Pak Parliament committee summons players, PCB officials over match fixing scandal

Islamabad, May 21 (ANI): The latest match fixing scandal surrounding some Pakistani cricketers has now attracted the attention of the country’s political leadership as well, with the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Sports summoning Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt , former team officials and captain Younis Khan for a meeting on May 25.

Committee chairman Iqbal Mohammed Ali said Butt, along with the PCB’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Wasim Bari, team manager Yawar Saeed and former chief selector Iqbal Qasim have been asked to appear before the parliamentary committee to discuss the match-fixing issue.

While expressing strong reservations over the inquiry commission, which was set up by the PCB to probe the reasons behind Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia, Ali said the way the board has handled certain issues in the recent past was also questionable.

“We will even propose a committee of retired judges to investigate how does the PCB work. It (PCB inquiry committee) was not a neutral committee and that’s the main reason that now we will propose a committee of retired judges,” The News quoted Ali, as saying.

“After the leakage of this video, I am very confident that President (Asif Ali Zardar, who is PCB’s chief patron) will also take a serious notice and streamline the affairs of PCB,” he said while referring to the leaked video tape of one of the hearings of the inquiry commission, which showed former team officials and players pointing fingers towards other players for their alleged role in match fixing.

Earlier, T20 skipper Shahid Afridi called for a quick and ‘decisive’ action by the concerned authorities in the match fixing controversy.

Afridi said the controversy is damaging for players keeping in view that they have to compete in some important tournaments in the coming months, including the 2011 World Cup.

“The thing is that there is too much uncertainty because of all those allegations regarding match-fixing. It’s really damaging for the players and the team and I’m really concerned because it comes at a time when we are looking forward to a very busy calendar filled with major assignments, including the all-important World Cup,” he said. PML-N leaders sniff ‘third force’ conspiracy

Islamabad, Apr 26(ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders have expressed their fears about some conspiracy or ‘something extra-constitutional’ being hatched by certain elements belonging to the Army and intelligence agencies.

Raising concerns about the conspiracy, PML-N spokesman and senior leader Ahsan Iqbal has said that a third force wants a clash between the judiciary and parliament.

Iqbal did not name the third force precisely in the same fashion, as Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has repeatedly done in recent months, The News reports.

According to another PML-N leader, the Army is trying to pitch the judiciary against parliament and for this purpose it is using certain elements in the media.

The leader, however, did not have anything concrete to support his argument.

After the recent bloody riots in Abbottabad and Hazara, another PML-N leader had voiced his doubts that some intelligence agencies had played tricks to trigger violence in the area. (ANI)

Sindh High Court quashes petition challenging Zardari’s electoral eligibility

Karachi, Apr.22 (ANI): The Sindh High Court has quashed a petition challenging President Asif Ali Zardari’s eligibility, saying he enjoys constitutional amnesty from court proceedings.

Chief Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani observed that the 2008 Presidential election could not be challenged, and that Zardari could only be removed from the chair through impeachment.

The petition filed by advocate Maulvi Iqbal Haider asked for scrutiny of Zardari’s nomination papers by the election commission saying that he too was a beneficiary of the defunct National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

The petitioner also argued that following the Supreme Court’s judgement on the NRO, all those cases dismissed under the controversial amnesty law were restored.

It may be noted that in December last year, a 17-member judge bench, headed by Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, had declared the NRO as “unconstitutional” and “invalid from the outset”. (ANI)

‘Pak can’t blame India for terror while allowing rabid groups like JuD to flourish’

Islamabad, Mar.20 (ANI): It has almost become a ritual in Pakistan to blame a ‘foreign power’ (read India) for any terror strike in the country, and this ‘ritual’ is being religiously followed by the Pakistani leadership each time extremists strike killing scores of people.

However, leaders in Pakistan seem to have forgotten the fact there are numerous banned religious and non-religious organisations flourishing in the country under political patronage and wreaking havoc all over the nation.

Organisations like the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), which claims to be a humanitarian group but is actually the front face of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), are busy working towards achieving their nefarious aims without any check in Pakistan under the parental guidance of some of the political parties wearing the label of religion.

Former Pakistan minister for law, justice, parliamentary affairs and human rights and attorney general Iqbal Haider, in his article in The News, pointed out that Islamabad must refrain from laying the blame on India when the country itself is fathering several extremist groups.

“ Some of the political parties wearing the label of religion or not, must not lend any moral or material support, covertly or overtly, to the Taliban for minor gains or victories in elections,” Iqbal said.

“ Why should we blame India, when we have within Pakistan such well-wishers, protectors and supporters of extremist militant banned obscurantist religious organizations such as the various segments of Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and several other militant Lashkars who are enough to destroy our peace and progress,” he added.

Iqbal stressed that Pakistani leaders must rise against the nefarious aims and objectives of the Taliban and their terrorism which is threatening not only the integrity of Pakistan, but also peace and prosperity in the South Asian region.

“Instead of pursuing a blame game with our neighbours which will only help the Taliban in spreading their influence, we must adopt the policy of cooperation and collaboration not only within Pakistan, but also with our neighbors particularly India, Afghanistan, Iran and China,” he further added. Musharraf’s trial for treason ‘writing on the wall’: PML-N

Islamabad, Sep.18 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has said that former President General Pervez Musharraf’s trial under the high treason act is inevitable and warned the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government against putting the demand of the former general on the backburner.

Talking to media persons on the issue, PML-N’s central information secretary Ahsan Iqbal said : “Musharraf’s trial is the writing on the wall,” and added that the government should just initiate action the former general and leave the rest to the court of law.

Iqbal said all those who are trying to protect Musharraf would be considered ‘equal partners in crime’, and if the government continues its delaying tactics on the issue then people would take the matter into their hands as they did in the case of deposed judges.

“No one is authorized to pardon a person involved in heinous crimes,” The Dawn quoted Iqbal, as saying.

He also asked the government to clarify its stand regarding the US claims that it has given three billion dollars to Pakistan as aid since President Asif Ali Zardari took charge. (ANI)

David Beckham, Cheryl Cole best role models for Brit kids

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Soccer idol David Beckham and singer Cheryl Cole are the best role models for children, say parents in a new UK survey.

The study conducted by The Children’s Society showed that almost two-thirds of adults believe school-age children do not have anyone to look up to today.

Nearly 55 per cent of the adults questioned said that Becks sets best example for children, compared to 18 pct who thought the contrary.

The second spot went to singer Cheryl Cole, with 40 per cent rating her positively, compared to 27 per cent who saw her as a bad role model after her conviction in 2003 nightclub assault case.

However, popular cartoon character Homer Simpson was voted the worst role model.

When it comes to the world of politics David Cameron is seen the best role model. A fifth saw Gordon Brown as a positive role model, while 16 per cent said the same about Nick Clegg.

Of the 2000 adults surveyed one in seven said children today looked up to their fathers.

About 32 per cent said they used to consider their mother a role model, and 30 per cent believe that children today also look up to their mothers for inspiration.

Just five per cent of adults said they think children look up to their grandparents.

“This poll reflects our concerns that many children are living without positive role models,” the Telegraph quoted Rashid Iqbal, director of The Children’s Society’s National Mentoring Initiative, as saying.

“If children are not looking up to adults this is not the children’s fault.

“Both parents and society at large have a responsibility to enact a change of heart in our society and actually live by the values that they espouse and be strong and positive role models, providing continuity and support to a child or young person’s life.

“At the moment this seems more aspiration than reality. Adults have a collective responsibility to make childhood better for all children,” Iqbal added. (ANI)

PML-N urges Supreme Court to hear petition against Musharraf afresh

Islamabad, Sep 10(ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) has asked the Supreme Court to hear afresh the petition against Gen Pervez Musharraf for violating the court’s order in sending party leader Nawaz Sharif to Saudi Arabia in 2007.

An SC bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had overturned a ban on the Sharif brothers to contest elections and hold public offices, but Sharif was sent back to Saudi Arabia when he returned to Pakistan on September 10, 2007.

PML-N spokesman Ahsan Iqbal said in a statement that Musharraf had violated the Supreme Court’s verdict, the Constitution and fundamental rights by sending Mr Sharif back to Saudi Arabia, Dawn reports.

Iqbal also said that if PML-N were provided a fair opportunity to contest the elections, and had Sharif been allowed to stay in Pakistan, his party would have emerged as the single largest party in the 2008 general elections. (ANI)

PML-N blames PPP for ‘not being interested’ in Musharraf’s trial

Islamabad, Sep. 9 (ANI): PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal has said that the PPP backed out of its promise on trying former President Pervez Musharraf.

The Dawn quoted Iqbal as saying that the PPP had agreed to prosecute Musharraf in the past but now it seemed that the PPP is not interested bringing the former dictator to book.

Rejecting claims that the PML-N was taking a soft stance on the issue, Iqbal said PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif on Monday renewed his demand for Musharraf’s trial under Article-6 of the Constitution.

Responding to a question on Saudi Arabia’s role in Musharraf’s prosecution, Iqbal said: “It is better not to involve Saudi Arabia in this issue.” (ANI)

Nawaz Sharif may face trial for ex-army official’s murder

Islamabad, Sep.9 (ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif may be tried for murder charges, as the Supreme Court is set to hear a petition accusing the PML-N chief for murdering a former Army officer.

According to sources, the apex court would hear the accusations against the former premier and would then decide whether to pursue the case further or not.

The petition accuses Sharif of plotting an ex-military officer’s murder after a purported political kickback deal failed, The Nation reports.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N),however, has rejected the petition, saying the party chief is being wrongly framed in the case.

“This is a false and totally politically-motivated accusation,” PML-N spokesperson Ahsan Iqbal said.

Iqbal said the accusations are a part of the ‘smear campaign’ being initiated against Sharif by the Presidency.

“This is only the latest in a series of recent accusations against Sharif. The presidency and hidden hands are trying to pressurise him into backing down on his demand for prosecuting Musharraf,” Iqbal told BBC.

However, the main petitioner in the case, Shahid Orakzai, said the court ruling justified the long struggle against Sharif.

“It has taken 12 years for the truth to prevail,” said Orakzai.

Orakzai’s brother Major Shabbir Orakzai, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Kohat in 1997. (ANI)

Imran encourages Shoaib not to waste last few years of international cricket

Lahore, Sep 7 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has advised bad boy of Pakistan cricket Shoaib Akhtar not to waste his last few years of international cricket and try to work hard to get back into the team and then go out with honour and pride.

Shoaib went to attend a fund-raising campaign for Imran’s Shaukat Khanum Research Cancer Hospital, but declined to speak on cricket issues with the media.

The fast bowler, who has had a bad last few months and was not considered for the Sri Lanka tour or the Champions Trophy, also appeared fitter having shed considerable weight.

“Imran basically told him that if he gets back into the team and does well, everyone would forget his past and only remember the present. Imran told Shoaib he needs to work hard on his fitness,” the Daily Times quoted a source, as saying.

Chief selector Iqbal Qasim has also made it clear that if Shoaib wants to make a comeback to the Pakistan team, he needs to change his attitude and be more positive.

“Shoaib can still play for Pakistan, provided he works hard on his fitness. But I think he also needs to work on improving his relations with the board,” Qasim said.

The PCB is willing to give the fast bowler another chance as it has completely played down the issue of a show cause notice issued to Shoaib in July for appearing on a television talk show without seeking a clearance.

Shoaib is said to have apologised for his mistake, which pleased the board.

“If Shoaib can improve his attitude, behaviour and be more disciplined and focused he is still an asset for the Pakistan team,” a former Test player at the function said. (ANI)

PML-N withdraws 48-hour ‘stop-Sharif-slur’ ultimatum to PPP prematurely

Islamabad, Sep.3 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) has withdrawn its 48-hour deadline to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which had asked the latter to stop the character assassination campaign being run against the PML-N leadership.

The Daily Times quoted PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid, saying that his party has withdrawn its ultimatum after ‘achieving the objectives’.

Earlier, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal gave a 48-hour ‘ultimatum’ to PPP asking it to halt the character assassination drive against the top PML-N leadership, which was being run through a ‘cell’ in the presidency, in association with the MQM.

However, sources said Iqbal’s statement has annoyed senior party leaders including former foreign minister Sartaj Aziz.

They disapproved the use of word ‘ultimatum’ by Iqbal, though they had no objection to the allegations leveled by him against the Presidency.

Meanwhile, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said that Saudi government should not be involved in Pakistan’s political affairs.

Addressing a press conference at Chief Minister’s Secretariat here, Sharif asked the Saudi authorities to not to meddle in Pakistan’s internal matters. (ANI)

Top PML-N leaders disapprove Iqbal’s 48-hour ‘ultimatum’ to PPP

Lahore, Sep. 2 (ANI): PML-N’s inner circle has reportedly rejected party information secretary Ahsan Iqbal’s 48-hour ‘ultimatum’ given to the PPP, saying that such moves would create a political deadlock in the country.

On Monday, Iqbal had issued a warning to the PPP asking it to halt the character assassination drive against the top PML-N leadership, which was being run through a ‘cell’ in the presidency, in association with the MQM.

“The evidence of PPP’s involvement in the smear drive will be exposed at a proper time,” a much toned down Ahsan Iqbl told the media after reportedly facing flak from senior party leaders on Tuesday.

The Dawn quoted sources as saying that some PML-N leaders, including former foreign minister Sartaj Aziz, disapproved the use of word ‘ultimatum’ by Iqbal, though they had no objection to the allegations levelled by him against the Presidency.

According to him, Iqbal’s assertion had given the negative impression that the PML-N wanted to initiate the confrontational politics of the past.

Nawaz Sharif told the participants that they should “effectively expose financial irregularities of the government while tolerating its undemocratic attitude with patience.”

Sharif reportedly admitted that the character assassination drive has the backing of the presidency and ‘this has hurt him.’

The former prime minister said the party should not give hype to the matters to such an extent where it could benefit ‘undemocratic forces’.

“We’ll never become a part of any conspiracy to wrap up the system,” the source quoted him, as saying.

He, however, warned that if the government did not take notice of the situation, it would lead to a situation the PML-N wanted to avert. (ANI)

PML-N media committee to counter Sharif ‘smear campaign’ in ‘tit-for-tat manner’

Lahore, Sep.2 (ANI): A four-member media team has been constituted by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif to counter the ‘smear campaign’ against the party leadership initiated by some anti-PML-N groups.

Addressing a party meeting at his Raiwind residence, Sharif asked the members of the committee to counter the allegations being levelled against the party leadership in a ‘tit-for-tat manner’.

The committee includes party leaders like Ahsan Iqbal, Saad Rafiq, Khawaja Asif and Pervez Rashid.

Meanwhile, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said the party would soon give evidence of involvement of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the character assassination campaign being carried out against the PML-N chief.

Iqbal said PML-N wants to work with the PPP cordially, but it can not tolerate such a ‘smear campaign’ against its party chief.

“The PML-N believes in positive politics and welcomes PPP’s stance on reconciliation. However, if the campaign against the PML-N was not stopped immediately, the PML-N would have to defend itself,” The Daily Times quoted Iqbal, as saying.

Meanwhile, Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar has said that government is not worried by the formation of such ‘media committee’.

“The Pakistan People’s Party-led government is least bothered whether the PML-N forms a four-member or a 40-member media team to counter the alleged “propaganda campaign” against its leadership,” Babar said.

Talking to a private television channel, Babar rejected reports of a media cell being run in the Presidency to malign the image of PML-N leadership.

He asked the PML-N to produce evidence in support of its claims, and said PPP would respond in a democratic manner in this regard.

“If the PML-N has any difference with the PPP, it could be resolved through dialogue,” Babar added. (ANI)

Battle lines drawn as PML-N issues 48 hrs ultimatum to PPP to stop vilifying Sharif

Lahore, Sep 1 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has issued a 48 hours ultimatum to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to halt a “malicious” campaign against party chief Nawaz Sharif or be prepared for a forceful response.

“The PML-N is restraining itself for the sake of democracy, or it could have exposed hundreds of corruption stories involving PPP leaders,” PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal told reporters.

He said all information pointed towards the Presidency being responsible for the disinformation, the Daily Times reported.

He claimed the campaign was launched to divert the public’s attention from rental power projects, the Pakistan Steel Mills issue, the sugar scandal and former president Pervez Musharaf’s trial.

Iqbal said the PML-N would not allow anyone to distract it from its stated agenda on these issues.

He said a recent Gallup Polls survey had shown that 71 percent of Pakistanis wanted Musharraf tried for sedition and there was no need for a resolution.

Replying to a question on whether the renewed conflict between the PML-N and the PPP could jeopardise the system, Iqbal said his party would continue to fight for the constitution and democracy.

Meanwhile, in a tit-for-tat reply to PML-N’s warning that they would respond against the PPP leadership if it did not mend its ways within 48 hours, the PPP leaders said they were not afraid of any ultimatum.

The president’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, rejected and condemned the attempts to accuse the Presidency of being involved in what has been described as “character assassination” of some political leaders.

“There is no question of the Presidency being behind the resurrection of old accusations against some political leaders,” he said.

He said the accusation relating to the distribution of slush funds among politicians some two decades ago were not new and kept popping up every now and then. (ANI)

Was Nawaz Sharif against conducting nuclear tests in 1998?

Lahore, Aug.30 (ANI): Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan has said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was not in favour of conducting nuclear tests in 1998, but was ‘outlawed’ by his cabinet and forced to accept its decision regarding going ahead with the tests.

In an interview with a private television channel, Khan claimed that some ministers of Sharif’s cabinet also supported his views of not conducting the nuclear tests at that time.

He said that ministers like Mushahid Hussain, Nisar Ali Khan, Sartaj Aziz and Abida Hussain, during a cabinet meeting, had opposed the nuke tests which were held on May 28, 1998.

“Mushahid changed his mind and did not support the nuclear tests of May 28, 1998 during a cabinet meeting held to consider the issue,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

Khan said the present opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan would confirm his claims, as he is fully aware of the incident.

However, both Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) have rejected Khan’s claims.

PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain termed former Foreign Minister’s statements as a ‘joke, saying both he and Mushahid Hussain, as the Information Minister, had supported the nuclear tests.

PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal also denied Khan’s claims that Nawaz Sharif was opposed to conducting nuclear tests.

“Gohar’s statement regarding the PML-N chief’s stance on nuclear tests was contrary to fact. The statement has no relevance, as every one knew that Nawaz, the Prime Minister at the time, had decided to conduct the nuclear tests in 1998,” Iqbal said.

Meanwhile, former Federal Minister Abida Hussain said she had suggested the government to not to conduct nuclear tests in a huff merely to give a response to India.

Hussain said it was the then Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan who had pressurized Nawaz Sharif for conducting the tests immediately. (ANI)

Centre withdraws security cover given to twenty-four VIPs

New Delhi, Aug 29 (ANI): As part of its comprehensive review and rationalisation of the VIP security system, the Union Home Ministry has withdrawn X-category security over of over twenty-four individuals,

The Ministry also decided to reduce the number of personal security officers (PSOs) from three to two to be deployed for X category security.

After the review former Chief Justice of India Y. K. Sabharwal, former MP and Bollywood Star Govinda, former MP Anwar Hussain, UP politician D.P.Yadav, Shoaib Iqbal MLA from Matia Mahal in Delhi, and two Delhi-based journalists and some local leaders from different northeastern states will lose security cover from next month.

Home Ministry sources, the ministry is planning similar reviewing of the Y and Z-category list in due course so that more police personnel are available for actual policing in Delhi.

The ministry will soon write to states to discharge central paramilitary force (CPMFs) personnel who were diverted for VIP security, sources added.

The ministry has also raised concern over the state governments lacking to provide security cover to central protectees, according to their categorisation during their tours in the respective states.

As per the VIP security guidelines, no central protectee can retain his/her Delhi-based PSO beyond 72 hours while on an outstation trip. The PSO is thereafter required to report back to Delhi, leaving the onus of protecting the VIP on the state police.

Meanwhile the Home ministry is also planning to reduce the security cover given to former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, National Commission of Scheduled Castes Chairperson Buta Singh, former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh and Lok Jana Shakti Party Chief Ram Vilas Paswan and others.(ANI)
