my client,” Qayyum said.

“Younis Khan was not a part of the team on the New Zealand tour and was only a member of the one-day side on the Australia tour,” he added.

Qayyum said he would urge the PCB for an open enquiry in Khan’s case, and let the people of the country to see the truth.

“Yes, we shall certainly press for the open hearings and let the world know about his innocence,” The Nation quoted Qayyum, as saying.

The second round of hearing, which is being presided over by a former high court judge, Irfan Qadir, is scheduled to take place on Saturday (May 8). (ANI)

Pakistan’s Younus wants ban evidence made public

Former Pakistan captain Younus Khan has told an appeals judge he wants the country’s cricket board to make public the evidence that led to them to impose an indefinite ban on him last month.

“Younus not only wants an early resolution to his appeal against the ban but also asked the appeals judge, Irfan Qadir, to direct the PCB to make public all evidence on the basis of which they banned him,” his lawyer Ahmed Qayyum told Reuters on Friday.

“Younus is adamant that he is innocent and he told the appeals judge he had played diligently and with 100 percent commitment for Pakistan all his life and he didn’t deserve the ban,” Qayyum said.

“Younus also asked the judge to hold his hearing on camera so that everyone knows on what grounds the board has banned him,” he added.

Irfan Qadir, nominated by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s governing council to hear the appeals of six cricketers who were either banned or fined for indiscipline and misconduct on the tour of Australia, held his first hearing on Friday.

The PCB banned Younus and Muhammad Yousuf indefinitely and imposed 12-month suspensions and fines of two million rupees each on Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved. Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi and brothers Kamran and Umar Akmal were fined three million rupees each.

Yousuf retired from international cricket last month in protest at the ban.

The next hearing of Younus’s appeal is scheduled for May 8 and the appeals of Malik and Rana take place on May 22.

Younis wants PCB to hasten decision on appeal against indefinite ban

Lahore, Apr.27 (ANI): Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan wants the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to decide on his appeal against the indefinite ban imposed on him by the board as soon as possible.

Younis’ counsel Ahmed Qayyum said the PCB is yet to take any action on his appeal and that it should resolve the issue quickly.

“My client wants his ban to be revoked and decision should be taken as soon as possible on it. So, far we have not received any official notification from the PCB regarding appointment of Justice (retired) Irfan Qadir to hear the appeal,” The Daily Times quoted Qayyum, as saying.

Meanwhile, Younis is hoping that he would be recalled for Pakistan’s tour of England, adding that he was keeping himself fit to respond to the PCB’s call.

“I have not heard anything about the hearing from the PCB yet. I am still waiting and whenever they will call, I will go. I am practicing as I always have done. I am not one of those who will sit around when not playing,” he said. (ANI)

Yet another PCB ‘confusion conundrum’ over replacements for injured Gul, Arafat

Lahore, Apr.20 (ANI): There seems to be a complete lack of communication between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the team management as far as announcing replacements for injured bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat is concerned.

While the team management, including captain Shahid Afridi and coach Waqar Younis had said that fast bowler Mohammed Sami and rookie pacer Mohammed Irfan would be replacing the injured players in the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Championship, the PCB has come out with a clarification on Irfan’s selection.

On Sunday, chief selector Mohsin Khan had said that the PCB chief Ijaz Butt has confirmed both Sami and Irfan’s name for the West Indies bound team.

However, minutes after Khan’s remarks, the PCB released a press statement saying Butt is still to give his nod to replacements.

“Sami and spinner (Abdul) Rehman will replace Umar and Yasir and both the names have been approved by the PCB chairman,” a PCB statement clarified later.

Rehman, 30, has played two Tests, 11 one-day internationals and two Twenty20s for Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the 6”10 tall Irfan is dejected at the news of him not being selected for the national team.

He was not named in the list of 30-probables Pakistan had sent to the International Cricket Council (ICC), so he can not be selected in the final 15.

The left-arm fast bowler attracted attention following his stupendous performance in the domestic circuit, where he took 43 wickets in 10 first-class matches in his debut season.

Irfan, however, is hopeful of making to the big league very soon, The Daily Times reports.

“Of course I’m dejected at being dropped but I’m not defeated. Hopefully God has something better in store for me in the future,” he said. (ANI)

Inclusion in Pak T20 World Cup squad totally unexpected: Mohammad Irfan

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Rookie fast bowler Mohammad Irfan, who has been called up to play for Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies, has said that the call up was totally unexpected.

Irfan has been included in the 15-man Pakistani squad to replace injured fast bowler Umar Gul, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

“I was in a state of shock. I couldn”t believe what I was watching. Of course I had been hoping for this to happen, but never did I dream that it would happen as quickly and as dramatically as this,” Pakpassion.net quoted Irfan, as saying.

“I was preparing myself for a possible call up to play during the games coming up in England later this year, but this is totally unexpected,” he added.

Irfan further said he was officially told of his selection and congratulated by everyone, including skipper Shahid Afridi and coach Waqar Younis.

“Afridi said mubarak lambu you have made it into the team, and Wicky bhai said shabash (well done). This is the reward for all your hard work and perseverance,” Irfan said.

“I’m going to be fitted for my official Pakistan kit tomorrow, then I”m to report to the National Cricket Academy on the April 23 to join the team before we fly out on the April 24,” he added. (ANI)

Pak to use rookie fast bowler Irfan as ‘surprise weapon’: Afridi

Karachi, Apr 19(ANI): Pakistani skipper Shahid Afridi is looking forward to ‘unleashing’ rookie fast bowler Mohammad Irfan as a ‘surprise weapon’ in the Twenty20 World Cup to held in the Caribbean, starting April 30.

Afridi believes that the 6ft. 8inch Irfan has the potential to shine on the international stage.

“I’ve faced him. He is really good. We can actually use him as a surprise package against our rival teams in the Twenty20 World Cup. He is pretty fast, but it’s his height that can really trouble a lot of batsmen,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“He extracts good bounce. We are hoping that he overcomes the few hurdles which are still there and is with us in the West Indies,” he added.

The 30-year-old also spoke highly of fast bowler Mohammad Sami, who is set to make his Twenty20 Internationals debut.

“Sami is looking good. He has shown his strength and commitment in the camp and is bubbling with energy. I’m expecting him to do well in the World Cup,” Afridi said.

Irfan and Sami have replaced injured fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat, who have been ruled out of the tournament due to injuries.

Afridi also voiced the uncertainty looming over their inclusion in the touring party.

“Their selection in the team is still subject to approval from the PCB chairman. We don’t know whether we will get permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take part in the Twenty20 World Cup because we have selected him from out of the 30-man preliminary squad,” he said. (ANI)

Pak suffer double blow as Gul, Arafat ruled out of Twenty20 World Cup

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Defending Twenty20 World Cup champions Pakistan have suffered a major blow, as fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat have been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies due to injuries.

Gul, Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the previous two editions of the Twenty20 World Cup, hurt his shoulder during a training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore earlier this month, while Arafat is struggling with a calf injury.

Both players failed to clear their final fitness tests conducted at the Gaddafi Stadium here.

“In mutual agreement with captain and coach, we have decided that we will not take a chance with half-fit players,” The Daily Times quoted Mohsin Hasan Khan, Pakistan selector, as saying.

“We have recommended the names of fast bowlers Mohammad Sami and uncapped Mohammad Irfan as replacements for the injured players. We have picked Sami from the list of five reserves we had kept for the World Cup,” he added.

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi admitted that the absence of Gul is a major blow, but stressed that the team will manage with the players they have.

“Umar is our best bowler, but we have to cope with it and now Sami has to replace him and perform,” he said. (ANI)

No compromise on discipline, fitness, performance: Pak selector

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Pakistan’s cricket chief selector, Mohsin Khan, has said no compromise would be entertained on discipline, fitness and performance for the Twenty World Cup to be held in the West Indies from April 30.

Khan emphasised it was a major factor why the selection committee decided to replace injured fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat with fast bowler Moahammad Sami and uncapped paceman Mohammad Irfan.

“In mutual agreement with captain and coach, we have decided that we will not take a chance with half-fit players,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

“Umar Gul would be missed in the Twenty20 World Cup and this is disappointing that he is not the part of the team,” he added.

Gul, the leading wicket taker in T20 internationals, is sidelined by a shoulder injury, while Arafat has failed to overcome a calf problem.

Pakistan sets cut-off for cricketers’ appeal

Pakistan cricket authorities said seven players banned or fined for indiscipline during a disastrous tour of Australia have 30 days to appeal.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) last week banned former captains Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan indefinitely, while suspending another former captain, Shoaib Malik, and fast bowler Rana Naved-ul Hasan for one year.

It handed heavy fines to wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, his brother Umar and Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi.

A six-member committee headed by PCB chief operating officer Wasim Bari was set up to investigate Pakistan’s dismal performance on the December-February tour, where Pakistan lost all three Tests, five one-day and a Twenty20 match.

Bari said: “We have sent all the seven players letters in which we have mentioned the reasons for their punishments and the players can now appeal under the PCB constitution.

“They can file appeals within 30 days.

“We held a thorough inquiry and took into consideration all the facts and background and made decisions to solve the problems in Pakistan cricket,” said Bari, who is also a former captain.

PCB legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi said three judges have been named to hear the appeals.

“The PCB governing board has appointed two retired Supreme court judges – Muneer Sheikh and Jamshed Ali Shah – and a former high court judge, Irfan Qadir, who will deal with appeals,” Rizvi said.

None of the players has spoken publicly about their punishment or indicated they will appeal.

Afridi is a strong contender to lead Pakistan in the next month’s World Twenty20 in the West Indies, while the Akmals were included in the 18-man squad announced last week.

Pakistan, due to defend the Twenty20 title it won in England last year, is due to announce a captain next week.

Pak SC asks accountability bureau to ‘stop playing hide and seek’ over Zardari’s immunity

Islamabad, Mar.13 (ANI): Reprimanding the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) over its dilly-dallying attitude, the Pakistan Supreme Court has asked the bureau to “stop playing hide and seek” over the immunity status granted to President Asif Ali Zardari and seek the custody of the documents relating to the 60 million dollar money laundering case which the government had withdrawn from Swiss courts.

“For how long will this hide and seek continue,” asked Justice Javed Iqbal while hearing a fraud case.

Noting that it is the apex court only which has the authority to interpret the Constitution, Iqbal directed the bureau to submit an application explaining whether any one enjoyed immunity under the Constitution.

“Neither the NRO judgment is person-specific nor the court is interested in personalities,” The Dawn quoted Iqbal, as saying.

NAB’s acting chairman Irfan Nadeem told the court that the bureau had written a letter to the law ministry seeking instructions for reviving the corruption cases since the President enjoyed immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution.

“The ministry in turn referred the matter to the Attorney General’s office and its reply was still awaited,” he added. (ANI)

Suspected Jakarta bombing ‘mastermind’ was trained in Pak

Jakarta, Sep.9 (ANI): In yet another case which determines that terror is Pakistan’s principle export, it has been revealed that the prime suspect of the July 2009 Jakarta hotel attacks received military training in Pakistan.

Indonesia’s national police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri disclosed that Mohamad Jibril, who allegedly provided funds for the terror group responsible for the bombings, received training in Pakistan during 1999-2000.

“Jibril received military training from several Jemaah Islamiyah activists for about a year, from 1999- 2000,” Bambang told the House of Representatives.

“The training was conducted in Pakistan while he was studying there,” he added.

Mohamad Jibril alias Mohamad Rizky Ardhan alias Muhammad Jibriel Abdul Rahman was arrested two weeks ago.

He is believed to have played a key role in raising funds for the terrorist group led by Noordin Top, who belongs to Malaysia.

The Indonesian police suspect that the money was coming from Middle Easte countries such as Saudi Arabia and Yemen, however, it is yet to arrive on any conclusion.

Officials said they are still working to find more solid evidence against Jibril, who was nabbed after his cell phone number was found in Ali Muhammad bin Abdullah’s mobile phone.

Ali is a Saudi Arabian who was arrested a few days before Jibril, the jihadwatch.org reports.

It has also been revealed that Jibril’s uncle, Irfan S Awwas, was the chairman of a radical Islamic organization , Indonesia Mujahidin Council (MMI). (ANI)

Mumbai, Aug 26 (ANI): A case has been registered against two shop owners after a portion of a four-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, Yunus Kasam Memon and Irfan Yusuf Memon, who own a shop of mobile handset covers, had allegedly added a staircase without seeking permission from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Honour killings remain unchecked in Lahore

Lahore, July 6 (ANI): Honour killing seems to go on unchecked in Lahore as it claimed three lives in two incidents last week. It seems that it has become part and parcel of lives of Pakistanis.

On July 2, a newly married couple was killed in the name of ‘honour’ in the Barki police precincts. Ramazan shot dead Khalid and his wife Shamim, who had eloped and married without the consent of their families.

Ramazan was Shamim’s cousin and both had been engaged. The other incident took place on July 5, when a boy, Irfan, killed his uncle Shahadat Ali for marrying his mother after the death of his father in Kahna police precincts. Reportedly, Irfan considered the marriage a matter of ‘honour’.

In 10 weeks, nine people were killed in the name of ‘honour’ in the city. Among these incidents, on June 18, in Sabzazar police precincts, Iqbal killed his sister Adeeba (22) for having an alleged affair with a boy, the Daily Times reported.

The accused tried to hide the incident by shifting the body to some other city, but the police recovered the body after chasing the accused. On June 2, Nawaz of Ferozewala killed his sister Shehnaz Bibi, who was a mother of two, for having an affair with a man.

On May 26, Ahsan Elahi gunned down his wife Shazia in Liaquatabad police precincts. On April 20, Zulfiqar Khokhar of Green Town killed his sister Shahnaz (35) and niece Farah (18) for honour.

In Kahna, on April 16, a woman was killed by her in-laws in the name of ‘honour’. (ANI)
