Central Bangkok explosion wounds 4 people-officials

July 25 (Reuters) – An explosion wounded four people in central Bangkok on Sunday, emergency officials said, but it was unclear what caused the blast and if it was related to a closely watched special election in the Thai capital.

The explosion occurred near a busy intersection at the heart of Bangkok’s commercial district, the same area occupied by thousands of “red shirt” anti-government protesters for several weeks until an army crackdown on May 19.

“We were told by the police that there are four wounded from the incident,” said a spokesman for the Erawan Emergency Centre, adding the blast took place opposition Central World, a shopping area that was set on fire by protesters in May.

It coincided with a Bangkok by-election that is being seen as a referendum on Thailand’s recent political unrest. (Reporting by Ploy Ten Kate; Writing by Jason Szep; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Two poachers arrested near Corbett sanctuary with leopard skin

Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand), May 16 (ANI): The police arrested two persons near Corbett sanctuary in Uttarakhand”s Udham Singh Nagar District for possessing leopard skin.

Police said the duo was coming from Champawat district and going to Uttar Pradesh”s Moradabad district to sell it off.

“When we were checking some suspected vehicles at the intersection, our informers told us that two people were standing with leopard skin and are waiting for a bus to Moradabad,” said Arvind Choudhary, a police officer.

“We arrested both of them at the Ambedkar Park. We have seized skin of two leopards from them,” he added.

“One skin is around three months old and it has been peeled off very nicely and has been well preserved. So, it seems that this has been done by a skilled worker,” added Prakash Arya, Sub-Divisional Officer, Ramnagar forest.

Besides Corbett National Park, leopards are found in Rajasthan”s Ranthambore National Park and Sariska Tiger Reserve. (ANI)

Thailand’s Red Shirt leaders soften demands in quest of compromise

Bangkok, Apr 24(ANI): Leaders of Thailand’s opposition United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), also known as the “Red Shirts”, have softened their stance and proposed a new deadline to the government.

UDD leader Veera Musikhapong said the Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s Government must dissolve the House in 30 days, and new elections be held 60 days after that. This should give the government 90 days to prepare.

Their previous stance was that the government must dissolve the House in 15 days.

The compromise offer came after the Red Shirt leaders allowed a group of foreign diplomats to observe their rally base at Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok on Friday.

Musikhapong further said the UDD leaders had reached a consensus on a new time frame out of concerns for the safety of the public.

“We are open to negotiation. We want to save lives and are ready to make sacrifices and negotiate,” The Bangkok Post quoted Musikhapong, as saying.

“This is a compromise time frame and the government should find it acceptable,” he added.

He also stressed that the UDD wanted the government to set up a committee to investigate the April 10 and April 22 attacks. (ANI)

Man dies after truck crash

A 61 year old truck driver has died after his rig crashed into a tree in the South West.

Police say the truck hit a utility at the intersection of Harris Road and Martin Pelusey Road near Bunbury before careering into a tree just before 06:00 this morning.

A 30 year old woman, who was driving the utility, has been taken to hospital with leg and head injuries.

Sergeant Gerard Murphy says it appears the truck driver was at fault.

“At this stage it appears early on in the investigation that the truck driver has contravened the stop sign but we’ll be looking at the cause of the crash throughout the investigation.

“The indication at the scene is that he’s continued on for another 100 metres through a paddock and then hit a large tree.”

Woman arrested for ‘sleeping’ while driving

A woman has been arrested after police found her asleep at the wheel of her car at an intersection in Alice Springs this morning.

Police found the 30-year-old woman asleep in her sedan at the intersection of Tietkins Avenue and the Stuart Highway just before 7am.

Police said the car’s engine was running and the lights were on.

The woman was arrested and was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.226 per cent.

She was charged with high-range drink-driving and unlicensed driving.

She has been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on May 13.

Crash truckie to serve 6 months

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to three years prison for killing a woman in a horrific traffic accident in Darwin’s rural area.

In June last year, Geoffrey Ross Hamilton was the driver of a three-carriage roadtrain.

He ran a red light at an intersection in Coolalinga and ploughed into a car, instantly killing 20-year-old dental nurse Karlee McCullough.

A short time later, Dale Stanton, who was directing traffic around the crash site was fatally hit by another car.

In sentencing, Justice Trevor Olsson said a lapse in concentration and faulty judgement had led to the crash.

Hamilton was sentenced to three years jail, suspended after he serves six months

He has also had his driver’s licence disqualified for a year.

Buggy crash charge, woman in ‘induced coma’

Northern Territory Police have charged a 46-year-old man with a number of offences for crashing a dune buggy at Lambells Lagoon early Monday morning.

The man and a 30-year-old woman were seriously injured in the crash when the dune buggy rolled near the intersection of Miniata Road and Billabong Road just before 1am on Monday.

Both are still in Royal Darwin Hospital hospital and prison officers are guarding the man.

The woman is in an induced coma.

The man has been charged with recklessly endangering life, driving with a disqualified license, driving an unregistered vehicle and causing serious harm.

He is due to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Friday.

10yo pinned under truck

A 10-year-old boy who was pinned under a truck in Townsville yesterday is in a stable condition in hospital.

Brendan Harding was crossing the intersection of Acheron Avenue and Ross River Road just before 8:00am (AEST) when he was hit by the truck.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Residents want green light for road safety fix

Mount Hutton residents say it is crucial traffic lights are installed on the suburb’s main road before someone is killed or seriously injured.

Residents have begun lobbying Lake Macquarie Council for traffic lights at the intersection of Dunkley Parade and Tennent Road.

Councillors last night agreed to inspect the site and a report on the issue is expected to go before council at the end of next month.

The suburb’s road safety committee spokesman, Jason Brown, says school children use the pedestrian crossing everyday.

“Lives are at risk because the traffic doesn’t seem to want to slow up because they’re in a rush to get to work, but also not being courteous enough,” he said.

“That’s why traffic lights would be fair for everybody … slow the traffic down, stop the traffic when it needs to and also let the traffic come in from the two suburbs.

Fire threatens homes

Authorities are warning residents of a fire threatening homes in Coolup in the state’s South-West.

The bushfire is moving fast in a south-easterly direction towards the Darling Scarp in the Shire of Murray.

The fire started near Murray Street and the South-West Highway in Coolup.

Waterbombing helicopters are helping ground crews fight the blaze.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area around Murray Street and the South West Highway – where the intersection has been closed.

Elsewhere, a fire in Perth’s south-eastern suburbs has been contained.

The blaze broke out at the Armadale rubbish tip in Darling Downs.

Rezoning application raises conservation fears

A Darwin resident has raised concerns about the rezoning of Aboriginal land in her neighbourhood from conservation to light industrial.

The Gwalwa Dariniki Association has made an application to rezone a 2.5-hectare plot adjacent to the intersection of Dick Ward Drive and Totem Road in Coconut Grove.

The resident, Brigid Oulsnam, says the application does not give enough detail about the conservation value of the land.

She says it does not even mention the fauna in the area.

“Particularly in relation to the conservation values, they’ve been dismissed in barely a paragraph where there are about 30-40 pages devoted to a traffic study,” she said.

“I think that’s particularly disappointing and I think without a proper environmental assessment no further consideration should be given to it.”

Ms Oulson says the Gwalwa Dariniki Association needs to clarify what kind of light industrial business will use the land.

“I don’t think it’s a particularly inspired or inspiring proposal especially given that there’s no detail for any future development,” she said.

The company Planit Consulting is managing the application for the Gwalwa Dariniki Association.

The company’s spokesman Adam Smith says businesses are interested in using the land but nothing has been locked in.

“It’s a little bit premature, I believe, to nominate specific uses given that we’ve sought a rezoning for light industrial purposes,” Mr Smith said.

“The light industrial zoning actually allows for a variety of uses and certainly what we would envisage … are those uses that are consistent with that zoning.”

Soon, ‘robobees’ that mimic bees’ behaviour

Washington, Sep 13 (ANI): A Northeastern University neurobiologist is collaborating with Harvard University researchers to develop micro flying robots that will emulate the bees’ brain, body and collective behaviour.

Biology professor Joseph Ayers would create robots, called the robobees, which would mimic the communal feeding behaviour of bee colonies.

The project will draw on the knowledge of computer scientists, engineers, and biologists to construct an electronic nervous system, a supervisory architecture and a high-energy source to power the innovative robots.

“This project will integrate the efforts and expertise of a diverse team of investigators to create a system that far transcends the sum of its parts. We expect substantial advances in basic science at the intersection of these seemingly disparate disciplines to result from this effort,” said Ayers.

Inspired by the biology of the bee and the insect’s colonial behaviour, the project aims to advance miniature robotics and the design of compact high-energy power sources.

The project would also spur innovations in ultra-low-power computing and electronic “smart” sensors that mediate biomimetic control.

In addition, it would refine coordination algorithms to manage multiple, independent machines.

Ayers is widely known for his work in biomimetics- the science of adapting the control systems found in nature to inform design of engineered systems to solve real-world problems-including the development of RoboLobster and RoboLamprey.

The autonomous, biomimetic underwater robotic models emulate the operations of the animals’ nervous systems using an electronic controller based on nonlinear, moving models of neurons and synapses.

“Animals have evolved to occupy every environmental niche where we would hope to operate robots, save outer space. They provide proven solutions to problems that confound even the most sophisticated robots, and our challenge is to capture these performance advantages in engineered devices,” said Ayers. (ANI)

‘Vampire Diaries’ stars arrested for disorderly conduct in Georgia

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): Four young stars, including actress Nina Dobrev, from the cast of CW Network’s new show ‘The Vampire Diaries’, were arrested for flashing motorists from a bridge in Georgia last month.

Oz motorist fined after being caught ‘in the act’ with girlfriend

Melbourne, May 23 (ANI): An Aussie man has been slapped with a fine of 1400 dollars after police stopped his swerving car on the road, only to find him having sex with his girlfriend while driving.

Bradley Dean Milne, 33, and his girlfriend claimed that they couldn’t resist their temptation and started making out in the car before they reached their destination.

Milne was charged with not wearing his seatbelt, driving without due care, and drink-driving when a witness called the police after seeing his car swerving all over the road.

Judges at Darwin Magistrates Court heard that the couple were planning to drive to East Arm Wharf in the Mazda ute to have sex.

And Police prosecutor Leigh Cahill said tjat Milne “became aroused” and the woman gave him oral sex while he was driving, until they reached the traffic lights at the Berrimah Rd intersection.

Milne was swerving from one side of the road to the other until police stopped the car, and found a blood alcohol concentration of .097 per cent in his body.

“Come on, mate. What would you do? We were going to the wharf but we didn’t quite get there,” the Northern Territory News quoted Milne as saying at that time.

His lawyer Ian Rowbottam said that he was too embarrassed to speak about the incident again.

Rowbottam also said that Milne not been paying attention to his intoxication, and had been surprised at the reading.

“He wasn’t concentrating on that – he was concentrating on his amorous situation,” he said.

Magistrate Hugh Bradley said that he would not focus on things that were not unlawful, but warned that Milne needed to be more careful when driving.

“If these things are going to happen, you need to stop driving,” he said.

Milne was fined with 1400 dollars and was disqualified from driving for six months. (ANI)

Anand Margis seeks judicial probe into killing of their monks in 1982

Kolkata, May 1 (ANI): Around 500 people belonging to Anand Marg, an occult sect, participated in a silent procession here on Thursday.

They were demanding a judicial inquiry into the killing of 17 monks and a nun allegedly by the Communist Party of India (Marxists) goons in 1982.

The procession was organised by the Ananda Marga Pracharaka Sangha (AMPS), to pay homage to the 17 monks and a nun who were killed on April 30, 1982 in Kolkata.

“We want judicial enquiry into this particular incident. This particular incident still remains in secrecy. Nobody knows what happened, who has killed. Nobody has been given punishment. We want that the culprit should be given punishment,” said Acharya Kalyenvaranada Avadhuta, public relation secretary, AMPS.

As a protest against what they term to be the CPI-M’s tyranny that claimed the lives of the 17 monks and a nun, the Anand Margis have been holding this silent rally every year on April 30.

Claiming to be a spiritual movement, Anand Marg founded by P R Sarkar in 1960, is viewed as a cult since certain rituals practised by its followers are unusual and these include the use of skulls and allied occult traditions.

Anand Marg had been banned by the Supreme Court after there was a hue and cry by the public over its followers practising rituals with human bones, daggers and even snakes in the open.

This organisation was accused of killing of Central Railway Minister L N Mishra at Samastipur in Bihar in 1975. In the same year, a couple of Anand Margis were also arrested for hurling a bomb at the Chief Justice of India, A N Ray at a traffic intersection, near the Supreme Court. (ANI)

Thai protesters hurl petrol bombs at troops

Thai prime minister’s vehicle attacked

Bangkok, April 7 (Xinhua) The Thai prime minister’s vehicle was trapped among angry protesters Tuesday afternoon in Pattaya before he finally escaped, Thai media reported.

According to the Nation’s website, the attack happened at 1.15 p.m. when Abhisit Vejjajiva’s official car and a security vehicle were caught in a traffic jam at an intersection in Pattaya, after they had just escaped anti-government protesters at the Cliff Beach Hotel, the venue for cabinet meeting.

Two people on a motorcycle, who were from the rally at the hotel, recognised Abhisit’s car and alerted others, the report said.

The security officials then moved Abhisit to another vehicle so as to escape the protesters. But the protesters quickly increased to about 50 and surrounded both cars, pelting the vehicles with water bottles and hitting with feet clappers, the report said.

According to the website, when security officials were escorting Abhisit to the other vehicle, a woman waded through the police and stuck her head inside the vehicle to shout at the prime minister.

After an about-three-minute tussle, the prime minister’s car managed to escape the siege but some protesters ran after it and broke the rear window before it finally got away.

Earlier in the day, about 400 people gathered in front of the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel, where Abhisit and other cabinet members were holding a meeting, yelling their demand for resignation of the prime minister and foreign minister, as well as a new general election.
