Two men are being questioned by Newcastle police over the stabbing of a teenager on an overnight train.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was stabbed several times in the chest and robbed of a small amount of cash.
The incident happened just after midnight on a train between Civic and Newcastle stations.
Two men, aged 19 and 21, were arrested and police expect to lay charges later this morning.
Ahmedabad, Sep.19 (ANI): In a major reprieve for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati Commission on Saturday confirmed that it would not be issuing any notice to him in connection with the communal riots in Veraval.
However, the commission has asked the State Government to give it transcripts of the conversations that took place prior to the riots, during the riots and in its aftermath.
The commission has so far given a clean chit to Modi in the post-Godhra events. The Nanavati Commission said there was no evidence to show there was lapse in Modi’s or his ministers’ role in providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and direction given by the National Human Rights Commission.
Communal attacks on Muslims took place in Gujarat between February and May 2002.
The riots occurred after the burning of the Sabarmati Express. According to official figures tabled in the parliament, more than a thousand people were killed (790 Muslims and 254 Hindus) in the violence after the train incident. More than two hundred and fifty thousand people were displaced (about 200,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus).
Organizations such as Human Rights Watch criticized the Indian government for failure to address the resulting humanitarian condition of people, “overwhelming majority of them Muslim,” who fled their homes for relief camps in the aftermath of the events.
Many of the investigations and prosecution of those accused of violence during the riots have been opened for reinvestigation and prosecution. According to an official estimate, 1044 people were killed in the violence, including those killed in the Godhra train fire. Another 223 people were reported missing, 2,548 injured, 919 women widowed and 606 children orphaned. About 100,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus were in relief camps. (ANI)
Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): A horny orang minyak, which is supposed to be a ghost in Malay culture, is said to be terrorising about 300 families in Sungai Petani, picking homes where there are young women.
According to Kosmo!, Nurshahirah, 17, revealed that she was awakened at 5.40am on September 14 after she felt a warm sensation on her left ear, and when she opened her eyes she saw an apparition with curly hair and thick moustache standing by her bed.
“I was even more shocked when the ghost took off his kain pelikat and started to fondle himself,” the Star Online quoted her as saying.
Nurshahirah, who lives in Taman Keladi, said she felt powerless to ward off the apparition who started to grope her body, and that it was as though a charm had been placed on her.
In another incident, housewife Fatimah, 42, revealed she heard her two daughters crying out when they were woken up at 5am by dark apparitions that molested them.
Her 15-year-old daughter told her that she had been “violated” by a ghost.
“At first I thought she was talking in her sleep but she insisted that she was molested by a ghost before it moved to the kitchen,” Fatimah said.
She said her 14-year-old, too, cried and ran from the living room, saying a dark apparition had molested her.
“My 14-year-old daughter said she managed to kick the ghost who wore a kain pelikat and black singlet when she felt her body being touched,” she revealed.
“She screamed and the ghost ran out of her room,” she added.
Fatimah said she gave chase with a parang but the apparition disappeared.
She also said the apparition could have placed a charm on her family because none of the neighbours heard her daughters’ screams. (ANI)
Islamabad, Sep.18 (ANI): At least 22 people were killed and more than 60 wounded in a suicide attack in Kohat on Friday.
According to eye witnesses, the attack took place near a bus stop where the attacker blew himself up inside a vehicle loaded with powerful explosives.
The blast was so powerful that it destroyed several hotels and small shops located near the bus stop on the Hangu Road in Kacchapakka.
Relief and rescue teams rushed to the spot immediately after the incident, while the injured persons have been shifted to the Liaquat Memorial and Division Hospitals.
Traffic on the Hangu road has been suspended completely after people started pelting stones on passing vehicles following the blast, The News reported. (ANI)
Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress president S. Samy Vellu has said that he will personally apologise to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the ‘slipper garland’ insult by a MIC member during the recent party congress.
He said he would seek an appointment with Dr Mahathir to tender his apology over the incident.
“I will meet him personally to explain the whole episode and extend my apology,” Samy Vellu said in a statement on Thursday.
The MIC chief said he and the MIC regretted the incident. “I have always had the highest respect for Tun Dr Mahathir. He is a great leader and a statesman.”
He said Dr Mahathir had brought tremendous development to the country and had united the people. “He will always be respected by us and all Malaysians,” The Star quoted Vellu, as saying.
Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said he did not feel anything about the incident and added: “Nothing would have happened to me.”
Instead, he said he would have felt angry and saddened if Umno members had made such an insult.
“This is not the first time I have been insulted. People might have forgotten how Umno leaders had insulted me. Nazri (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz) and the previous mentri besar of Kedah wanted me expelled from Umno.
However, then no one gave any reaction. No one dared to say anything,” he said. (ANI)
Karnal (Haryana)/New Delhi, Sep 17(ANI): Three persons were detained by the Haryana Police on Thursday for allegedly pelting stones at the train in which Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was traveling on Tuesday.
The Haryana police had, earlier, launched a massive manhunt for a group of young men who had allegedly pelted stones at the Swarn Shatabdi Express near Gharaunda town in Haryana, which was seen as a major security breach by the intelligence agencies.
“We have detained three suspects in this particular case. We have taken them for corroboration and have detained them for further questioning,” V Kamraj, Inspector General of Police.
Kamraj also informed that the three did not possess a criminal background.
“We have not arrested them, but have detained them. They have no criminal background. They are locals from Gharounda,” said Kamraj.
Gandhi had taken the train while returning from Ludhiana, where he went to attend a party youth workshop. Though no one was injured, windowpanes of C-2, C-4 and C-7 were damaged in the stone pelting.
Gandhi was seated in C-3 coach, which was not affected in the incident. (ANI)
Varanasi, Sep. 16 (ANI): Police on Wednesday resorted to a baton charge angry Samajwadi Party workers who were protesting against the Mayawati Government’s policies.
The incident took place when Samajwadi Party activists went to hand over a memorandum to the district magistrate.
Several protestors were injured, while some others were arrested.
Samajwadi Party workers have been protesting against the state government’s misuse of public funds for building memorials, a worsening law and order situation and failure to provide relief to flood victims. (ANI)
New Delhi, Sept 16 (ANI): The Indian Government on Wednesday called on the Australian Government to take stern action against the perpetrators of alleged racial assaults on Indians in Melbourne, Victoria.
External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in a statement that the matter of the recurring attacks on Indians in Australia had been taken up with Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith by Indian High Commissioner Sujatha Singh.
“As we take note of the assurances given, including from the highest levels of the government and provincial authorities of Australia, it is our earnest hope that the concerned authorities would take all necessary steps towards the safety and security of Indians in that country,” said Prakash in a statement.
“The Indian Consul General in Melbourne is in contact with authorities in Victoria including the police authorities,” he added.
“We hope that the latest incident is investigated with care and the culprits are dealt with, according to the laws of the land. It would also help, if various measures being contemplated by the Australian side, in addition to those already announced, are put in place at the earliest, to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents in the future,” Prakash said.
Officials of the Consulate General of India in Melbourne, are also in touch with family members of the victims.
Two Indian nationals and two other persons of Indian origin were assaulted by a group of individuals at Melbourne late in the evening on September 12.
One of the Indian nationals, Sukhdip Singh sustained serious injuries and is presently undergoing treatment.
“We are informed that the police arrested four individuals who have since been released pending further investigations,” Prakash said. (ANI)
New Delhi, Sep 16 (ANI): A Chinese man was hospitalised after he was stung by more than a hundred bees while chopping a tree last week.
The incident took place in Changjiang, Hainan province, reports the China Daily.
Chen, a farmer, had to be rushed to the hospital by his colleague, and others who feared for his life.
“The bees didn’t leave him for a good 10 minutes. We thought he was dead,” one of his colleagues said. (ANI)
Chak Allah Bakhash (Punjab), Sept. 15 (ANI): The prices of farming land have plunged following past week’s rocket-shelling incident in the India-Pakistan border villages.
Local farmers say that it was already quite tough to find buyers for the land situated beyond fencing and the latest rocket-shelling incident has caused the prices to drop further.
Fenced from three sides, Village Chak Allah Bakhash at the International border has nearly 150 acres of land beyond fencing.
Balwinder Kaur, one of the natives in village Chak Allah Bakhash, said that it was already difficult for her to meet the daily expenditure.
Sucha Singh, another villager, said: “My family owns a piece of land across fencing and has been facing many difficulties while cultivating the land at the border. There are no takers for our land.”
Nearly 553 km long barbed fencing of the Punjab border along side Pakistan resulted in thousands of acres of land being left beyond fencing.
The price of the land spread before fencing line is nearly three times higher than the vast land spread beyond the fencing.
An acre of land, located before fencing, is available for approximately 600,000 to 10,00,000 rupees whereas more fertile land, located beyond the fencing, is worth about 200,000 to 300,000 rupees per acre.
Mandatory frisking by security men at the border gates of the fence and restricted working hours and few objections could be some of the reasons for a lesser price of land beyond fencing.

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI): The Taliban’s threat has still not subsided in the Swat and Malakand Divisions as the security forces have found that the extremists have created a new stronghold in the region and are planning strikes from there.
According to senior officials, the Taliban, after being forced to retreat following the military operation, have shifted their base to the rough terrains between Batkhela and Jalala on the Mardan-Swat Highway and trying to regroup.
“It is from here that they are building their arms arsenals, training camps, logistics and propaganda centres,” officials said.
Over 200 people in the region have received handwritten and typed death threats in the past fortnight which proves that the Taliban is alive and kicking here.
“We are aware of how you assist security agencies and act against Islam. You are going to face the wrath of God,” one of the letter stated.
One of such threat mail has also been received by former North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Minister, Kamal Shah, who said the extremists have taken refuge in Shergarh, Batkhela, Chakdara, Iroshah, Shakh Number Panch, Jabban Road, Palai Sherkhanai, Sakhakot, Jalala and other villages on the Highway and are waiting to strike.
Security officials said they are aware of the development and the threat mails being sent by the Taliban. They said steps are being taken to thwart any untoward incident and block the supplies of arms and ammunition to the extremists.
“We are on their heels and are making all efforts to block arms and ammunition supplies to them from the channels developed by Taliban through Mohmand Agency, the adjoining areas of Malakand like Palai Sherkhani and Jabban Iroshah Road,” The News quoted a senior official, as saying. (ANI)
Melbourne, Sep.16 (ANI): Victoria Police has denied they had a plan to limit publicity about the bashing of four Indian men outside a Melbourne pub on Saturday night.
Four men were arrested in relation to assault and affray, but they were released pending further investigations.
Police believe a fifth man may also have been involved in the bashing outside a pub at Epping in Melbourne’s east.
Details of the incident only emerged publicly today, prompting an outraged Indian media to claim Victoria Police had been involved in a cover-up.
Police said the Indian media were made aware of the incident via “other channels”.
Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Parker said there was no cover-up, although he did admit the police media department would have known about the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“Unfortunately, this type of incident occurs regularly. This is really treated no differently to any other event of this type. There has been no deliberate attempt to suppress it. It’s just part of normal procedure. It’s attracted more media attention than anticipated,” news.com.au quoted him, as saying.
According to the police, the four men were playing pool on Saturday night at a bar in High St, Epping, when a female hurled a racist remark at them.
The men left not long after but were followed into a car park by up to four males who were part of a larger group celebrating a birthday in the bar’s function room.
It has been alleged the Indian men were set upon and seriously assaulted by the group of males.
Police were called and arrested four males, who were interviewed in relation to assault and affray. ll four were released pending further investigations.
While only four men were arrested, one of the alleged victims told ABC Radio today that more than 70 people could have been involved.
He said the attackers didn’t use weapons, but racism was behind the incident.
“Definitely racism,” he said.
Police say that when the arrests were made, a group of about 15 men and women, who had been celebrating a birthday, directed racist abuse at the Indian men.
As the victims were escorted away by police, officers allege the larger group continued its “threatening behaviour and racist remarks”. (ANI)
Patna, Sept 15 (ANI): Voting has begun for the by-election to 11 of the 18 assembly constituencies in Bihar this morning.
The polling will decide the fate of 99 contestants, including nine women.
The Janata Dal (United) is contesting from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Triveniganj, Fulwari, Ghosi, Simri Bakhtiarpur and Munger constituencies while the BJP is from Bodh Gaya, Begusarai and Araria.
The RJD and the LJP has fielded its candidates from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Fulwari, Munger, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Ghosi; and Bodh Gaya, Begusarai, Araria and Triveniganj respectively.
The Congress is contesting from all the constituencies.
Around 25,15,474 electors are expected to cast their vote at 2,620 polling stations spread over Bagha, Nautan, Begusarai, Triveniganj, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Araria, Dhoraiya, Munger, Fulwari, Ghosi and Bodh Gaya.
Central paramilitary force personnel have been pressed into service to avoid any kind of untoward incident. (ANI)
Patna, Sep 14 (ANI): Unidentified persons in Patna kidnapped an eight-year-old boy at gunpoint in Patna on Monday at 7.30 am.hreyas Srivastava, is a standard one student at Christ church school in Kankarbagh area.
According to the police, the incident occurred early morning when Shreyas Srivastava was going to school along with other students in an auto-rickshaw when three motorcycle-borne persons stopped the auto-rickshaw at gunpoint.
“The incident occurred around 7.30 in the morning. The boy along with other children was going to school in the auto- rickshaw. Three men stopped the vehicle between Maurya hotel and exhibition road and took the child away on his motorbike,” said Parsh Nath Rai, Inspector General.
However, the kidnappers had not made any demand till morning.
Meanwhile, the police are interrogating the auto-rickshaw driver for further investigations. (ANI)
New York, Sep 14(ANI): American tennis star Serena Williams has said she won’t apologise to the lineswoman for her outburst during her US Open semi-final defeat by Kim Clijsters.
“An apology from me? Know many people yell at linespeople? Players, athletes get frustrated,” The Mirror quoted Williams, as saying.
Williams lost her cool after being foot-faulted at the end of the contest. She unleashed a tirade on the line judge, briefly walked away and then returned for another blast at the line judge. he incident saw her receiving a point penalty for a second code violation, thus handing the semi-final match to Clijsters 6-4, 7-5.
Williams was unrepentant about the incident even during her post-match press conference as well, where she claimed she did not remember what she had said to the line judge.
Williams has been fined 10,000 dollars by US Open organisers for her outburst. (ANI)
London, Sep 14 (ANI): Irish actor Colin Farrell reportedly became very furious with a photographer at the premiere of his new movie ‘Triage’ after the latter shooed his sister off the red carpet.
Farrell, 33, was at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada on September 12 with his sister and personal assistant Claudine when the incident took place.
The snapper had asked Farrell’s sister to step away from his side so that he can get a clear shot, but the actor became infuriated with the suggestion and confronted the photographer.
“I was just saying, ‘Please can everyone clear the carpet, move on’. He took it personal. He said, ‘Do not shout at my sister like that, do not ever speak to my sister like that ever’,” the Daily Express quoted Joe Alvarez as saying. (ANI)
Baghdad, Sep. 14 (ANI): Iraq has postponed the release of the journalist who threw his shoe at former US President George W Bush in Baghdad last year.raqi television journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi will be released from prison a day later than expected, his brother said.
“He called me from the prison and said ‘they won’t release me today, they will free me tomorrow’,” The Telegraph quoted Durgham al-Zaidi, as saying in tears.
Zaidi, 30, was initially sentenced to three years for assaulting a foreign head of state but had his jail time reduced to one year on appeal. He is being freed early because of good behaviour.
Zaidi shouted “it is the farewell kiss, you dog,” at Bush on December 14 last year, seconds before hurling his size-10 shoes at the man who ordered Iraq be invaded and occupied six-and-a-half years ago.
Although Bush, who successfully ducked to avoid the speeding footwear, laughed off the attack, the incident caused massive embarrassment, to both him and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Zaidi faces the prospect of a very different life from his previous existence as a journalist for Al-Baghdadia television, a small, privately owned Cairo-based station, which has continued to pay his salary in jail.

Canberra (Australia), Sep. 14 (ANI): Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Julia Gillard said every effort would be made by her government to ensure the safety of international students in the country.
She was speaking on the opening day of a two-day round table meeting in Canberra on Monday to discuss major issues of concern for international students, Sinhua reports.
The overseas student industry, worth 15.5 billion Australian dollars, has been under scrutiny following an outcry earlier this year over violence against Indian students.
“When you’re talking about these grossly objectionable, violent incidents, you’re talking about a number of less than 10 and we are talking about around 100,000 Indian students in the country,” Gillard later told reporters.
“But I can understand why, having seen even one incident — mums and dads having sent their sons and daughters far from home to study would be concerned,” she added.
Gillard told the 31 assembled students, representing every continent on the globe, their voice was deeply important.
She said their views will be fed into Council of Australian Governments (COAG) deliberations on how to boost the international student experience and a parliamentary review that is currently underway. (ANI)

A number of activists assembled at the Hathi Gate Chowk of Amritsar and burnt Pakistan’s national flag.
The protestors said that they burnt the Pakistan’s national flag to express their anguish and register protest against the rockets lobbed from the Pakistani soil into Indian Territory.
Carrying a banner in their hands, the activists shouted anti-Pakistan slogans.
Protestors demanded that the Government of India should force Pakistan to stop anti-India activities immediately.

New Delhi, Sep 12 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will visit on Saturday the site of the helicopter crash, where former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and four others were killed, in order to probe the crash at Pavirallagutta in the dense Nallamalla forests.
The CBI multi-disciplinary investigation team (MDIT) would be headed by Deputy Inspector General V V Lakshmi Narayana and comprise officers from the Indian Air Force and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation also.
The CBI would also inquire whether any sabotage was behind the crash and what forced the helicopter to deviate from its set path, besides the response from the Air Traffic Control(ATC) in Chennai.
The CBI probe has been ordered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Such a probe is conducted by a police officer specially empowered by the State Government when the deceased has been killed by another or by an animal or by machinery or by an accident.
A two-member expert committee is already investigating the incident. It has been told to submit its report in two months. (ANI)
