Google in sexism row after ‘censoring cougar dating site ads’

London, May 20 (ANI): Google has landed itself in trouble by censoring advertisements for a so-called ‘cougar’ dating websites for women despite taking no action against ads of similar sites for men.

The company labelled the ad for the website, called CougarLife, which promotes relationships between older women and younger men, as “non family safe”.

However it allows ads that publicise such liaisons between older men and younger women – from a website called ArrangementSeekers.com.

Both CougarLife and ArrangementSeeks are owned by the same company, Avid Life Media.

Google officials then refused to allow the advertisements for the Canadian-owned dating service, which introduced “women in their prime with younger men”, to be sent to third party websites.

A “cougar” is a slang term used for such women in the US and is epitomised by celebrities such as Demi Moore, whose husband, Ashton Kutcher, is 16 years her junior.

According to The Telegraph, the company said the campaign, which cost 100,000 US dollars a month, generated referrals that accounted for almost two thirds of its traffic.

Google’s decision to censor the ad only landed it in more trouble as critics began accusing it of hypocrisy and sexism.

Claudia Opdenkelder, who is the founder of the CougarLife, and whose partner is 14 years her junior, accused the search giant of sexism.

“It”s just wrong all around,” The Telegraph quoted her as telling The New York Times.

“It”s age and gender discrimination. It”s just about older, successful, independent, strong women who enjoy someone that”s younger.”

She added to Canada’s National Post, “It”s a huge double standard and I think women should just be appalled.

“We just want to be treated the same way as all the others, and the discrimination against the word ”cougar” makes it even worse.

“It makes us – cougar women – feel like dirty perverts.”

A Google spokeswoman denied all the accusations.

She said the company had a list of words, which trigger a review of the site and the ads before a decision is made but declined to say if the word “cougar” was one of them.

“It’s not just about the ad, it’s about the ad and the landing page of the site,” she said.

“Anything that’s considered non-family safe will not run on the Google content network at this point.” (ANI)

Brit woman jailed for kissing a man publicly slams Dubai ‘hypocrisy’

London, May 10 (ANI): A British woman, who was jailed for kissing a man in public in Dubai, has dubbed its strict decency laws as being full of “hypocrisy”.

Charlotte Adams was arrested with Ayman Najafi last November after a local woman complained they had been seen kissing on the mouth in a restaurant.

Adams, 26, from Mersea Island, Essex, and Najafi insisted they had given each other only a peck on the cheek but were sentenced to a month in prison by a Dubai court last month.

The estate agent served 23 days and was freed on May 7 and deported.

She spoke of her relief at being reunited with her family, including twin brother Christopher and sister Emma, 20.

“It is such a relief. I’ve thought of nothing else for the last few months,” the Scotsman quoted her as saying.

“I love Dubai and it makes me sad that I’ll never come back, although I think I’d struggle to ever feel free here again.

“The laws need to evolve to match the culture here. At the moment, it’s all just hypocrisy,” she stated.

She went on to say that hotels in Dubai regularly offer free alcohol, particularly to women, even though drinking in public is still officially illegal in the Gulf state.

“Everyone gets so drunk they forget where they are, particularly the Westerners, which is when their behaviour can become dangerous legally,” she added.

Najafi, a management consultant from north London who has lived in Dubai for 18 months, is said to be continuing his fight against the conviction after being backed by his employers. (ANI)

Italy’s Fini defiant after clash with Berlusconi

ROME, April 25 (Reuters) – Italian right-wing leader Gianfranco Fini showed no regrets on Sunday after clashing with ally and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, and said he would only respect party decisions that have been properly discussed.

Bonds

Fini and Berlusconi, joint founders of the ruling People of Freedom party, publicly crossed swords at a party congress on Thursday, when Fini accused his boss of stifling internal debate and giving too much power to the pro-autonomy Northern League.

Speaking in a television interview on Sunday, Fini said he was proud of having “torn the veil of hypocrisy” that gave a false impression of blanket internal party agreement.

Fini said he had no intention of heeding Berlusconi’s call for him to resign as speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, and he and his followers would “only respect party decisions that are discussed and motivated”.

The half-hour interview was Fini’s first public appearance since the clash which has dominated Italian media for the last three days and fuelled speculation about how long the centre-right government can last.

Berlusconi’s leadership “cannot and must not cancel out … the possibility of different opinions, sometimes of dissent,” he said.

Fini, viewed as a possible successor to the 73-year-old Berlusconi as prime minister, mixed his defiance with pledges of loyalty to the government, while rejecting the idea of early elections and denying he had any plans to form a separate party.

“Even talking about early elections is irresponsible,” he said, saying the fall of the government would expose Italy to “an enormous risk of ending up like Greece,” in reference to the Mediterranean country’s debt crisis.

“I have no intention of forming another party. I plan to continue discussing inside my own party about some political problems,” Fini said. (Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Facebook breast photo ‘hypocrisy’ criticised

Popular social networking site Facebook is being criticised for its decision to take down photographs of a breast-feeding baby and a topless grandmother.

Photographer Gemma-Rose Turnbull says she posted the images from her current exhibition on her Facebook fan page.

She says two were taken down by the site administrator, but others showing topless Sexpo workers, a wet T-shirt contestant and a breast enhancement were left up.

Ms Turnbull says the site’s no-nudity policy is being applied hypocritically.

“I’ve spent five years doing this project and it really has validated it for me that mainstream media says that young, sexualised breasts are okay and that breasts that fall outside those dimensions are not okay,” Ms Turnbull said.

“So we don’t want to see old breasts. We don’t want to see breasts being used to feed babies.

“While I have no problem with them taking down images, I respect their right to retain a no-nudity policy, I think that it’s very ironic that the only breasts that were taken down are the ones that fall again outside those mainstream media norms.”

The ABC has so far been unable to contact Facebook for comment.

‘Burka like a paper bag on head’ remark lands Brit MP in trouble

London, Mar.24 (ANI): A Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) has invited trouble by abusing the ‘burka’, as a probe has been ordered against him for inciting racial hatred.

During a parliamentary debate last month, Philip Hollobone had urged the House of Commons to ‘seriously consider’ banning the garment, which is often used by Muslim women.

“Wearing a burka was like going round with a paper bag over your head,” Hollobone had reportedly said on the floor of the house.

Meanwhile, Hollobone has criticised the Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council (NREC) for complaining against him.

He blasted NREC for challenging the freedom of speech while attempting to have him prosecuted.

“It”s complete hypocrisy. They talk on one hand about freedom of speech and expression and then without even making contact try to get me prosecuted. In this country you should be able to have a debate about controversial subjects without the threat of police action. That”s how democracy works,” The Sun quoted Hollobone, as saying.

It may be noted that NREC had sent letter to the MP criticising his stance on Muslim women who choose to wear the burka in public.

Speaking during a debate on the occasion of International Women”s Day (March 11) last week, Hollobone had insisted that wearing a burka was not in accordance with the country’s culture.

“This is Britain. We are not a Muslim country. Covering your face in public is strange and to many people both intimidating and offensive,” Hollobone had said.

According to an estimate, burkas are worn by about 100,000 of the 2.4million Muslims living in Britain. (ANI)

Robin Williams’ nude scene in World’s Greatest Dad shocks daughter

Washington, Sept 18 (ANI): Actor Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda was left embarrassed after seeing her father nude in his new movie ‘World’s Greatest Dad’.

The comedian plays teacher Lance Clayton, who turns his life around after suffering a terrible family tragedy.

In the film, Williams’ character suffers a mini-breakdown and strips off for a plunge into a school swimming pool.

“Actually it (the nude idea) was mine. I thought, ‘It’s at the end of the movie, where this guy is having a catharsis… he’s getting rid of everything, why not go (nude),” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“I dive into a pool and, coming up (to the surface), it’s almost like a rebirth. It’s a strange thing and, in a weird way, it worked,” he added.

However, Williams failed to warn her 20-year-old daughter about the scene, who was left stunned at the recent premiere of the film.

“My daughter was at the premiere. She came up and said, ‘Thanks for telling me, dad.’ She’s 20 now and she was like, ‘Thanks for giving me a heads up about the nude scene!’” he added.

Williams says he can understand how horrifying it must have been for her – because he’d react with horror if she ever stripped off for a film.

He said, “I think I’d be like, ‘Stop! Turn that off!’ That’s when hypocrisy comes up and goes, ‘Payback’s a b**ch!’” (ANI)

Custard thrower receives police caution

A climate change protester who hurled green custard at Lord Mandelson has been given a caution. Skip related content

Have your say: Environment

Scotland Yard said Leila Deen went to a central London police station and accepted the punishment “on the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service”.

The 29-year-old, a member of the Plane Stupid campaign group, covered the Business Secretary in green custard as he left a meeting in the capital last month.

Police originally said they would not investigate the matter but backtracked after former deputy prime minister John Prescott said it would be “totally unacceptable” to allow it to pass unchallenged.

Ms Deen said she did not regret her “harmless” actions after being cautioned for disorderly behaviour.

She said: “I have always been honest about throwing green slime over Mandelson to highlight the hypocrisy of this Government’s attitude to climate change and the third runway at Heathrow.”

And she added: “Despite the harmless and comic nature of my antics, the police informed me that throwing custard over an unelected government minister could be seen as a public order offence and have cautioned me accordingly.

“Climate change is the greatest threat we have ever faced through which millions will lose their lives and livelihoods.”

She criticised Lord Mandelson, describing him as one of a number of “political stooges” who were “pushing ahead” with the runway.

“They are trying to stop us doing what’s necessary to change our future,” she said. “I don’t regret taking action against this Government’s hypocrisy and am grateful that the country cheered me on for what I did.

“The movement to stop climate change is large and growing, and since our democratic system is crippled by people like Mandelson, we have no choice than to continue to use the noble tradition of direct action to effect the urgent change we need, and to call the Government to account.”

Self-immolation bid by SGPC men

NEW DELHI: Six members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee were detained on Friday for trying to immolate themselves in protest against
the CBI clean chit to Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 Sikh riot cases. “The six SGPC members were held on the premises of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib at Ashoka Road,” said an officer from the Parliament Street police station.

The SGPC members were extremely agitated after the CBI’s verdict on Thursday. “It is most unfortunate for Sikhs that Tytler has been given a clean chit by a central investigation agency when the country is led by a member of the community,” said Kuldeep Bhogal, one of those who organized the protest. He added: “The CBI’s act has further exposed the hypocrisy of the Congress.

Clean chit to Tytler exposes Cong hypocrisy: BJP

NEW DELHI: BJP on Thursday said the CBI’s clean chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case has “shaken the faith of the
common man” and “exposed the hypocrisy of Congress”.

“The news of Jagdish Tytler being given a clean chit is really shocking. It has shaken the faith of the common man in the judicial system on the one hand and CBI on the other,” senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

Thousands of innocent Sikhs were killed in the wake of former PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the system has not been able to give justice to the riot victims yet, he said.

“This entire episode has exposed the hypocrisy of Congress. While the prime minister has apologised and regretted the tragic anti-Sikh incidents of 1984, the party has been rewarding the very people who are suspected to have masterminded that,” BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said.

The whole episode has brought to light the “insensitivity” of the establishment led by UPA, Punj added.

The case against 65-year-old Tytler, the Congress candidate from northeast Delhi for the Lok Sabha polls, relates to an incident on November 1, 1984 when a mob torched a Delhi gurdwara, killing three persons.

Jade Goody’s family tell Jordan she’s not welcome at funeral

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Even though Jade Goody had forgiven Katie Price a.k.a. Jordan for criticising her public fight with cancer, the late British celebrity’s family members have not.

Jordan, 30, who had openly talked to the media when she was diagnosed with a cancerous growth on the finger in 2002, has been told that she is not welcome at the funeral.

The former glamour model has repeatedly stated that she would like to attend the ceremony on April 4 to pay her respects, but Goody’s family and friends have told her she is not welcome.

“While Jade may have forgiven her, a lot of her family haven’t. If she turns up she will not be allowed in,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Jordan had in September last year criticised Goody’s decision to make her illness public.

“I can’t believe she is paid for interviews on subjects that people are really traumatised by,” she had said.

After Goody announced that she was suffering from cervical cancer, many got their cervical smears done.

“A lot of people were offended by Jordan’s remarks, which showed unbelievable hypocrisy,” the source said.

“But Jade had got to the stage where she knew anger and hatred were empty emotions that would get her nowhere.

“She didn’t want to row and, although she was hurt, she didn’t retaliate,” the source added. (ANI)

Rhys Ifans wants marijuana to be legalized

Washington, Mar 18 (ANI): Hollywood actor Rhys Ifans has demanded that marijuana be legalized, as he considers it to be a “beneficial herb”.

The ‘Notting Hill’ actor, who is currently filming Mr. Nice, which is based on a tale of notorious British drug smuggler Howard Marks, insisted that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol.

“A lot of people like dope in Wales and Howard is its champion. The reason why he sold it is because he thinks, and I agree, that it’s a beneficial herb,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“I feel marijuana should be legalised. Not so that people get high all over the place, but so it can be controlled. Drugs have been legal longer than they have been illegal, and it’s just hypocrisy to be able to sell alcohol to children while marijuana is illegal,” he added. (ANI)

Obama’s ‘Hope’ portrait, icon of 2008 campaign, in legal suit

Washington, Mar 12 (ANI): President Barack Obama’s “Hope” portrait, which became an icon of his 2008 campaign, is now a symbol of copyright scuffles, artistic license and political dissent.

Shepard Fairey, the street artist who created the distinctive crimson and blue image using an original AP photo of Obama taken two years earlier, has been counter sued by the Associated Press.

The AP is answering a suit Fairey filed against the wire service in February, claiming the popular “Hope” posters, T-shirts and buttons, which generated a reported 400,000 dollars, were protected by “fair-use exception” to the law, which allows limited use of copyright materials for criticism or comment.

The AP accused the Los Angeles-based artist of “blatant copying” and hypocrisy, and is playing some arty hardball of its own, the Washington Times reported.

Fairey pleaded not guilty in a Boston district court on Wednesday to 39 counts of felony vandalism for “illegally posting” his artwork around the city.
he AP suit asserts Fairey misappropriated the photo without providing notice, credit or compensation.

The image – derived from a Google version of the original – retained “the heart and essence of the AP photo, including but not limited to its patriotic theme,” the court documents said. (ANI)

Nawaz vows to root out ‘politics of hypocrisy, fraud’

Faisalabad, Mar. 7 (ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that he would not sit in rest until he roots out the “politics of hypocrisy and fraud”.

Addressing a public meeting here, Sharif said the real court of people was before him right there.

“The parliament should represent this parliament of people ‘that is here in front of me”, The News quoted Nawaz, as saying.

“We do not accept the Supreme Court of Islamabad,” he added.

The PML-N Chief said he could not see Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) getting weaker and invited the party workers to participate in his rally.

Nawaz Sharif pointed out that a whole year passed but no progress was made towards getting to the perpetrators of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

He accused former President Pervez Musharraf of violating the law and the constitution of the country.

“Musharraf tried to meet us when he visited Mecca and other places outside Pakistan but we never met him because he violated the law and the Constitution of our country”, he said.

“I faced a seven-year long exile but never joined hands with the violators of law and the Constitution,” he added.

Sharif said he was still ready for reconciliation, which would not be for ministries and personal interests but for the 160 million people of Pakistan.

“Reconciliation will only be for the restoration of judges and the future generations of the country,” he asserted.

He also warned them who damaged Bhutto’s monument.

“Those who damaged Benazir Bhutto’s monument cannot be members of Muslim League. We tried a lot to find these people but failed.

But we would find them and punish harshly,” he added. (ANI)
