Bhajji fined for breaking Chandigarh traffic rules with his Hummer

Chandigarh, Sep. 1 (ANI): Driving his dream Hummer landed Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in trouble on Tuesday, when he was fined by Chandigarh traffic police for using the vehicle without a valid number plate.

Singh had to pay a 3000-rupee fine for the offence, according to reports.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic), H S Doon, told reporters that this episode would promote better traffic sense among the general public.

The off-spinner became the latest Indian cricketer to buy the American SUV after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Harbhajan imported the car from England, which costs about 70 lakh rupees in India. After paying the duty, the cost of the vehicle has come to one crore rupees.

While Dhoni’s Hummer is silver in colour, Harbhajan has opted for a “Black Beauty”.

Harbhajan is also looking forward to shifting to a new home.

The house is under construction in the New Baradari area of the city. The plot was given by the state government for his outstanding performance in the 2001 home series against Australia.

However, he has no plans to sell off his ancestral home where he was brought up.

“It has memories of my late father Sardev Singh,” he said. (ANI)

500dlrs-an-hour Hummer ride is new birthday craze for Aussie kids

Melbourne, July 14 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that Aussie kids are now being given a special celebrity kind of birthday treat by their parents – a 500 dollars-an-hour Hummer ride.

According to Hummer hire companies across Sydney, there is a rising demand by parents looking to give their kids a birthday with a celebrity touch.

Clint Comelli, from Hummer Limousines Australia, which charges 500 dollars for an hour ride, said that the chance to party like a rock star was behind its new popularity.

“The Hummers with the big wheels and a lot of chrome are among our most popular,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“It’s most popular with boys between about 9 and 15 years but girls are starting to get in on it too, especially as we have a hot pink Hummer. With some parties, the kids arrange to do something else like bowling or going shopping.

“Otherwise we pick them up from home for an hour ride. We have a karaoke machine or they can plug their iPods in and have a disco-style party while inside.

“It’s been popular for school formals for a while, but more and more we are doing kids’ parties,” he added.

Wafa Elmol hired a Hummer for the birthday of her daughter Dallal, who described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime moment”.

“Even weeks after it, it was all we talked about,” Dallal said.

“We got picked up and about 15 girls were taken for an hour ride.It was a really fun experience,” she added. (ANI)

Call Spoofing – Swatting – Little Hacker – Genius kids use caller-ID spoofing to mess with 911 – Dry Ice Bomb – H1 Hummer  -  Telephone hacking – Swatting Calls to 911 numbers -Caller-ID Spoofing – Swatting Calls – Spoofing

July 2nd, 2009

Many have heard of “swatting” it is commonly associated with fairly harmless pranks.  However, it can go in different directions besides the harmless pranks.  There are perfectly innocent legitimate uses for swatting.  At the same time though, there are pranks that take things way too far.  One genius known as “Little Hacker” has been telephone hacking since he was 14.  Now 19, Mathew Weigman has been at this for a few years.  He’s a part of a full group of telephone hackers that met up on telephone party lines.

The issue isn’t so much that this group is swatting, it’s more that they are screwing with 911.  Which yes, that is entirely possible, but it is a touch more tricky.  This group is associated with over 60 different swatting calls to 911 numbers across the country.  They make their prank calls to 911, but use spoofing technology to make it appear as if the call is coming from their chosen victim’s house.  The appeal behind it being, that the person they’ve made it appear is calling is going to have several police standing at their door with weapons drawn.  As of now caller-ID spoofing is still legal for most of the US.  Lawmakers in New York and Louisiana are now trying to control the practice.  Whether it be best that new laws are created or old ones modified, making calls such as this to 911 is taking things way too far.  Of course hopefully they won’t cause issues for those that have legit reasons for making swatting calls.

GM says Pontiac not gone yet; gets another 2 billion dollars

Washington – Reports that General Motors might kill off its muscled Pontiac line – Firebird, Grand Prix and Bonneville – pushed GM to nix the idea on Friday, at least for now.

GM is already working to shake off Hummer, Saab and Saturn as part of its belt-tightening ahead of the crucial June 1 deadline, set by the government for the country’s largest car maker to attain viability.

GM received news this week that it would get another 2 billion dollars in loans from the US government to help it stay afloat until the deadline. The new infusion brings to
15.4 billion dollars its debt to the US government since December.

GM faces bankruptcy after June 1 if the government’s auto task force believes it has not become lean enough to survive.

Reacting to reports that GM was going to kill off Pontiac, GM posted a statement on its website to dispute “media speculation” on the topic and say it was still reviewing its plan to ensure success.

“General Motors has not announced any changes to its long-term viability plan or to the future status of any of its brands,” the company said.

GM’s smaller rival, Chrysler, faces a shorter deadline on viability on Thursday, and is hustling to nail down a buy-in deal with Italian automaker Fiat, get more cooperation from its lenders and talk its employees, particularly in Canada, into parting with some of their union benefits. (dpa)

GM and SAIC Promote Fuel Cell Propulsion Technology

Introduce Shanghai Brand Vehicle Powered by GM System

Shanghai – General Motors Corp. and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. Group
(SAIC) announced today the launch of SAIC’s Shanghai Brand Fuel Cell Vehicle,
which is powered by GM’s latest fourth-generation fuel cell propulsion
technology.

The vehicle from SAIC uses the same 700 bar high-pressure hydrogen fuel cell
system adopted in the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell. Ten Shanghai Brand Fuel
Cell Vehicles will be built. The zero-emission high-tech vehicles will join
the Equinox Fuel Cell as part of a fleet of both GM and SAIC vehicles to
shuttle VIPs at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

“The Shanghai and Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles will be featured in the
most extensive fuel cell demonstration program ever conducted in China. This
follows the government’s call for the creation of a sustainable transportation
system,” said GM Group Vice President and GM Asia Pacific President Nick

vehicles. The original Equinox fuel cell propulsion system has been modified
and improved to fit into the Shanghai Brand Fuel Cell Vehicle.

GM and SAIC are the exclusive joint global automobile partner of World Expo
2010 Shanghai. In line with the exposition’s theme of “Better City, Better
Life,” GM and SAIC plan to showcase their solutions for sustainable
transportation while promoting the vehicles of tomorrow at their corporate
pavilion.

The two automakers, which operate eight joint ventures in China, earlier
signed a pair of agreements to promote advanced vehicle technology. Their
Shanghai GM joint venture began selling the Buick LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid last
year as part of its Drive to Green strategy. China is slated to become one of
the first markets for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle in
2011.

GM has deployed more than 100 Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles around the globe,
making it the largest fuel cell electric vehicle fleet to date. Vehicles are
being driven by a wide range of customers, businesses, government agencies,
celebrities and media as part of Project Driveway.

GM chief still hopeful of avoiding bankruptcy

Washington – General Motors head Fritz Henderson is still confident that the ailing US carmaker can avoid bankruptcy as a government-imposed June 1 deadline for the company to restructure its operations grows ever nearer.

Henderson, who took over as GM chief executive this month in a government-forced shake-up, acknowledged that “the clock is ticking” for the company to shed loss-making brands, make serious cuts to its labour costs and debt burdens or risk losing state support.

In a teleconference with reporters, Henderson said the company was making progress in off-loading subsidiaries including Opel, Saab, Hummer and Saturn.

GM has already received 13.4 billion dollars in emergency government loans and has said it could need as much as 30 billion dollars more to survive the current downturn, which has seen US car sales plummet nearly 40 per cent since October.

President Barack Obama last month gave GM a June 1 deadline to make the cuts necessary to remain viable, or lose the government loans and be forced into a managed bankruptcy. (dpa)

GM may drop Pontiac and GMC brands: report

NEW YORK (Reuters) – General Motors Corp (GM.N), facing a June 1 deadline to restructure under U.S. government oversight, may drop its Pontiac and GMC brands as part of broader cost-cutting moves, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The two brands are being studied as part of talks with an Obama administration task force assessing whether GM can be restructured without bankruptcy, sources told Bloomberg on Wednesday.

GM’s Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick brands are likely to be safe, the news agency reported.

GM had said earlier it would keep Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Pontiac while selling or closing Hummer, Saab and Saturn.

An investor group including private equity firm Black Oak Partners has approached GM about buying its Saturn brand assets and dealership network, both sides said on Wednesday.

GM’s Hummer brand has received interest from three bidders, none of them automakers, sources told Reuters on April 8.

The current offers for Hummer range from $100-$200 million, the sources said. GM has taken $13.4 billion of U.S. government loans since the beginning of the year.

A decision is yet to be reached on what would happen to Pontiac or GMC should GM opt not to keep them, Bloomberg reported, citing unidentified sources.

The GMC brand has a better chance of surviving than Pontiac, one of the sources told the agency.

A GM spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the report.
