BCCI puts Team India sponsorship up for grabs

With its deal with Sahara coming to an end next month, the BCCI on Monday invited bids from companies through a tender notice for sponsoring four Indian squads, including the much sought-after men’s outfit.

The tender notice, issued by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, called for firms to bid for sponsorship of the men’s, women’s, India A and India under 19 teams, indicating the documents would be available from May 24 for a non-refundable payment of Rs 5 lakh.

It said all bidders need to fulfill the eligibility criteria set up by the Board as well as other requirements as mentioned in the bid document.

Submission of the bids also has to be done as per conditions outlined, the Board also reserved its rights “to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage and to reject any and/or all bids without providing any reasons, including calling for a re-tender.”

BCCI’s deal with existing sponsors Sahara is set to come to a close next month.

Sahara, which has supported the Indian team for several years as its main sponsor, recently bid successfully for the new Pune IPL franchise for a staggering Rs 1700 crore.

Sahara will review its sponsorship to the Indian cricket team, Group chief Subroto Roy had said after winning the IPL franchise bid on March 23.

Sahara had bagged the sponsorship for the Indian cricket team for Rs 400 crore for a four-year period ending December 2009, and had agreed to continue for six more months as BCCI could not find any sponsors.

“No, it will not. Only thing we will see is our continuation of sponsorship to the Indian cricket team. We will sit on that and we will discuss on that. But on all other sports nothing will be affected,” Roy had said on the impact of the Group’s aggressive bidding to acquire the IPL’s Pune franchise.

Asserting that the Group, which is also sponsoring the Indian hockey team, would seriously consider (limiting) exposure to the BCCI and the women’s cricket, he said then that the Group “will take a conscious decision about it.”

Team India manager admits verbal pub spat, Nehra denies

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) The Indian cricket team’s tour manager Ranjib Biswal and speedster Ashish Nehra Saturday presented contradictory versions of reports that the players were involved in a pub brawl in St Lucia after the team’s disappointing exit from the World Twenty20.

Biswal said the players had a minor ‘argument’ after being harassed by some fans in the pub.

‘It was nothing big. It was just a verbal talk. The boys had gone there for dinner and were harassed by Indian fans and there was some argument over that,’ said Biswal.

Nehra, on the other hand, denied any such incident.

‘I came to know about it only while reading the newspapers in London. I was surprised to see where this news came from. It is baseless.’

‘We went to have dinner there and were watching the West Indies and Australia match. About the rest, I have no knowledge,’ he said.

‘No one said anything to us. There were many fans from all over the world.’

On team’s performance, Nehra said: ‘We are all disappointed. We had a good team and we could have done better. But it’s a part of the game. The same team won World Cup two years ago.’

‘Kirsten’s unfit’ Indian cricket team returns home

Mumbai, May 14 (ANI): The Indian cricket team, seven of whose members were declared “unfit” by coach Garry Kirsten, returned from its disastrous World Twenty20 campaign on Friday.

The team landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here after a 28-hour flight.

India, which had won the inaugural World T20 tournament in 2007, failed to win three of its Super Eight matches in this year”s tournament.

The performance has led to many questions being asked of skipper M S Dhoni and his teammates.

On Thursday, Kirsten, reportedly slammed his players for their poor fitness levels and lack of commitment.

He pointed out that even he was fitter than some of the players and gave the players a month’s time to shape up.

Kirsten also said the team was content to be number one in Tests and number two in ODIs, but had not shown enough commitment to scale the summit at the World T20.

Kirsten who has been coach of Team India since March 2008, would submit a report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the T20 World Cup performance. (ANI)

Widened IPL probe takes tax officials to Sahara offices

New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) Amid search operations at the Sahara group offices in Lucknow Thursday, tax officials probing the financial dealings of the Kolkata franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL) claimed ‘incriminating evidence’ of irregularities.

Sleuths of the tax administration also questioned once again IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi over alleged irregularities in awarding the broadcasting rights and media rights for the cricketing extravaganza, officials said.

The search at premises of the Sahara group, the franchise for Pune that has its main office in Lucknow, came a day after similar operations across eight cities, covering the IPL, most of its franchises and three event-management and broadcast firms.

Led by industrialist Subroto Roy, the Sahara group — also the official sponsor of the Indian cricket team – had won the franchise for Pune at the latest auction for $370 million.

‘While we purchased the franchisee for the Pune team for Rs.1,702 crore, our operations will actually begin only with IPL Season-IV in 2011,’ Sahara group spokesperson Abhijit Sarkar told reporters in the Uttar Pradesh capital.

‘It is wrong to describe the operation as a raid — this is a survey.’

In Kolkata, the probe by the sleuths of the Directorate of Income Tax Investigation was on the legality of money transfers from tax havens like Mauritius to buy the franchise and the players through auctions.

‘We’ve found incriminating evidence,’ Indian Revenue Service Deputy Director Akhilendu Jadhav said in Kolkata, after the search operations at the offices of the Bengal Cricket Association and Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders.

‘We needed to have a look at certain transactions and we have found whatever we were looking for,’ Jadhav told reporters in the West Bengal capital in the early hours of Friday.

In Mumbai, meanwhile, Modi was questioned for the second time in two days over various issues, including the process involved in awarding the television broadcasting rights and the media contracts to parties.

The 45-minute enquiry was done a day after a team of 50 officials swooped on the offices of Multi Screen Media, World Sports Group and Pat Magnarella Management in Bandra, Khar and Malad suburbs of northwest Mumbai.

Earlier called Sony Entertainment TV, Multi Screen Media has the telecast rights for the IPL T20 cricketing extravaganza for 10 years from 2008 while World Sports Group acquired the global media rights for 10 years for over $1.5 billion.

Pat Magnarella Management is a full-service management, branding and marketing services company, which in the past specialised in the music business and later made a foray into sports as well, officials said.

At the broader level, the probes follow the selective leak by Modi of the names of the Kochi franchise’s owners, resulting in the resignation of Shashi Tharoor as minister of state for external affairs as his friend was given sweat equity in it.

The 10 franchises under scrutiny are Kochi’s Rendezvous Sports, Pune’s Sahara group, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

Thursday also saw the president of the country’s apex cricket board categorically stating that the meeting of the IPL’s governing council will go ahead April 26 as scheduled in spite of questions raised by Modi.

‘Under the board constitution, the secretary is the convenor of all meetings. Even today I don’t convene a meeting, being the board president,’ Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar said at the headquarters of the board here.

The meeting was convened by BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan in the wake of charges of financial irregularities by IPL and its franchises and a breach of confidentiality by Modi’s selective leaks.

The IPL commissioner then had questioned the legality of the scheduled meeting Wednesday and said only he had the powers to convene it. His camp said there was conflict of interest as Srinivasan-led India Cements owned the Chennai franchise.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers | 7 Brides for 7 Brothers | Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Cast | Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Musical Film | Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Stanley Donen | Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Albert Hackett

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a musical film released in 1954. It was directed by Stanley Donen, with music by Saul Chaplin and Gene de Paul, and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The script by Albert Hackett, Frances Goodrich, and Dorothy Kingsley is based on the short story The Sobbin’ Women, by Stephen Vincent Benét, which was based in turn on the Ancient Roman legend of The Rape of the Sabine Women. The film was a 1954 Oscar nominee for Best Picture.

The film is particularly known for the unusual choreography by Michael Kidd, which makes dance numbers out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and most famously raising a barn.

In his introduction to a showing of the film on TCM January 17, 2009, Robert Osborne says MGM was much less interested in the film than it was in Brigadoon which was also in production at the time, even cutting its budget and transferring the money to the Lerner and Lowe vehicle.

On the 2004 DVD commentary, Stanley Donen states that the film was originally shot in two versions, one widescreen and another in normal ratio, because MGM was concerned that not all theaters had the capability to screen it. Despite the fact that it cost more than the widescreen version to make, he says, the other version was never used. However both versions are available on the 2004 DVD release.(Wiki)

Indian cricket team leaves for South Africa

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India has received a boost before their Champions Trophy campaign when in-form opener Gautam Gambhir was passed fit to return after injury.

The left-hander has recovered from a groin strain and will travel with the team to South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India won the Colombo tournament, also involving New Zealand and the hosts, and went into the prestigious eight-team event as one of the favourites after not having lost a one-day series in the past year.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out until the end of the year after undergoing surgery on an injured shoulder. (ANI)

Indian cricket team leaves for Sri Lanka, Kirsten rues Sehwag’s absence for tri-series

Chennai, Sep. 9 (ANI): Before boarding a special Air Indian flight for Colombo on Wednesday,Indian cricket team coach Gary Kirsten said the team would draw inspiration from its past success in Sri Lanka and also cope with the “huge” loss of explosive opener Virender Sehwag during the the tri-series involving Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the island nation.

The Indians will play their first match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Asked who would be opening the innings with Gautam Gambhir, Kirsten said, “We are not sure about the combination. We would decide it on the day of the game. But obviously, missing Sehwag is huge. He is a high quality player and any team would love to have him in the mix. But we have got a lot of depth in the team.”

Kirsten also said that he was quite excited about Rahul Dravid’s return to the team after being out for close to two years.

“It’s great to have him. With the sort of experience he brings, it’s going to help the team. It’s great,” he said.

A clean-sweep in the short series would catapult India to the top of the ICC ODI rankings and Kirsten said being the best in the world is high on the team’s list of targets for the next eight months.

“We have set our goals. One of them is to be the best cricket team in the world. We are headed that way and we are very excited. We know we have to perform well as we continue the quest to be the best,” Kirsten said.

He said that the six week long break for the team was great.

Asked about the team’s chances in the tri-series, Kirsten said, “We won the last two series in Sri Lanka and we are confident. But we think ahead and don’t harp on the results ofthe past. We have got a good batting line-up which is quite flexible in the middle. We would like to mix it up during the series.” (ANI)

Jet Airways deadlock continues, flights cancelled

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): Jet Airways flights were cancelled for a second consecutive day on Wednesday following a row between the airline management and its pilots over the sacking of two of their senior colleagues.

The management has sacked five more pilots, bringing the total number of those fired to ten. owever, the striking pilots are seeking a compromise formula, as a meeting will be held between them and Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal.

Earlier, Goyal said inconvenienced passengers were being accommodated on other foreign and domestic airlines in the country.

“We are trying our best, we are transferring passengers to a lot of domestic carriers in India, and lot of foreign airlines in India so that we minimise the inconvenience to customers… We are willing to sit with them (pilots) and to follow certain guidelines and rules and not create inconvenience to customers and passengers,” Goyal told TIMES NOW.

Jet Airways had also sought the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) intervention to resolve the crisis. Last month, Jet Airways had terminated the services of two of its senior most pilots, saying their services were not required after both formed a trade union body within the company.

Meanwhile, Air India has come to the rescue of the Indian cricket team scheduled to go to Colombo today by a Jet Airways flight for the tri-nation one-day series.

ICC says champions league not in official calendar

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): The Champions League Twenty20 tournament will not be recognised as part of the official calendar of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the event due to be launched this October is played among domestic teams.

This was stated by Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICC in New Delhi on Thursday.

Lorgat clarified that the Champions League Twenty20 competition set to take place for the first time later this year has not been incorporated into the ICC’s future tours programme.

“We don’t create any domestic events in the future tours programmes, that’s an international programme.

What may have been misunderstood in this instance was that last year we were engaged in the challenger round hosting the Champions Trophy and once we had postponed it, we needed to find the window this year and because there was no existing window for the Champions Trophy we had made lots of arrangements with all of the member countries to create that window.

In that discussion we had also created for the Champions League because it was already there but there is no domestic event that is stated for the future tours programme,” he said.

The Champions League Twenty20 tourney to be played between October 8 and 23 will see 12 teams in action of which three are from hosts India, two each from Australia, England and South Africa and one each from New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, former Indian cricket team skipper Anil Kumble hoped that India, the defending champions of Twenty20 World Cup will retain the title in the second edition of this tournament due to commence on June 5 in England.

He termed the present Indian combination under M S Dhoni as the most balanced side and has the potential to emerge victorious.

“In my opinion, the Indian team is the best balanced side and you know if they play to their potential then they can definitely come back with the cup.

No matter what the conditions are, I think we are the best balanced side if you look at our team I mean it’s really a fantastic side,” said Kumble. (ANI)

Indian cricket team to leave for England today

Mumbai, May 29 (ANI): The Indian cricket team will leave for England on Friday for the second edition of the World T-20 Championship.

Ahead of their departure, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he had a balanced team, which could defend the World Twenty-20 title, which they won in South Africa in 2007.

“I am happy with the balance in our squad. Hopefully, we can defend out title,” he said.

Admitting that cricketers were tired after a hectic Indian Premier League (IPL), he said it helped players a lot in terms of exposure and skills.

“When you play so many matches you do get tired, after all it’s a human body. But IPL provided us with exposure and helped us to learn coping with the pressure of an international event,” he added.

The tournament will start from June 5. India will play its first match against Bangladesh on June 6.

Squad: M S Dhoni (Captain), Virender Sehwag (Vice-Captain), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, R P Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan. (ANI)

Loss of Zaheer will weaken Indian cricket team, says Ishant Sharma

New Delhi, May 28 (ANI): The loss of fast bowler Zaheer Khan could diminish India’s chances of retaining the Twenty20 World Cup.

Such was the view of his team mate and fellow pace bowler Ishant Sharma and he said this while interacting with media persons at a school which he visited here on Wednesday.

This visit to Modern School also happened to a promotional campaign for the ensuing Twenty20 World Cup tournament.

However, the 20-year-old Sharma exuded confidence by contending he can help make up for the absence of an injured Zaheer if he misses the Twenty20 World Cup cricket tournament in England, starting on June 5.

“Obviously, Zaheer Khan would have helped us. I don’t think its good news for the Indian cricket team. He is the senior most of bowlers of the side and he has helped me quite a lot and other fast bowlers in the side. It is going to be a tough time for the Indian fast bowlers,” said Sharma.

Meanwhile, Indian cricket team selectors are waiting for a favourable word from Zaheer who injured his left shoulder while playing in the second edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). He has stayed in South Africa for treatment.

The 30-year-old Zaheer Khan was in superb form alongside Sharma when they helped India win last year’s home Test series against Australia and England and also later in the series in New Zealand in April, this year.

Ishant Sharma also refused to blame captain Brendon McCullum or coach John Buchanan for the debacle of Kolkata Knight Riders in the recent IPL tourney. On the contrary, he attributed it to the team clicking as one.

“I feel it all depends upon the team which plays, be it with any captain or coach. I feel the whole team (Kolkata Knight Riders) didn’t play good cricket and that’s why we lost,” said Sharma.

Yet, the lanky Sharma seemed to be confident of leaving the nightmare behind and look ahead for the Twenty20 World Cup. He had sealed his slot in the Indian squad after he was chosen for the home Test series against Pakistan in late 2007. (ANI)

Mumbai, May 11 (ANI): Cricket fans in Mumbai sign up on a huge 80-feet long bat, sending best wishes for the Indian team ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in England beginning next month.

Put up on display in Mumbai, the huge bat was thrown open to cricket fans on Sunday to pen their best wishes for the Indian team.

“It is a very innovative way of wishing Indian cricket team. Earlier people used to wish by SMSing. It is a very innovative and useful way of wishing Indian cricket team which even they (the cricket team) won’t be able to ignore,” said Karan Singh, a fan.
