Australia regains number-one position in ODI Championship

Dubai, Sep 18 (ANI): Australia has regained top spot in the ICC ODI Championship after going 6-0 up with one match to play in the ODI series in England.
Ricky Ponting’s side beat the home team by 111 runs at Trent Bridge on Thursday and in the process has moved ahead of South Africa by a fraction of a ratings point.

Australia needs to win the one remaining ODI in the series to stay top and thus head into the ICC Champions Trophy as the number-one-ranked one-day side in the world.

An England win in the final ODI of the series would consign Australia back down to third place.
As a result of Australia’s rise, India drops to third position while England stays in seventh position, three ratings points behind New Zealand in sixth.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 gets underway in South Africa on 22 September and with just a single ratings point separating Australia in first position from India in third place, it looks like a rankings battle is on the cards over the next couple of weeks. (ANI)

India has a chance to be number one ODI team: ICC

Dubai, Sep.7 (ANI): India has a chance to claim the number one spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship when it turns out for the tri-nation series involving host Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

The series begins at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo from Tuesday.

India trails number-one ranked South Africa by just one rating point, but if it wins all the three matches (including the final), it will gain two ratings points which will put it in number one position for the first time since the rankings were introduced in October 2002.

However, if India loses one match in the tournament, it will stay on 126 ratings points while defeat in two matches will drop it to 123 ratings points.

There is plenty at stake for Sri Lanka and New Zealand as well in the forthcoming series.

Daniel Vettori’s side can narrow the gap with the third-placed side if it finishes unbeaten in the series as in this case it will rise to 119 ratings points. Kumar Sangakkara’s side will also gain six ratings points if it makes a clean sweep in front of its own supporters.

Sri Lanka has been a hard team to beat on its home turf. While India leads Sri Lanka 59-42 in head-to-head records, Sri Lanka has won 22 matches and lost 16 to India in the previous 42 encounters between the two sides in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has also dominated New Zealand when playing in its territory, having won 10 out of 16 matches with one no-result. Overall, New Zealand narrowly leads Sri Lanka 34-30.

Meanwhile, England has dropped two places to sixth after slumping to defeat in the opening two ODIs against Australia in London. Australia won the opener at The Oval by four runs and then doubled the lead at Lord’s where it won by 39 runs.

As such, Australia has climbed to 123 ratings points after gaining four ratings points while England has slipped from fourth to sixth place.

However, England can still move ahead of Australia if it wins the remaining five matches in the series. On the other side of the coin, if Australia maintains its winning spree and claims the series 7-0 it will jump to128 ratings points while England will slide to 101 ratings points.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and vice-captain Yuvraj Singh renew their battle for the number-one spot. At present, Dhoni leads Yuvraj but the rankings can be reversed if Dhoni struggles and Yuvraj shines with the bat.

Besides Dhoni and Yuvraj, India boasts two more batsmen inside the top 20. Little master Sachin Tendulkar occupies 12th position with a place in the top 10 well within his sights while opener Gautam Gambhir shares 17th spot with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor.

Sangakkara is the only Sri Lanka batsman inside the top 20, sitting just outside the top 10 in 11th position. Mahela Jayawardena is in 30th position while Tillekeratne Dilshan is 32nd.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Kulasekara is feeling the pressure from New Zealand duo of Kyle Mills and Daniel Vettori. With only 36 points separating Kulasekara from Vettori, a change at the top of the order looks inevitable.

Sri Lanka also has Muttiah Muralidaran inside the top 20 in fifth position while Ajantha Mendis is in 12th spot while 23rd placed Harbhajan Singh is the highest-ranked India bowler in the absence of 16th placed Zaheer Khan. Jacob Oram is the other bowler from the three sides to figure inside the top 20 in 17th spot.

Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh leads the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders. Oram is in third position while Yuvraj Singh is in fifth position, just five points behind. Sri Lanka’s highest-ranked all-rounder is Sanath Jayasuriya in 12th spot. (ANI)

Oz regains number one ODI spot from Proteas after Durban win

Dubai, Apr.4 (ANI): Australia has regained the number one spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship after defeating South Africa by 141 runs in the first ODI of the five-match series in Durban on Friday.

Australia, which surrendered its top position to the Proteas after stand-in captain Johan Botha inspired his side to 4-1 victory in Australia earlier this year, had started the series trailing Graeme Smith’s side by one ratings point. And such is the competitiveness at the top of the table that victory in the first ODI has given Australia a swing of three points as it now sits on 125 with South Africa on 123.

South Africa still has a chance to finish the series number one if it wins the series 3-2 or better. On the other hand, to return home with the number one tag, Australia needs to win the series 3-2 or better, while a 4-1 victory will put it on 127 ratings points and will drop South Africa to third position behind India on 121.

Meanwhile, England’s 3-2 victory over the West Indies has earned Andrew Strauss’ side one ratings point as it closes the gap with fifth-placed Pakistan to just three. The West Indies has stayed in eighth position on 92.

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has slipped five places to 13th position in the latest Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen. Pietersen scored 80 runs in four innings during the five-match series at an average of 20.00.

Pietersen’s fall has pushed other players up the rankings with Ricky Ponting of Australia, Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka and India’s Sachin Tendulkar gaining two places each in the latest rankings.

The batting chart is still headed by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni followed by Michael Hussey of Australia in second place and West Indies’ Chris Gayle in third.

Pietersen’s team-mate Stuart Broad is another player to lose ground in the latest rankings as he drops five places to 12th spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers.

Australia’s Mitchell Johnson gains three places to seventh position in the bowling rankings while James Hopes has moved up five places to 13th spot. Another bowler to make a significant move is South Africa vice-captain Johan Botha who gains three places and breaks into the top 10 on the highest rating of his career to date.

The leading bowler is still Nuwan Kulasekara of Sri Lanka, followed closely by Black Cap Kyle Mills, Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidaran and another New Zealander Daniel Vettori, who each gain one place as Australia’s Nathan Bracken slips up.

The top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders remain unchanged with Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh still leading the way from England’s Andrew Flintoff in second. (ANI)
