About Green Revolution | Green Revolution

Green Revolution usually refers to the transformation of agriculture that began in 1945. One significant factor in this revolution was the Mexican government’s request to establish an agricultural research station to develop more varieties of wheat that could be used to feed the rapidly growing population of the country.

In 1943, Mexico imported half its wheat, but by 1956, the Green Revolution had made Mexico self-sufficient; by 1964, Mexico exported half a million tons of wheat. The associated transformation has continued as the result of programs of agricultural research, extension, and infrastructural development. These programs were instigated and largely funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, along with the Ford Foundation and among other major agencies.

Many agronomists state that the Green Revolution has allowed food production to keep pace with worldwide population growth while others state that it caused the great population increases seen today. The Green Revolution has had major social and ecological impacts, making it a popular topic of study among sociologists.

The term “Green Revolution” was first used in 1968 by former USAID director William Gaud, who noted the spread of the new technologies and said,

These and other developments in the field of agriculture contain the makings of a new revolution. It is not a violent Red Revolution like that of the Soviets, nor is it a White Revolution like that of the Shah of Iran. I call it the Green Revolution.”

Washington, July 9 (IANS) Indra Nooyi, the India born CEO of beverage giant Pepsico, is ranked fourth among 15 Fortune 500 Women CEOs who “show what it takes to lead some of the America’s biggest companies” from health care, to food, to retail, to technology.
Since becoming CEO in 2006, Indra Nooyi, 53, who gets a compensation of $13.4 million has grown the company’s top line — revenue rose 10 percent in 2008 to $43.3 billion — and raised its profile in some goodwill-engendering arenas, Fortune noted.

Nooyi has pushed PepsiCo to target health-conscious and female consumers, resulting in such new products as Smartfood’s low-fat popcorn clusters, low-calorie Trop 50, and Starbucks Frappuccino Lite, it said.

While Pepsi was forced to cut 3,500 jobs and close six plants last year, Nooyi has announced big expansions abroad: $500 million in India, $1 billion in China, and $3 billion in Mexico.

PepsiCo will also spend $1.2 billion over the next three years to boost the sales of carbonated soft drinks — including brands such as Pepsi and Mountain Dew — in North America.

In the Fortune 500 list dominated by male CEOs, Patricia Woertz, who spent three decades working in the oil industry before joining Archer Daniels Midland and becoming the highest ranking woman CEO on the list, the US business magazine said.

G8 – G8 Countries – G8 summit – G8 summit opens in Italian earthquake-hit town – G8 Nations

L’Aquila (Italy), July 8 (DPA) The leaders of the world’s eight most powerful developed nations met in the Italian town of L’Aquila Wednesday for three days of talks on global issues such as climate change, trade and financial reform.

The presidents of the US, Russia and France, the prime ministers of Britain, Canada, Italy and Japan and the chancellor of Germany met in the mediaeval town three months after it was rocked by an earthquake, which killed almost 300 people.

The heads of the European Union’s executive body and rotating presidency were also present.

The G8 summit was set to be joined on Thursday by leaders from Brazil, India, South Africa and Mexico to discuss issues of trade, climate change and aid to farmers in the developing world.

China’s president had been set to attend, but was forced to fly home on the eve of the summit to deal with ethnic riots in the northwestern city of Urumqi.

The summit, hosted by Italy, which currently holds the G8’s rotating presidency, was originally planned for the Mediterranean island of La Maddalena, off Sardinia.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi decided to move it to L’Aquila as a sign of solidarity with earthquake victims.

Di’s letters to UK government ‘will be kept secret’

London, Feb 19 (ANI): The series of private letters between late Princess Diana and the British Government will be kept under wraps, the Information Commissioner has ruled.

The letters from the Princess of Wales to John Major, the former Prime Minister, and Tony Blair, his successor, were considered to be too private to be published under the Freedom of Information Act.

Royal Family members are exempt from the Freedom of Information legislation, however, individual cases can be challenged on public interest grounds, reports the Telegraph.

The Office of the Information Commissioner said the letters were of a “personal nature” and not related to government policy.

The princess died in 1997 when the car in which she was travelling crashed in a Paris tunnel.

The Cabinet Office published seven telegrams from the princess to prime ministers of the day thanking them for birthday wishes, but all further correspondence was withheld on the grounds that it fell inside the exemption.

A further review by the Cabinet Office upheld this decision to keep the correspondence secret, stating that the public interest in not releasing it “outweighed” any gained by making it freely available.

In a statement the ICO said: “It is important to draw a clear distinction between matters of public interest and matters about which the public may be merely curious.” (ANI)
