Halma India appoints Mahadev Dhuri as India sales manager for Ophthalmic Specialists Keeler and Volk

Mumbai, Sept 17 (ANI/Business Wire India) — Halma India, the Mumbai-based hub office of Halma p.l.c., has appointed Mahadev Dhuri as India sales manager for two of its ophthalmic companies, Keeler Limited and Volk Optical Inc.

The two companies are world leaders in their respective fields. Keeler, based in the UK, manufactures products such as direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, non-contact tonometers and slit lamps, while Volk Optical, based in the USA, is a specialist in patented double aspherical optics.

Based in Mumbai, Mahadev will serve Keeler and Volk customers and distributors throughout India, offering educational and sales support for both companies’ complete product lines.

He will work closely with doctors and facilities to help them select, use and install diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical ophthalmic instruments and accessories to facilitate the growth of ophthalmology in India.

He will also continue to develop the Indian distributor networks, training new and existing distributors, and increasing the company’s conference and tradeshow presence.

Mahadev, a trained biomedical engineer, joins Halma from Toshbro Medicals, a leading Indian specialist selling German and US medical instrumentation equipment into India.

Prior to that he spent eight years with Larsen and Toubro Limited developing the company’s medical equipment business across western, central and northern India. (ANI)

Biocon limited, Amylin pharmaceuticals enter global development agreement

Bangalore/ California Sep 11(ANI/Business Wire India): Biocon, Limited (NSE: BIOCON) and Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMLN) announced today that they have entered into an exclusive agreement to jointly develop, commercialize and manufacture a novel peptide therapeutic for the potential treatment of diabetes.

Amylin and Biocon will collaborate to develop the therapeutic potential of the compound and share development costs. Research will center on Amylin’s “phybrid” technology. A phybrid is a peptide hybrid molecule that combines the pharmacological effects of two peptide hormones into a single molecular entity.

Guns N’ Roses coming to India

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): American rock band Guns N’ Roses are set to organize a concert in India.

According to reports, the band, fronted by Axl Rose, have already signed on to perform at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on 7 November (09).

However, local promoters are in talks with people in Mumbai, Delhi and Shillong.

“It is true that we are bringing Guns N’ Roses to India,” Contactmusic quoted Raj Sinha, director of Rhapsody Inc., the company behind the confirmed Bengaluru concert, as saying.

“As of now, I can tell you that the Bengaluru concert has been confirmed. We’re still in talks with people in Mumbai and Delhi, so let’s hope that works out. However, there is a good chance we can take the band to Shillong as well.

“I can confirm that Axl Rose and Dizzy Reed will be there. DJ Ashba, their latest (addition), will be there. There will also be a person called Troy and two other members,” he added. (ANI)

Oral asthma controllers more effective than inhalers

Washington, Aug 26 (ANI): Asthmatic patients are more likely to benefit from oral controllers than inhalers, say Mayo clinic researchers.

“Clinical superiority of the inhaled products has been well documented in clinical trials and the HealthCore study confirmed this for those who take their medication properly,” said Dr. Joseph Singer, vice president of clinical affairs for HealthCore, the outcomes research subsidiary for WellPoint, Inc.

“However, we were surprised to discover that in looking at all patients in real-world settings, oral controllers appeared to be a better choice of treatment because of better compliance.

“Patients with the best outcomes were those who were compliant with inhaled corticosteroids,” he added.

During the study, researchers looked at 55, 000 patients from eight health plans who had used at least one of six types of asthma controller medications between 2003 and 2005.

Both oral and inhaled treatments offered comparable impacts on patient-reported quality of life and productivity.

Among patients taking more than one drug to control their asthma, HealthCore found that a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists were the best course of treatment in terms of better clinical outcomes and better quality of life.

In the group of patients who adhered to their medication, those taking leukotriene modifiers-oral asthma controllers-were more likely to have an emergency room or inpatient physician visit, less likely to use six or more short-acting beta agonist canisters and incurred higher annual costs.

“It’s important for physicians and health plans alike to know that ‘one size fits all’ does not apply when treating asthma patients,” said Singer.

“These results speak to the power of comparative effectiveness research and its ability to give physicians the information they need to customize treatment for patients in the real world,” he added. (ANI)

15th century Peruvians sacrificed humans to appease El Nino

Caracas (Venezuela), July 16 (ANI): Archaeologists have found evidence that a woman from the Chimu culture was buried alive in the 15th century at the Chan Chan archaeological complex in Peru to ameliorate the various effects of what we today call the El Nino weather phenomenon.

“This is the first time that evidence has been found that some people from the epoch were buried alive to prevent, in this case, the actions of El Nino from having effects on the city of mud,” said Cristobal Campana from Peru’s National Institute of Culture (INC).

According to a report in Latin American Herald Tribune, the skeletal remains of the woman, who was in her early 20s, were found during work to restructure the western perimeter wall of the Nain An (House of the birds) palace, which is part of the Chan Chan mud citadel.

The archaeological complex is recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site, but it is also on the list of imperiled sites because of the fragility of its structures due to the effect of the rains and intense heat in the region.

Chan Chan is one of the most important ceremonial centers in northern Peru.

The skeletal remains are of a woman who stood 1.55 meters (5 feet) tall, who was strangled and buried alive, from the position of her arms and jaw, which reflect her final desperate struggle to free herself from the fabric tied around her throat, according to Campana.

In addition, the victim had had both feet amputated in the same manner that the Chimu did with other sacrificial victims at another palace in the same region.

According to Campana, the remains will be removed this week from inside a structure that is protecting them from sun and rain, and they will be taken for further study to the INC laboratory in the province of La Libertad, where Chan Chan is located. (ANI)

New military robot to fuel itself by gobbling up dead bodies

Washington, July 15 (ANI): A Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find – grass, wood, old furniture, or even dead bodies.

Robotic Technology Inc.’s Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR) “can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable,” reads the company’s Web site.

Animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they’d be plentiful in a war zone.

EATR will be powered by the Waste Heat Engine developed by Cyclone Power Technology of Pompano Beach, Florida, which uses an “external combustion chamber” burning up fuel to heat up water in a closed loop, generating electricity.

The advantages to the military are that the robot would be extremely flexible in fuel sources and could roam on its own for months, even years, without having to be refueled or serviced.

Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things – a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship.

Robotic Technology is presenting EATR as an essentially benign artificial creature that fills its belly through “foraging,” despite the obvious military purpose. (ANI)

India Inc. disappointed with Mukherjee’s budget for 2009-10

New Delhi/Mumbai, July 6 (ANI): India Incorporated on Monday reacted with disappointment to the proposals for Budget 2009-10 introduced by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

It said that Mukherjee had remained silent on key points like the revamp of fuel policy, corporate tax, and the disinvestment roadmap.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex suffered the biggest fall on any Budget day and in the year too by plunging over 869 points on the BSE on concerns at the high fiscal deficit (6.8 percent) set by the Union Budget.

The Sensex, which started coming down soon after the announcement of budgetary proposals, dipped below the 14,000-point level before closing 869.65 points down at 14,043.40, surpassing the hefty fall of 749 points on January 7.

The key index had touched the day’s low of 13,959.44 as all the heavyweight stocks led by Reliance Industries suffered a heavy loss 6.53 per cent. Besides the fiscal deficit, trading sentiment also affected as European stocks dipped to a seven-week low on worries that economic recovery might still be far way off. The 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty also tumbled by 258.55 points to 4,135.70, after hitting the day’s low of 4,133.70.

Banking sector stocks suffered the most, losing 8.17 per cent to 7,768.63, as ICICI Bank tumbled by 10 per cent and HDFC Bank by 5.88 per cent among lenders as the Budget did not have measures to open up the industry and on concerns that the borrowing plan will reduce the value of bond holdings, brokers said.

Apart from the fiscal deficit, the other worry for captains of industry was the hike in Minimum Alternate Tax from ten to fifteen percent.

The Nifty also gave a thumbs down to the budget announcements.

Mukherjee left the corporate tax, customs and excise duty structure unchanged. He abolished the Fringe Benefit Tax which was the bugbear of the industry. Also, the deadline for Corporate India’s demand for a rollout of Goods and Services Tax has been set as April 2010.

He left the Securities Tax unchanged but scrapped the Commodities Transaction Tax. (ANI)

S M Krishna wraps up visit to Japan

Tokyo, July 5 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. M Krishna on Sunday concluded his four-day visit to Japan.

During his visit, Krishna interacted with people of Indian origin living here.

Paying rich tributes to the Indian diaspora, Krishna on Saturday said that Indians in Japan played a key role in building “new bridges” between the two countries.

“Your (Indian community living in Japan) contribution to sharing dynamism of the new India which is emerging today is equally noteworthy. As you help to build new bridges between India and Japan. I’m confident that you will do so with diligence, creativity, enterprise that has become the hallmark of the Indian diaspora all over the world,” said Krishna.

Indians first came to Japan about 140 years ago and currently there are some 21,000 people of Indian origin in Japan, a quarter of them reaching there in the past three years.

Earlier, Krishna inaugurated a new chancery building of the Indian Embassy.he building and its cultural centre will serve as a base for Indians and Japanese for further strengthening the ties.

Plants Associates Inc. has built the chancery with the help of the Shimizu Corporation, a Japanese construction firm.

Later, he also visited the Asakusa Shrine in the city.

The shrine, which is also known as Sanja-sama (“Shrine of the Three Gods”), is one of the most famous Shinto shrines of Tokyo. It is located in Asakusa and honors the three men who founded the Senso-ji.

Krishna had earlier participated in the third annual bilateral strategic dialogue between India and Japan.

Krishna held discussions on a wide array of bilateral and global issues including disarmament and climate change, during his participation in the strategic dialogue with Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone. (ANI)

Government adopts zero tolerance against ragging

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Union Government reiterated its stand of zero tolerance for ragging in institutions of higher education and said tough regulations have been put in force against this menace.

Replying a short duration discussion on increasing incidents of ragging in the country in Rajya Sabha today Union Human Resource Minister Kapil Sibal said the policy of the government shall be zero tolerance for anti social activities like ragging.

Sibal said stringent measures against ragging could include rustication of student, withholding of scholarship, derecognising the institution, debarring student from appearing in any test and stopping of grant to the institution.

He said previously, the government made its mind to educate students to not to indulge in ragging activities, but now the focus would be on taking strict measures to prevent ragging incidents.

Ruling out the demand for national law against ragging, Sibal said the regulations made by the University Grant Commission (UGC) have the backing of the constitution, and all educational institutions in the country have to abide by these regulations.

The HRD minister also disclosed that his ministry has written letter to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Medical Council of India (MCI), Dental Council of India (DCI) and Indian Nursing Council (INC) to adopt the regulations made by the UGC against ragging.

In the mid June President of India wrote a letter to the Governors and Lt Governors of all the states to use their office to control the menace of ragging in their respective states. (ANI)

Washington, Jul 3 (ANI): American glamour model/actress Carmen Electra has come out tops at the models vs. actresses Bikini Olympics.

According to RadarOnline.com, three experts passed the ratings on six of the top beauties in each glam group, with all the contestants wearing bikinis.

The experts consulted were Dr. Anthony Youn, a plastic surgeon from Rochester Hills, Mich. and a regular commentator on E! Entertainment Network; Dr. Edward Jackowski, author of the best-selling book, “Escape Your Shape” and CEO of fitness and nutrition company Exude, Inc.; and Bob Esquerre, a top fitness trainer and CEO of Esquerre Fitness Group.

The judges graded them on sex appeal, body proportion and tone, and Electra, who wore a white bikini and looked really great, won hands down.

“She’s one of the hottest women in Hollywood,” Fox News quoted Dr. Youn as saying about her.

Dr. Jackowski was equally appreciative, noting: “Carmen’s strong, yet feminine look is very alluring and extremely sexy.”

Esquerre also put her in first place, and pointed out: “Every curve, every nuance of her body and posture oozes sex appeal.”

The two other ladies, who made the top of the list, were Bar Refaeli and Anna Faris. (ANI)

Naga ancestral sites dated back to 7th century AD

Dimapur, July 2 (ANI): In a new research, scientists have chronologically dated five ancestral settlement sites within Nagaland as belonging to the 7th century AD.

According to a report in The Morung Express, based on the study of oral tradition and folklore of the tribes of Kohima, Phek, and Mokokchung Districts, five prominent ancient settlement sites considered as important centres of population dispersal were identified.

An archaeological investigation was also carried out at the ancestral site at Chungliyimti, it informed.

Archaeological excavations were conducted at four of the ancestral settlement sites in the second phase of the project.

The archaeological investigation has revealed the dates of the sites extending back to as early as 7th century AD.

The radiocarbon dates obtained from the Beta Analytic Inc., Miami, Florida and Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, Lucknow from all the sites under excavation is being considered as a major breakthrough in the archaeology of Northeast India.

The Anthropological Society of Nagaland has also termed as significant the discovery of an early Neolithic cave site in the vicinity of Mimi village from the Naga Ophiolite Belt area in Kiphire District bordering Myanmar.

Few Neolithic tools, ash deposits, cord marked potteries, animal bones, and a human burial were also excavated from the limestone cave.

An AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) date on the ash deposit obtained from the Beta Analytic Inc., Miami, Florida place the site within Circa Cal. BC 4460 – 4340.

The team led by Dr. Tiatoshi Jamir and two other archaeologists Dr. David Tetso and Dr. Zokho Venuh who carried out the excavation has been conducting extensive exploration on the limestone caves since the early part of January this year.

According to the archaeologists, the date is significant as far as the Neolithic sites of Eastern and Northeastern region are concerned as it further pushes back the beginning of the Neolithic era in the region.

Thus far, no Neolithic site of this antiquity has been reported from the Eastern and Northeastern region of India.

Study on the ash deposits for identification of botanical remains, animal and human remains are currently underway and it is hoped that more scientific data on the cave evidence will come to light. (ANI)

Incisionless procedure ‘reverses weight gain after gastric bypass surgery’

Washington, June 30 (ANI): Scientists have offered an incisionless procedure to reverse weight gain after gastric bypass surgery.

To perform the procedure, known as ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal), a small, flexible endoscope and tools are inserted through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach pouch during an outpatient procedure.

The tools, developed by USGI Medical Inc., are used to grasp, fold and stitch tissue to reduce both the diameter of the stomach opening and the volume of the stomach pouch. No cuts are made into the patient’s skin.

Santiago Horgan, MD, professor of surgery and director of the Center for the Treatment of Obesity at UC San Diego, looked at the six-month outcomes from a national registry of 116 patients who underwent the procedure.

The data showed that 88 percent of the patients stopped regaining weight after ROSE.

Overall, these 96 patients lost an average 18 percent of their excess weight six months after the procedure. For the purposes of the registry, excess body weight is defined as anything over a body mass index rating of 55.

One patient in the study lost 66 pounds or 84 percent of her excess weight during that six-month time period. Patients who were most successful losing weight after their original gastric bypass had the best results following the ROSE procedure.

This subset of patients dropped 29 percent of their excess weight during the six months after ROSE.

“We believe this registry represents the largest collection of data showing the effectiveness, safety and durability of the ROSE procedure,” said Horgan.

“There are not many options to repair a failing gastric bypass. Invasive procedures to restore the anatomy are complicated and risky for most patients. In comparison, there were no significant complications associated with ROSE and most of the patients lost clinically relevant amounts of weight,” Horgan added.

The data was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. (ANI)

Paris Hilton’s plea to dismiss contract breach suit rejected

Washington, May 20 (ANI): A Miami Federal Court judge has refused to dismiss a breach of contract lawsuit against hotel heiress Paris Hilton, and directed her to stand trial.

Paris has been accused of neglecting to honour promotion and publicity agreements related to her 2006 film ‘Pledge This’.

Bosses at Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc. claim that she owes investors a whopping 8.3million dollars.

Paris was said to have been paid 1million dollars for her acting services and for “reasonable promotion and publicity” for the film, which featured her as the president of an exclusive sorority.

WEG spokesperson Michael Goldberg insists that investors have suffered a loss of more than 8.3million dollars due to Paris’ failure to promote the film’s DVD release.

The judge hearing the heiress’ legal team to dismiss the lawsuit agreed that the case should be heard, reports Contactmusic.

The trial is scheduled to begin on June 8. (ANI)

Inca stone with 41 angles discovered in Peru

Lima (Peru), May 14 (ANI): An Inca stone of 41 angles was found during the archaeological excavations that are being carried out these days by the National Institute of Culture (INC) in Torontoy, in the area of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru.

According to information received, the finding was confirmed by the president of the project, Omar Spanish Gutierrez, who referred that the stone measures are 6 meters high and 2,50 meters wide, and also said that it has the form of a flame.

The archaeologist Mario Febran Gomez, said that the stone is located in the religious precinct Nro. 9 of the sector of Torontoy (kilometer 91,500 of the way Cusco-Machu Picchu). (ANI)

Paris Hilton embroiled in $8.3M movie promotion lawsuit

New Delhi, May 08 (ANI): Paris Hilton has defended herself against a lawsuit claiming she owes investors 8.3 million dollars for not fully promoting her 2006 film ‘Pledge This!”

The lawsuit was filed in Miami by Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc, reports the China Daily.

Company spokesperson Michael Goldberg has claimed Hilton’s failure to plug the movie’s DVD release cost investors more than 8.3 million dollars.

In a Miami Federal Court deposition, the socialite insists she honoured her contract and blames her overflowing work schedule for not meeting what she claims were last-minute demands.

“Any chance I got, any red carpet, any press, if I was doing something for another product … I would just bring it up. ‘Oh, my new sorority film, it’s going to be sexy, it’s going to be really hot girls’ — like I really, you know, did my best,” she said.

Hilton’s lawyer, Michael Weinstein added at a pre-trial motion hearing: “She’s the single busiest person on the planet.” (ANI)

Adultery business booming in recession

London, May 4 (ANI): While the world is suffering from the ongoing recession, it has proved to be a boon for adultery business.

Ashley Madison agency, which revels in the motto, “Life is short. Have an affair,” is booming as its membership has soared from one million to 3.6 million in just 12 months.

Noel Biderman, the company’s founder and chief executive said that many couples who would otherwise have divorced were seeking affairs at the moment because of the cost of hiring lawyers and the difficulty of selling the marital home.

The company has recently launched a new promotional campaign, targeting potential adulterers with TV ads placed on peak-viewing daytime slots.

He hopes his business will flourish even more with the launch of a service allowing members to access the site from their mobile phones.

“We’re not just recession-proof, we’re booming,” the Telegraph quoted Biderman, 37, a happily married father-of-two who set up the business in his home city of Toronto in 2001.

The advertisement features an attractive woman enduring a dreadful dinner date with a boorish man.

“Have you ever found yourself on a really bad blind date?” asks the voice-over. “Now imagine that date lasting the rest of your life.”

Although it is free to register with Ashley Madison, but members pay with purchased credits to send messages to other users.

It charges 49 dollars for 100 credits or 249 dollars for 1,000 credits and 50 credits buys 60 minutes of instant messaging time or 10 emails to different users.

Mr Biderman is planning a full launch later this year of the business in Britain and Ireland, where it already has 25,000 registered users.

However, Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Centre, a conservative monitoring group the commercials has criticised the commercials for promoting “Home Wreckers Inc”. (ANI)

Verizon posts better-than-expected profits

New York – Verizon Communications Inc, the second-largest US phone company, had better-than-expected profits of about 3.2 billion dollars in the first quarter as customers laid out more money for text messaging and other services. Sales rose 12 per cent to 26.6 billion dollars, bolstered by the purchase of Alltel Corp. But global business revenues dropped 3.4 per cent as companies fired workers and delayed new purchases, Bloomberg financial news service reported.

Verizons net income was 3.21 billion dollars. Taking into account its partnership with Vodafone Group Plc, year-ago net income amounted to 3.05 billion dollars.

The average monthly bill for a wireless customer had fallen less than 1 per cent, to 50.74 dollars.

With the wireless market reaching 90 per cent saturation, Verizon is looking for new opportunities, including the marriage of its wireless service to netbooks – mini-laptops that can sell for less than 500 dollars, a person close to the project told Bloomberg.

Verizon’s fiber-optics business – which offers high-definition television and high-speed internet – is also growing, after doubling from 1 million to 2.2 million television subscribers in the past year. Internet subscribers increased 56 per cent to 2.78 million.(dpa)
