Defence-A Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Abid Rasheed had alleged that he had seen the marriage certificate that showed that the wedding was solemnised on September 2, 2007.

Tight security for ULFA’s 12-hr bandh on Thursday in Assam

Guwahati, June 24 (ANI): Security has been tightened in Assam following the 12-hour ‘Asom Bandh’ called by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Thursday.

Guwahati has been put on high alert, while security has been beefed up in sensitive places like railway stations, railway tracks, bus stands, airports, parking lots, refineries and other vital installations.

“Alert has been sounded across the state in view of the bandh tomorrow. Security has been tightened and special arrangements have also been made to ensure law and order during the bandh hours,” said Inspector-General of Police (CWR) GP Singh.

The banned ULFA has called a 12-hour ‘Asom Bandh’ on Thursday beginning from 5 am to protest the killing of two of its cadres in an alleged fake encounter on Sunday, besides killing members of other militant outfits in the past few months by security forces.

The outfit has, however, exempted students appearing in different examinations, water and milk supply, hospitals and medical facilities, electric supply and the press from the purview of the bandh.

Moreover, the state government has also issued directives to all deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers to make sure normal operation of offices during the bandh.

A strict vigil was being maintained at the Kamakhya Temple, where a four-day Ambubachi Fair is being markedd by thousands of people. (ANI)

Dry fish traders in Manipur protest militants’ demands

Imphal, May 26 (ANI): Dry fish traders in Manipur have been hit badly by the militants’ illogical extortion demands.

Militant outfits like Naga National Council (NNC), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP (MC)) have demanded rupees 800,000 as annual tax from dry fish traders.

Perturbed with such a strange demand, in a news conference at the Manipur Press Club here the traders informed media persons about the issue and appealed to the militants to withdraw their demands.

“There is no assurance whether the vehicles transporting dry fish will reach us or not. We are really concerned about their safety. Once, the vehicle leaves, we are not able to concentrate on any other work. We fear that they might be captured and we will get threatening calls to pay up. If we don’t make the payments the they burn down the vehicles and incidents are increasing,” said O. Indrajit Singh, Dry fish Trader in Imphal.

“Such demands would lead to a price hike and it will actually affect the public,” said O. Indramani Singh, another dry fish Trader, Imphal.

Dry fish traders, as a mark of protest, closed down their shops and suspended distribution of fish to the retailers to draw everyone’s attention towards extortion demands.

The market will remain closed till an amicable solution is reached with the militant groups.

The traders informed that the extortion demands by militants will force the them to hike the price of the most sought after food of the Manipuris, the fermented fish. This, in turn, would cause great hardship to the people.

“Militants should review their demands. Because of their actions people are angry and complaining against their activities. The prices are really going high. This is because of their activities. Individually, we cannot do anyting. But if all of us get together. We can fight such them,” said W. Deven Singh, a consumer.

The State police commandos have taken up combing operations at the Paona Bazaar area to prevent violenceby militants.

“The combing operation in the market area has been quite successful. In the recent past. We have been able to arrest those who had come to deliver demand letters and those carrying weapons in the market area,” said H. Devendra Singh, a police inspector in Imphal West.

Moreover, a protest demonstration was also taken out by the dry fish traders to express their anger against militants, as they have disrupted normal life in the state and affected its economy. (ANI)

Farmers advised to use ear protection while feeding ‘squealing’ pigs

London, May 26 (ANI): Farmers have been advised to use ear protection when feeding pigs, to protect them from ‘deafening’ squeals.

The noise made by pigs during mealtimes can reach more than 100 decibels, louder than a chainsaw or powerdrill, the Health and Safety Executive has warned.

It has produced a leaflet entitled Farmwise – An Essential Guide to Health and Safety in Farming, recommending farmers to wear earmuffs or stay away from pigs while they are eating, reports the Telegraph.

The leaflet said: “Large numbers of pigs in a building can create noise levels of 100 decibels or above, especially at feeding time,” according to the leaflet.

The leaflet also suggested that even short-term exposure could be harmful, particularly if workers are exposed to other sources of noise during the day.

“Use mechanical or automated feeding systems to reduce the need to enter the building when it is noisiest, e.g. at feeding time. Make sure any work requiring entry is done during quieter periods,” the leaflet added.

HSE inspector Tony Mitchell said that the noise in pig farms only becomes a problem where hundreds of pigs are kept in close confinement in giant sheds.

“If you can imagine a shed with three to 400 hungry sows waiting for you to come and feed them and they are all squealing at the same time, the noise they make can be quite dramatic,” he said.

“But it’s not an issue if you have an automated feeding system you can switch on from the outside. Once the pigs are feeding they are quiet.

“If you are feeding pigs with a barrow of feed with a scoop for each pig you could be exposed to that noise for quite some time,” he added. (ANI)

75 percent of terrified cops go ‘missing’ in ‘death zone’ Buner

Peshawar, May 26 (ANI): With the Taliban establishing its writ in the Swat Valley, a large number of police personnel deployed in the region have reportedly run away.

It has been revealed that almost 75 percent of police personnel deployed in Buner District are missing, while over 40 percent of them have not reported on duty in Swat due to the Taliban’s expanding writ in the region.

Over 30 per cent of the total Malakand police force has either quit or the cops are not reporting to their police stations for the past several months, The News reports.

“Almost 310 cops out of the total 400 policemen have reportedly deserted the force in Buner while 820 have quit jobs in Swat. The Swat police comprise of around 2000 policemen,” sources said.

Not only the local cops, but security personnel from the Elite Police Force (EPF) are also evading repeated duty orders.

Only 100 cops of the Elite Police Force (EPF) and four platoons, comprising around 136 individuals, of the Frontier Constabulary, are reporting for duty, sources added.

It may be noted that the EPF had refused to be deployed in Swat to improve the law and order situation, saying they would prefer quitting their jobs rather than being posted in the ‘death zone’.

The inspector general of police (IGP) had directed the cops several times to report to their respective police stations, but all attempts have failed to sway the police officials.

Once considered a plum posting, Swat is now being avoided by the cops. They are using all their contacts to pressurize higher police authorities for transferring them out of the hilly town.

“Twelve officers have been posted as DPO Swat during the past 21 months, out of which three cops even refused to assume the charge. The rest served for some weeks before getting a better posting in other parts of the province and country,” sources added. (ANI)

Chinese computer technician gets over 8 months in jail for Chen sex scandal

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): A Chinese computer technician involved in the stealing of sexually explicit photos of Canto pop star Edison Chen Koon-hei has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half months in jail.

The Kowloon City Magistrate Court found Dicky Sze Ho-chun, 24, guilty of dishonestly obtaining access to the intimate photos showing Chen in sex acts with female celebrities, including Gillian Chung, Cecilia Cheung and Bobo Chan.

But his defence counsel has declared that he would file an appeal, reports the China Daily.

Sze has been accused of stealing the pictures while Chen’s computer was being repaired at Elite Multimedia Limited, where he was an employee, and he is said to have shown the photos to two female staff at a household store.

He also burnt a compact disc containing 1,300 sex images for one of them.

Pleading for leniency before Chief Magistrate Tong Man, defence counsel Kevin Tang said that Sze was only 21 when he committed the crime and was ignorant of the law.

“The defendant had no malicious intention in showing the nude images to others. He was an innocent boy willing to share his experience with people who asked him to do so. He regrets what he did,” said Tang, adding Sze accepts responsibility for the incident.

However, Magistrate Tong ruled out suspending the sentence owing to the seriousness of the crime.

“Though the defendant realized no monetary gain, he gravely invaded the privacy of others and breached the trust of his employer,” he said.

Although there was no evidence to prove Sze was responsible for touching off the high-profile scandal by distributing the photos on the Internet, he did expose private information of others in an extremely dangerous situation, he added.

The magistrate refused to grant bail pending appeal, and ordered that Sze be jailed immediately.

Chief Inspector of Police Kenny Wong Tak-cheung said that the judgment served as a warning to the public that it is a serious offence to use a computer dishonestly.

“Hong Kong Police is determined and capable of combating technological crimes,” he added. (ANI)
