Jagan defies Congress, to go ahead with ‘yatra’

Hyderabad, June 6 (IANS) Continuing to defy the Congress party leaders, former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Sunday said he would go ahead with his ‘Odarpur yatra’.

‘Who told you that yatra would not continue?’ he shot back when reporters in Anantapur sought to know if he has called off his yatra.

The Kadapa MP was asked to comment on reports that he decided to call off his controversial tour in different parts of Andhra Pradesh following a directive from the central leadership.

By repeatedly asking the same question to reporters, Jagan has virtually made it clear that he would go ahead with his yatra in Srikakulam district from June 8.

The yatra is aimed at consoling the family members of those who either committed suicide or died of shock following the death of his father, popularly known as YSR, in a helicopter crash last year.

Jagan’s attempt to defy the high command and take out the yatra in Warangal district of Telangana region on May 28 had triggered violence. The young MP was arrested on his way to Mahabubabad town in the district but firing by gunmen of his two loyal legislators in the town injured nine pro-Telangana activists, who were opposing his tour.

After the incidents, Jagan visited New Delhi and met some Congress leaders to convince them that there is no politics in his yatra. After a meeting with general secretary incharge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, M. Veerappa Moily, he had claimed that the leadership permitted him to continue the tour.

However, Moily later denied this and advised Jagan not to defy the high command. Jagan’s loyalists among the state ministers have also advised him not to go against the party’s directive. Last week, several legislators loyal to his father called on him and urged him not to take any hasty step.

Unhappy with Jagan’s attitude, the Congress leadership is not willing to allow him to undertake the yatra even in non-Telangana areas. Srikakulam is a part of north coastal Andhra and his yatra is not facing any opposition there.

Violence rocks Telangana

Hyderabad, May 28 — Congress MP Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested on Friday afternoon after his much-hyped Odarapu yatra (consoling tour) led to violence in Telangana districts including Andhra capital, Hyderabad, in which one person was reportedly killed and twelve injured. Jagan, who is the only son of former chief minister, the late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and an aspirant for the CM’s post, was taken into custody by a large team of policemen from the coach of the Intercity Express train at Vangapalli station in Nalgonda district and brought back to Hyderabad. Later, he was released on bail. The MP who defied the party high command directive and went ahead with the trip seems to have antagonised not only politicians of all hues in Telangana but even a large section within the Congress party. Some party MLAs including former minister R. Damodar Reddy have demanded that Jagan be expelled from the party. “He clearly violated the party discipline and it appears he has decided to fight with the high command,” Damodar said. “His stubborn attitude has led to the death of one Telangana activist and large-scale violence in Warangal.” Earlier in the day, the railway station at Mahbubabad, 200 km from Hyderabad in Hyderabad-Vijayawada trunk route, where Jagan was to arrive to a planned grand welcome, witnessed battles involving Telangana activists and his supporters. Shouting slogans of “Jaya Telangana” and “Jagan go back”, they pelted stones at the followers of Jagan, who retaliated in a similar manner. Two local MLAs, Konda Surekha and M. Kavitha, who were present to receive Jagan were not spared. The guards of the two legislators escorted them out while firing at the crowd, reportedly killing a student, Praful Raju (20).

However, Moily refused to comment on the issue, only saying it will be handled as a law and order problem by the state government.

Andhra government to rebuild collapsed temple tower

Hyderabad, May 27 (IANS) The ‘Rajagopuram’ towering entrance to the 15th century Srikalahasti temple in Chittoor district that collapsed Wednesday night will be rebuilt with the assistance of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah announced Thursday.

‘We will approach the Archaeological Survey of India to rebuild the Rajagopuram in a scientific manner,’ Rosaiah told reporters here.

Expressing his grief over the incident, he said an inquiry had already been ordered.

‘It is a matter which has to be looked into. I don’t have any ready made answers,’ he replied when asked if the negligence by the state’s endowments department had led to the collapse.

The government has formed a committee of experts to probe the reasons for the collapse of the ancient tower.

The temple’s 45-metre-tall Rajagopuram, which had recently developed cracks, caved in Wednesday night. Police said there was no loss of human life as all shops located near the structure had already been shifted. However, over 100 monkeys are feared dead in the incident.

The Rajagopuram was constructed in 1516 by Srikrishna Devaraya, the ruler of the Vijayanagara empire, to mark his visit to the temple as part of his march across the empire following his victory over his enemies.

On Tuesday, engineers, after an inspection of the seven-storeyed structure, had declared a 150-metre area around it as a danger zone. All shops in the area were then shifted, preventing a disaster.

Srikalahasti temple is among the most visited temples in Andhra Pradesh and is considered a must visit for anyone who visits the famed Tirupati temple.

The cracks had developed in the tower following recent rains. Rosaiah pointed out that few days ago, the government had approached Narasimha Rao, a professor of IIT Madras, to inspect the tower and recommend whether it could be repaired. However, the structure came crashing down even before he could inspect it.

India gets Super Series event

India edged out the existing Swiss Open to earn a prized spot on the badminton Super Series calendar, with the country winning the vote on Saturday 10-7. All the non-European nations voted in India’s favour.

India was included in the Super Series events for 2011-13 by the World Badminton Federation (WBF), with a proposed project purse of $5 lakh (Rs 2 crore). New Delhi’s Siri Fort stadium is tipped to host the premier event, with Mumbai and Hyderabad as stand-by venues.

Currently scheduled to occupy the slot vacated by the Swiss Open — immediately after the All-England Championship (which will be end-February, beginning March) — the Badminton Association of India is hoping to convince the world body to tag it along with the Singapore and Indonesia Super Series tournaments when the calendar is revised for 2011 onwards. “We’re hoping to get the September-October slot so that we can get a better field,” BAI joint secretary Punniah Choudhary said.

Proposals to upgrade the Syed Modi International to GP Gold and include another International Challenge in 2011 are pending.

Saina, Chetan top-seeds

Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand will be the top seeds for the India Open GP Gold event in Chennai starting June 8. In a hugely depleted draw, Malaysian Muhammad Hafiz Hashim is seeded second, with another six Indians seeded 3-8, while Nehwal will fancy her chances of winning the title with Malaysian Mew Choo Wong being the next highest challenger. India’s men’s doubles pair of Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar are seeded 2, while the mixed doubles pair of V Diju and Jwala Gutta are the top seeds.

Chennai cops bust drug-smuggling attempt at airport

Chennai, May 14 (ANI): Police in Chennai have busted a drug smuggling attempt after they apprehended an unemployed Indian man trying to smuggle the contraband in an ice-cream vending machine at Chennai airport. He was heading to Malaysia.

The alert Chennai police followed a tip-off that led to his apprehension. They got suspicious after they saw the man heaving a bulky package at the Chennai airport.

Authorities stopped the Malaysia bound man on Wednesday night. During interrogation, he confessed he was carrying narcotics.

It emerged that the package was an ice-cream vending machine in which 14.79 kg of ketamine had been hidden.

“The drug was skillfully concealed in a cavity in the ice cream dispenser which he was carrying, purportedly for sale abroad,” The Star quoted R. Periasamy, Commissioner of Customs (Airport and Air Cargo) as saying.

Customs officials estimated that the contraband, commonly known as a “party drug”, could easily fetch about RM1million in international market.

According to the report, ketamine hydrochloric, often used as animal tranquilliser, is easily available in India and widely trafficked to Southeast Asian cities, where there is a growing demand for the drug, and sold at lucrative prices.

Between 2008 and 2009, around 123kg of ketamine were seized at Chennai airport alone.

Due to stringent checks in the southern city airport and seaport, smugglers are now plying other Indian airports such as Cochin, Hyderabad and Coimbatore, Periasamy said. (ANI)

Sania denied visa for Sialkot, reception likely in Lahore

Karachi, Apr.1 (ANI): The Pakistan High Commission has denied tennis star Sania Mirza a visa for Sialkot, the home town of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik where a reception (Valima) was to be held after the couple’s marriage.

Sania has only got visa for Lahore and Karachi following which the reception is likely to be shifted to Lahore.

Sania and Shoaib will tie the knot on April 11 in Hyderabad while their wedding reception is slated to be held in Dubai on April 15, where the sports couple would be staying after marriage.

They are not the first ‘celebrity’ cross-border couple. Former Pakistan Test opener Mohsin Khan had married Bollywood actress Reena Roy in the 1980s, but the marriage didn’t last long.

Sania has also clarified that she was not making any political statement by marrying Malik. (ANI)

Political issues could be resolved through Sania, Shoaib type positive approach : Nawaz

Lahore, Mar.31 (ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said he is happy at the news of the wedding of Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, adding that political issues could also be resolved through a similar ‘positive approach’.

Malik and Mirza will tie the knot on April 11 in Hyderabad while their wedding reception is slated to be held in Dubai on April 15.

Earlier, Mirza confirmed the news about her marrying Malik, and said both will settle in Dubai after marriage.

The two famous sports personalities would be getting married at a time when ties between India and Pakistan are not so cordial following the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

They are not the first cross-border couple. Former Pakistan Test opener Mohsin Khan had married Bollywood actress Reena Roy in the 1980s, but the marriage didn’t last long.

Mirza has already clarified that she was not making any political statement by marrying Malik.

Addressing the media outside her house in Hyderabad, Sania said: “We are not getting married for making political statement. We are getting married, that is the only thing in my mind. It is as simple just like you people get married.”

“I’m very happy, my family is very happy with the occasion. The reception will be held on April 15. The venue has not been decided as yet. It is still weeks away, but I’m happy,” she added. (ANI)

Editors Guild condemns attack on Andhra Jyothi

New Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday condemned the attack on Telugu news channel ABN Andhra Jyothi, allegedly by members of Prajarajyam Party (PRP) led by cine star Chiranjeevi.

In a statement issued here, the Guild also demanded to bring the culprits to justice.

“The Editors Guild of India strongly condemns this attack and hopes that the police will ensure the culprits are brought to book,” the statement said.

On Monday, angered over a news story telecast by the news channel on Chiranjeevi, the PRP activists attacked the channel’s head office in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills area.

The Guild has also noted with dismay the attack on the news channel.

“Such attacks on news channels are deplorable and cannot be justified in any way,” the statement said.

The Guild also urged all political parties to stay away from attacking journalists and media houses.

“Political parties in Andhra Pradesh and across the country must stay away from attacking journalists and their offices,” the Guild said.

In the statement the Guild expressed concern over increasing attacks on news channels and newspapers across the country.

“In recent months, there have been several attacks on newspaper and channel offices across the country, each attack raising serious questions for our democracy,” the statement said.

“In a civil society, disagreements must be conveyed through peaceful, democratic means,” the statement added. (ANI)

All-party meet in Andhra to discuss Hyderabad as ‘free zone’

Hyderabad, March 17 (IANS) The Supreme Court’s refusal to review its order declaring Hyderabad a ‘free zone’ for recruitments in government jobs triggered a fresh row, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Wednesday calling an all-party meeting to decide future course of action.

Rosaiah told the state assembly that he had no objection to passing a resolution urging the central government to bring a constitutional amendment to set aside the Supreme Court order.

Amid strong protests by Telangana leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the chief minister called the meeting to discuss the issue.

‘Hyderabad is part of sixth zone and not a free zone,’ Rosaiah told the agitating members. He, however, said the issue was sensitive and could not be discussed in an open house.

In October last year, the Supreme Court had declared that Hyderabad was not a part of Telangana but a free zone as far as recruitments and postings in government were concerned.

The state government’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) challenging the order was dismissed by the Supreme Court Tuesday at the admission stage.

This would mean that people from all parts of the state would have equal rights in jobs, postings and promotions in Hyderabad. People of Telangana had so far been enjoying local area status here with 70 percent quota in government jobs all these years.

Hyderabad had remained part of zone VI, along with Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and Medak districts of Telangana.

Telangana, which comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad, was merged with then Andhra State in 1956 to form Andhra Pradesh. But the people of Telangana were given certain safeguards in appointments under the Gentlemen’s Agreement of 1956 and a subsequent Presidential Order and six point formula.

Following the October order of the Supreme Court, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) revived the movement for separate statehood for the region. The state witnessed massive protests for and against the demand.

The latest judgment came at a time when a five-member committee headed by Justice Srikrishna is looking into the issue of statehood for Telangana.

TRS leader Harish Rao said the court order would cover appointments to 18 departments, including the police. ‘This will badly affect the interests of Telangana people,’ he said.

Huge cache of Maoist arms seized in Andhra

Hyderabad, Mar 16 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday recovered a huge cache of arms in the state.

Based on the documents recovered from Maoist leader Kondala Reddy, police conducted raids in a house at Paidiparru village in West Godavari District, and recovered a large number of rocket launchers, unassembled rocket launchers, about 3,000 hand grenades and their spare parts, and other items.

“With the recovery of such a huge dump, a major disaster has been averted to general public, as well as to the armed forces, said R R Girish Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP), Andhra Pradesh.

Kumar said that Maoists use peaceful areas to store their arms and carry out extremist activities, and urged the public to be vigilant in their villages and towns.

“There is also information that Maoists, in order to prove their existence, want to commit some sensational offences. Some action teams are understand their movement in the state so with that point of view also, I would like the public to inform – wherever possible – activities of the Maoists, or any places of storage of these arms and ammunitions in their respective villages or towns,” said Kumar.

Maoist rebels on February 22 had offered a conditional 72-day ceasefire through media, and said that they are willing to talk to the government if it aborts Operation Green Hunt. (ANI)

Pakistan’s about-face in captain chaos

Former captains Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf had their international futures cast aside and then restored just as quickly after the Pakistan Cricket Board backtracked on its decision to ban the two players overnight.

On Wednesday, the PCB said the two “should not be part of the team in any format” following reports of in-fighting during the unsuccessful tour of Australia ending last month.

The decision prompted protesters in Hyderabad to burn bats in a brief demonstration but a few hours later the PCB clarified its position saying there was no timeframe on the bans imposed on the two.

“The PCB wishes to clarify that the recommendation of the committee is not a life ban on these cricketers,” the PCB’s second statement of the day said.

“There is no specified term in the recommendation for these two players. As and when the PCB deems appropriate, these players will be considered for selection for the national team.”

The official change of stance came hours after it announced Younis and Yousuf would no longer be considered for selection after an inquiry into Pakistan’s defeat in every match of their three-Test, five one-day and Twenty20 series in Australia.

Bad influence

The PCB handed out 12-month bans to Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved and fined Shahid Afridi and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal three million rupees ($35,000) and Umar Akmal two million.

“Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan’s… attitude has a trickledown effect which is a bad influence for the whole team (and they) should not be part of (the) national team in any format,” the PCB said in its earlier statement on Wednesday.

The initial decision by the PCB left new head coach Waqar Younis shocked and left to try and rebuild a side for the defence of their Twenty20 World Cup title in West Indies in April.

“I will be talking to the board about this and see what happens,” Younis told reporters from Australia.

The selectors are due to meet this week to announce the 15-member squad for the World Cup and the board will also announce a new captain.

While Yousuf and Younis were not named in the preliminary squad of 30 players for the event, Malik and Rana were.

“I want to know what I did wrong,” Rana said. “I will be consulting with my people before deciding any future line of action.”

The PCB said the six-member inquiry committee, headed by its chief operating officer Wasim Bari, had based its recommendations on information gathered during several hearings with the players and reports from the team management.

Full, comprehensive security for Commonwealth Games: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Sep 7 (ANI): Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram on Monday assured full and comprehensive security will be provided during the Commonwealth Games to be held in October 2010 in Delhi.

Speaking to a private news channel on the security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games, Chidambaram said the participating countries need not have any fear.

“I make this promise that the Commonwealth Games will be conducted under full and comprehensive security. Nobody need fear, no country need fear,” Chidambaram said.

The England shuttlers pulled out of the World badminton Championship (WBC) held in August at Hyderabad, fearing terror attack.

Noting that threat faced by political leaders should not be underestimated, Chidambaram said, “If a political leader faces a threat, he has to be provided security and I think the government is committed to provide security to every political leader who faces a threat.”

He also negated the reports published in a section of the media, that the security cover by the National Security Guard (NSG) provided to some of the politicians would be withdrawn. (ANI)
