Government to get tough with petroleum strike

New Delhi, Jan 9 (ANI): The Government today said that it would deploy central forces to ensure that supply lines are not dried due to the ongoing strike.

The government also asked the striking PSU executives to withdraw their strike. They have struck work nationwide since Wednesday, demanding hike in their pay and perquisites.

The matter was discussed in the cabinet meeting where the situation rising following the strike was reviewed.

Petroleum Secretary R S Pandey told reporters the Government would deploy central forces wherever necessary. The striking employees cannot hold the country to ransom.

He added that 40 per cent BPCL employees have resumed work.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and briefed him about the matter.

Earlier, the meeting which took place between top officials of the oil companies and Deora in the early hours of morning was inconclusive as oil companies refused to step back on their demands.

“The talks have been inconclusive. The talks are going to take place further as well. There is no assurance. Only discussions are going on,” said Amit Kumar, President, Oil Sector Officers” Association.

As the strike entered its third day, its effects began to show in the serpentine queues at the petrol pumps across New Delhi.

Petrol pumps ran dry as frenzied people thronged the petrol pumps to get their vehicles filled.

”Dry Day” read the headline of one of the leading dailies, while photographs of petrol pumps showing signs of ”No Supply” and ”Out of Stock” flashed across the others.

For Delhiites, it was a nightmare as they stood outside the petrol pumps since wee hours of the morning.

“I”m coming from the airport, and was unable to get petrol anywhere on the way. I”ve been trying to get fuel since yesterday night,” said Pankaj Choudhary, a commuter.

The news of the strike continuing had created panic amongst the people since Thursday. Those who could not get fuel on Thursday, stood in queues since early hours on Friday to get their vehicles filled.

“I was in queue since seven in the evening and was able to get diesel worth only 200 rupees. My home is around 80 kilometers away from here and the fuel will not hold out for long. Now today again, I”m in queue since six in the morning, but I am still waiting for my turn,” said Rajan Singh, another commuter.

There were others also for whom the long wait at the petrol pumps proved quite nightmarish.

“My younger brother”s wife is very ill and we have to take her to hospital. It is an emergency, but instead we are standing here in queue for petrol,” said Jeevanlal, a resident.

About two-third of the 425 petrol pumps in New Delhi did not open because of lack of stocks and the few who did soon ran dry.

State-run firms dominate the country”s energy sector, controlling almost the entire supply of transport fuels, natural gas and domestic crude oil. (ANI)

Experts don’t buy Pitt”s defence of not cheating on Aniston for Jolie

New York, Jan 8 (ANI): Experts say that having emotional feelings for someone is the start of an affair, but actor Brad Pitt, who was married to actress Jennifer Aniston when he shot ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ with actress Angelina Jolie, has denied that he cheated on her.

Pitt, 45, has once again rebuffed allegations that he started his affair with Jolie on the set of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ while he was still married to Aniston, and says that he was still filming the movie when he split up with her.

“What people don”t understand is that we filmed for a year. We were still filming after Jen and I split up,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying in the February issue of W magazine.

“Even then it doesn”t mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn”t,” he added.

But experts have pointed out that an affair is not just about sex, but also about emotions.

“An emotional affair is an affair. If you find yourself having feelings for someone, that is the beginning of an affair,” Rachel Sussman, a New York-based marriage and family therapist, said.

So whether Pitt and Jolie consummated their relationship while he was still married to Aniston is irrelevant, she says.

Both Jolie and Pitt have denied that they began dating during his marriage and Pitt now says that his early relationship with Jolie was “respectful” of his marriage with Aniston.

But Pitt”s definition of what”s “respectful” might differ from his ex-wife”s.

“Men do tend to walk around feeling that unless I”m having sex, I”m not doing anything wrong,” M. Gary Neuman, psychotherapist and author of “The Truth About Cheating: Why Men Stray and What You Can Do to Prevent It,” said.

“Women can be uncomfortable with the husband talking about how many lunches he”s had with an associate. There is a difference of perspective,” he said.

Adding that extramarital sex “is only painful because it says how far the emotional affair went.”

Both Sussman and Neuman agree that spouses can avoid becoming too close to a member of the opposite sex. (ANI)

He insists that he doesn”t want to take on the challenge of Shakespeare or other legendary playwrights.

“Not that I don”t think that doing the classics is a wonderful idea, but Shakespeare”s got too many lines and the other stuff is really complicated,” he added. (ANI)

“I started making fun of it around my friends and family and also to let everyone know it was okay to be struggling with it, as well,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling USA Today newspaper.

“If I can find humour in it, that means I”m going to be okay. If something happens to me that I can”t laugh about, look out, there goes my soul.

“As horrible as what I went through was, it”s not the worst thing that could happen to a person. In the history of humanity, it doesn”t even come close.

“But I was talking to someone the other day and said, ”There”ve been a lot of lessons, maybe not quite enough life”,” she added. (ANI)

Ian Halperin offers to pay for Jacko’s medical tests

London, Jan 7 (ANI): Self-styled investigative journalist Ian Halperin is so set on finding out if Michael Jackson is dying from a lung disease that he has offered to pay for the singer to undergo medical tests.

Halperin, who is producing a new book on Jackson’s life, insists that the Thriller star is suffering from the deadly lung condition Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

When Jackson”s publicist denied the claims of his illness last month by calling them “a total fabrication”, the author offered to fund for a medical examination to get to the truth.

Haydos’s career in balance as selectors meet

Sydney, Jan.7 (ANI): Australia’s cricket selectors are likely to give opening batsman Mathew Hayden a tap on the shoulder, saying that probably his stint in international cricket is over after over 15 years of yeoman service.

The Daily Telegraph says that Hayden is tipped to be axed from Australia”s one-day and Twenty20 squads today, and this could be the final straw.

Though the struggling batting veteran has given no clear signal about his retirment plans, his former batting partner Michael Slater believes he has had a horror summer of just 149 runs at 16.55 from five Tests, and that it was time to celebrate his glorious 103-Test career.

“The selectors” hands will be shown by what they do with the one-day squad. If he is to be dropped it is the cycle of the game. He”s had a fabulous career and I think there”s a lot to celebrate. If there is a change to be made, let”s make it, if that”s the way they feel. All I”m sensing from him is that he wants to keep playing. I don”t think the selectors and Ricky are ready to let him go,” the paper quoted Slater, as saying.

Bowled for 39, Hayden gave a couple of bat waves to the cheering crowd but there was no grand flourish to suggest he may never be seen again.

Wife Kellie looked near tears as she stood and applauded – perhaps an indication she knew something the rest of the cricket world was waiting to hear.

Mike Hussey last night declared he would be stunned if Hayden retired and claimed he did not sense anything different in the SCG dressing room.

“He (Hayden) hasn”t said anything to us. From what I see from inside the camp he is still very hungry to score runs. I”m not seeing any signs that he wants to call it a day. Today he was pretty calm, he put his gear down and he didn”t say too much,” said Hussey.

Former Australian great Doug Walters claiming the opener should get his wish to play on to a swan song Ashes campaign.

“We do need some experienced players to continue on for a little while, particularly for the Ashes tour, and I would like to see him still be there,” Walters said.

“I”d like to see Matty go out on his own will, not go out on the selectors” axing block.
“Matty knows better than I do when his time will be up. If it is up, I say congratulations. If it”s not, I wish him every success,” Walters added.

However, Walters also endorsed boom 20-year-old NSW batsman Phillip Hughes as Hayden”s potential replacement.

“Phillip Hughes is a young guy, keen and got a big future ahead of him. He would be my first choice,” Walters said.

Pace bowling great Glenn McGrath claimed Australia needed Hayden to play on for his aura in a time of transitional change, while Shane Warne also backed him to bat on.
Former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy believes national selectors want Hayden for the Ashes. But he also wonders how much gas Hayden had left in the tank.

Slater feels that Hughes, at 20, is in the same position as players such as Hayden, Justin Langer, Damien Marytn, Ricky Ponting and himself, who were all given chances in their early 20s. (ANI)
