Britain heads for hung Parliament

London, May 7 (DPA) Britain is set for a change of government as the opposition Conservatives emerged as the biggest party from Thursday’s general election, and the ruling Labour Party suffered major losses, according to exit polls.

Figures announced as polling stations closed late Thursday predicted a hung Parliament, in which neither of Britain’s two main parties would gain an overall majority.

Exit polls gave the Conservatives under David Cameron 307 seats, just nine short of an outright majority.

The Labour Party of Prime Minister Gordon Brown was projected at 255 seats, compared with 356 in the last general election in 2005.

The result, if confirmed, could leave Cameron seeking to lead a minority government or asking the Liberal Democrats for support.

As results are being counted through the night, if Labour does better than the exit polls suggest, a link-up between Labour and the Liberal Democrats could be possible.

The Liberal Democrats, despite a highly successful campaign, would gain 59 seats, according to the exit polls, remaining behind expectations before the vote.

The full results will be known early Friday.

Education showdown for new hung Parliament

The Tasmanian Opposition is looking to the Greens to support laws to roll back the Tasmania Tomorrow system for year 11 and 12 students.

The Liberals plan to table the bill during Tuesday’s first sitting of the new hung Parliament.

After a six month break from State Parliament the Liberals say they have drafted a bill to dismantle the Academy and Polytechnic and bring back the college system for years 11 and 12.

The Liberal Leader Will Hodgman says the new state Liberal MP Michael Ferguson is the architect of the bill.

“We would expect that the Greens will ascribe their support to it, consistent with their policy,” he said.

“The Education Minister Lin Thorp has ruled out rolling back Tasmania Tomorrow and starts consulting teachers about the problems on Tuesday.

“They are the people on the ground,” she said.

“They know what changes need to be made to make sure the system works effectively.”

The Greens support the roll-back and also want TAFE brought back.

US Fritzl Phillip Garrido had alienated his wife from her family

London, Sep 8 (ANI): It has emerged that American Fritzl, Phillip Garrido, had brainwashed his wife Nancy and also alienated her from her own family.

Nancy’s brother, Pete Bocanegra, claims that it has been nearly 30 years since he spoke to his sister, who along with Garrido, has been charged with kidnapping, raping and keeping Jaycee Lee Dugard captive for 18 years.

Bocanegra said that his 54-year-old sister had tried to contact him 2 years ago, but when he tried to call her back Garrido hung up on him.

“I guess he didn’t like her speaking to her family and now we know why,” the Mirror quoted Bocanegra of Denver, Colorado, as saying.

“This isn’t the Nancy we knew. I can’t believe this is what she is involved in,” he added.

The last time he saw Nancy was a year before she wed Garrido, who was serving time for another kidnap and rape. (ANI)

Blindfolded Britney’s ‘barely-there outfit’ at Californian gig

London, April 22 (ANI): Britney Spears left little to imagination as she sported a racy outfit during her Circus concert in California.

The blindfolded pop princess was seen flying through the air on two semi-naked male dancers as she hung blindfolded by high wires.

But it was her barely-there layers that were alleged to have grabbed more attention than her bold acrobatics, reports the Sun.

The singer had kicked off the West Coast leg of her tour with an erotically charged but energetically flat gig at the Los Angeles Staples Center on April 16.

The show was said to have involved less-than-subtle sexual innuendos, including quite the pole performance, a striptease, and plenty of pelvic thrusts and gyrations. (ANI)

Vietnam admits dam resettlement programmes inadequate

Hanoi – Vietnam’s efforts to resettle villagers displaced by the massive Son La hydroelectric project have been slow and inadequate, government officials said Thursday.

Most of the villagers displaced by the dam in the mountainous northern province of Son La belong to ethnic minorities. National Assembly member Ksor Phuoc, an ethnic Jarai who heads the assembly’s Committee on Nationalities and its Group for Resettlement and Supervision of the Son La Hydroelectric Plant, said those resettled felt insecure in their new homes.

In some resettlement areas, Phuoc said, displaced villagers have already arrived, but roads, power lines, and schools have yet to be built.

“In those places, children have to travel to schools far from their new homes,” Phuoc said.

Phuoc’s comments echoed a report delivered Tuesday to Vietnam’s National Assembly Standing Committee on the resettlement of people displaced by the dam.

The report said the process is behind schedule and likely to cause resentment among those resettled.

Authorities have so far moved 62 per cent of the 91,000 people who will be displaced by the dam’s holding reservoir. Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said Wednesday that resettlement had been held up by delays in awarding compensation to displaced households.

The government granted each displaced household between 50 million and 70 million Vietnamese dong (2,800 to 4,000 dollars) to build a new house. But Phuoc said the actual cost of the new houses was between 200 million and 300 million dong (11,500 to 17,000 dollars).

Phuoc said hundreds of households were still unsure how to earn a livelihood, two years after being resettled in their new locations.

Nguyen Thai Hung, Deputy Head of the Management Board for Displacement and Resettlement in the Muong Lay district of Son La province, said that besides infrastructure, the resettlement areas lacked good farmland.

“The fertile land is already allocated to local people before the displaced arrive,” Hung said. “Authorities can only allocate land in mountainous areas which are very difficult to farm.”

Hung said most of the resettled were used to growing lowland wet rice, and had to learn new methods for growing upland dry rice. He said they had received little help from agricultural experts in learning how to work the land they had been granted.

The Son La Dam is the largest ever built in Vietnam, with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts and an estimated cost of 2.5 billion dollars. It is scheduled for completion in 2015.

The dam has been controversial since it was first proposed, partly because of the resettlement issue and partly due to environmental concerns. The province of Son La is prone to earthquakes, and if the dam fails, it could flood the city of Hanoi.(dpa)

Katy Perry denies being ‘best pals’ with Rihanna

Washington, April 13 (ANI): Katy Perry has dismissed reports that she and Rihanna are ‘best friends’.

Reports suggested that the pair bonded following Rihanna’s alleged bust-up with Chris Brown in February (09), that reportedly left her battered and bruised.

However, ‘I Kissed a Girl’ singer insists she has only ‘hung out’ with her fellow pop sensation twice and press has jus exaggerated it.

“We’ve hung out a couple times…Of course I consider her a friend, but it’s not like ‘I’m there,’ making a big deal of it, because I feel weird about that type of stuff. Um, you know, we’re just buddies. We’ve had dinner, and that’s about it,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling MTV News.

Perry also said that she and Rihanna get on as they both understand what it’s like to be catapulted into the limelight.

“We’re friends and we’re both kind of on this crazy rollercoaster, and… it’s nice to have good girlfriends. I pride myself on having cool chicks in my life, and she’s a cool chick,” she added. (ANI)

Hong Kong serial prostitute robber jailed for six years

Hong Kong – A Hong Kong teenager who robbed seven prostitutes at knifepoint, in some cases after having had sex with them, was jailed for six years Thursday.

Li Ka-chun, 18, carried out a series of robberies in June 2008 in inner-city flats where the prostitutes worked by themselves.

He admitted seven robberies and was jailed at a hearing in Hong Kong’s High Court Thursday by judge Gareth Lugar-Mawson who told him his crimes were very serious.

The case comes just two months after a jobless Hong Kong man who repeatedly slept with prostitutes and then tied them up and robbed them was jailed for nine years.

Chong Kwonk-hung, 24, admitted stealing hundreds of dollars from four prostitutes he slept with between October 2006 and June last year.

Pressure groups representing sex workers have been calling for a change to a Hong Kong law which allows women to operate as prostitutes only if they work in a flat on their own.

In 2008, four prostitutes were murdered in the space of three days in their flats. A suspect was later arrested and charged with three of the killings. (dpa)

Obama’s inaugural parade includes 10,000 performers

Washington – Just as the million-strong crowd dissolved on the National Mall after President Barack Obama’s inaugural oath Tuesday, tens of thousands of others remained along Pennsylvania Avenue in hopes of catching a glimpse of the newly-minted leader in the parade.

Obama and First Lady Michelle, who wore a yellow sheath and matching coat that hung open despite subfreezing weather, boarded the new presidential limousine to lead the parade that carries them over the 2.5-kilometre-distance to their new home at the White House.

One of the first daughters – Malia, 10, or Sasha, 7, it wasn’t clear which one – waved through the dark bullet-proof glass at the cheering, flag-waving 100,000-strong crowd, TV footage showed.

The Obamas were to dismount at the White House to a special parade stand to watch the show go by on the chilly, sunny day.

The parade performers include 10,000 people from music groups, school and university bands, cultural groups and special military units.

A prototype of NASA’s new lunar rover, driven by astronauts in their space suits, was also to roll down Pennsylvania Avenue in the parade.

The Obamas will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, behind the bullet-proof, heated enclosure at the White House to watch the parade.

Later in the evening, the Obamas and Bidens are expected to attend the 10 official balls, which include a special one for the military and another new ball, called the Neighbourhood Ball, for the local region. (dpa)

Blackburn Rovers ease into FA Cup fourth round

Blackburn Rovers ease into FA Cup fourth round London – A second-half goal from Carlos Villanueva helped Blackburn Rovers reach the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win Monday at non-league Blyth Spartans.

The Chilean midfielder curled in a free kick 13 minutes into the second half to seal Blackburn’s place in the last 32 of the competition.

Rovers will now play at Sunderland in the fourth round.

“It was very comfortable until the last five to 10 minutes, but having not converted our chances they were bound to get a chance at some stage,” Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce said.

“It would have been disappointing had we not won this game. It was a wonderful goal from Carlos. We should have been a bit more clinical.”

Blackburn had the ball in the Blyth net in the first half when Blyth defender Andrew Leeson turned in Matt Derbyshire’s shot, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Rovers dominated possession and finally got their reward when Villaneuva curled in a fine free kick on 58 minutes.

Blyth’s Andrew Wright volleyed narrowly wide in the dying minutes, but Rovers hung on to advance to the fourth round.

Despite their defeat, Blyth manager Harry Dunn said he could not have asked for more from his team.

“I’m so proud of the players. This has been a really fantastic experience for us,” he said.

“The supporters were fantastic, we went a goal down, and the fans were even better. It was a great night for us.” (dpa)

Taylor wins record 14th Darts World Championship

London, Jan.5 (ANI): Phil Taylor broke his own record for a major final when producing a brilliant display to hammer Raymond van Barneveld 7-1 in the World Darts Championship to take his 14th world title in London last night.

Taylor had not won the title for three years, but the result was never in doubt as he racked up a brilliant three-dart average of 109.76 at Alexandra Palace, reports The Independent.

The 48-year-old, who took advantage of some poor finishing from Van Barneveld, has now won 12 of the 16 PDC championships.

A focused Taylor began impressively, taking the first leg against the throw on his way to claiming the first set.

Van Barneveld hung in to level twice in the next set, but Taylor was not to be denied as he moved to within two sets of another title.

That quickly became one as Van Barneveld again missed crucial chances.

The Dutchman forced a decider in the eighth set but it was delaying the inevitable as Taylor finished off the match in emphatic style. (ANI)
