Southern Calif. Gets 1 Million Smart Meters

Southern California Edison (SCE) has installed one-fifth of the 5 million smart meters that it plans to swap in for customers by 2012.

The utility started its Edison SmartConnect program in September 2009, replacing manual meters (image, left) with smart meters (image, right) for small business and residential customers.

Instead of only measuring monthly energy use and needing to be read manually like previous meters, the smart meters provide more current energy use for customers and can be read remotely.

The digital meters provide two-way communication between the utility and customers, providing business customers with energy use information in 15-minute increments and residential customers with their energy use in one-hour increments. SCE also is providing energy pricing plans that lower costs by shifting energy use to off-peak times like evenings and weekends.

Later this year, SCE customers with smart meters will be able to view energy use information online to track how much energy they use and how much it costs. SCE’s smart meters will also eventually be able to communicate with smart thermostats, appliances and other home devices, allowing customers to have more control over how much energy they use and when they use it.

Hampshire police unveil new ‘Noddy car’ for patrols

London, May 20 (ANI): Hampshire Police have unveiled a 1,000-pound, pedal-powered patrol car complete with siren and flashing lights.

PC Keith Waller believes that engaging youngsters to construct the trendy Noddy-car vehicle for the British Pedal Car Grand Prix will help the community.

“Getting youngsters involved gives them something to focus on so they are not committing antisocial behaviour,” The Times quoted him as saying.

He spent 40 hours building it with teenagers at Ringwood Comprehensive School to try to make the image of the police “cooler”, but he admitted that it drew comparisons with Mr Plod from Noddy. (ANI)

Why Lily Allen walked away from her music career

London, May 14 (ANI): ‘Smile’ hitmaker Lilly Allen has disclosed the reason why she decided to walk away from her music career – she got “fed up” with her own image.

“I just feel like I”m at a point in my life where I should be at home more and not sort of traveling the world,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling GMTV.

The British singer announced earlier this year she is planning a hiatus from recording and performing live to concentrate on launching a designer clothes hire shop and setting up her own record company.

“I”m still working on music and still writing music, maybe for other people. I”m involved with trying to make a musical at the moment. But I”m just sort of fed up with Lily Allen – the character,” she said.

“Many people in my position quite frankly go a bit mad and that”s because they are pushing it too hard. So it”s actually a sensible thing to do,” she concluded. (ANI)

Chelsea must now dominate, says skipper Terry after title triumph

London, May 11 (ANI): Blues skipper John Terry has said that Chelsea FC must now dominate Premier League football watching Manchester United dominate for three years.

“The last couple of years, we”ve pushed them a little bit closer. It”s hurt so, so deep inside. That”s how the Chelsea fans must be feeling after they had a taste of success. In the past few years, we”ve had success in the FA Cup and done really well there. But it”s been heartbreaking in the league. It”s horrible when you”re sitting there watching the other team pick up the trophy,” Terry said.

“It”s been three years and we thoroughly enjoyed it. That”s what it”s all about. We want to kick on again next year, year after year just keep winning the trophy back-to-back.”

Ancelotti will have the authority to shape the team even more in his own image after this success and as Terry paid tribute to the Italian he suggested Chelsea no longer need to apologise for the way they win trophies.

Terry added: “I”m proud of everything we have done this year. (ANI)

Sunlight reflection confirms presence of liquid on Saturn”s moon Titan

Washington, May 6 (ANI): NASA”s Cassini Spacecraft has captured a glint of light reflecting from the surface of Saturn”s moon Titan, which confirms the presence of a lake filled with liquid.

The discovery makes Titan the only place besides Earth known to have a body of liquid on its surface.

Stephan et al. report the first detection of a directly visible glint, also called a specular reflection, which occurs when sunlight reflects off a smooth, mirror-like liquid surface.

NASA”s Cassini Spacecraft captured an image of the glint on 8 July 2009, and the researchers determined that it came from Kraken Mare, a large, lake-shaped basin near Titan”s north pole.

Until recently the northern polar regions of Titan had been in winter darkness since Cassini”s arrival in 2004; the recent direct illumination by sunlight made it possible to observe these optical reflections for the first time. (ANI)

Outrage over Oklahoma church’s display of Jesus with penis

Washington, April 17 (ANI): Churchgoers in Oklahoma are reportedly outraged with a crucifix in a Catholic church that they say shows an image of genitalia on Jesus.

According to NewsOk.com, the crucifix, which hangs above the church’s main altar, has caused a deep divide among parishioners at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

“There are a couple people who have left the parish,” Fox News quoted Rev. Philip Seeton as telling the website.

“There are people in the parish who don’t like it and have stayed,” he said.

Some parishioners say that they have a problem with what appears to be a large penis covering Jesus’ abdominal area.

But that portion, Seeton told the website, is meant to be Jesus’ abdomen “showing distension” — and not a penis.

“I’ve had people who have vocally said that that’s what they see there,” Seeton said.

“I’ve had people who have been just as vocal who said that’s not what they’re seeing there,” he added.

Calls to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Warr Acres, Okla., were not immediately returned.

A local artist who designed the crucifix had no comment. (ANI)

Korean man marries giant-sized pillow!

Melbourne, March 16 (ANI): A man in South Korea has married his pillow with the image of television vixen Fate Testarossa on it.

Lee Jin-gyu had purchased his ”dakimakura,” a huge body pillow, from Japan.

He has married his pillow with the help of a local priest in Japan.

Apparently, he was dating the pillow for six years.

“They go out to the park or the funfair, where it will go on all the rides with him,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Jin-gyu’s pal as saying.

The friend added: “Then when he goes out to eat, he takes it with him and it gets its own seat and its own meal.”

The pillow was outfitted with its own custom wedding dress during the wedding.

However, Lee had earlier expressed doubts over going through with the marriage.

He said: “My love for Fate is unchangeable, but I will take more time to think about our marriage.” (ANI)

Planck spacecraft obtains first peek of big bang’s ‘afterglow’

London, September 18 (ANI): European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Planck spacecraft has obtained its first peek at the afterglow of the big bang, revealing it in unprecedented detail.

The ESA spacecraft was launched into space on May 14 this year. It is observing the glow of hot gas from just 380,000 years after the big bang, called the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

According to a report in New Scientist, the detailed properties of this background may contain hints of hidden extra dimensions or multiple universes, as well as providing clues to what caused a brief, early period of incredibly rapid cosmic expansion.

Planck began surveying the microwave background on August 13, a few weeks after reaching its planned perch 1.5 million kilometres from Earth at a point called L2 and cooling its detectors to within 0.1 degrees Celsius above absolute zero.

Now, the Planck team has released the probe’s first image, an observational strip covering about 5 per cent of the sky.

Slight variations in temperature from place to place in the early universe give the image its mottled appearance.

“With a few per cent of the data in, you can see it’s working well and delivering good stuff,” said team member George Efstathiou of the University of Cambridge.

Planck is expected to provide the most detailed all-sky map of the cosmic microwave background yet, improving on the best current map, obtained by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), which launched in 2001.

Planck’s detectors have more than 10 times the sensitivity of WMAP’s, and about 2.5 times the angular resolution.

“Every strip that Planck scans, we’re getting data that is many, many times more sensitive than WMAP,” Efstathiou told New Scientist.

Although Planck was only designed to observe the sky for 15 months, the team believes it could last for more than 30 months, based on new estimates of how long its coolant will last.

The extra time will allow Planck to measure the radiation with even greater precision, since it will scan the entire sky four times – two more than originally planned. (ANI)

Archaeologists discover gemstone carrying portrait of Alexander the Great

Washington, September 16 (ANI): An archaeological team, during excavations in Israel, has discovered a gemstone that has a portrait of Alexander the Great engraved on it.

The excavations at Tel Dor were carried out by an archaeological team, which was directed by Dr. Ayelet Gilboa of the University of Haifa and Dr. Ilan Sharon of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

“Despite its miniature dimensions – the stone is less than a centimeter high and its width is less than half a centimeter – the engraver was able to depict the bust of Alexander on the gem without omitting any of the ruler’s characteristics,” said Dr. Gilboa, Chair of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Haifa.

“The emperor is portrayed as young and forceful, with a strong chin, straight nose and long curly hair held in place by a diadem,” he added.

The Tel Dor researchers have noted that it is surprising that a work of art such as this would be found in Israel, on the periphery of the Hellenistic world.

“It is generally assumed that the master artists – such as the one who engraved the image of Alexander on this particular gemstone – were mainly employed by the leading Hellenistic courts in the capital cities, such as those in Alexandria in Egypt and Seleucia in Syria,” according to the researchers.

“This new discovery is evidence that local elites in secondary centers, such as Tel Dor, appreciated superior objects of art and could afford ownership of such items,” they added.

The significance of the discovery at Dor is in the gemstone being uncovered in an orderly excavation, in a proper context of the Hellenistic period.

This tiny gem was unearthed by a volunteer during excavation of a public structure from the Hellenistic period in the south of Tel Dor, excavated by a team from the University of Washington at Seattle headed by Prof. Sarah Stroup.

Dr. Jessica Nitschke, professor of classical archaeology at Georgetown University in Washington DC, identified the engraved motif as a bust of Alexander the Great.

This has been confirmed by Prof. Andrew Stewart of the University of California at Berkeley, an expert on images of Alexander and author of a book on this topic.

Alexander was probably the first Greek to commission artists to depict his image – as part of a personality cult that was transformed into a propaganda tool. (ANI)

Men worry more about mates’ beliefs rather than partners’ when it comes to size of penis

Melbourne, September 16 (ANI): An Australian study suggests that men seem to be more concerned about what their mates think rather than their partners, when it comes to the stature and size of their penis.

Annabel Chan, a PhD student at Melbourne’s Victoria University who obtained penis measurements from more than 500 men worldwide, describes this phenomenon as the “locker room syndrome”.

She has revealed that the men also answered questions designed to probe the link between penis size, male body image and mental health.

“It’s the locker room syndrome,” the Courier Mail quoted her as saying.

“That’s when they feel they should be bigger whereas when they are on their own they are actually quite happy with themselves,” she added.

During the study, the researchers asked the men, aged 18 to 76, to indicate their ideal body size, and compare that to what they believed other men would nominate.

About 65 per cent of the participants said that their ideal male body size would be smaller than the ideal size suggested by others.

The men were also asked whether they believed they would be a better sexual partner if they had a bigger penis.

Chan said: “(The men were) more concerned about how their overall body-size compared to the perceived male ideal than they are about how their size might impact on their sexual relations.”

The online survey asked men to measure their erect penises.

Chan said that she expected to receive some overstated measurements, but the self-reported data fell within the normal range of about 10 to 15cm.

“I thought people would report themselves as being very big, but they have been quite average,” she said.

The study showed that men with larger than average penises also reported higher levels of self-esteem, better general health and higher overall body satisfaction.

It further revealed that men who were happy with the size of their penis were also less likely to have used an online dating service, or to have used Viagra.

Overweight men had lower self-esteem, higher body dissatisfaction and greater use of the Internet for socialising, said the researchers.

“We have relatively little data about the body image of men because most of the research in this area concentrates on women,” Chan said.

“It means men don’t really get much help in terms of therapy, and options out there to get help,” she added. (ANI)

Putin hands over 5500 dollar Swiss watch to cheeky Russian factory worker

Moscow, Sep.16 (ANI): Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin handed over a 5000 dollar Swiss watch to a weapons manufacturing factory worker in Tula.

According to The Telegraph, the metalworker put Putin in a spot after he gave a speech on the economy in the town of Tula.

“Vladimir Vladimirovich, maybe you’ll give me something to remember you by?” Viktor Zagaevsky asked.

A bemused-looking Putin gestured he had nothing to give before jokingly asking what the worker wanted. “Maybe your watch,” the worker shot back.

After a short pause, Putin handed the watch over, leaving those present stunned.

The watch, made by Swiss company Blancpain, sells for around 5,500 pounds, what an average Russian earns in a year.

Putin’s love of chunky Swiss watches matches his macho action man image that goes down so well with Russian voters. He famously wears his watch on his right hand, a quirk that prominent members of his United Russia party have mimicked to show their loyalty.

The most expensive watch Putin has been spotted wearing is a model by Swiss firm Patek Philippe that sells for about 35,000 pounds.

Last month, he “spontaneously” took a watch from his wrist and gave it to an impoverished shepherd’s son in Siberia in a choreographed Kremlin propaganda exercise. (ANI)

Racist attacks have damaged Victoria and Australia’s image in India: Premier Brumby

Melbourne, Sep.16 (ANI): Victorian Premier John Brumby said on Wednesday that the spate of racist attacks had damaged Victoria and Australia’s image in India.

“Some of the events of the past few months have damaged our brand and the Australian brand in India and I can only repeat that overall we remain one of the safest places in the world,” The Age quoted Brumby, as saying.

Brumby, however, refused to comment about the weekend attack on four persons, but added that any violence, racially motivated or not, was unacceptable.

“If you look at Victoria as a whole we remain the safest state in Australia in terms of our crime rate,” he said.

“Any violence which does occur and any violence which is racially motivated is completely unacceptable … and I’ll keep repeating this message as long as I have to to get the message out there,” he added.

The premier is due to visit India next week as a part of a series of visits by high-profile politicians to try and curb fears that Australia is not a safe place for international students.

He said he would meet with key Indian officials to discuss the issue and also with students to encourage them to continue to come to Victoria and study. (ANI)

Osama declares decades of war on ‘powerless’ Obama

Islamabad, Sep 14 (ANI): Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has said that US President Barack Obama is “powerless” to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a transcript of a tape released by the terrorist organization’s media wing.

Al Qaeda’s As-Sahab Media released a video featuring a still image of Osama and audio statement entitled “A statement to the American people,” said the organisation IntelCenter.

SITE Intelligence Group, a terrorist-monitoring firm that translated the address, says Osama blames the wars on the “pro-Israel lobby” and corporate interests.

IntelCenter, another company that monitors terrorist propaganda, reports that the 11-minute video is an address to the American people, two days after the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The group described the release as an address to the American public. Osama usually releases a statement around September or October each year, The Times reports.

In his last previous known message in June, Osama said US President Barack Obama had planted the seeds of “revenge and hatred” towards the United States in the Muslim world and warned of decades of conflict to come.

That audiotape aired on Qatar’s Al-Jazeera news channel less than an hour after Obama landed in Saudi Arabia.

Obama “has followed the steps of his predecessor in antagonizing Muslims… and laying the foundation for long wars,” Osama said in the June release, referring to deadly clashes in Pakistan between the US-backed government and Islamist militants.

“He gave his orders to (Pakistani President Asif Ali) Zardari and his army to prevent the people of Swat from applying Sharia (Islamic) law,” he said.

“Obama and his administration have sowed new seeds of hatred against America. Let the American people prepare to harvest the crops of what the leaders of the White House plant in the next years and decades,” said the Al-Qaeda leader. (ANI)

Machines can’t recognise images like humans as yet

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): Computers might have reached a point where they can replicate many aspects of human behaviour, but still they cannot recognize distorted images like humans do, says a team of Penn State researchers.

James Z. Wang, along with Ritendra Datta and Jia Li at Penn State, explored the difference in human and machine recognition of visual concepts under various image distortions.

“Our goal is to seek a better understanding of the fundamental differences between humans and machines and utilize this in developing automated methods for distinguishing humans and robotic programs,” said Wang.

The researchers used those differences to design image-based CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart), visual devices used to prevent automated network attacks.

Many e-commerce web sites use CAPTCHAs, which are randomly generated sets of words that a user types in a box provided in order to complete a registration or purchasing process. This is done to verify that the user is human and not a robotic program.

In the study, a demonstration program with an image-based CAPTCHA called IMAGINATION was presented on imagination.alipr.com.

Both humans and robotic programs were observed using the CAPTCHA.

While the scope of the human users was limited, the results of the study proved that robotic programs were not able to recognize distorted images.

In other words, a computer recognition program had to rely on an accurate picture, while humans were able to tell what the picture was even though it was distorted.

Wang said that he is hoping to work with developers in the future to make IMAGINATION a CAPTCHA program that Web sites can use to strengthen the prevention of automated network attacks.

Although machine recognizability does not exceed human recognizability at this time, Wang is optimistic that it would be possible in the future.

“We are seeing more intelligently designed computer programs that can harness a large volume of online data, much more than a typical human can experience in a lifetime, for knowledge generation and automatic recognition. If certain obstacles, which many believe to be insurmountable, such as scalability and image representation, can be overcome, it is possible that one day machine recognizability can reach that of humans,” said Wang.

The study has been presented in the latest issue of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. (ANI)

Gorilla-like creature resembling ‘Bigfoot’ photographed in Kentucky backyard

London, September 10 (ANI): A gorilla-like creature that resembles the mythical creature ‘Bigfoot’ is causing excitement on the web after being photographed in the back garden of a home in Kentucky in the US.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the large, hairy beast can be seen in a blurry picture taken on an automatic camera set up by an amateur hunter.

While flicking through images of rabbits and deer, Kenny Mahoney noticed a dark, humanoid creature that does not look like any of the southern US state’s known native species.

The mystery animal’s head appears too small for it to be a bear, leaving Mahoney wondering whether he had accidentally captured one of the clearest ever photos of Bigfoot.

“It looked like it had the outline of a head, and like gorilla type shoulders, and then the arms crossed is what it looks like to me,” said Mahoney.

“One of the explanations my brother-in-law said it may be a garbage bag blowed up in there, but all the smashed over vegetation in there – I really don’t know. I have no idea what it is,” he added.

Mahoney said he is very doubtful that the creature in the photo is Bigfoot.

His wife Margaret has sent the image to a wildlife expert in the hope of getting it identified.

The mythical ape-like creature Bigfoot is most regularly sighted in the forests in the northwestern states and provinces of North America, although last month a teenage girl in Poland reported seeing a similar beast.

Last year, two men in the US state of Georgia claimed to have discovered a body of Bigfoot, but subsequently confessed that photos they produced as “proof” of their find actually showed a rubber ape costume. (ANI)

VHP leader accuses Advani of using Ayodhya issue for personal gains

New Delhi, Sep. 9 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal on Wednesday accused BJP leader LK Advani of taking out the Rath Yatra for personal political gain.

Advani, he said, should now think about stepping down from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He also noted that the BJP had deviated from its founding policies and that is the reason for its apparent ‘sinking’.

Singhal’s statements coincide with the times when the saffron party is facing rough weather and controversies have become an order of the day.

The no-show in Lok Sabha polls, revelation on Advani’s lie on the Kandhar episode, Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his subsequent expulsion from the party are the several episodes which hit the party’s image badly. (ANI)

MJ set to become world’s top earning celebrity

London, September 7 (ANI): Michael Jackson has been predicted to become the world’s top earning celebrity next year.

The late King of Pop’s estate is expected to amass up to 150 million pounds from beyond the grave, thanks to merchandising contracts, album sales, and other royalties.

The top 1,000 licensing and merchandising experts across Europe, participating in the Brand Licensing trade event in London, made the predictions.

“Michael Jackson’s image and legacy is licensed on anything from coins and clothes, to coffee table books and singing, stuffed animals,” the Daily Express quoted Ciaran Coyle, The Beanstalk Group chief, as saying.

Other high profilers to feature among the top 20 stars, dead or alive, include Elvis Presley, Heath Ledger and Jade Goody. (ANI)

Malaysian Indian Congress Youth demands apology on ‘cow head’ issue statement

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): The Malaysian Indian Congress Youth has asked Selangor Mentri Besar Dr Mohammad Khir Toyo to apologize for his comments on the “cow head” incident, which, they said, has hurt Hindu sentiments.

“He must immediately retract his statement and issue a public apology,” The Star Online quoted MIC leader S. Subramaniam, as saying.

Subramaniam expressed shock at Toy’s statement that he was “not a religion-conscious person.”

Subramaniam warned Toy that his comments could further damage Barisan Nasional’s image.

Subramaniam, accompanied by several supporters, also lodged a police report on the matter at the Sentul police station. police spokesman confirmed receiving both police reports. (ANI)
